The Asymptotic Expansion Of Certain Multi-Dimensional Generalized Functions, R. Estrada, R. P. Kanwal Jan 1992

The Asymptotic Expansion Of Certain Multi-Dimensional Generalized Functions, R. Estrada, R. P. Kanwal

Faculty Publications

We apply regularization of divergent integrals in the derivation of the asymptotic expansion of certain multi-dimensional generalized functions. We further present several illustrations to demonstrate that the asymptotic development of generalized functions provides a lucid formulation of many concepts in asymptotic analysis such as the expansion of oscillatory integrals and the expansion of certain series. © 1992.

Emergence Of Radiation From Gravitational Potential Wells: The Absence Of Ωm Effects, Richard H. Price, Jorge Pullin Jan 1992

Emergence Of Radiation From Gravitational Potential Wells: The Absence Of Ωm Effects, Richard H. Price, Jorge Pullin

Faculty Publications

We consider a source of gravitational waves of frequency ω, located near the center of a massive galaxy of mass M and radius R with ωR-1. The case of odd-parity gravitational waves propagating through a perfect-fluid galaxy is particularly simple; for this case we find that, in addition to the expected redshift of the radiation emerging from the galaxy, there is a small amount of backscatter, of order Mω2R3. We show that there is no suppression of radiative power by the factor 1+ω2M24 as has been recently predicted by Kundu. The origin of Kundu's suppression lies in the interpretation of …

Electron-Pair Analysis For Doubly Excited Ridge States, Lijun Zhang, A. R.P. Rau Jan 1992

Electron-Pair Analysis For Doubly Excited Ridge States, Lijun Zhang, A. R.P. Rau

Faculty Publications

The two-electron Schrödinger equation is analyzed in hyperspherical coordinates, with the electrons described throughout as a pair. In contrast to the current adiabatic hyperspherical method, which reverts at large distances to a description in terms of individual electrons, the pair aspect is preserved also asymptotically. Whereas the adiabatic potential wells converge to single-ionization limits, we develop potential wells converging to the double-ionization limit of the system, and doubly excited states are then viewed as eigenstates of the pair in these wells. At the simplest level, we get series converging to the double-ionization limit which are described analytically by the pair-Rydberg …

Long‐Term Effects Of Ozone And Simulated Acid Rain On The Foliage Dynamics Of Slash Pine (Pinus Elliottii Var. Elliottii Engelm.), David P. Byres, Thomas J. Dean, Jon D. Johnson

Faculty Publications

Seedlings from four half‐sib families of Pinus elliottii var. elliottii Engelm. were planted in open‐top chambers, and exposed to ozone and simulated acidic precipitation. Treatments were applied for 11 months per year for 28 months. The ozone concentrations were: charcoal filtered air (CF), nonfiltered ambient air (1×), twice the nonfiltered level (2 ×) and three times the nonfiltered level (3 ×). Ozone exposures were computer controlled to follow natural diurnal fluctuations in ambient ozone concentrations. Simulated acid rain at pH 3.3, 4.3 or 5.3 was delivered weekly at the same volume as average weekly rainfall to all chambers. Leaf area, …

John Donne's Verse Letters To Lucy Russell, Countess Of Bedford: Rhetorical Means To A Friendship., Joan Frances Faust Jan 1992

John Donne's Verse Letters To Lucy Russell, Countess Of Bedford: Rhetorical Means To A Friendship., Joan Frances Faust

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

John Donne's verse letters to Lucy Russell, Countess of Bedford, are more than static hyperbolic praise to a patroness interchangeable with any other patroness. Rather, they are viable and personal means by which Donne creates and sustains a friendship. Through the five verse letters examined in this dissertation, "Reason is the soules left hand," "You have refin'd mee," "T'Have written then," "To the Countesse of Bedford At New-yeares Tide," and "Honour is so sublime perfection," Donne rhetorically demonstrates his understanding of and ability to function within the various contexts of Bedford's life. Using the accepted view of the epistolary form …

Effects Of Job Applicant Past Performance And Interpersonal Attraction On Evaluator Attributions And Selection Decisions., Carl R. Phillips

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of the present study was to examine the main and interactive effects of applicant past performance and interpersonal attraction on evaluator attributions and selection decisions; and the effects of evaluator attributions on selection decisions. One hundred seventy-two male and female students enrolled in undergraduate principles of management classes participated in the study. Subjects evaluated an application for an on-campus position and were asked to make selection decisions (i.e., rating applicant's chances of being selected for an interview and eventually receiving a job offer). The results indicated a main effect of applicant past performance (educational and work-related) on selection …

The Purification Of Mcrb And Mcrc Proteins In Mcrbc Restriction System Of Escherichia Coli K12 And Dna Sequencing Of The Region Downstream Of Mcrc., Ling Zheng Jan 1992

The Purification Of Mcrb And Mcrc Proteins In Mcrbc Restriction System Of Escherichia Coli K12 And Dna Sequencing Of The Region Downstream Of Mcrc., Ling Zheng

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The McrBC restriction system of Escherichia coli K12 degrades methylcytosine-containing foreign DNA. Two genes mcrB and mcrC had been shown to be required for the McrBC restriction (Ross, et al., J. Bacteriol., 1989b). To explore the involvement of additional gene(s), a 1.7 kb fragment downstream of the mcrC was cloned and sequenced. Also mutants containing deletion in mcrBC or the downstream region were isolated by transposon excision. Genetic complementation studies confirmed that only DNA containing mcrB and mcrC gene on a high copy plasmid were needed to fully restored McrBC restriction. Deletion of the 1.7 kb fragment from or addition …

Plasticity-Damage Bounding Surface Model For Concrete Under Cyclic-Multiaxial Loading., Taher Mowafaq Abu-Lebdeh Jan 1992

Plasticity-Damage Bounding Surface Model For Concrete Under Cyclic-Multiaxial Loading., Taher Mowafaq Abu-Lebdeh

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Concrete exhibits a significant strain-softening behavior beyond the peak stress, and moreover, the mechanism of inelastic deformation in concrete consists of both plastic slip and microcracking. Hence, a combined plasticity and damage mechanics model is proposed for modeling concrete behavior under both multiaxial monotonic and cyclic loadings. The model adopts a bounding surface concept for both plasticity and damage. The introduced plasticity bounding surface is a function of the maximum compressive strain experience by the material, while the damage bounding surface is a function of the accumulated damage parameter. By this definition, both surfaces shrink in size in the stress …

The Epidemiology Of The Soybean/Diaporthe Phaseolorum Var. Caulivora Pathosystem In Louisiana., Guy Boyd Padgett Jan 1992

The Epidemiology Of The Soybean/Diaporthe Phaseolorum Var. Caulivora Pathosystem In Louisiana., Guy Boyd Padgett

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Field and greenhouse experiments were conducted during 1988-1991 to investigate the epidemiology of the soybean/Diaporthe phaseolorum var. caulivora (Dpc) pathosystem. The following points were addressed: (i) the effect of inoculation timing on soybean yield and disease severity, (ii) the efficacy of Dpc inoculum during the growing season, (iii) the possibility of alternative hosts for Dpc, and (iv) the relationship between threecornered alfalfa hopper injury and stem canker severity. Inoculation timing had a significant effect on the yield of Dpc susceptible or moderately susceptible soybean cultivars. Soybean yield was reduced most (83 to 93%) and disease severity was greatest (84 to …

A Study On Low-Frequency Variability In Current And Sea Level In The Lombok Strait And Adjacent Region., Dharma Arief Jan 1992

A Study On Low-Frequency Variability In Current And Sea Level In The Lombok Strait And Adjacent Region., Dharma Arief

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Current meter data in the mid-Lombok Strait region in 1985 show that 42% of the variance in the currents is within the intraseasonal frequency band (10-100 day-1). It is about two times the variance of the tidal currents. This intraseasonal variability appeared as episodic northward flows of 20 to 80 cm/s recurring every 20 to 60 days. Our data indicate these northward flows are driven by episodes of sea-level rise south of the Lombok Strait which are controlled by large scale westerly wind events in the Southeastern Indian Ocean. These northward flow events occur almost simultaneously with either a cyclone …

On The Relationship Between Circumscription And Well-Founded Semantics Of Logic Programs, Jianhua Chen Jan 1992

On The Relationship Between Circumscription And Well-Founded Semantics Of Logic Programs, Jianhua Chen

Faculty Publications

The relationship between 2-valued circumscription and well-founded semantics of normal and disjunctive logic programs is addressed. For normal programs, we derive conditions under which the well-founded model coincides with the intersection of 2-valued models of prioritized circumscription. For disjunctive programs, we show that the refined semantics by Chen and Kundu coincides with the semantics of prioritized circumscription.

Investigating The Informational Nature Of A Modeled Visual Demonstration., Britta Gertrud Schoenfelder-Zohdi Jan 1992

Investigating The Informational Nature Of A Modeled Visual Demonstration., Britta Gertrud Schoenfelder-Zohdi

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study investigated the informational nature of a modeled visual demonstration of slalom-ski type movements performed on a ski simulator. Hypotheses exist suggesting that a model may convey information primarily about movement coordination (Newell, 1985), or movement form (Whiting, 1988), but there is no empirical evidence that this information is used by the learner so that skill acquisition is facilitated. To investigate this information question, three experiments were conducted that replicated and extended a study by Whiting, Bijlard, and den Brinker (1987) by analyzing movement kinematics of subjects in addition to movement outcome. In the first experiment, the expert model's …

A Study Of Ferruccio Busoni's Transcriptions Of Six Organ Chorale Preludes By Johannes Brahms., Carmen Scialla Jan 1992

A Study Of Ferruccio Busoni's Transcriptions Of Six Organ Chorale Preludes By Johannes Brahms., Carmen Scialla

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Ferruccio Busoni's piano arrangements of six of Brahms's Eleven Chorale Preludes, Op. 122, are among the least known of his transcriptions. Published in 1897, they have remained overshadowed by his more popular transcriptions of the organ works of Bach. Maurice Hinson stated that "Busoni arranged some of the most pianistic of the set"; continuing, Hinson observed that problems encountered in the originals, such as bringing out inner voices and achieving a satisfactory legato, are more easily solved on the piano.$\sp1$. Referring to Busoni's own writings on transcribing as found in the appendices to his edition of Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier, this …

Monopoles And Confinement In Lattice-Gauge Theory., Vandana Singh Jan 1992

Monopoles And Confinement In Lattice-Gauge Theory., Vandana Singh

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The mechanism by which quarks, believed to be the fundamental constituents of matter, are prevented from existing in the free state is still unknown. The phenomenon of quark confinement is one of the fundamental problems in physics. One of the most viable candidates for a hypothesis of confinement is the dual superconductor mechanism that likens quark confinement to the Meissner effect in superconductors. The peculiarities of quark interactions make a numerical approach to the subject a necessity, and therefore, much of the work in this area has been done through the methods of lattice gauge theory, with the simplicities afforded …

Attitudes Toward International Harmonization Efforts: A Cross-Cultural Study., M. Aileen Smith Jan 1992

Attitudes Toward International Harmonization Efforts: A Cross-Cultural Study., M. Aileen Smith

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The last two decades have seen a significant increase in the number and size of multinational corporations and a growing global investment environment. Linked to that growth has been a call for standards that produce accounting information that is capable of crossing national boundaries. One of the groups of professional elites that have addressed the call for harmonized international accounting standards is the International Accounting Standards Committee (IASC). The IASC objective (IASC 1988, 1) states that it will "work generally for the improvement and harmonization of regulations, accounting standards and procedures ... " To address such a goal, the IASC …

The Molecular Systematics Of Unitunicate, Perithecial Ascomycetes., Joseph William Spatafora Jan 1992

The Molecular Systematics Of Unitunicate, Perithecial Ascomycetes., Joseph William Spatafora

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Maximum parsimony analysis of partial sequences from the small subunit ribosomal DNA (ssrDNA) rejects the monophyly of unitunicate, perithecial ascomycetes (pyrenomycetes). The genera Kathistes, Pyxidiophora and Subbaromyces are separated from a large clade of relatively derived pyrenomycetes. This derived pyrenomycete clade is supported by a bootstrap confidence level of 100% and a decay index of $>$10 steps, and contains two subclades, A and B. Subclade A comprises the orders Clavicipitales, Hypocreales, Microascales and the genus Ceratocystis; subclade B consists of the Diaporthales, Sordariales, Xylariales and the genus Ophiostoma. The Clavicipitales is a sister taxon to the Hypocreales, which consists …

A Study On The Aquic Conditions Of Two Natraqualfs In The Coastal Plain Of Louisiana., Ariel Alejandro Szogi Jan 1992

A Study On The Aquic Conditions Of Two Natraqualfs In The Coastal Plain Of Louisiana., Ariel Alejandro Szogi

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study had the purposes of investigating the aquic conditions of two selected Natraqualfs to define the relationship between wetness and morphological properties and prediction of major soil processes. The proposed criteria for aquic conditions as defined by the International Committee on Aquic Conditions (ICOMAQ) were identified by: (i) presence of redoximorphic features, and (ii) measurement of saturation and reduction. They were used to locally verify morphological inferences used to predict the aquic conditions. Morphological properties and laboratory analysis were used to predict the periodicity and duration of saturation and reduction. Soil and ground water analyses were used to understand …

Studies On Escherichia Coli Cell Division: Overexpression, Purification, And Quantitative Determination Offtsa Protein., Haichao Wang Jan 1992

Studies On Escherichia Coli Cell Division: Overexpression, Purification, And Quantitative Determination Offtsa Protein., Haichao Wang

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

FtsA is an essential cell division protein which is synthesized in minute amounts in Escherichia coli. To study the effects of overexpressing ftsA on the phenotype of E. coli cells, DNA fragments encoding the ftsA gene were subcloned downstream of a lac or a tac promoter in two plasmids. High-level expression of the ftsA gene from these promoters inhibited normal cell septation and caused the cells to become long, nonseptate filaments. Continued overexpression of ftsA resulted in the filaments developing spherical bulges up to 4 um in diameter. It is suggested that these bulges may emanate from septation sites because …

The Effects Of Dietary Sodium Zeolite A On Growth And Mineral Utilization Of Chickens., Kevin Lee Watkins Jan 1992

The Effects Of Dietary Sodium Zeolite A On Growth And Mineral Utilization Of Chickens., Kevin Lee Watkins

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Four experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of sodium zeolite A (SZA) on calcium (Ca), phosphorus (P), and zinc (Zn) utilization in broiler chickens from 5 to 14 or 15 days of age. In Experiment 1, two levels each of SZA (0 and.75%) and (or) Ca (1.0 and 1.5%) were fed to both uninfected and Eimeria acervulina-infected chicks. Excess dietary Ca reduced (P $$.10) in infected chicks (Ca x coccidiosis, P $<$.05). Addition of SZA to diets with excess Ca further decreased (P $<$.05) gain and tibia ash. These results suggest that SZA may exacerbate the adverse effects of excess dietary Ca. In Experiment 2, four levels of dietary Ca (.6,.8, 1.0, and 1.2%) and (or) two levels of SZA (0 and.75%) were fed. Sodium zeolite A decreased (P $<$.05) plasma P and tibia magnesium (Mg) but increased (P $<$.05) tibia Ca, Zn, aluminum (Al), and manganese (Mn). Tibia ash and shearing force were increased in chicks fed SZA and inadequate dietary Ca, but were decreased in chicks fed SZA and 1.2% Ca (Ca x SZA, P $<$.05). Dietary SZA enhanced tibia ash, density, and shearing force when dietary Ca was low; however, SZA reduced many bone mineralization indices in chicks fed excess Ca. In Experiment 3, various levels of dietary P (.41,.55, and.69%), Ca (.6 and 1%), and (or) SZA (0 and.75%) were fed. The addition of Ca, SZA, or both exacerbated the adverse effects of feeding low-P diets, yet alleviated the adverse effects of feeding low-Ca, high-P diets. Dietary SZA reduced (P $<$.01) plasma P and increased (P $<$.02) tibia Mn, Zn, copper (Cu), and Al. The SZA-induced increase in tibia Al was most evident in chicks fed low levels of P (SZA x P, P $<$.02). These data demonstrate that the effects of SZA are influenced by dietary concentrations of Ca and P, and that the addition of SZA to diets low in P results in bone Al accumulation. In Experiment 4, the effects of SZA on chicks fed inadequate (35 ppm), marginal (40 ppm), adequate (85 ppm), and excess (4,000 ppm) levels of Zn were assessed. Sodium zeolite A increased (P $<$.05) tibia and pancreas Zn regardless of dietary Zn concentration. Dietary SZA tended to alleviate the adverse effects of feeding inadequate Zn and exacerbate the adverse effects of feeding excess Zn.

Monte Carlo Studies Of The Critical Phenomena In Carbon Monoxide Oxidation., Bing Yu Jan 1992

Monte Carlo Studies Of The Critical Phenomena In Carbon Monoxide Oxidation., Bing Yu

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

It is well established that anisotropy does not affect the critical behavior of a system in thermodynamic equilibrium undergoing a second order phase transition. We study here an anisotropic kinetic model for heterogeneous catalysis which mimics the oxidation of CO on the (110) surface of a transition metal like Pd. In this model, the oxidation process occurs at an infinite reaction rate. We mapped out the phase diagram of possible steady states for various anisotropic reaction and absorption processes as a function of the O$\sb2$/CO adsorption rate and the CO diffusion rate. The phase diagram depends upon the amount of …

Codependency Issues In Selected Contemporary American Plays., Jill Stapleton Bergeron Jan 1992

Codependency Issues In Selected Contemporary American Plays., Jill Stapleton Bergeron

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Codependency is defined in this study as a disease characterized by individual adult inability to function in everyday life, in particular regards to personal relationships with others, in a healthy and self-loving manner. The study points to the works of several prominent theorists and practitioners in this field, such as John Bradshaw, Sharon Wegscheider-Cruse, Anne Wilson Schaef, and John and Linda Friel, as authoritative resource material on the subject. Being progressive in nature, codependency eventually leads to a host of severe personality and physical disorders, and usually to some form of suicide. The study points to abusive treatment in childhood--either …

Effects Of Imagery-Eliciting Strategies On Imagery Processing, Memory, Beliefs, Attitudes, And Intentions From Print Advertisements., Laurie Anne Babin Jan 1992

Effects Of Imagery-Eliciting Strategies On Imagery Processing, Memory, Beliefs, Attitudes, And Intentions From Print Advertisements., Laurie Anne Babin

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The dissertation research examined four research questions. First, the question of whether or not imagery processing could be measured was addressed. It was assumed that mental imagery does exist and can be measured in three dimensions: quality, quantity, and elaboration. Support for this assumption is provided by the psychometric properties of the scale developed to measure imagery processing in concert with the support toward nomological validity of the construct that was provided by applying the scale in an experiment. Second, antecedents to mental imagery were examined, namely, the imagery-eliciting strategies of pictures and instructions to imagine, and their effects on …

The Role Of Bovine Herpesvirus-1 Glycoprotein Iii In Molecular Pathogenesis And Immunomodulation., Katherine Marie Byrne Jan 1992

The Role Of Bovine Herpesvirus-1 Glycoprotein Iii In Molecular Pathogenesis And Immunomodulation., Katherine Marie Byrne

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Bovine herpesvirus-1 (BHV-1) is the pathogenic agent for infectious bovine rhinotracheitis. Current vaccines to protect against infection have serious disadvantages to producers and have been implicated in epizootic outbreaks. The virus has also been shown to cause suppression of the immune system. BHV-1 vaccines could be improved by identifying and genetically deleting those aspects of the virus responsible for immunosuppression and providing a marker within the genome which would distinguish the vaccine strain from wild types in the case of disease outbreaks. This study examined the role of gIII in viral infection and immunosuppression. This was accomplished by expressing full …
