Windows To Critical Thinking: Perspectives On Pedagogy In Henry James's "The Bostonians", Carson Mccullers's "The Heart Is A Lonely Hunter", And Frederick Douglass's "Narrative Of The Life Of Frederick Douglass, An American Slave"., James Thomas Mullane
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Many times teachers restrict students to viewing literature through a single "preferred" window or from a rather small set of tiny windows, thus hindering their ability to think critically and make choices for themselves. It is my contention that our pedagogy should facilitate a "school of windows" in which students are offered many different vantage points from which to "see" literature--an environment which, instead of monologically conditioning them to accept content without criticism or question, dialogically allows them their own place and importance in active discourse. This study delineates the power that literature has to enable students to acquire these …
The Southern Baptist Convention Reformation, 1979-1990: A Social Drama., William Stanley Stone Jr
The Southern Baptist Convention Reformation, 1979-1990: A Social Drama., William Stanley Stone Jr
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
From Michael Thompson, Richard Ellis, and Aaron Wildavsky's cultural theory perspective, the authoritarian and the individualistic ways of life have coexisted in the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) for more than a century. In 1979, Southern Baptist fundamentalists began a concerted movement to reform the SBC according to authoritarian beliefs and social practices. From Victor Turner's dramaturgical perspective, the 1979-1990 Southern Baptist controversy was a social drama that transferred power and reshaped Southern Baptists' perception of the past, present, and future. Rhetorical strategies facilitated each stage of the fundamentalists' reformation movement and the moderate counter movement. The present study symbolically explicates …
Energy Management In Louisiana's Public School Districts., Debra T. Acosta
Energy Management In Louisiana's Public School Districts., Debra T. Acosta
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Revenues for public education are declining and school budgets are being evaluated for ways to cut waste. The maintenance and operations budget often falls victim to the budget ax as maintenance on equipment and buildings is deferred. It may be that as a result of the deferred maintenance, school districts are actually spending more on maintenance and operations and energy than before. This study sought to determine the status of energy use in Louisiana's 66 public school districts and to determine the need for an energy management education program in those districts. Data for the 1991-92 school year were collected …
Effect Of The El Nino/Southern Oscillation On Gulf Of Mexico, Winter, Frontal-Wave Cyclones: 1960-1989. (Volumes I And Ii)., Rosemary Eileen Manty
Effect Of The El Nino/Southern Oscillation On Gulf Of Mexico, Winter, Frontal-Wave Cyclones: 1960-1989. (Volumes I And Ii)., Rosemary Eileen Manty
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Seasonal counts of frontal-wave cyclones forming over the Gulf of Mexico and its coastal plain show more storms in the five El Nino winters and fewer storms in the eight La Nina winters, from 1960 to 1989, significant at the.01 level by a rank sum test. This is corroborated by two results. First, during the same period, the frequency of frontal-overrunning weather conditions in the region, indicative of storms, was higher in El Nino winters and lower in La Nina winters, significant at the.05 level. Second, 100 years of precipitation and temperature records show wetter, cooler El Nino winters and …
High-Temperature High-Pressure Carbon Dioxide Removal From Coal Gas., Arpaden Silaban
High-Temperature High-Pressure Carbon Dioxide Removal From Coal Gas., Arpaden Silaban
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The noncatalytic gas-solid reaction between CO$\sb2$(g) and CaO(s) to form CaCO$\sb3$(s) has been studied at high temperature and high pressure (HTHP) using a thermobalance reactor. This reaction could serve as the basis for a HTHP process for the separation of CO$\sb2$ from coal-derived gas. The kinetics of the calcination and carbonation reactions were studied as a function of temperature, pressure, CO$\sb2$ concentration, and background gas composition. Three sorbent precursors which produced CaO having a wide range of structural properties were selected for detailed kinetic studies. They were (i) reagent grade calcium carbonate, (ii) reagent grade calcium acetate, and (iii) commercial …
Rewriting The Masculine: The National Subject In Modern American Drama., Francis Granger Babcock
Rewriting The Masculine: The National Subject In Modern American Drama., Francis Granger Babcock
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation traces the development of an American masculinity, using the concept of the national subject (borrowed from Frantz Fanon), through three different stages of the American capitalism: mercantile, or market, monopoly, and corporate, or late-capitalism. It constructs a genealogy of American maleness and then examines how this genealogy was altered and reconstituted during times of economic crisis and technological innovation. It argues that successive technological revolutions in the symbolic apparatus of American culture allowed elite political and economic interests to gain consensus by deploying the national subject using various media. In the early national period Franklin and Crevecoeur used …
Subordinate Independence: A Boundary Condition On The Effectiveness Of Transformational Leadership?, Terry Michael Dockery
Subordinate Independence: A Boundary Condition On The Effectiveness Of Transformational Leadership?, Terry Michael Dockery
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The present study hypothesized that subordinate independence would act as a boundary condition on the effectiveness of transformation leadership; that is, that independence would moderate the relationship between transformational leadership and several dependent variables. More specifically, subordinates who responded favorably to transformational leaders were expected to be low in independence. The dependent variables employed in the study included subordinate reactions to the leader (satisfaction with the leader, perceived effectiveness of the leader, and willingness to exert extra effort due to the leader), individual subordinate performance, and discretionary subordinate organizational citizenship behavior. Study results did not support the hypotheses at the.05 …
Analysis Of A Multidimensional Model Of Body Image Disturbance Using Structural Modeling., David Hunter Gleaves
Analysis Of A Multidimensional Model Of Body Image Disturbance Using Structural Modeling., David Hunter Gleaves
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Although there has been a wealth of recent research on the construct of body image disturbance, it is still a highly controversial and poorly understood phenomenon. Much of previous research has treated body image disturbance as if it were a unidimensional construct. Recently, a multidimensional model was proposed which incorporated the concepts of body size distortion, preference for thinness, body dissatisfaction, and fear of fatness. The purpose of the present investigation was to examine this multidimensional model in an attempt to establish its validity and resolve many of the current controversies regarding body image disturbance. The LISREL 7 program was …
A Study Of Collaborative Consultation Versus Traditional Methods Of Special Education Service Delivery., Jane Nell Guyer Luster
A Study Of Collaborative Consultation Versus Traditional Methods Of Special Education Service Delivery., Jane Nell Guyer Luster
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study examined the attitudes and perceptions of general and special educators engaged in collaborative consultation and those utilizing traditional self-contained or resource methods of special education service delivery. A difference in collaborative consultation and traditional educators was predicted on autonomy, as measured by Charters' (1974) Sense of Autonomy Scale (SAS), zone of acceptance, as measured by the Professional Zone of Acceptance Inventory (PZAI) (Kunz and Hoy, 1974), and pluralistic ignorance, as measured by the Pupil Control Ideology (PCI) form developed by Willower, Eidell, and Hoy (1967). School climate was measured using the Organizational Climate Description Question-Revised Elementary (OCDQ-RE) (Hoy …

Temporal And Spatial Characteristics Of Annual Maximum Precipitation In Louisiana., Babak Naghavi
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A new procedure to compile and enhance hourly data has been proposed. A total of 92 rain gauges were used to generate 25 synthesized stations with long periods of record. Annual maximum series for various rainfall durations from the 25 synthesized stations were used for statistical analysis. Temporal and spatial characteristics of annual maximum precipitation are investigated and a new procedure for identification of climatologically homogeneous regions is proposed. This new procedure is based on statistical parameters of precipitation data and understanding of atmospheric processes. The mean annual precipitation, recorded extreme precipitations, geographical locations, and synoptic weather patterns were used …
A Blackboard Integration Of Manufacturing Databases Using An Intelligent Interface., David Anderson Koonce
A Blackboard Integration Of Manufacturing Databases Using An Intelligent Interface., David Anderson Koonce
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The explosion of computer applications into the world of manufacturing along functional lines has produced the often mentioned "islands of automation." Although many issues and problems are involved in interfacing and integrating the databases that serve these applications, we can extract valuable data from these independent systems to provide important information to decision makers. This research resulted in the development of MIMIR (Multiple Integrated Manufacturing Information Resources), a decision support system based upon the blackboard architecture. The blackboard architecture extends the common expert system design to include multiple expert systems, termed Knowledge Sources (KS's), which combine to solve problems too …
Remagnetization Of Carbonates In The Appalachian Basin., Barbara Saffer
Remagnetization Of Carbonates In The Appalachian Basin., Barbara Saffer
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Paleomagnetic and rock magnetic data from two transects of southern and northern Appalachian Basin carbonates demonstrate different patterns of Late Paleozoic remagnetization and magnetite concentration. Samples were collected in Ordovician and Mississippian carbonates of Tennessee and Alabama and in Devonian carbonates of New York and Ontario. In the southern basin, Paleozoic carbonates of the Nashville Dome and of the fold-thrust belt near Chattanooga were remagnetized during the Late Paleozoic Kiaman period. These remagnetized carbonates contain more magnetite than do unremagnetized carbonates in the intervening basin. The unremagnetized carbonates demonstrate only a present field magnetization except for one Mississippian site in …
Melt Elongational Flow Rheometry In Converging Channels., Hwan Chul Kim
Melt Elongational Flow Rheometry In Converging Channels., Hwan Chul Kim
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The basic problem in polymer melt elongational rheometry is obtaining a stable and constant elongational flow field free from shear effects. The objective of this study is to present a technique to generate plug flow and elongational flow of polymer melts in a channel geometry. The results of the study included the development of analytical and numerical solutions for flow behavior in the coextrusion of a core polymer melt encapsulated by a sufficiently low viscous skin polymer melt for linear and converging die geometries. Studying the effects of the power-law index, viscosity ratio, and flow rate ratio on the velocity …
The Absent Father In Modern Drama., Paul Nagim Rosefeldt
The Absent Father In Modern Drama., Paul Nagim Rosefeldt
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Theories of modern drama point out the powerful sense of loss and alienation that is woven into the very fabric of modern drama. This sense of loss is connected with the death of God and the destruction of absolute value systems. This study, however, takes the theory of loss one step further, tying the absence of God in modern drama to the absence of the father. The psychoanalytical theories of Sigmund Freud, Jacques Lacan, and Carl Jung view the father as a disembodied presence standing above and outside of culture. These psychological theories of the father can be connected to …

Curriculum Needs Of Entry-Level Agribusiness Managers In Jamaica., James Durwin Mckenzie
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
For developing countries, establishing linkages between education and key productive sectors of their economies is a top priority in their agendas for higher education. This interaction is essential to ensure that job requirements are matched by the qualification of job recruits. This study used the framework of job analysis to identify the importance of job skills and personal qualities required by entry-level agribusiness managers and to determine if the curriculum of the College of Agriculture, Jamaica, was providing those skills and qualities. The Agribusiness Management Aptitude and Skill Survey (AGRI-MASS) was used to survey top and middle management personnel in …
Daily Stress And Smoking., Kathryn Leigh Nathan
Daily Stress And Smoking., Kathryn Leigh Nathan
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study examined daily minor stress and cigarette smoking in adult habitual smokers. In this study, 55 subjects monitored daily stress, daily state anxiety, and daily cigarette intake for 21 consecutive days. Subjects also completed measures of trait anxiety, self-reported smoking motives, recent major life events, and social support. These variables, along with gender, were used to predict associations between daily cigarette intake and scores on daily stress and anxiety inventories. Results of within- and between-subjects time series correlational analyses showed significant associations between scores on measures of daily stress and daily cigarette intake. While subjects as individuals showed marked …
Positionality, Structure, And Conflict In The International System., Michael Henry Murdoch
Positionality, Structure, And Conflict In The International System., Michael Henry Murdoch
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation brings a disaggregated structural approach to bear on two dependent variables--trade protectionism and interstate war. In trade, I utilize cross-sectional data on tariffs and non-tariff barriers to test the theory that states are positional actors who use protectionist measures in an attempt to acquire or defend comparative advantage in industrial sectors. States and two-digit SITC industrial sectors are positioned in the international division of labor. A model is developed that predicts how states should distribute their protection across sectors if protection is a function of state positionality, as opposed to state institutions or other non-structural variables. Although the …
Nitrogen Composition And Feeding Value Of Annual Forages As Affected By Nitrogen Fertilization And Defoliation Frequency., Youbo Zhang
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Initially, various solvents were tested for their efficacy in isolating soluble nitrogen (SN) from annual ryegrass and berseem clover. Plant nitrogen (PN) solubilities were similar in.5 M NaCl, autoclaved rumen fluid, borate phosphate buffer and Burroughs' solution. The mean PN solubilities across forages ranged from 12% for.1 M acetic acid to 45% for.2% NaOH. At 4$\sp\circ$C, 15% TCA precipitated the most soluble plant protein nitrogen (SPPN). Nitrogen (N) yield, concentrations of PN, SN, SPPN and soluble nonprotein nitrogen (SNPN) increased linearly as N fertilization (NF) increased from 0 to 335 kg N/ha. Decreasing defoliation interval (DI) from 6- to 2-wk …

Chemical Vapor Deposition To Titanium Dioxide Thin Films., Qingming Zhang
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
TiO$\sb2$ thin films have been prepared by the thermal decomposition of titanium tetra-isopropoxide (TTIP) in two low pressure chemical vapor deposition (LPCVD) reactors. The two reactors are the vertical tube hot-wall reactor and the stagnation point flow single-wafer cold-wall reactor. The effects of TTIP partial pressure, substrate temperature, gas flow rate, and reactor pressure on the growth rate of TiO$\sb2$ film were examined. Aerosol formation, wall effects, the effect of water content, and the effect of reactor geometry were also investigated. The experiments were performed in the substrate temperature range 225-400$\sp\circ$C, inlet TTIP partial pressure range $6.4\times10\sp{-4}$ $-$ 0.4 torr, …
Psychological Reactions To An Mi: A Study Of Attention And Avoidance To Cardiac Stimuli., Joseph Ila Constans
Psychological Reactions To An Mi: A Study Of Attention And Avoidance To Cardiac Stimuli., Joseph Ila Constans
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Previous research has shown that anxiety-disordered subjects attend to information directly relevant to their area of concern. In this study, it was postulated that cardiac-related stimuli would have attention capturing characteristics for individuals with no psychiatric history but who had recently experienced a myocardial infarction (MI). To study this hypothesis, MI subjects (n = 34) and matched controls (n = 31) participated in an attentional search task. MI subjects showed slower reaction times (RT) for both cardiac and socially threatening distractors compared to RT when neutral distractors were present. For both MI and control subjects distress level was associated with …
Mass Belief Systems Reconsidered: Myths And Political Thought., Bryan Douglas Vincent
Mass Belief Systems Reconsidered: Myths And Political Thought., Bryan Douglas Vincent
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation is a response to Bennett's (1977) call for a theoretical framework capable of integrating existing theories of mass belief systems. The theory offered here is built on two important discoveries in this body of research: the importance of simplifying heuristics and the hierarchical structure of belief systems. Recognizing that heuristics are described in a narrative form, the general importance of narrative for political cognition is suggested and explored. Of particular importance is the possibility that hierarchical belief systems are grounded in core narratives or myths. After demonstrating the theoretical links between myth and belief system, a way of …
Visual Transformations In Symbolic Elementary Algebra., Thomas Harold Awtry
Visual Transformations In Symbolic Elementary Algebra., Thomas Harold Awtry
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Competence in algebra requires knowledge of parsing and transformations. The parsing component specifies the structure of algebraic expressions based on conventional operation hierarchies. The transformational component specifies the real number properties used to transform algebraic expressions into equivalent forms. In standard models of mathematical cognition, both components are conceived as strictly propositional domains (e.g., Anderson, 1983a). Kirshner (1989b) demonstrated that parsing knowledge initially is apprehended in a visual (non-propositional) modality. This dissertation extends that visual analysis beyond parsing to the transformational component. It is proposed that transformations range on a continuum from highly propositional (e.g., x(y$\sp{-1}) = ({\rm x \over …
The Relationship Of Conversational Sensitivity And Employment Interview Experience To Deception Detection In Employment Interviews., Karen Anding Fontenot
The Relationship Of Conversational Sensitivity And Employment Interview Experience To Deception Detection In Employment Interviews., Karen Anding Fontenot
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between conversational sensitivity and employment interview experience to deception detection in employment interviews. Controversial sensitivity refers to one's ability to detect and decode the verbal, paralinguistic, and nonverbal cues that occur in conversations. Two research questions were asked: (1) Is conversational sensitivity related to deception detection in employment interviews? (2) Is employment interview experience related to deception detection in employment interviews? A sample of 230 subjects (150 students and 80 professionals) participated in the study, which had two phases. In phase one, subjects completed the Conversational Sensitivity Scale, a 36-item, …
The Genetic Effects Of Forest Fragmentation On Amazonian Forest Birds., John Marshall Bates
The Genetic Effects Of Forest Fragmentation On Amazonian Forest Birds., John Marshall Bates
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
I present allozyme and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) data on the genetic structure of five species of Amazonian forest birds at two geographic scales. The five species, Glyphorynchus spirurus (family Dendrocolaptidae), Leptopogon amaurocephalus (Tyrannidae), Hypocnemis cantator, Myrmeciza hemimelaena, and Hylophylax poecilinota (all three Formicariidae), are common forest understory inhabitants throughout much of Amazonia. At the local geographic scale, I hypothesized that forest fragmentation affected genetic structure in these species. Study sites were in the Department of Santa Cruz, Bolivia. Six sites separated by 150 km or less for each species were sampled: three sites in continuous Amazonian forest, and three in …
Mimesis And Poiesis In The Novel: William Faulkner's "Go Down, Moses" And The Mythopoeic Turn In The American Imagination., Paul Richard Connell
Mimesis And Poiesis In The Novel: William Faulkner's "Go Down, Moses" And The Mythopoeic Turn In The American Imagination., Paul Richard Connell
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
In the course of its development as a genre, the novel shifted in the mid-twentieth century from a mimetic model grounded in imitation and colored with pessimism, to a poietic one based on discovery and novelty and foregrounded in hope. Precipitated by a crisis in representation after Joyce, the novel found in its own history, through the recuperation of older literary forms, new possibilities of representation, and shifted away from assumptions based on fact and history, to one grounded in miracle and myth. This shift was anticipated by the theories of the German Romantics Schlegel and Novalis and is adumbrated …
Structural Analysis And Methionine Ehancement Of The Bean Seed Storage Protein Phaseolin., John M. Dyer
Structural Analysis And Methionine Ehancement Of The Bean Seed Storage Protein Phaseolin., John M. Dyer
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Common beans are widely utilized as a food source, yet are limited as a complete source of protein due to low levels of methionine, an essential amino acid for humans. A protein engineering strategy was developed to increase the methionine content of phaseolin, the primary seed storage protein in common beans. The engineering strategy consists of three major parts. In the first part, a set of biophysical probes was developed to characterize the stability of wild-type and modified phaseolin proteins. I used absorbance, fluorescence emission, circular dichroism, and fluorescence polarization anisotropy to monitor phaseolin denaturation induced by urea, guanidinium chloride, …
An Algorithm For Supervisory Multivariable Constrained Optimization Of Industrial Processes., William E. Daniel Jr
An Algorithm For Supervisory Multivariable Constrained Optimization Of Industrial Processes., William E. Daniel Jr
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
An algorithm is presented for supervisory optimization of industrial processes that combines the minimization of operating costs with process operating constraints. The supervisory algorithm manipulates the set points of a lower-level control system and the set points are updated at long enough intervals of time so that the process reaches steady state between set point updates. This steady state assumption greatly simplifies the algorithm computations and, more importantly, significantly reduces the effort required for process identification. This dissertation develops the algorithm and then presents results from its application to a simulated distillation train and reactor feed network. In both applications, …
The Distribution Of Toxic Sources In Louisiana: An Analysis Of Community Socioeconomic Characteristics And Industry Behavior., Salpie Sarkis Djoundourian
The Distribution Of Toxic Sources In Louisiana: An Analysis Of Community Socioeconomic Characteristics And Industry Behavior., Salpie Sarkis Djoundourian
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The distribution patterns of toxic sources in Louisiana reveal that some communities may be disproportionately exposed to potential environmental risks. This dissertation examines whether the location and environmental control behavior of toxic polluters are systematically related to the socioeconomic and racial characteristics of communities. The study identifies who lives in the immediate proximity of toxic sources and determines whether the characteristics of these communities are different from those of Louisiana's general population. The results reveal that income levels in communities that host toxic sources are consistently and significantly lower than the state averages. A distance gradient analysis indicates that as …
