The Development Of An Inventory To Measure Bereavement., David Nicholas Hayes Jan 1993

The Development Of An Inventory To Measure Bereavement., David Nicholas Hayes

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study describes the development of a self-report inventory to measure bereavement. The inventory was called the Hayes Bereavement Inventory (HBI). Items for the inventory were provided by four grief therapists with at least three years of experience in bereavement counseling. Items were written in a format similar to the Beck Depression Inventory. Four hundred and forty adults bereaved in the past five years completed the bereavement inventory, three widely used self-report measures of depression, anxiety, and anger, and the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire. Respondents lost loved ones to death from a variety of causes which included medical diseases, car accidents, …

Attentional Bias And Subjective Risk In Hypochondriacal Concern., Polly Beth Hitchcock Jan 1993

Attentional Bias And Subjective Risk In Hypochondriacal Concern., Polly Beth Hitchcock

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Although cognitive theories suggest that attentional bias to illness stimuli and inflation of subjective risk of future negative health events are etiologically related to hypochondriacal concern, little empirical research has been conducted on these cognitive distortions. The present study investigated attentional bias, as inferred from RTs on an attentional search information processing paradigm, and subjective risk, as measured by probability judgments of future health events, in 200 medical outpatients differing in level of hypochondriacal concern. It was hypothesized that hypochondriacal concern would be associated with specific cognitive biases for illness-related, as opposed to socially threatening, stimuli. It was also hypothesized …

Mathematical Model Of Hairy Root Growth., Seungdo Kim Jan 1993

Mathematical Model Of Hairy Root Growth., Seungdo Kim

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Hairy roots produce secondary metabolites which have been used as specialty chemicals. The mathematical models of hairy root growth kinetics can guide the design and scale-up of root cultures. An unstructured segregated and a chemically structured segregated models for hairy growth kinetics are formulated with rules of root branching processes. The deterministic branching rule and the stochastic branching rule are studied. For the deterministic rule where two branching parameters are assumed constant, the number of tips can be obtained by solving a linear difference equation. The conceptual framework established for the deterministic rule is used to formulate a stochastic rule …

Pollutant Transport In Buoyancy Driven Atmospheric Flows., Youn-Seo Koo Jan 1993

Pollutant Transport In Buoyancy Driven Atmospheric Flows., Youn-Seo Koo

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Due to the complexity of some buoyancy driven atmospheric flows, it is sometimes not possible to accurately predict pollutant transport on the basis of sparse wind field measurements. A possible solution is mathematical modelling of both the flow and pollutant transport. In order to overcome shortcomings of the conventional E-$\epsilon$ model such as defining proportionality coefficients (c$\sb{\rm m},$ c$\sb{\rm h})$ and to develop a more general model of stratified environmental flows, a modified E-$\epsilon$ model was proposed through use of the algebraic stress model including wall proximity effects. The resulting model was compared herein to data and higher order simulations …

Mobilization Of A Hydrophobic Organic Compound Using Surfactant For Soil Washing., Minwen Liu Jan 1993

Mobilization Of A Hydrophobic Organic Compound Using Surfactant For Soil Washing., Minwen Liu

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Soil washing using surfactants is a promising alternative for the conventional pump-and-treat method of removing hydrophobic organic compounds. The interactions and the transport of the chemicals have been studied by batch and column experiments. Sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS), an anionic surfactant, and anthracene, a hydrophobic organic, were chosen as the representative surfactant and contaminant, respectively. Fine sand and native soil were used as formation media. The experimental results indicated that the maximum loss of SDS on native soil from the solution was observed when the aqueous SDS concentration was in the region of the critical micelle concentration, and this loss was …

Engineering Analysis Of Solid Waste Management., Woodward Reid Lea Jan 1993

Engineering Analysis Of Solid Waste Management., Woodward Reid Lea

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A practical methodology has been developed to analyze the cost of integrated solid waste management, which is defined as the selection and application of suitable techniques, technologies and management programs to achieve specific waste management objectives and goals, using some combination of recycling, composting, transfer to remote disposal, waste-to-energy, and landfills. The cost of both integrated and non-integrated solid waste management systems can be accurately analyzed by the methodology. Regional waste management scenarios can also be evaluated and the resulting cost estimates compared to the cost of current local waste management. A computer model has been written to execute the …

A Non-Proportional Cyclic Plasticity Model For Metals With Ratchetting Effects., Srinivasan Madras Sivakumar Jan 1993

A Non-Proportional Cyclic Plasticity Model For Metals With Ratchetting Effects., Srinivasan Madras Sivakumar

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The path-dependent and nonlinear behavior of metallic materials subjected to cyclic loading is modelled using the proposed hardening rule. It uses mainly two surfaces, a yield and a limit surface and includes the memory effects through a separate surface called the memory surface which is obtained from a maximum stress criterion. The model considers the facts that the motion of the center of the yield surface in the stress space is mainly governed by the direction of the deviatoric stress rate and that the uniqueness of the solution requires nesting of the two surfaces. The model proposed satisfies both conditions …

Functional Morphology Of The Lingual Apparatus Of Sandgrouse (Aves: Pteroclidae)., Werner Muller Jan 1993

Functional Morphology Of The Lingual Apparatus Of Sandgrouse (Aves: Pteroclidae)., Werner Muller

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The morphology of the lingual apparatus of three species of sandgrouse (Aves; Pteroclidae) has been described. All biomechanically important parts were included in the description, i.e., all muscles potentially involved in the functioning of the lingual apparatus, all skeletal parts, the salivary glands associated with the lingual apparatus, and the surface morphology of the oropharyngeal cavity. For each muscle its potential functions have been described. In a comparison with data from the literature of three other groups of birds it was found that the functional organization of the lingual apparatus of the sandgrouse is strikingly similar to the one found …

Analytical Model Of The Progression Of Cracking In Fiber-Reinforced Composites., Jane L. D Runkle Jan 1993

Analytical Model Of The Progression Of Cracking In Fiber-Reinforced Composites., Jane L. D Runkle

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Two analytical shear lag models have been developed for the progressive damage and final failure of epoxy matrix, fiber-reinforced composites under biaxial loading. The first is a three layer model for laminates of the type ($\pm\theta$,90n) s under general biaxial loading. It gives matrix cracking predictions for the central 90$\sp\circ$ ply group. The second model is a five-layer model for laminates of the type (90n/0m/90p) s under biaxial loading, but it does not include in-plane shear. The five-layer model predicts matrix cracking in all ply groups. The amount of damage in terms of modulus decrease and number of matrix cracks …

Stratigraphy, Diagenesis, And Petroleum Geology Of The Smackover Formation, Southwest Alabama., William James Wade Jan 1993

Stratigraphy, Diagenesis, And Petroleum Geology Of The Smackover Formation, Southwest Alabama., William James Wade

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The sequence stratigraphic framework of the Smackover Formation and other Jurassic strata in southwest Alabama is delineated, with the objective of eventual correlation of equivalent sequences across the northern Gulf. Additionally, geologic controls on the diagenesis of organic matter in the Smackover Formation are examined, in order to better understand organic-inorganic interaction and hydrocarbon evolution during burial. Jurassic systems tracts of southwest Alabama differ significantly from those of the north central Gulf in that they show profound influence of antecedent topography, consequent large continental clastic influx, and a subsidence history less influenced by thermal cooling. Norphlet siliciclastics constitute a continental …

Mechanisms Of Crater Formation While Drilling A Well., Luiz Alberto Santos Rocha Jan 1993

Mechanisms Of Crater Formation While Drilling A Well., Luiz Alberto Santos Rocha

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Current well control practice for land or bottom-supported marine rigs usually calls for shutting-in the well when a kick is detected if sufficient casing has been set to keep any flow underground. In addition, the working pressure of the casing and surface equipment is maintained high enough to insure that formation fracture occurs before a failure of these items. Even if high shut-in pressures are seen, an underground blowout is preferred over a surface blowout. On the other hand, an operator will put the well on a diverter if he believes that the casing is not set deep enough to …

Differential Comparison Standards And Their Subsequent Effects On The Agreement Between Self- And Supervisor Performance Appraisal Ratings., Brian Wayne Schrader Jan 1993

Differential Comparison Standards And Their Subsequent Effects On The Agreement Between Self- And Supervisor Performance Appraisal Ratings., Brian Wayne Schrader

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study examined differential comparison standards (i.e., comparative bases for performance evaluation) and their effects on the level of agreement between supervisory and self-raters (i.e., subordinates) within the context of a performance appraisal system. The purpose of the research was to determine whether differential comparison standards represented an underlying mechanism in the traditionally poor correlational relationship between self-supervisor performance ratings. Supervisor and subordinate rater dyads (N = 106 dyads) evaluated job performance across three dimensions using five different comparison standards (ambiguous, internal, absolute, relative, and multiple) in addition to providing preference, availability, and relevancy ratings. Results supported the hypotheses indicating …

Drug extraction methods using matrix solid phase dispersion (MSPD), drug screening methods using enzyme-linked immunoassay (ELISA), and drug residue quantitation methods using high pressure liquid chromatography (LC) are presented. All methods were developed for the simultaneous extraction and analysis of the parent compound and metabolite. MSPD extracts of muscle or plasma were …

Effect Of Cementation On Cone Resistance In Sands: A Calibration Chamber Study., Anand Jagadeesh Puppala Jan 1993

Effect Of Cementation On Cone Resistance In Sands: A Calibration Chamber Study., Anand Jagadeesh Puppala

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

An understanding of the effect of cementation on geotechnical properties of soil deposits is gaining increasing attention in the profession. When low levels of cementation in sands are neglected, pile capacity and slope stability are underestimated and liquefaction is overestimated. It is essential to devise schemes to identify cementation in soil investigations and develop methods in evaluating engineering characteristics of cemented deposits. The objective of this study is to develop a method to identify cementation in sands and assess the engineering characteristics of cemented sand deposits using the cone penetration testing scheme. The scope of the study includes evaluation of …

Relationship Between Vegetation And Soil Formation In A Rapidly Submerging Coastal Marsh, J. A. Nyman, R. D. Delaune, H. H. Roberts, W. H. Patrick Jan 1993

Relationship Between Vegetation And Soil Formation In A Rapidly Submerging Coastal Marsh, J. A. Nyman, R. D. Delaune, H. H. Roberts, W. H. Patrick

Faculty Publications

In a Terrebonne Basin (Louisiana) marsh, Cs dating indicated that vertical accretion (0.98cm yr ) was extremely rapid relative to other marshes, but insufficient to counter submergence (1.38cm yr ). Mineral and organic matter accumulation were similar to that in other marshes. This marsh is threatened by a positive feedback loop of plant flooding stress and inadequate vertical accretion. Inadequate plant growth limits vertical accretion, which further increases flooding and decreases plant production. Thus plant production partly determines the degree of submergence some coastal and estuarine marshes will tolerate. -from Authors 137 -1 -1

Leg 152, selected as first priority by the North Atlantic Rifted Margin Detailed Planning Group (NARM-DPG), will be the first leg to address processes at volcanic rifted margins by drilling a transect of proposed sites at 63°N, southeast Greenland. The southeast Greenland transect is located approximately 550 km south of the original center of the Iceland hotspot in a region of apparent structural simplicity, with a well-understood, simple plate kinematic history. …

A Monte Carlo Method In Contribution Response Transport., Charles Habib Aboughantous Jan 1993

A Monte Carlo Method In Contribution Response Transport., Charles Habib Aboughantous

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A contribution response Monte Carlo method is developed and successfully applied to a sample deep penetration shielding problem. The random walk is simulated in most of its parts like in conventional M.C. by introducing the concept of a fictitious response particle. The scoring is peculiar to the proposed method and it need not be made at the detector itself so that computing time can be reduced by an order of magnitude or more depending on the geometry of the problem. The probability density functions are natural. They possess properties not encountered in conventional M.C. methods currently in use. The selection …

The Poetry In-Between: Presence And Absence In Whitman, Rimbaud, And Hopkins., Jonathan Flint Alexander Jan 1993

The Poetry In-Between: Presence And Absence In Whitman, Rimbaud, And Hopkins., Jonathan Flint Alexander

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

"The Poetry In-Between: Presence and Absence in Whitman, Rimbaud, and Hopkins" analyzes three major nineteenth-century poets and their development of a poetics which has as its chief focus of concern the issue of presencing an eternal and universal "Other" by which to assess self identity. After the Kantian critique and the seeming reduction of human knowledge to phenomenal perceptions, early nineteenth-century poets and theorists feared the entrapment and isolation of the self in subjective awareness. The romantics, such as Friedrich Schlegel, sought ways to overcome such alienating subjectivity and ultimately conceived of the poet as a privileged spokesman and arbiter …

Immunoglobulin specificity for the Hepatitis A virus was determined and the antibodies were applied toward the development of an antigen capture assay linked to a nucleic acid amplification step (RT-PCR), for detection of the Hepatitis A virus. The neutralizing mouse monoclonal antibody and a rabbit polyvalent serum were assessed as capture antibodies for the immunoaffinity stage of the assay. Fifty microliter microfuge tubes were coated with the capture antibody. Formalin inactivated HAV was diluted to concentrations …

Characterization Of The Subunits Of The Mcrbc Restriction System In Escherichia Coli K12., Timothy Paul Beary Jan 1993

Characterization Of The Subunits Of The Mcrbc Restriction System In Escherichia Coli K12., Timothy Paul Beary

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The McrBC (Modified Cytosine Restriction) restriction system has the ability to restrict DNA containing 5-hydroxymethylcytosine, N$\sp4$-methylcytosine, and 5-methylcytosine at specific sequences. The mcrB gene produces two gene products. The complete mcrB open reading frame produces a 53-kDa protein (McrB$\sb{\rm L}$) and a 35-kDa protein (McrB$\sb{\rm S}).$ The smaller McrB polypeptide is produced from an inframe, internal translational start in the mcrB gene. The mcrC gene produces a single 38-kDa protein. Evidence was presented that McrB$\sb{\rm S}$ regulates the activity of McrBC. When McrB$\sb{\rm S}$ was overproduced in a McrBC$\sp+$ background, there was dramatic loss of restriction. Underproduction of this protein …

Peasant Subsistence In Northwestern Haiti: Geography, Cultural Ecology, And Rural Development., Edward Cameron Britton Jan 1993

Peasant Subsistence In Northwestern Haiti: Geography, Cultural Ecology, And Rural Development., Edward Cameron Britton

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Geographers are challenged to explain "the why of where." This study grapples with "whys" of peasant subsistence in contemporary rural Haiti. Cultural ecology, one of the fundamental themes in cultural geography, examines the interplay between cultural traditions and the realities of subsistence in a given physical environment. Haitian cultural traditions derive from a rich melange of folkways from West Africa, Indian Middle America, and Western Europe. The land is semiarid and hilly in Northwestern Haiti, the poorest, driest, and most sparsely settled of Haiti's provinces. Crops and livestock betray traditional preferences in foodways, and reveal much about the constraints of …
