Fourier Transform And Heat Equation In White Noise Analysis., Jung-Soon Kim Lee Jan 1992

Fourier Transform And Heat Equation In White Noise Analysis., Jung-Soon Kim Lee

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In this dissertation, we study the Fourier transform and heat equation in the white noise set-up. It is known that the Fourier transform ${\cal F}$ can be defined on the space (${\cal S}$)* of generalized white noise functionals. We prove that ${\cal F}$ is the adjoint of a certain linear operator on the space (${\cal S}$) of test functionals. On the other hand, it is known that if f is a bounded Lip-1 function on an abstract Wiener space with Gaussian measures $P\sb{t},$ then $u(t)=P\sb{t}f$ solves the heat equation ${d\over dt}u(t)={1\over2}\Delta\sb{G}u(t)$ with initial condition u(0) = f where $\Delta\sb{G}$ is …

Politics, The Nationality Problem, And The Habsburg Army, 1848-1914. (Volumes I And Ii)., Lohr Eugene Miller Jr Jan 1992

Politics, The Nationality Problem, And The Habsburg Army, 1848-1914. (Volumes I And Ii)., Lohr Eugene Miller Jr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The army of the Habsburg Monarchy was the central institution of the Habsburg state, and it embodied the ideal of non-national, dynastic rule. The army leadership was aware of the dangers of nationalism, but in the period between the end of the Napoleonic Wars and the revolutions of 1848, no attempt was made to overcome the danger of national disaffection. The revolutions of 1848 caused the army to remove Hungarian and Italian units from their homelands, but, despite the suspicion in which they were held, these troops fought well in the wars of 1859 and 1866. The financial weakness of …

Leader-Member Exchange Quality: The Relationship Of Similarity, Competence, And Selected Personality Variables., Antoinette S. Phillips Jan 1992

Leader-Member Exchange Quality: The Relationship Of Similarity, Competence, And Selected Personality Variables., Antoinette S. Phillips

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The Leader-Member Exchange (LMX) model (e.g., Cashman, Dansereau, Graen, & Haga, 1976; Dansereau, Cashman, & Graen, 1973) contends that leaders react differently with individual followers, rather than treating them homogeneously. Specifically, it assumes that leader behavior depends on relationships with individual work unit members. It further contends that followers vary in their perceptions of and reactions to leader behaviors. Followers, based on their interpersonal relationships (exchanges) with a leader, tend to form two qualitatively different groups, an in-group (higher quality) and an out-group (lower quality). Previous research has documented that insiders and outsiders may experience very different work outcomes. Factors …

A Study Of The Differences In Induction Experiences For Teachers In Differentially Effective Schools., Carol Sue Ter Haar Jan 1992

A Study Of The Differences In Induction Experiences For Teachers In Differentially Effective Schools., Carol Sue Ter Haar

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Research studies have concluded that many new teachers abandon their teaching careers shortly after starting them. Part of the reason is their lack of adjustment within the very special social structure of public education. Induction of teachers frequently appears to be inadequate. Research over the past 20 years suggests a correlation between positive induction experiences and the quality of schools. This causal comparative study entailed a 3 x 2 design with three levels of school effectiveness and two levels of teacher experience. The schools were classified as effective, typical, or ineffective based on a classification scheme produced by the Louisiana …

Interactive Graphics-Based Musculotendon Modeling For Reconstructive Surgery Of The Hand., Inmo Yoon Jan 1992

Interactive Graphics-Based Musculotendon Modeling For Reconstructive Surgery Of The Hand., Inmo Yoon

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This research has been directed at studying and developing a prototype research and clinical Computer Aided Design (CAD) tool to be used for planning tendon paths in hand reconstructive surgery. Of equal importance is the goal of having an educational tool for teaching hand biomechanics to students of this specialty. The application of CAD to rehabilitative surgery of the hand is a new field of endeavor. There are currently no existing commercial products designed to assist the orthopedic surgeon in planning these complex procedures. Additionally, orthopedic surgeons are not trained in mechanics, kinematics, math modeling, or the use of computers. …

Assessing The Process Of Therapeutic Change In The Eating Disorders., Erich George Duchmann Jan 1992

Assessing The Process Of Therapeutic Change In The Eating Disorders., Erich George Duchmann

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Comparative outcome and process research approaches have not yielded a complete understanding of the beneficial processes of psychotherapy. A recent approach to studying psychotherapy has involved the study of general stages of change that occur during all types of psychotherapy which are positively related to treatment outcome. The purpose of the present investigation was to test a stage of change model for the treatment of the eating disorders anorexia and bulimia nervosa. A review of the literature suggested that there were four general symptom domains that may be related to positive outcome in the treatment of eating disorders. Based on …

Edwardsiella Ictaluri: Pathogenic Mechanisms And Antigens Recognized By Infected Channel Catfish., Thomas James Baldwin Jan 1992

Edwardsiella Ictaluri: Pathogenic Mechanisms And Antigens Recognized By Infected Channel Catfish., Thomas James Baldwin

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

To clarify early events in the pathogenesis of enteric septicemia of catfish, 140 channel catfish fingerlings (Ictalurus punctatus) were each infected with approximately 1.0 $\times$ 10$\sp9$ colony forming units Edwardsiella ictaluri (E. ictaluri) by intragastric intubation. Fish were sacrificed at 0, 0.25, 0.5, 1, 3, 6, 12, 24, 48, 72, 96, and 120 hours post infection (PI). Multiple tissue samples were evaluated by gross observation, light and electron microscopy, and immunohistochemical methods. In addition, stomach, intestine, trunk kidney, and liver were cultured quantitatively for bacteria. Trunk kidney cultures were positive by 0.25 hours PI, indicating rapid transmucosal passage. Histologic lesions …

Molecular Phylogenies And Biogeography Of Central American Birds., Shannon J. Hackett Jan 1992

Molecular Phylogenies And Biogeography Of Central American Birds., Shannon J. Hackett

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation presents data on the biogeography and molecular systematics of seven independent lineages of birds; both allozyme and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) characters were used. The purpose of this study was to discover biogeographic patterns among endemic taxa distributed in the highlands and lowlands of southern Central America and sister taxa in either North or South America. Analyses of the genera Diglossa, Buarremon, Pselliophorus, and Pezopetes suggested a complex biogeographic pattern in the highlands of southern Central America; divergence of some highland lineages occurred relatively recently (during the Pleistocene), after the landbridge connection between Central and South America was completed, …

Assimilation Of Organic Contaminants In Wetlands: Processes And A Conceptual Model., John Howard Pardue Jan 1992

Assimilation Of Organic Contaminants In Wetlands: Processes And A Conceptual Model., John Howard Pardue

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Laboratory studies and field measurements were conducted to quantify assimilative capacity of toxic organic contaminants in freshwater wetlands. Studies were conducted for hexachlorobenzene and naphthalene in a mineral-dominated bottomland hardwood forest and an organic matter-dominated freshwater marsh. In laboratory studies, sorption of hexachlorobenzene (HCB) in wetland soil and floodwater was strongly influenced by high levels of naturally occurring dissolved organic carbon (DOC). Organic matter-dominated wetlands (e.g., marshes) demonstrated no advantage over mineral-dominated wetlands (e.g., bottomland hardwood forests) for sorption of HCB due to partitioning in this DOC phase. Over the short-term, sorption of HCB was adequately described using a three-phase …

Effects Of Temperature On Methane Consumption In A Forest Soil And In Pure Cultures Of The Methanotroph Methylomonas Rubra, G. M. King, A. P.S. Adamsen Jan 1992

Effects Of Temperature On Methane Consumption In A Forest Soil And In Pure Cultures Of The Methanotroph Methylomonas Rubra, G. M. King, A. P.S. Adamsen

Faculty Publications

Methane oxidation in soil cores from a mixed hardwood-coniferous forest varied relatively little as a function of incubation temperatures from -1 to 30°C. The increase in oxidation rate was proportional to T2.4 (in kelvins). This relationship was consistent with limitation of methane transport through a soil gas phase to a subsurface zone of consumption by diffusion. The Q10 for CO2 production, 3.4, was substantially higher than that for methane oxidation, 1.1, and indicated that the response of soil respiration to temperature was limited by enzymatic processes and not diffusion of either organic substrates or molecular oxygen. When grown under conditions …

The Hemagglutinin/Esterase Gene Of Human Coronavirus Strain Oc43: Phylogenetic Relationships To Bovine And Murine Coronaviruses And Influenza C Virus, Xuming Zhang, Konstantin G. Kousoulas, Johannes Storz

Faculty Publications

The complete nucleotide sequences of the hemagglutinin/esterase (HE) genes of human coronavirus (HCV) strain OC43 and bovine respiratory coronavirus (BRCV) strain G95 were determined from single-stranded cDNA fragments generated by reverse transcription of virus-specific mRNAs and amplified by polymerase chain reaction. An open reading frame of 1272 nucleotides was identified as the putative HE gene by homology to the bovine coronavirus HE gene. This open reading frame encodes a protein of 424 amino acids with an estimated molecular weight of 47.7 kDa. Ten potential N-linked glycosylation sites were predicted in the HE protein of HCV-OC43 while nine of them were …

Two-Step Polymerase Chain Reactions And Restriction Endonuclease Analyses Detect And Differentiate Ompa Dna Of Chlamydia Spp., B. Kaltenboeck, K. G. Kousoulas, J. Storz

Faculty Publications

Specific and sensitive amplification of major outer membrane protein (MOMP) gene (ompA) DNA sequences of Chlamydia species with various MOMP genotypes was achieved by a two-step polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Degenerate, inosine-containing oligonucleotide primers homologous to the 5' and 3' ends of the translated regions of all chlamydial MOMP genes were used in a PCR to amplify a DNA fragment of approximately 1,120 bp. A portion of this DNA fragment was amplified in a second genus-specific reaction that yielded a DNA fragment of approximately 930 bp. A pair of degenerate oligonucleotide primers homologous to internal sequences of the primary DNA …

Viable Embryos And Normal Calves After Nuclear Transfer Into Hoechst Stained Enucleated Demi-Oocytes Of Cows, M. E. Westhusin, M. J. Levanduski, R. Scarborough, C. R. Looney, K. R. Bondioli

Faculty Publications

Bovine oocytes were bisected, stained with Hoechst 33342 and observed under a fluorescent microscope to identify nucleated and enucleated demi-oocytes. Other oocytes were bisected but not stained, or bisected and only half of each oocyte stained, and viewed under a fluorescent microscope. The oocytes were then used for nuclear transfer by fusing them with embryonic blastomeres from a 5-6 day bovine embryo. The fusion rate and proportion developing into compact morulae or blastocysts was compared among different types of demi-oocytes. Expt 1 examined the effect of staining and indicated no effect on either fusion rate or embryonic development whether or …

Involvement Of Interleukin 2 Receptors In Conceptus-Derived Suppression Of T And B Cell Proliferation In Horses, T. L. Roth, K. L. White, D. L. Thompson, S. Rahmanian, D. W. Horohov Jan 1992

Involvement Of Interleukin 2 Receptors In Conceptus-Derived Suppression Of T And B Cell Proliferation In Horses, T. L. Roth, K. L. White, D. L. Thompson, S. Rahmanian, D. W. Horohov

Faculty Publications

The mechanism by which a horse conceptus-derived immunosuppressive factor (HCS) of M(r) >100 000 inhibits lymphocyte proliferation was investigated. The factor was obtained from the culture supernatants of 20-day-old horse conceptuses; activity, identified by reduced uptake of [3H]thymidine by mitogen-stimulated lymphocytes, was greatest (P0.05). Data from a fluorescence-activated cell sorter indicated that supplementation with HCS reduced the number of T cells in phytohaemagglutinin-stimulated cultures and suppressed proliferation of T and B cells in pokeweed-mitogen-stimulated cultures compared with controls. Cell proliferation was greater (P0.05) from that of control cells. The addition of stimulated equine lymphocyte supernatant to cultures supplemented with HCS …

Faculty Publications

Sodium zeolite A (SZA), a synthetic sodium aluminosilicate having a high ion exchange capacity, has been shown to influence Ca and P utilization in chickens. A 3 x 2 x 2 factorial arrangement of treatments was used to investigate the effect of dietary P (.41, .55, and .69% total P), Ca (.6 and 1%), and SZA (0 and .75%) on growth, plasma, and tibia characteristics of chicks from 5 to 15 days of age. Growth, feed intake, gain:feed ratio, and tibia characteristics were influenced by dietary Ca and P in a manner consistent with dietary recommendations for these macro minerals. …

High-Order Harmonic Generation From Atoms And Ions In The High Intensity Regime, Jeffrey L. Krause, Kenneth J. Schafer, Kenneth C. Kulander Jan 1992

High-Order Harmonic Generation From Atoms And Ions In The High Intensity Regime, Jeffrey L. Krause, Kenneth J. Schafer, Kenneth C. Kulander

Faculty Publications

We present calculated optical harmonic spectra for atoms and ions in the high intensity regime to current short-pulse experiments. We find that ions can produce harmonics comparable in strength to those obtained from neutrals, and that the emission extends to much higher order. Simple scaling laws for the strength of the harmonic emission and the maximum observable harmonic are suggested. These results imply that the photoemission observed in recent experiments in helium and neon contains contributions from ions as well as neutrals. © 1992 The American Physical Society.

Structure And Light-Induced Expression Of A Small Heat-Shock Protein Gene Of Pharbitis Nil, Priti Krishna, Roderick F. Felsheim, John C. Larkin, Anath Das

Faculty Publications

To isolate genes that are regulated by a photoperiod that promotes flowering in Pharbitis nil, a cDNA library representing mRNA of induced cotyledons was screened by differential hybridization. The DNA sequence of one cDNA clone isolated by this approach, clone 12L, showed homology to plant small heat-shock protein (hsp) genes. P. nil genomic clones hybridizing to clone 12L were isolated, and the DNA sequences of two P. nil small hsp (shsp) genes, shsp-1 and shsp-2, were determined. The derived amino acid sequences of shsp-1 and shsp-2 showed maximum homology to the 17.9-kD soybean hsp, a member of the class II …

Linkages Among Preschoolers' Playground Behavior, Outcome Expectations, And Parental Disciplinary Strategies, Craig H. Hart, D. Michele Dewolf, Diane C. Burts

Faculty Publications

To explore relationships among parent's self-reported disciplinary strategies, preschoolers' outcome expectations, and playground behavior, 136 mothers of preschool-age children (age range = 39-71 months) participated in home disciplinary style interviews. Measures of preschoolers' outcome expectations and observations of childrens' prosocial, antisocial/disruptive, and nonsocial/with-drawn playground behavior in preschool settings were also obtained. Results indicated that power-assertive mothers had preschoolers who engaged in more antisocial/disruptive behavior and who expected successful instrumental outcomes for hostile methods of resolving peer conflict. Preschoolers with such outcome expectations also participated in more antisocial playground behavior. Older preschoolers of inductive mothers engaged in more prosocial behavior and …

Creating Informal Play Opportunities: Are Parents' And Preschoolers' Initiations Related To Children's Competence With Peers?, Gary W. Ladd, Craig H. Hart

Faculty Publications

Preschoolers' social competence may depend on the frequency with which informal play activities are initiated by parents', children, and playmates. In this study, measures of children's peer relations in informal and school contexts and the frequency of parents', children's, and peers' play initiations were obtained with 83 preschool children and their families on 2 occasions. Frequent parent initiations were associated with higher levels of prosocial behavior, lower levels of nonsocial behavior and, among boys, greater peer acceptance in preschools. Children who were more initiating of informal peer contacts displayed less anxious behavior in school and were better liked by their …

Stress Begins In Kindergarten: A Look At Behavior During Standardized Testing, Pamela O. Fleege, Rosalind Charlesworth, Diane C. Burts, Craig H. Hart

Faculty Publications

Kindergarten children’s behavior before, during, and after standardized achievement testing was explored through a qualitative study in two classrooms (n = 36). Simultaneously quantitative data were collected in one of the classrooms (n = 21) before and during the testing. Data were collected through observations in the classrooms, interviews with children and teachers, and audio and video taping of the children. For the quantitative component of the study, frequencies of stress behaviors were observed using a scan sampling method. Qualitative findings indicated an increase in behaviors reported to be stress related during the testing and a decrease in those behaviors …

Phase Equilibria Of Supercritical Carbon Dioxide And Hydrocarbon Mixtures., Hyo-Guk Lee Jan 1992

Phase Equilibria Of Supercritical Carbon Dioxide And Hydrocarbon Mixtures., Hyo-Guk Lee

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The phase equilibria of supercritical carbon dioxide and hydrocarbon mixtures were studied. Correlation techniques for vapor-liquid and solid-fluid equilibria were studied for binary CO$\sb2$ and hydrocarbon mixtures using existing experimental data. Experimental investigation and correlation of the experimental data were carried out for solid-liquid equilibria of light and heavy hydrocarbon mixtures, and CO$\sb2,$ light and heavy hydrocarbon mixtures. A new technique of vapor-liquid equilibrium calculation by the activity coefficient method was developed and applied to binary CO$\sb2$ and hydrocarbon mixtures. The extrapolated vapor pressure of CO$\sb2$ was used for calculation of the fugacity of pure hypothetical liquid CO$\sb2$ and for …

Quality Enhancement Through Goal-Setting: Examining The Effects Of Goal Attributes And Feedback On Performance., Paula Lynne Phillips Jan 1992

Quality Enhancement Through Goal-Setting: Examining The Effects Of Goal Attributes And Feedback On Performance., Paula Lynne Phillips

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A laboratory experiment, using 165 students, was conducted to assess the effects of goal type (quantity vs quality), goal difficulty (difficult vs easy), goal specificity (specific vs nonspecific), and feedback type (goal-discrepant vs strategic) on performance. Subjects were asked to perform a heuristic task, appropriate for the assessment of both quantity and quality performance. Results indicated: (a) the provision of quality feedback will increase effort and will improve quality performance; (b) individuals value quality feedback more than they value quantity feedback; (c) individuals are more accurate in their prediction of quantity performance than they are in their prediction of quality …

Continuity Of Affine Transformations Of White Noise Test Functionals And Applications, H. H. Kuo, J. Potthoff, J. A. Yan Jan 1992

Continuity Of Affine Transformations Of White Noise Test Functionals And Applications, H. H. Kuo, J. Potthoff, J. A. Yan

Faculty Publications

Translations and scalings defined on the Schwartz space of tempered distributions induce continuous transformations on the space of white noise test functionals [25]. Continuity of the induced transformations with respect to their parameters is proved. As a consequence one obtains a direct simple proof of the fact that the space of white noise test functionals is infinitely differentiable in Fréchet sense. Moreover, it is shown that the Wiener semigroup acts as a mollifier on the space of test functionals. © 1992.

One-Dimensional Nash Groups, James J. Madden, Charles M. Stanton

Faculty Publications

A Lie group equipped with a compatible real algebraic structure is called a locally Nash group. We prove some general facts about locally Nash groups, then we classify the one-dimensional locally Nash groups, using a theorem of Weierstrass that characterizes the analytic functions satisfying an algebraic addition theorem. Besides the standard Nash structure on the additive group of real numbers, there are locally Nash structures on the additive reals induced by the exponential function, the sine function, and by any elliptic function that is real on ℝ. There are no other simply connected one-dimensional locally Nash groups. Any two quotients …

Five major reflectors in multichannel seismic common-depth-point line 667 (acquired with an airgun source), single-channel seismic ODP line 5 (acquired with a high-resolution watergun), and expanded spread profile C2 can be dated and tied to lithologic units. Through an initial τ-sum construction, followed by traveltime and full waveform forward modeling, ESP-derived compressional wave velocities can more accurately match traveltimes of these reflectors than full-reflectivity synthetic seismograms produced from shipboard-derived properties. Instrument calibration, drilling disturbance, and rebound effects suffered by the laboratory samples are sources of error. The authors speculate, based on the physical properties of the units that reflector "b' …

Extensions Of Tutte's Wheels-And-Whirls Theorem, Collette R. Coullard, James G. Oxley Jan 1992

Extensions Of Tutte's Wheels-And-Whirls Theorem, Collette R. Coullard, James G. Oxley

Tutte's wheels-and-whirls theorem states that if M is a 3-connected matroid and, for every element e, both the deletion and the contraction of e destroy 3-connectivity, then M is a wheel or a whirl. We prove some extensions of this theorem, one of which states that if M is 3-connected and has both a wheel and a whirl minor, then either M has only seven elements or there is some element the deletion or contraction of which maintains 3-connectivity and leaves a matroid with both a wheel and a whirl minor. © 1992.
