An Exploration Of Principal Change Facilitator Style, Teacher Bureaucratic And Professional Orientations, And Teacher Receptivity To Change. (Volumes I And Ii)., Sheila Weaks Chauvin
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The primary purpose of this study was to utilize conceptions of principal change facilitator style, bureaucratic and professional orientations and teacher receptivity to change to extend our understanding of schools as organizations and to develop a comprehensive theoretical conception of planned organizational change in schools. A secondary purpose of this study was to report the results of a series of data analyses used to refine operational definitions of the study variables. This study is the first known in the literature to examine relationships among these variables in concert with a common set of schools, principals and teachers. The sample for …
Re-Thinking Readings And Writing In The Study Of Literature., Mary Ann Doyle
Re-Thinking Readings And Writing In The Study Of Literature., Mary Ann Doyle
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
While the field of academic literary studies continues to engage in contested debate over defining and revising its curricula (Graff, 1987), teachers remain situated at the sometimes contradictory and often isolated intersections of theory and practice. Decisions made about writing in literature classes, selecting texts for course syllabi, and pedagogical style are most often negotiated at the level of the individual teacher, who may or may not be responding to an increasing incidence of departmental restructuring, recommendations, prohibitions, or political pressures. Though there is no scarcity of disagreements and accusations about what revisionary approaches 'mean', (Fieldnotes, Spring 1992), there is …
Synthesis Of Novel Metallocenes: Asymmetric Hydrogenation Catalysts To Conductive Polymers., Mark Steven Erickson
Synthesis Of Novel Metallocenes: Asymmetric Hydrogenation Catalysts To Conductive Polymers., Mark Steven Erickson
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The goal of this research was to synthesize conductive polymers based on repeating ferrocene units. During the course of this study, the design of the conductive polymers evolved from the initial model based on "stacked" ferrocenes where ethano bridged cyclopentadienyl rings are linked by iron(II), to the latest ferrocene-diene model where ferrocene units were linked by double bonds. In the pursuit of these elusive monomers, attempts at their synthesis led down dead-end routes, even though new molecules were synthesized. Some of these dead-ends proved productive as in the synthesis of chiral titanocene derivatives. All the work reported in this dissertation …
Sorption, Kinetics, And Transport Of Selected Heavy Metals In Soil: A Laboratory Study And Modelling Approaches., Christoph Hinz
Sorption, Kinetics, And Transport Of Selected Heavy Metals In Soil: A Laboratory Study And Modelling Approaches., Christoph Hinz
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The retention and transport behavior of heavy metals in soils is affected by soil chemical heterogeneity. The objectives of this study were to evaluate (i) the effects of heterogeneity on solute transport of heavy metals under steady water flow, (ii) the applicability of single solute and ion exchange isotherms to model Zn and Cd transport in soil columns, (iii) the modelling of the sorption kinetics of Zn under batch and flow conditions, and (iv) the effects of organic matter and iron oxide removal on the kinetics of Zn sorption in soils. A sensitivity analysis showed that site affinity distribution functions …
Regional Comparative Advantage And Inefficiency In Production: Methodological And Empirical Issues., Barun Kanti Kanjilal
Regional Comparative Advantage And Inefficiency In Production: Methodological And Empirical Issues., Barun Kanti Kanjilal
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The general objective of this study was to provide a methodological framework for evaluating stochastic comparative advantage of a crop in a multi-region multi-crop framework and its link with inefficiency at the firm level. In the first stage, regional comparative advantage, defined in terms of relative profitability, was theoretically analyzed on the basis of a firm's behavior under uncertainty. The empirical application involved derivation of a comparative advantage index for major crops produced in different regions of Louisiana. The results revealed heterogenous survival potential of each crop across regions. Sugarcane was found to have comparative advantage over rice and soybeans …
Pistols And Politics: Planter And Plain Folk Relations In The Piney Woods South, The Florida Parishes Of Louisiana, 1810-1899. (Volumes I And Ii)., Samuel Claiborne Hyde Jr
Pistols And Politics: Planter And Plain Folk Relations In The Piney Woods South, The Florida Parishes Of Louisiana, 1810-1899. (Volumes I And Ii)., Samuel Claiborne Hyde Jr
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The Florida parishes of Louisiana experienced a peculiar pattern of development. Following successive periods of English and Spanish domination and an armed insurrection resulting in the shortlived Republic of West Florida, the region stabilized under the control of delta parish planters. A fierce tradition of Jeffersonian republican values encouraged the plain folk to assert themselves politically during the 1830's and 1840's. Yet by employing a series of enemies common to southern whites, and by expanding their control over the means of access to market, the planters stifled the aspirations of the plain folk insuring white unity on the eve of …
A Novel Process For The Production Of Clinical Dextran., Doman Kim
A Novel Process For The Production Of Clinical Dextran., Doman Kim
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A new process for the production of clinical (or controlled size) dextran was developed. This process is simpler, cheaper and more economical than traditional methods. It involves the use of a mixed culture fermentation with a dextranase producing strain (Lipomyces starkeyi ATCC 74054) and a dextransucrase producing strain (Leuconostoc mesenteroides ATCC 10830). The new process produced 84% (w/w) of theoretical yield clinical dextran with an average polydispersity between 1.2 and 1.5. The mechanism of clinical dextran formation is the competitive production of acceptors from newly formed dextran molecules by dextranase. The acceptors compete for the existing glucosyl portion of sucrose, …
Theatrical Intervention In The Aids Crisis: Performance, Politics, And Social Change., Cindy J. Kistenberg
Theatrical Intervention In The Aids Crisis: Performance, Politics, And Social Change., Cindy J. Kistenberg
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This purpose of this study is to assess the efficacy of performance as a means of social change by focusing on performances that have arisen out of the AIDS crisis. Working from a cultural studies perspective, I attempt to delineate both the possibilities and limitations for this perspective on social change. By comparing the various forms these performances have taken, I offer an explanation as to how these forms inhibit or enhance the ability of a performance to challenge the dominant discourse on AIDS, and create and mobilize communities that can act in the fight against AIDS. I begin by …
Learning Horn-Clauses As Classification Rules For Relations., Mary Pamela Langley
Learning Horn-Clauses As Classification Rules For Relations., Mary Pamela Langley
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Explanation-based learning (EBL) has been applied numerous times in many different domains using as much background knowledge as possible to guide the learning process. We design and implement a new EBL based algorithm called FORGE (FOrming Rules from Ground Explanations) which operates utilizing limited background knowledge. The input to the FORGE algorithm consists of examples and counterexamples of the target concept in the form of ordered tuples along with example tuples of base relations. This limited input is used to construct explanation trees which produce ground rules. These ground rules are then generalized and evaluated using simple cover counts. Different …
Cosmology And Curriculum: A Vision For An Ecozoic Age., Angela T. Lydon
Cosmology And Curriculum: A Vision For An Ecozoic Age., Angela T. Lydon
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The text of this dissertation explores interconnections between cosmology and curriculum. I believe the demands of an Ecozoic Age will initiate a reconceptualizing of curriculum. Further, I believe the particular cosmological perspective I advance can help us with this reconceptualization. Chapter 1 utilizes the multi-faceted insights of scientific, historical, and speculative thought. The texts used in this chapter incorporate an engagement with past cultures (Ong, Eliade), with contemporary theoretical perspectives (Munitz, Haught, and Stafford), and with a scholarship that envisions alternative futures (Bohm). Chapter 2 uncovers how modernity's relationship to the earth is rooted in the scientific, political, and social …
Behavioral Influences On Predator-Prey Interactions Between Juvenile Teleosts And Meiofauna., John Nathan Mccall
Behavioral Influences On Predator-Prey Interactions Between Juvenile Teleosts And Meiofauna., John Nathan Mccall
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Predator-prey relationships between post-larval and juvenile teleosts are greatly influenced by the manner in which feeding behavior of fish interacts with the behavior of meiofaunal prey. Juvenile starry flounder (Platichthys stellatus Pallas) in a southeastern Alaskan bay fed disproportionately on the harpacticoid copepod Microarthridion littorale (Poppe), particularly on males. This apparent selectivity was not due to differing vertical distribution of harpacticoid species or to feeding in other locations. Comparison of ingested prey to harpacticoid assemblages collected by various techniques (including near-bottom collections) suggested that the prey selection shown by starry flounder may be the result of emergent behavior of its …
Organic-Rich Lower Tertiary Shales, South Louisiana: Implications For Petroleum Source Rock Deposition., Elizabeth Wyatt Chinn Mcdade
Organic-Rich Lower Tertiary Shales, South Louisiana: Implications For Petroleum Source Rock Deposition., Elizabeth Wyatt Chinn Mcdade
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study presents comprehensive organic geochemical evidence of organic-rich marine shales in the middle Eocene lower part of the Claiborne Group and the lower Eocene-Paleocene Wilcox Group of south Louisiana. The shales are the only post-Cretaceous age sediments in the northwest Gulf of Mexico basin that fit the conventional criteria for liquid hydrocarbon source rocks. Visual and geochemical evidence suggests that the Paleogene shales contain terrestrially derived, amorphous kerogen with high hydrogen indices whose oil potential has been upgraded by bacterial degradation. The Paleogene section is at immature to late mature levels with respect to petroleum generation, at present-day burial …
Effect Of Soil Redox Potential Andph On Nutrient Uptake By Rice With Special Reference To Arsenic Forms And Uptake., Alfredo Ruben Marin
Effect Of Soil Redox Potential Andph On Nutrient Uptake By Rice With Special Reference To Arsenic Forms And Uptake., Alfredo Ruben Marin
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Studies dealing with the availability and speciation of arsenic (As) as affected by soil redox potential and pH were initiated because of the lack of information on As chemistry in flooded soils. The chemistry of native and applied As was studied in a Crowley silt loam soil (Typic Albaqualf). Arsenic uptake and its toxic effect on two rice cultivars as affected by As chemical form and concentration were also studied. Soil redox potential and pH were shown to affect speciation and solubility of both native and applied As. Upon soil reduction, indigenous-As solubility increased, and arsenite (As(III)) comprised most of …
A Computational Framework For Efficient Error Correcting Codes Using An Artificial Neural Network Paradigm., Maung Maung Htay
A Computational Framework For Efficient Error Correcting Codes Using An Artificial Neural Network Paradigm., Maung Maung Htay
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The quest for an efficient computational approach to neural connectivity problems has undergone a significant evolution in the last few years. The current best systems are far from equaling human performance, especially when a program of instructions is executed sequentially as in a von Neuman computer. On the other hand, neural net models are potential candidates for parallel processing since they explore many competing hypotheses simultaneously using massively parallel nets composed of many computational elements connected by links with variable weights. Thus, the application of modeling of a neural network must be complemented by deep insight into how to embed …
Isolation And Oxidative Modifications Of Sesquiterpene Lactones., Isabel Salkeld Nunez
Isolation And Oxidative Modifications Of Sesquiterpene Lactones., Isabel Salkeld Nunez
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
In a biochemical systematic study of the tribe Heliantheae, the isolation and structural elucidation of secondary metabolites from four species is reported. The aerial parts of Melampodium leucanthum afforded, besides the known melampolides melampodin A acetate, leucanthin B and leucanthinin, the new lactone leucanthinin-4-epoxide. Peracid oxidation of leucanthinin provided its monoepoxide derivative, the physical and spectroscopical data of which were identical with the new natural lactone. The isolation and structural elucidation of 7$\alpha$-hydroxydehydrocostus lactone, 13-hydroxy-11,13-dihydro-7,11-dehydro-3-desoxy-zaluzanin C and reynosin from Podachaenium eminens is reported. The isolation of the furanoheliangolides atripliciolide 2-methylbutyrate, atripliciolide tiglate and 17,18-dihydrobudlein A from Pappobolus nigrescens was accomplished. …
Autobiographical Amnesia: Memory, Myth, Curriculum., Gregory Michael Nixon
Autobiographical Amnesia: Memory, Myth, Curriculum., Gregory Michael Nixon
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Autobiography in curriculum theory and practice is being more and more acknowledged as a major force leading toward the development of reflectively analytical teachers, reflexive practitioners, and discursively self-aware individuals. I look to two vital aspects of self-narration to explore. I speak firstly of memory, without which narrative continuity would be impossible. Memory is as involved with learning as it is with storytelling, and I would agree with Krell (1978) that "inquiry into memory and the theory of pedagogy go hand in hand" (p. 131). I eschew the models of memory provided by the behavioral sciences, empirical psychology, cognitive psychology, …
Assemblage Of Spinach Photosystem Ii Proteins: Cpa-1 And Msp Interactions., Carlos Benito Queirolo
Assemblage Of Spinach Photosystem Ii Proteins: Cpa-1 And Msp Interactions., Carlos Benito Queirolo
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This work focuses on the production and characterization of crosslinked products obtained from PS II preparations, with the aim of better understanding the structural relationships between the manganese stabilizing protein (MSP) and the interior antenna protein CPa-1. Two oxygen evolving reaction center (OERC) preparations, OERC complex and OERC core, produced various crosslinked products with the hydrophobic crosslinker dithio-bis-(succinimidyl propionate) (DTSP). Crosslinking experiments with OERC complex demonstrated that a close association of MSP to CPa-1 occurs, as both proteins were found to be present simultaneously in various crosslinked products revealed by one- and two-dimensional electrophoretic and immunoblotting techniques. These crosslinked products …
Modification Of The Drainmod-Creams Model To Incorporate A Nutrient Submodel., Abdul Razak Bin Saleh
Modification Of The Drainmod-Creams Model To Incorporate A Nutrient Submodel., Abdul Razak Bin Saleh
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
DRAINMOD-CREAMS model was used to simulate surface runoff and sediment loss from subsurface drained plot and non-subsurface drained plot in southern Louisiana. Seven years (1981-1987) of recorded data were used in this study. In general, the performance of the model in simulating surface runoff and sediment loss from subsurface drained plot is satisfactory. However, the DRAINMOD-CREAMS model did not simulate surface runoff and sediment loss accurately from non-subsurface drained plot. The CREAMS nutrient submodel was also tested on both plots. The CREAMS model seriously overestimates the nitrogen loss from non-subsurface drained plot. The sensitivity of the DRAINMOD-CREAMS model on erodibility …

Death At The Hands Of Persons Unknown: The Geography Of Lynching In The Deep South, 1882 To 1910., Mary Elizabeth Hines
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This research explores the county-level lynching record of four Deep South states--Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Mississippi--to discover the spatial and temporal distribution of lynching within the region and its relationship to social and economic conditions. The period of 1882 to 1910 is selected because lynching reached its highest levels in those decades. Demographic and economic variables from the United States censuses characterize Deep South counties as urban or rural and rich or poor. The physiography and historical attributes of counties are also considered. The research objective is to improve understanding of lynching in the postbellum Deep South through geographic analysis. …
Modeling Three-Dimensional Groundwater Flow And Solute Transport By The Finite Element Method With Parameter Estimation., Fang Xin Yu
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A general, systematic and improved numerical formulation for the three-dimensional (3-D) groundwater flow and solute transport problems was derived, using the finite element method. In the numerical formulation, a hidden mistake, which has appeared in many textbooks and journal papers dealing with the advective term of the general 3-D solute transport equation, was found and corrected. Some simpler and practical expressions for the leaky boundary condition, surface flux condition, and sources and sinks were proposed. To improve the conventional formulation for the time derivatives, a combination of the Galerkin method and the collocation method was developed. A more accurate scheme …

The Keepers And The Kept: The First Hundred Years Of The Tennessee State Prison System, 1830-1930. (Volumes I And Ii)., Larry D. Gossett
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Tennessee built its first state penitentiary in Nashville in 1830 on Sixteenth and Church Streets on land that is now a downtown parking lot. Revisions in the criminal code made many offenses punishable by imprisonment instead of corporal or capital punishment, and the convict population grew steadily. Continuing concern was expressed by the General Assembly that the penitentiary be self-supporting, and much effort was expended at all levels of government to accomplish that end. This study covers the history of approximately the first one hundred years of the Tennessee State Prison System. It begins with an overview of the criminal …
Improvement Of The Data Analysis Algorithm By Applying The Decision Tree Method., Won Chan Jung
Improvement Of The Data Analysis Algorithm By Applying The Decision Tree Method., Won Chan Jung
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Data analysis (reconstructability analysis) is an area used on a data set which has several variables and a function value to find the most important factor that causes the function values to fall within a desired range. Normal data analysis algorithm (1) finds the most important factor in O (2$\sp{n})$ time. This dissertation introduces a newly developed system of algorithms called the Data Analyzing Tree (DAT) which is designed to either reduce the time complexity or produce more accurate results. DAT-1 uses O $(n\sp2)$ time to produce the same results as the normal data analysis method, and DAT-2 produces the …

Normal And Pathological Breakdown In Arabic., Sabah Safi-Stagni
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The grammatical structure of Arabic allows for significant cross-linguistic comparisons in the study of Slips-of-the-tongue as well as aphasia. The dissertation presents a case study of the aphasic deficit in the speech of a speaker of Arabic, in particular, the Hijazi dialect spoken in the Western Province of Saudi Arabia, with a subsequent comparison with regular slips-of-the-tongue in the same dialect collected and analyzed by the same author. Both the slips-of-the-tongue data and the aphasia data have been collected in the city of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, by the present investigator. It was observed that in such a highly inflected language, …
American Civil Religion And The Presidential Rhetoric Of Jimmy Carter., Michael James Adee
American Civil Religion And The Presidential Rhetoric Of Jimmy Carter., Michael James Adee
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Scholars have long speculated about the role of American civil religion and political discourse. Of particular interest to rhetorical scholars is the function of a civil religion idiom within presidential discourse. The cornerstone of this study is founded upon Rod Hart's ideas in The Political Pulpit (1977) wherein the nature of American civil religion is described through the metaphor of a legal contract. A rhetorical approach to civil religion provides the framework for this study. Nine major public speeches by Carter as candidate and president, from 1974 to 1979, are examined in order to locate and identify the symbolic breeches …
Dynamic Response Of An Electron Storage Ring Magnet., Shahriar Jahanian
Dynamic Response Of An Electron Storage Ring Magnet., Shahriar Jahanian

A combined experimental and numerical methodology was employed to investigate the dynamic response of the electron storage ring dipole magnets located in the Center for Advanced Microstructural Devices (CAMD) at Louisiana State University (L.S.U.). The magnet are highly anisotropic and can not be analysed for dynamic response without knowledge of the effective elastic properties. The theory of wave propagation in conjunction with finite element analysis was used to determine the variation of the effective modulus of elasticity magnets in question. The structure of the magnet was modeled with NASTRAN. A theoretical analysis was performede that supported the experimental variation of …
A Formal Methodology For The Specification Of Distributed Systems From An Object Perspective., Sangbum Lee
A Formal Methodology For The Specification Of Distributed Systems From An Object Perspective., Sangbum Lee
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Distributed computing systems are systems in which multiple processors run independently by communicating with each other. The design of distributed systems is difficult to achieve as the execution patterns of distributed system are typically more complex than those of non-distributed computing systems. The application of object-oriented techniques to the design of distributed systems has the potential to increase the power of modeling and computing. A formal methodology which includes a specification language, developed from an object perspective, for the development of distributed systems is presented. The formal specification language, DOSL (Distributed Object-based Specification Language), represents the specification of distributed systems …
Comparative Study Of Anionic And Nonionic/Anionic Surfactant Systems In Micellar Electrokinetic Capillary Chromatography., Edward Lester Little
Comparative Study Of Anionic And Nonionic/Anionic Surfactant Systems In Micellar Electrokinetic Capillary Chromatography., Edward Lester Little
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Micellar electrokinetic capillary chromatography (MECC) is a rapidly growing technique allowing separation of electrically neutral compounds with the high separation efficiencies typically observed in capillary zone electrophoresis. This technique is still in its infancy and subsequently suffers from several inherent problems which must be addressed such as the limited range of solute elution and clear protocol for optimization of separations. This work addresses these problems with primary emphasis on using mixed nonionic/anionic surfactant systems as opposed to pure surfactants. In Chapter One, the fundamental theory behind MECC is discussed along with a brief synopsis of previous studies involving different surfactant …
Shell-Model Description Of Rotational Motion In Odd-Mass Nuclei., Husney Ahmed Naqvi
Shell-Model Description Of Rotational Motion In Odd-Mass Nuclei., Husney Ahmed Naqvi
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
An algebraic shell-model realization of a quantum rotor for integral and half-integral angular momenta is introduced. The underlying symmetry of the theory is the SU(3) $\supset$ SO(3) group structure. The algebraic model reproduces the eigenvalues of the quantum rotor hamiltonian well for normal shell-model configurations; the mapping is exact for small values of the angular momentum in large SU(3) representations. A shell-model hamiltonian using this algebraic realization of the quantum rotor and other non-central one-body interactions is used to reproduce the experimental spectra of representative even and odd-mass ds-shell nuclei.
Stratigraphic Architecture Of An Extensional Orogen: The Mojave Extensional Belt, Southern California., Christopher John Travis
Stratigraphic Architecture Of An Extensional Orogen: The Mojave Extensional Belt, Southern California., Christopher John Travis
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Field-based studies and quantitative models provide new insights into the stratigraphic architecture of a developing continental extensional orogen. The early Miocene age Mojave Extensional Belt of southern California (MEB) exhibits a tripartite stratigraphy, consisting of (1) pre- to early synextension volcanic deposits, unconformably overlain by (2) syntectonic basement-derived megabreccia and breccia with local finer-grained units, overlain by (3) a posttectonic fining-upward sequence of gravel, sand, shale, and limestone. On a more local scale, stratigraphy and sediment dispersal within the MEB reflect the evolution of the major tectonic elements of the belt: (1) Breakaway zone. Strata of the western Newberry Mountains …
