Christianity And Social Power In The Works Of John Arden, British Dramatist., Donald Travis Sandley
Christianity And Social Power In The Works Of John Arden, British Dramatist., Donald Travis Sandley
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation examines the subject of political and social power in the plays and prose of John Arden and selected works co-authored by Arden and his wife, Margaretta D'Arcy. Particular focus is given to the institution of Christianity and how it may either be used as a tool for the maintenance of established authority or as a vehicle for rebellion. Arden's collected essays, along with a personal interview conducted in August of 1990, provide the starting point for a discussion of four specific works, pieces in which Arden most closely explores the political involvement of Christianity. These four works, The …
Origin Of A Coarse-Grained Shallow Marine Sandstone Complex: The Coniacian Tocito Sandstone, Northwestern New Mexico. (Volumes 1 And 2)., Gregory Wayne Riley
Origin Of A Coarse-Grained Shallow Marine Sandstone Complex: The Coniacian Tocito Sandstone, Northwestern New Mexico. (Volumes 1 And 2)., Gregory Wayne Riley
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Study of the Coniacian Tocito Sandstone, one of the shale-encased, shallow marine sandstone complexes in the Cretaceous Western Interior Basin, indicates that transport of coarse sediment to distal marine locations was accomplished by an increase in the efficiency of the marine dispersal system (tidal currents). Enhanced tidal currents were a consequence of bathymetric variations formed by uplifts along the pre-existing Four Corners Lineament system. The Tocito Sandstone forms an entirely marine, progradational-transgressive sequence and overlies an unconformity localized along uplifted submarine highs. The lower progradational strata represent the marine portion of a tide-dominated delta that prograded into a tectonically-created "embayment", …
Genetic Population Structure Of A Species Complex Of Blue Mussels (Mytilus Spp.)., Shane Kevin Sarver
Genetic Population Structure Of A Species Complex Of Blue Mussels (Mytilus Spp.)., Shane Kevin Sarver
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Mussels representing two species (Mytilus trossulus and M. galloprovincialis) were collected from 28 littoral locations on the Pacific coast of the USA, and examined for genetic variation at 15 allozyme loci. Eleven samples from a region of suspected hybridization between the two species were also analyzed for variation in seven shell characters. Analysis of allozyme data by principal components analysis revealed three groups based on first principal component scores, and were identified as M. trossulus, M. galloprovincialis and hybrids. Canonical discriminate analysis of seven shell characters was less successful in separating mussels based on morphological criteria alone. To explore the …
An Ethnographic Investigation Of Compensatory Strategies In Aphasia. (Volumes I And Ii)., Nina Newlin Simmons
An Ethnographic Investigation Of Compensatory Strategies In Aphasia. (Volumes I And Ii)., Nina Newlin Simmons
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
An ethnographic investigation of compensatory strategies in two individuals with nonfluent aphasia was undertaken. Data were collected from videorecordings of natural conversations between subjects and a variety of partners, observations of speech-language pathology assessment and therapy sessions, participant observations, ethnographic interviews, lamination sessions and documentary evidence. Data were analyzed to identify compensatory strategies employed by the aphasic subjects, to determine patterns of occurrence and functions of compensatory strategies, to determine the expectations and practices of speech-language pathologists, and to identify underlying themes relative to compensatory strategy usage. An operational definition of compensatory strategy was derived from the data, and every …
Reliability Analysis Of The Hypercube Architecture., Sieteng Soh
Reliability Analysis Of The Hypercube Architecture., Sieteng Soh
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation presents improved techniques for analyzing network-connected (NCF), 2-connected (2CF), task-based (TBF), and subcube (SF) functionality measures in a hypercube multiprocessor with faulty processing elements (PE) and/or communication elements (CE). These measures help study system-level fault tolerance issues and relate to various application modes in the hypercube. Solutions discussed in the text fall into probabilistic and deterministic models. The probabilistic measure assumes a stochastic graph of the hypercube where PE's and/or CE's may fail with certain probabilities, while the deterministic model considers that some system components are already failed and aims to determine the system functionality. For probabilistic model, …
Interaction Between Hydrodynamics And Sediment Topography On Meiofaunal Abundance And Distribution., Bin Sun
Interaction Between Hydrodynamics And Sediment Topography On Meiofaunal Abundance And Distribution., Bin Sun
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The objective of this dissertation was to investigate the small-scale spatial and abundance patterns of meiofauna and their relationship with sediment microtopography and hydrodynamics. Meiofauna are known to be aggregated at small spatial scales. A study was first undertaken to determine, how patchiness differed over seasons and habitats. Significant small-scale aggregations were remarkably consistent across different seasons and habitats for all abundant copepods of an intertidal mudflat. Spatial autocorrelation analysis showed that the abundance of copepods was autocorrelated at short distances (cm scale) on all sample collecting dates, indicating a consistent spatial pattern. Small-scale variation contributed heavily to the components …

A Sixth-Grade Literature Discourse Community: Making Social Meaning With Illustrated Literature During Interactive Reading Events., Elizabeth Lee Willis
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The study focused on six at-risk students enrolled in the sixth grade at a large urban Southern middle school. These students, along with their classroom teacher, participated in two interactive reading events using illustrated trade books. The purpose of the study was to examine how these students used the pictures and text to create meaning for the stories. The two illustrated selections differed in story complexity, amount of world knowledge required for interpretation, and relationship of pictures to text (i.e., a close relationship indicated both picture and text communicated similar information, while a distanced relationship indicated one source provided story …
Electron-Pair Analysis For Doubly Excited Ridge States., Lijun Zhang
Electron-Pair Analysis For Doubly Excited Ridge States., Lijun Zhang
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
We study doubly excited states of atoms and negative ions by electron-pair analysis. The two-electron Schrodinger equation is analyzed in hyperspherical coordinates, with the electrons described throughout as a pair. In contrast to the current adiabatic hyperspherical method, which reverts at large distances to a description in terms of individual electrons, the pair aspect is preserved also asymptotically. Whereas the adiabatic potential wells converge to the single ionization limit, we develop potential wells converging to the double ionization limit of the system, and doubly excited states are then viewed as eigenstates of the pair in these wells. At the simplest …

Adrian Willaert's "Musica Nova" Selected Motets: Editions And Commentary. (Volumes I And Ii)., Bradley Leonard Almquist
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Adrian Willaert was a pivotal figure in Renaissance music. As a composer, he contributed significantly to the secular repertories of the madrigal, canzone villanesca, and chanson. He was possibly the first madrigal composer outside of the genre's Roman/Florentine origins. In sacred music, Willaert contributed to the development of cori spezzati, the split-choir technique, generally associated with the Venetian School, composed at least nine masses, polyphonic settings of hymns, and approximately 173 motets. In addition to his compositions in the major vocal forms of the period, Willaert made considerable contributions to the teaching of music and music theory, establishing St. Mark's …
Comparison Of Word Recognition And Story Retelling Under The Conditions Of Contextualized Versus Decontextualized Reading Events In At-Risk Poor Readers., Linda Cain Badon
Comparison Of Word Recognition And Story Retelling Under The Conditions Of Contextualized Versus Decontextualized Reading Events In At-Risk Poor Readers., Linda Cain Badon
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study investigated the relative effects of two instructional approaches on reading recognition and comprehension of passages read by low-SES first grade children. It was hypothesized that use of a contextualized instructional approach (i.e., Communicative Reading Strategies) (CRS) which facilitated written language processing (i.e., vocabulary acquisition, grammatical understanding, narrative structure, and passage comprehension) within the context of oral reading would result in better internalization of a written story than would decontextualized activities (i.e., Directed Reading) (DR) targeting the same behaviors immediately preceding or following the reading of a story. The efficacy of the two treatments was measured by (1) fluency …
First Ray Joint Mobility, Pressure And Ulceration Of The First Metatarsal Head In Diabetic Patients., James Allen Birke
First Ray Joint Mobility, Pressure And Ulceration Of The First Metatarsal Head In Diabetic Patients., James Allen Birke
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation reviews the pathomechanics of plantar ulceration in patients with diabetes mellitus, and studies the relationship between joint mobility, pressure and the location of ulceration at the first metatarsal head. Neuropathy, mechanical stress and vascular disease have been shown to be the primary causes of ulceration in patients with diabetes. Sensory neuropathy is considered the permissive cause of plantar ulceration. Plantar ulcerations do not occur without loss of sensation in the foot. Other factors including motor neuropathy, autonomic neuropathy, abnormal mechanical stress, foot deformity, joint limitation, and hyperkeratosis are considered important component causes in plantar ulceration. Autonomic neuropathy and …
Genetic Algorithms And The Satisfiability Of Large-Scale Boolean Expressions., Thomas A. Bitterman
Genetic Algorithms And The Satisfiability Of Large-Scale Boolean Expressions., Thomas A. Bitterman
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The two new genetic methods overpopulation and bitwise expected value are introduced. In overpopulation a temporary population of size Mn (M $>$ 1) is created using genetic operators and the n children with the highest estimated fitness values are selected as the next generation. The rest are discarded. Bitwise expected value (bev) is the fitness estimation function used. Overpopulation and bitwise expected value are applied to the NP-complete problem 3SAT (a special form of Satisfiability in which the boolean expression consists of the conjunction of an arbitrary number of clauses where each clause consists of the disjunction of 3 …

Resolution Of Genotypic And Phenotypic Properties Of Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 Temperature-Sensitive Mutanttsz47: Evidence For Allelic Complementation In The Unique Long Gene Ul28., James Daniel Cavalcoli
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This research focuses on the phenotypic and genotypic characteristics of a temperature sensitive mutant of herpes simplex virus type 1, HSV-1 (tsZ47). This virus was previously reported to carry two different mutations, which caused it to be temperature sensitive for viral replication and transport of glycoproteins to the infected cell surface. However, altered glycoprotein transport to the cell surface was not observed in this study. In addition, cells transformed with unique long gene 28 (UL28), but not glycoprotein B (gB), complemented tsZ47 at the nonpermissive temperature indicating that a single mutation could restore the wild type phenotype to the mutant …

Studies On The Energy Mobilizing Hormones In Insects., Subrata Das
Studies On The Energy Mobilizing Hormones In Insects., Subrata Das
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Chemical factors controlling the energy mobilization in three species of insects were identified, partially characterized and their role in the process of energy mobilization were studied. High performance liquid chromatographic fractions were isolated from methanolic extracts of the corpora cardiaca (CC) from the honeybee Apis mellifera, the paper wasp Polistes exclamans and the house cricket Acheta domesticus. Each species had a single active fraction that was able to elevate the lipid titer in Acheta. Pyroglutamate aminopeptidase digestion of isolated active fractions indicated that these molecules are all peptides with a terminal pyroglutamate. Methanolic extracts of CC from Apis, Polistes and …

A New Therapeutic Concept Based On Hyperstabilization Of Sense-Antisense Duplexes., Dae-Yong Kim
A New Therapeutic Concept Based On Hyperstabilization Of Sense-Antisense Duplexes., Dae-Yong Kim
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
We proposed that known helix-stabilizing, minor-groove binding agents such as CC-1065 and its analog, U-71,184, might be feasibly targeted to specific mRNA by tethering them to antisense oligonucleotides. The CC-1065-tethered antisense oligonucleotide might be hyperstabilized to the target mRNA and arrest the translation of mRNA. Our hypothesis is that these agents can bind and increase the stability of RNA-DNA duplexes which may occur between mRNA and antisense oligonucleotides. To verify our hypothesis, we evaluated the ability of CC-1065, U-71,184, and distamycin A to bind and hyperstabilize the 20-mer sense sequence (5$\sp\prime$-TTACTTCAGTTATGAGACCA-3$\sp\prime)$ duplexed with complementary (antisense) oligonucleotide sequence made with phosphodiester …

Pedogenic Development Of Soils At High Altitude In Burundi., Salvator Kaburungu
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
To evaluate the effects of long-term cultivation and pasture on deforested soils at high altitude in Burundi, comparisons of morphological, physical, chemical and mineralogical properties of soils under natural forest with their counterparts under cultivation and pasture were performed. A typical soil under natural forest classifies as fine, oxidic, isomesic, Typic Haplorthods. Cultivated soils classify as fine, oxidic, isothermic Humic Hapludoxs. Pastured soils classify as fine, oxidic, isothermic, allic Humic Hapludoxs. When the sombric horizon is prominent, they classify as Sombriudoxs. We proposed a Spodic subgroup for the Hapludoxs. The studied area was highly weathered prior to faulting and uplifting …
Acetylation Of Seaweed Alginate By Pseudomonas Syringae., Jin Woo Lee
Acetylation Of Seaweed Alginate By Pseudomonas Syringae., Jin Woo Lee
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Acetylation of bacterial alginate by Pseudomonas syringae subsp. phaseolicola ATCC 19304 was independent of alginate biosynthesis. This allowed the development of a process for acetylating seaweed alginate using immobilized P. syringae ATCC 19304 cells. About 50% of the mannuronic acid residues of seaweed alginate were acetylated by carbon immobilized P. syringae cells in a fluidized bed, up-flow reactor system fed continuously with seaweed alginate and gluconic acid. O-Acetylation by this process was found to be specific for the C-2 and/or C-3 position(s) of mannuronate residues. Acetylated seaweed alginate showed altered properties including increased viscosity and changed affinities for some cations.

Determinants Of Mangrove Species Distribution In Neotropical Forests: Biotic And Abiotic Factors Affecting Seedling Survival And Growth., Karen Lee Mckee
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Mangroves are salt-tolerant trees and shrubs that dominate the intertidal zone in many tropical and subtropical coastal regions. These intertidal forests often exhibit relatively distinct and recurring patterns of species distribution. A series of field and laboratory experiments examined biotic and abiotic factors affecting survival and growth of three neotropical mangrove species: Rhizophora mangle (red mangrove), Avicennia germinans (black mangrove), and Laguncularia racemosa (white mangrove). A field survey across a mangrove island range in Belize revealed six vegetation zones based on differences in dominant canopy species, size and vigor of the trees, spatial position relative to the shoreline, and hydro-edaphic …

The movement of agricultural chemical contaminants in alluvial soils with a shallow water table in a warm, humid environment was evaluated in this study. Bromide, a non-adsorbent tracer, was used to assess the pathways of water and solute in the soil profile. The movement and fate of three commonly used herbicides: Trifluralin, Metolachlor, and Metribuzin were determined. The data gathered from the herbicide study were used to compare with the results of simulation to validate the pesticide component of the GLEAMS model. The study was conducted at the Ben Hur Research Farm of the Louisiana Agricultural Experiment Station. Five relatively …
A Cross-Age Study Of Students' Knowledge Of Insect Metamorphosis: Insights Into Their Understanding Of Evolution., Mary Susan Nichols
A Cross-Age Study Of Students' Knowledge Of Insect Metamorphosis: Insights Into Their Understanding Of Evolution., Mary Susan Nichols
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Insect metamorphosis is relatively easy to explain at a superficial level, but a deep understanding of the concept reveals a complex array of interrelationships, most importantly those that address evolution. This is significant because, in biology, evolution is considered to be a central theme. Participants for this study were selected from grades 5, 7, 9, and 11 according to low, middle, or high achievement levels in their science classes, and to scores on a national achievement test. The research incorporated a three-level response strategy in order to ascertain more completely students' knowledge of insect metamorphosis, and to better suggest how …
The Impact Of Budget Variance, Fiscal Stress, Political Turnover, And Employment Sector On Compliance Reporting Decisions., Linda Achey Kidwell
The Impact Of Budget Variance, Fiscal Stress, Political Turnover, And Employment Sector On Compliance Reporting Decisions., Linda Achey Kidwell
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) established that financial reports of governmental entities should assist users in assessing accountability of politicians and bureaucracies (GASB 1987, 100.103). Auditing standards promulgated for the governmental environment similarly emphasize administrative accountability to the public. Government Auditing Standards (GAS) require auditors to determine whether a governmental entity has complied with all applicable laws and regulations. If noncompliance is found to have a material effect on the financial statements, governmental auditors are required to report it. This study examined what level of reporting auditors use and what factors contribute to a lack of consensus in reporting …

Strongylus Vulgaris: Protection, Pathology And Humoral Immune Responses In The Immunized Pony., Clifton Michael Monahan
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Protective resistance to Strongylus vulgaris infection was examined by immunization of ponies with radiation-attenuated larvae or soluble parasite homogenates. Twelve yearling ponies raised and maintained under parasite-free conditions were divided into four groups which received either radiation-attenuated L$\sb3$; aqueous-soluble adult somatic antigens plus adjuvant; aqueous-soluble larval somatic antigens with excretory/secretory products and adjuvant; or media with adjuvant. Ponies were immunized twice; radiation-attenuated L$\sb3$ were administered orally and soluble antigens or control injections were given intramuscularly. Six weeks following the second immunization, ponies were challenged per os with virulent S. vulgaris L$\sb3.$ Ponies were monitored twice daily for rectal temperatures and …
Soil Processes Related To Marsh Loss In Coastal Louisiana., John Andrew Nyman
Soil Processes Related To Marsh Loss In Coastal Louisiana., John Andrew Nyman
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Marsh loss in Louisiana ($\sim$8,000 ha/yr) is attributed primarily to salt-water intrusion, flooding, and sediment starvation. Soil processes were studied to complement previous work identifying causes rather than mechanisms. Relationships between soil mineral and organic matter were examined to better understand accretion, which counters subsidence and sea-level rise. More soil volume was occupied by organic matter than mineral matter in fresh, intermediate, and brackish soil. Estimated mineral sediment requirements for accretion were 6.7 times greater in salt marsh than in fresh marsh. Sediment requirements probably increase seaward because of sulfate in seawater, reduction of sulfate to toxic sulfides in soil, …
Reconstructability Theory For General Systems And Its Application To Automated Rule Learning., Sudhir Kumar Trivedi
Reconstructability Theory For General Systems And Its Application To Automated Rule Learning., Sudhir Kumar Trivedi
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The two problems in reconstructability analysis, abbreviated as RA, are referred to as the reconstructability problem and the identification problem. The former relates to the process of reconstructing a given system under a given criterion from the knowledge of its subsystems and, during this process, identifying those subsystems that are important in the reconstruction. The latter allows the identification of an unknown system from the knowledge of its subsystems. The advent of RA has intensified the research efforts on system studies. The objective of this research is to study the process of system reconstruction for general systems and apply it …
"Sequenza Vii" By Luciano Berio: Background, Analysis And Performance Suggestions., Carrie Marie Vecchione
"Sequenza Vii" By Luciano Berio: Background, Analysis And Performance Suggestions., Carrie Marie Vecchione
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Sequenza VII by Luciano Berio is regarded as one of the major twentieth-century pieces for the oboe. Its unique sounds and logic make it both fascinating and complex. Great demands are put on the performer, who must produce difficult, unconventional sounds. The listener is likewise challenged to accept this new language. An initial hearing can leave a listener excited though baffled, as a first look at the score can cause trepidation even in a fearless performer. The purpose of this paper is to find some order to this compelling piece. This comprehensive study is undertaken from three different perspectives, each …
Dynamic Behavior Of Headspace Gases In Modified Atmosphere Packaging For Meat., Yanyun Zhao
Dynamic Behavior Of Headspace Gases In Modified Atmosphere Packaging For Meat., Yanyun Zhao
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Headspace gas composition in food packaging undergoes dynamic changes as a result of film permeability, postmortem metabolic activity, CO$\sb2$ absorption in water and lipid, and bacteria growth and respiration. A methodology to study dynamic behavior of headspace CO$\sb2$ was developed and used to identify the significant factors influencing CO$\sb2$ behavior within modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) systems for beef. Additionally, a mathematical structure suitable for modeling microbial growth in MAP systems was presented. A combined analytical and experimental method was developed to investigate headspace CO$\sb2$ changes during isothermal storage. The ideal gas law was used as a theoretical basis, and a …

Self-Consistent Cluster Embedding Calculation Method And The Electronic Structure Of Nickel Oxide And Cobalt Oxide., Haoping Zheng
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
We present a self-consistent cluster embedding method to study the electronic structure of solids by ab initio, local spin density functional calculations. A theoretical discussion from the viewpoint of total energy is given, and a definition of the total energy for an embedded cluster is introduced. We have constructed a general LCGO cluster-embedding program package, and developed a procedure to simulate the spin disordered states with local antiferromagnetic (AF) order. The electronic structures of NiO and CoO are studied by this method with a high quality basis set. The two materials show similar antiferromagnetic insulating ground states with both localized …
