The Songs Of Elsa Respighi Olivieri Sangiacomo., Mary Lenn Buchanan

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This monograph includes limited biographical and historical data intended to show Elsa Respighi's chronological and technical relationship within the sphere of twentieth-century vocal music. The poets who provided text for her music are reviewed, and a discussion of her treatment of the text is summarized. This study deals with twelve solo songs of Elsa Respighi. Each song was inspected for the following: melody, harmony, form, and piano accompaniment. These elements were discussed from the viewpoint of the performer. The survey yielded the following information about each song. Seven songs list the name of a poet, five songs do not. Six …

A Southern Social Ethic: Political Economy In The Nineteenth-Century South. Mississippi, 1840-1910. (Volumes I And Ii)., Bradley G. Bond Jan 1993

A Southern Social Ethic: Political Economy In The Nineteenth-Century South. Mississippi, 1840-1910. (Volumes I And Ii)., Bradley G. Bond

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

As a study of the southern social ethic, this work discusses some of the most lasting themes of southern historiography: race and class, continuity and discontinuity. The social ethic might best be defined as a collection of ideas, at times contradictory, that suggest southerners' concepts of life in a good republic, citizenship, and proper economic behavior. It also examines the reality of life in a rural state as it experienced the process of modernization. The first third of the dissertation offers a definition of the social ethic. Liberty and virtue, white southerners believed, inhered in all who avoided enslavement, the …

Photosynthetic Response To Elevated Carbon Dioxide Concentrations In The Aerenchyma Of Typha Latifolia L. Leaves., John Van Horne Constable Jan 1993

Photosynthetic Response To Elevated Carbon Dioxide Concentrations In The Aerenchyma Of Typha Latifolia L. Leaves., John Van Horne Constable

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study examined the importance of the leaf aerenchyma gas space as a CO$\sb2$ source for photosynthesis in Typha latifolia L. (broadleaf cattail). In the field there was a distinct diurnal pattern of CO$\sb2$ concentration ( (CO$\sb2$)) in the aerenchyma gas space. At dawn the aerenchyma (CO$\sb2$) was 4 to 18 times above atmospheric levels. By midday the aerenchyma (CO$\sb2$) declined to near atmospheric levels and increased again in the late afternoon. It is hypothesized that this diurnal pattern may be controlled by photosynthetic demand for CO$\sb2$. Aerenchyma gas space was estimated as $>$50% of leaf volume, and the …

An Exploration Of The Organizational Structure Of Instructional Supervision. (Volumes I And Ii)., Joseph Gerard Claudet Jan 1993

An Exploration Of The Organizational Structure Of Instructional Supervision. (Volumes I And Ii)., Joseph Gerard Claudet

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study explores the organizational nature of instructional supervision in schools. A conceptual model of the organizational/supervisory (O/S) structure and effects of school supervisory behaviors is presented. The model is based on an organizational conception of instructional supervision that views the variety of supervisory behaviors, interactions and decision making engaged in by school personnel as forming a unique supervisory subculture within the school organization. The model suggests that a school's overall O/S structure is determined through the complex interrelationship of an array of macro- and micro-level communicative elements or supervisory events. These macro- and micro-level elements are, in turn, influenced …

Specificity Of Chaperonin Groel Binding To The Precursor Of The Small Subunit Of Ribulose-1,5-Bisphosphate Carboxylase., Carmen Wheelock Dessauer Jan 1993

Specificity Of Chaperonin Groel Binding To The Precursor Of The Small Subunit Of Ribulose-1,5-Bisphosphate Carboxylase., Carmen Wheelock Dessauer

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Although chaperonin-assisted protein folding has been studied in vitro by a number of investigators, the features of an unfolded or partially folded polypeptide that are recognized and bound by chaperonins are not known. I addressed this question using the precursor of the small subunit (pS) of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase as a model substrate for GroEL, the bacterial chaperonin. The precursor protein was expressed in E. coli as a C-terminal fusion to protein A. Protein A-pS (and any associated cellular proteins) was isolated by affinity chromatography. GroEL could be eluted from the fusion protein by ATP and either GroES or casein, consistent …

Comparisons Of Spontaneous Mutation Rates And Estimates Of Numbers Of Cell Divisions In The Germlines Of Three Metazoans., Joni Boncille Drost

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Germline mutation rates measured per generation per locus in three species of Metazoa are used to address questions of the constancy of mutation rates per generation, per year and per germcell division. Null mutation rates per generation are: 3.6 $\times$ 10$\sp{-6}$ for human X-linked disease, 8.9 $\times$ 10$\sp{-6}$ for Specific Locus Test (SLT) in male mice, 3.2 $\times$ 10$\sp{-6}$ for SLT in female mice, 8.0 $\times$ 10$\sp{-6}$ for SLT in male Drosophila melanogaster (D.m.), 1.6 $\times$ 10$\sp{-6}$ for SLRL test in male D.m. and 2.0 $\times$ 10$\sp{-6}$ for SLRL test in female D.m. They were found to be very similar …

2,2',6,6'-Tetrasubstituted Diarylethynes: Models To Test Proximity And Position In Catalysis., Kevin Levon Evans Jan 1993

2,2',6,6'-Tetrasubstituted Diarylethynes: Models To Test Proximity And Position In Catalysis., Kevin Levon Evans

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Enzymes exhibit extraordinary efficiency and specificity in catalysis. A source of the catalytic power observed in enzymes has been attributed to the ability of the enzyme-substrate complex to bring the substrate into close proximity to the catalytic groups with proper orientation for reaction. However, the contributions of proximity and of orientation to the origin of catalytic power have not been quantified. A series of tethered and untethered 2,2$\sp\prime,$6,6$\sp\prime$-tetrasubstituted diarylethynes have been proposed to study the effect of proximity of the catalytic group to the substrate on catalysis. The syntheses of the diarylethyne models require efficient procedures for the synthesis of …

Performance And Organized Labor In Depression America: Community And Contestation. (Volumes I And Ii)., Kirk Wayne Fuoss Jan 1993

Performance And Organized Labor In Depression America: Community And Contestation. (Volumes I And Ii)., Kirk Wayne Fuoss

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study investigates the relationship among cultural performance, community, and contestation in two depression-era, organized labor social dramas. The major arguments developed in the study are summarized in the following three contentions. First, performances are inherently contestatory. Second, contestation and community stand in an interdependent rather than oppositional relationship to one another. Third, a dialectical relationship exists between performance and community whereby communities not only produce but are produced by performances. Chapter one defines key concepts and offers a rationale for the study. Two rationales for exploring the relationship among cultural performances, contestation, and community are advanced. First, despite the …

Tectonic Implications Of Fission-Track Thermochronology And Amphibole Thermobarometry Studies Of The Northern Peninsular Ranges Batholith, Southern California., Peter Gillham George Jan 1993

Tectonic Implications Of Fission-Track Thermochronology And Amphibole Thermobarometry Studies Of The Northern Peninsular Ranges Batholith, Southern California., Peter Gillham George

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Fission-track data from the San Jacinto Mountains and the Palomar Mountain-Escondido study area indicate that the Late Cretaceous history of the Peninsular Ranges batholith is marked by a series of major cooling events. Coupled with geobarometry measurements and field observations, these data allow for a greater understanding of the nature and timing of both local and regional tectonic events. In the eastern Peninsular Ranges, west-vergent thrusting along the Santa Rosa mylonite belt at $\sim$99-94 Ma was followed by major extensional faulting between $\sim$94 and 92 Ma. Amphibole geobarometry of mylonites indicate that $\sim$10-18 km of crustal thickening occurred as a …

New Approaches And Techniques For Drawing Lines On Raster Devices., Philip Arthur Graham Jan 1993

New Approaches And Techniques For Drawing Lines On Raster Devices., Philip Arthur Graham

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Two basic approaches to drawing lines on raster devices are discussed and improved upon. The first is the recursive bisection algorithm, a method recently proposed by John Rankin, which uses a fractal approach to draw lines. The second is the double-step algorithm, a method proposed by Xiaolin Wu and Jon Rokne, which is based on the traditional Bresenham approach to drawing lines. Although a number of line drawing algorithms exist, the algorithms presented are of interest because the double-step algorithm is one of the fastest line drawing algorithms. Furthermore, since lines are self-similar and fractals have been found to be …

The purpose of this ethnographic research was to begin the process of identifying the literacy characteristics of Navajo readers and writers. The study replicates aspects of the research project, Home Environmental Characteristics of Successful Navajo Readers, by Dr. David Hartle-Schutte (1988). Home and school discontinuities were investigated in a traditional Navajo environment to determine literacy development (Cazden, Courtney, 1982). Ethnographic data collection consisted of six months of participant observations in two sixth grade classrooms. Structured interviews were used to gather information from teachers, students and parents about the school and community literacy characteristics. A researcher designed instrument was used to …

The Role Of Pre-Response And Post-Response Augmented Learning Variables In Motor Skill Acquisition., M. Jerome Hand Jan 1993

The Role Of Pre-Response And Post-Response Augmented Learning Variables In Motor Skill Acquisition., M. Jerome Hand

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Verbal instructions, modeling, videotaped replay (VTR), and knowledge of performance (KP) are augmented learning variables that practitioners commonly present to learners to facilitate the acquisition of motor skill. Two experiments are reported that sought to determine how each of these variables affect skill acquisition and the cognitive representations responsible for producing such skill. Learning variables were classified as pre-response (verbal instructions and modeling) or post-response (VTR and KP), depending whether the information given pertained to the subsequent trial or the previous trial, respectively. Experiment 1 investigated the effects of each variable separately, while Experiment 2 examined whether a combination of …

High Performance Software Reconfiguration In The Context Of Distributed Systems And Interconnection Networks., Vinayak Gajanan Hegde

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Designed algorithms that are useful for developing protocols and supporting tools for fault tolerance, dynamic load balancing, and distributing monitoring in loosely coupled multi-processor systems. Four efficient algorithms are developed to learn network topology and reconfigure distributed application programs in execution using the available tools for replication and process migration. The first algorithm provides techniques for transparent software reconfiguration based on process migration in the context of quadtree embeddings in Hypercubes. Our novel approach provides efficient reconfiguration for some classes of faults that may be identified easily. We provide a theoretical characterization to use graph matching, quadratic assignment, and a …

Interviews with selected students and instructional documents supplemented …

Disclosure Decisions And Patterns After A Near-Death Experience., Regina M. Hoffman Jan 1993

Disclosure Decisions And Patterns After A Near-Death Experience., Regina M. Hoffman

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

As a dimension of privacy regulation, self-disclosure is the means through which individuals manage the psychological boundary area between the inner, private world and the outer, public world of interaction with others. In communication research, a gap has been noted between self-disclosure as defined by scientific method and self-disclosure as it is experienced by people in their daily life. This study reduces that gap by investigating disclosure decisions about a major life experience through the thick perspectives of the individuals themselves. Disclosure is examined as a context-embedded communicative process. To provide a thick description of disclosure decisions, an ethnographic methodology …

The Death Of A Dialect: Brule Spanish In Ascension Parish, Louisiana., Charles Edward Holloway

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The goals of this dissertation are: (1) to describe the Brule dialect, (2) to investigate aspects of language death, and (3) to provide important information to the area of Hispanic dialectology. The vestigial Spanish dialect spoken by the Brule dwellers of Ascension Parish, Louisiana is at the brink of linguistic extinction. The "Brule dwellers" have remained isolated from other Spanish-speaking groups since they arrived in Louisiana from the Canary Islands in the late 1700's. The specific phonological, morphological and syntactic characteristics of this unique variety of Spanish are documented here. Although the close relationship of Brule Spanish to the dialects …

Toward Understanding Post-Structuralism And Curriculum., Wen-Song Hwu Jan 1993

Toward Understanding Post-Structuralism And Curriculum., Wen-Song Hwu

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation describes extensions of post-structuralism in contemporary curriculum discourses. Post-structuralist thought is mainly associated with the seminal work of Michel Foucault, Jacques Derrida, Gilles Deleuze, Jean-Francois Lyotard, and Michel Serres. Post-structural criticism and analysis challenge prevailing structuralist approaches and question the fundamental assumptions upon which these approaches rest. A key assumption of structural approaches is that all phenomena are constituted by an underlying structure. In curriculum, these structural assumptions (often scientific) remain unacknowledged and thus are immunized against criticism; rather, they are incorporated into the preferred structural analyses, interpretations, and organizations promoted by the promise of order and rationality. …

New methods for assessing solidification/stabilization (S/S) of hazardous waste using solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance are developed for the purpose of diagnosing on a microscopic level the performance of S/S as a hazardous waste disposal technique. There are four techniques developed and described in this dissertation: (1) Solid-state deuterium NMR spectroscopy is used to determine if a particular deuterated organic waste is effectively solidified/stabilized and to determine the lower limit of the bond strength between the waste and the cement matrix; (2) Constant time pulsed field gradient $\sp1$H NMR spectroscopy is tested on a liquid waste encapsulated within a solidified matrix …

Partial Purification And Characterization Of A Naturally-Occurring Inhibitor Of Viral Polyprotein Processing., Shaffina John Jan 1993

Partial Purification And Characterization Of A Naturally-Occurring Inhibitor Of Viral Polyprotein Processing., Shaffina John

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

An inhibitor activity that prevents the proteolytic processing of Cowpea Mosaic Virus (CPMV) polyprotein has been discovered in crude wheat germ extracts. CPMV is a comovirus that replicates via the synthesis of two polyproteins which are subsequently cleaved by a viral proteinase to yield the functional viral proteins. Since this scheme of replication is common to many other viral groups, a potential target for antivirals is the proteinase responsible for polyprotein processing. A partial purification of this wheat germ inhibitor activity has been accomplished by classical protein purification methods which include ammonium sulfate precipitation, heat treatment, ion exchange, size exclusion …

Synthesis, Isolation, Characterization And Homogeneous Catalytic Reactions Of Racemic- And Meso-Metal Binucleating Tetraphosphine Complexes., Booker Washington Ochieng Juma Jan 1993

Synthesis, Isolation, Characterization And Homogeneous Catalytic Reactions Of Racemic- And Meso-Metal Binucleating Tetraphosphine Complexes., Booker Washington Ochieng Juma

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The tetraphosphine ligand Et$\sb2$PCH$\sb2$CH$\sb2$P(Ph)CH$\sb2$P(Ph)CH$\sb2$CH$\sb2$PEt$ \sb2$ (to be referred to as et,ph-P4) was designed to both bridge and chelate two metal centers and hold them in general proximity to investigate bimetallic cooperativity in homogeneous catalysis. The internal phosphines of et,ph-P4 are chiral, thereby generating a pair of diastereomers: the racemic, and the meso. These are produced in approximately equal amounts from the ligand synthesis. This project has concentrated on the separation and isolation of diastereomerically pure forms of et,ph-P4 to determine individual hydroformylation catalytic activity of each bimetallic complex. Complexes of Ni(NCS)$\sb2$ with et,ph-P4 were effective in accomplishing this separation by …

The Tio Family: Four Generations Of New Orleans Musicians, 1814-1933. (Volumes I And Ii)., Charles E. Kinzer

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Thomas Louis Marcos Tio (1828-c1881), and his uncle, Louis Hazeur (c1792-1860), were active musicians in the antebellum free-colored society of New Orleans. Two of Thomas Tio's sons, Louis (1862-1922) and Lorenzo (1867-1908), in turn became involved as clarinetists and arrangers in the marching bands, minstrel shows, and pit orchestras of late nineteenth-century New Orleans. The most widely known of the Tios, however, was Lorenzo, Jr. (1893-1933), who exerted a prime influence on the development of the early style of jazz clarinet performance. The teacher of Sidney Bechet and Barney Bigard, he performed with many jazz groups in New Orleans, Chicago, …

Optical Character Recognition Using Morphological Attributes., Gili Mendel Jan 1993

Optical Character Recognition Using Morphological Attributes., Gili Mendel

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation addresses a fundamental computational strategy in image processing hand written English characters using traditional parallel computers. Image acquisition and processing is becoming a thriving industry because of the frequent availability of fax machines, video digitizers, flat-bed scanners, hand scanners, color scanners, and other image input devices that are now accessible to everyone. Optical Character Recognition (OCR) research increased as the technology for a robust OCR system became realistic. There is no commercial effective recognition system that is able to translate raw digital images of hand written text into pure ASCII. The reason is that a digital image comprises …

Discourses Of Maternity And The Postmodern Narrative: A Study Of Lessing, Walker, And Atwood., Janet J. Montelaro Jan 1993

Discourses Of Maternity And The Postmodern Narrative: A Study Of Lessing, Walker, And Atwood., Janet J. Montelaro

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Doris Lessing's The Golden Notebook, Alice Walker's The Color Purple, and Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale are narrated by women whose social identities are partially constructed through activities traditionally associated with mothering. In each text, maternity signifies a biological event as well as the social, sexual, and material relations involved with pregnancy, childbirth, and the nurturing and rearing of children, activities which become grounds for investigating the politics of the body, of sexuality, and consequently, of gender relations. Maternity becomes politicized within the cultural contexts of each novel as maternal experience functions to produce both feminist and postmodernist critiques. In …

Circadian Neuroendocrine Regulation Of Scale Allograft Reactions In Gulf Killifish, Fundulus Grandis., Nicholas John Nevid Jan 1993

Circadian Neuroendocrine Regulation Of Scale Allograft Reactions In Gulf Killifish, Fundulus Grandis., Nicholas John Nevid

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Reactions against scale allografts in gulf killifish were studied to examine circadian variation and neuroendocrine regulation of immune function. Although melanophores in autografts remain viable indefinitely, melanophores in scale allografts were broken down predominantly at night (12-h scotophases) regardless of the time of transplantation. Daily treatment with hormones or antagonists of neuroendocrine receptors altered the rhythm of melanophore breakdown when administered at light onset or light offset. Daily rhythms of immune activity may be a direct reflection of growth hormone levels and are entrained by exogenous cortisol treatment. Daily nonphotoperiodic environmental stimuli overrode photoperiodic entrainment of immune activity. Peak melanophore …

Resistance predictors included rice water weevil larval populations, larval root pruning damage, plant height and grain yield. Anther culture lines 95-2836 and 95-3527, Louisiana breeding lines …

Antimicrobial Properties Of Glycerol Monolaurate Either Alone Or Combined With Selected Organic Acids Against Listeria Monocytogenes., Deog-Hwan Oh Jan 1993

Antimicrobial Properties Of Glycerol Monolaurate Either Alone Or Combined With Selected Organic Acids Against Listeria Monocytogenes., Deog-Hwan Oh

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The objective of this study was to evaluate the antimicrobial properties of glycerol monolaurate (monolaurin) either alone or in combination with organic acids against Listeria monocytogenes in model broth or food. The minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of monolaurin was reduced by decreasing the pH value of the medium. The contribution of temperature to monolaurin effectiveness showed that lethal effects of monolaurin increased at higher temperatures and lower pH values, whereas, bacteriostatic effects on growth increased as temperature and pH decreased. The inhibitory effect of ethanol on the growth of L. monocytogenes was slight up to 2.5% ethanol, but was significant …

Syntheses, Structures, And Characterizations Of 2,2',7,7'-Tetrasubstituted 1,1'-Ethynylenedinaphthalenes., Philippe Prince Jan 1993

Syntheses, Structures, And Characterizations Of 2,2',7,7'-Tetrasubstituted 1,1'-Ethynylenedinaphthalenes., Philippe Prince

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In order to study intramolecular enzyme catalysis, chemical models have been designed to quantify the proximity and orientation effects which occur in carboxylate catalyzed hydrolyses. As part of this broader study, various 2,2$\sp\prime$,7,7$\sp\prime$-tetrasubstituted 1,1$\sp\prime$-ethynylenedinaphthalenes are synthesized from 2,7-dihydroxynaphthalene. Two different strategies are used to obtain the title compounds. The first strategy involves palladium-mediated couplings between electron-poor aryl iodides and electron-rich arylethynes and allows synthesis of unsymmetrical binaphthylethynes. The second approach couples two 2,7-disubstituted naphthalenes with tetrachlorocyclopropene in the presence of aluminum chloride, but only symmetrical binaphthylethynes are obtained. During the course of this work, a number of 1,2,7-trisubstituted naphthalenes, some …

Attitude Formation And Development: An Investigation Of The Interrelationships Among Attitudinal Constructs And Their Resistance To Counterpersuasion., Melodie Ree Phillips

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The study examined the resistance of attitudes to counterpersuasion using the Elaboration Likelihood Model as a framework for analysis. The ELM postulated the centrally formed attitudes are more resistant to counterpersuasion than peripherally formed attitudes. A negative publicity setting was used to introduce respondents to a longitudinal study of attitude formation and change. A model was developed hypothesizing the role of company and brand cognitions would be significant in the formation of attitudes and intentions in central processors. It was hypothesized that A$\sb{\rm Ad}$ would be the primary influence on company and brand attitudes for peripheral processors. A sample of …
