Truncated Icosahedral Gravitational Wave Antenna, Warren W. Johnson, Stephen M. Merkowitz
Truncated Icosahedral Gravitational Wave Antenna, Warren W. Johnson, Stephen M. Merkowitz
Faculty Publications
We propose a new type of resonant-mass gravitational wave detector, a truncated icosahedral gravitational wave antenna. It will be omnidirectional, and able to measure the direction and polarization of a detected wave. We solve a model for this system, calculate the strain noise spectrum, and conclude that its angle-averaged energy sensitivity will be 56 times better than the equivalent bar-type antenna with the same noise temperature. © 1993 The American Physical Society.

A radiochemical 71Ga-71Ge experiment to determine the primary flux of neutrinos from the Sun began measurements of the solar neutrino flux at the Baksan Neutrino Observatory in 1990. The number of 71Ge atoms extracted from 30 tons of gallium in 1990 and 57 tons in 1991 was measured in twelve runs during the period of January 1990 to December 1991. For the 1990 data, we observed the capture rate to be 20 + 15 -20 (stat) ± 32 (syst) SNU, resulting in a limit of less than 79 SNU (90% CL). This is to be compared with 132 SNU predicted …

We have discovered that R143 in the Large Magellanic Cloud is a luminous blue variable (LBV), the first and perhaps the lone LBV in the central cluster of 30 Doradus, and only the sixth known LMC LBV. Photometric and spectroscopic observations over the past 40 yr indicate that during that time R143 moved redward (changing from an F5 to F8 supergiant), then blueward (possibly becoming as early as O9.5), and is now moving back to the red (currently appearing as a late B supergiant). Similarly, the V magnitude of the star has changed by at least 1.4 mag. Images of …

London Relation And Fluxoid Quantization For Monopole Currents In U(1) Lattice Gauge Theory, Vandana Singh, Richard W. Haymaker, Dana A. Browne
Faculty Publications
We explore the mechanism of quark confinement in four-dimensional U(1) lattice gauge theory by measuring the color-magnetic current distribution from Dirac magnetic monopoles in the presence of a static quark-antiquark pair. Our results give the first direct evidence that the quarks induce a solenoidal current distribution that screens the color-electric flux of the quarks in an electric analogue of the Meissner effect in a superconductor. We show that the vacuum state of U(1) lattice gauge theory obeys both a dual version of the London equation and an electric fluxoid quantization condition. © 1993 The American Physical Society.

SLP1 is a 17.2-kbp genetic element indigenous to the Streptomyces coelicolor chromosome. During conjugation, SLP1 can undergo excision and subsequent site-specific integration into the chromosomes of recipient cells. We report here the localization, nucleotide sequences, and initial characterization of the genes mediating these recombination events. A region of SLP1 adjacent to the previously identified site of integration, attP, was found to be sufficient to promote site-specific integration of an unrelated Streptomyces plasmid. Nucleotide sequence analysis of a 2.2-kb segment of this region reveals two open reading frames that are adjacent to and transcribed toward the attP site. One of these, …

Caregiver Stress And Well-Being As A Function Of Multiple Roles., Gwendolyn Miller Moore
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Predictors of caregiver psychological well-being, including depression, marital satisfaction, positive affect and negative affect were examined as a function of primary and secondary stress. Measures assessing these outcomes as well as role overload, inter-role conflict and care receiver impairment were administered to 77 female caregivers of dementia patients. A comparison group of 80 females was also included. Results demonstrated that noncaregivers experienced significantly higher positive affect than caregivers. In addition, differential mediating relationships were found between primary and secondary stressors contingent upon the type of outcome examined. More specifically, inter-role conflict mediated the relationship between work overload and both positive …

A Criterion Validity Study Of The Schizophrenia Subscale Of The Pimra., Naomi Arffa Swiezy
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Sixty-five mildly to moderately mentally retarded adult patients from institutional and community placements in Louisiana and Texas and with a diagnosis of schizophrenia, depression, or no psychopathology were recruited. The primary goal of the study was to establish the validity of the schizophrenia subscale of the PIMRA for diagnosing schizophrenia among mentally retarded individuals. The same methods utilized to determine the validity of the schizophrenia subscale were also used to replicate the validation of the depression subscale of the PIMRA. In addition, the extent to which other PIMRA subscale scores aid in diagnosis was investigated. Assessment measures included the informant …

We report the first infrared and optical measurements of the absolute conductivity of FeSi. Above 200 K the ac conductivity of FeSi resembles that of a dirty metal, while at low temperature most of the conductivity below 60 meV is depleted, consistent with an energy gap of that magnitude. Thus in contrast to what is expected from a picture based on simple thermal activation, the gap disappears at a temperature which is low relative to its size. Moreover, the spectral weight lost below the gap does not reappear just above the gap, but is instead distributed over an energy range …
How The Jones Polynomial Gives Rise To Physical States Of Quantum General Relativity, Bernd Brügmann, Rodolfo Gambini, Jorge Pullin
How The Jones Polynomial Gives Rise To Physical States Of Quantum General Relativity, Bernd Brügmann, Rodolfo Gambini, Jorge Pullin
Faculty Publications
Solutions to both the diffeomorphism and the hamiltonian constraint of quantum gravity have been found in the loop representation, which is based on Ashtekar's new variables. While the diffeomorphism constraint is easily solved by considering loop functionals which are knot invariants, there remains the puzzle why several of the known knot invariants are also solutions to the hamiltonian constraint. We show how the Jones polynomial gives rise to an infinite set of solutions to all the constraints of quantum gravity thereby illuminating the structure of the space of solutions and suggesting the existance of a deep connection between quantum gravity …

Bianchi Cosmologies: New Variables And A Hidden Supersymmetry, Octavio Obregón, Jorge Pullin, Michael P. Ryan
Faculty Publications
We find a supersymmetrization of the Bianchi type-IX cosmology in terms of Ashtekar's new variables. This provides a framework for connecting the recent results of Graham and those of Ryan and Moncrief for quantum states of this model. These states are also related to the states obtained particularizing supergravity for a minisuperspace. Implications for the general theory are also briefly discussed. © 1993 The American Physical Society.

Escape Of Gravitational Radiation From The Field Of Massive Bodies, Richard H. Price, Jorge Pullin, Prasun K. Kundu
Faculty Publications
We consider a compact source of gravitational waves of frequency, in or near a massive spherically symmetric distribution of matter or a black hole. Recent calculations have led to apparently contradictory results for the influence of the massive body on the propagation of the waves. We show here that the results are in fact consistent and in agreement with the standard viewpoint in which the high-frequency compact source produces the radiation as if in a flat background, and the background curvature affects the propagation of these waves. © 1993 The American Physical Society.

Quantum Einstein-Maxwell Fields: A Unified Viewpoint From The Loop Representation, Rodolfo Gambini, Jorge Pullin
Faculty Publications
We propose a naive unification of electromagnetism and general relativity based on enlarging the gauge group of Ashtekar's new variables. We construct the connection and loop representations and analyze the space of states. In the loop representation, the wave functions depend on two loops, each of them carrying information about both gravitation and electromagnetism. We find that the Chern-Simons form and the Jones polynomial play a role in the model. © 1993 The American Physical Society.
Reliability And Validity Of The Teen Substance Abuse Rating Scale., Brett Elliott Hemstreet
Reliability And Validity Of The Teen Substance Abuse Rating Scale., Brett Elliott Hemstreet
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study used 57 adolescent substance abusers receiving treatment and 510 adolescent controls in a validation of the Teen Substance Abuse Rating Scale (TSARS; Hemstreet, 1991). The TSARS was originally designed as a relatively brief, easy to read self-report questionnaire to discriminate between adolescent substance abusers and nonabusers. The 92 items of the TSARS represent specific behaviors that are answered in a Yes/No format. The TSARS was examined to determine if it would meet validity criteria presented by Winters (1990) and Swadi (1990), as well as those presented in the Standards for Educational and Psychological Testing (APA, 1985). A principal …

Computer Training: The Role Of Computer Attitudes And Behavior Modeling In The Acquisition Of Declarative And Procedural Knowledge., Drew Benjamin Brock
Computer Training: The Role Of Computer Attitudes And Behavior Modeling In The Acquisition Of Declarative And Procedural Knowledge., Drew Benjamin Brock
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This research examined technology training (using computers as a specific instance of technology) in a framework that integrated concepts drawn from cognitive and social learning theory. Borrowing from cognitive learning theory, two types of knowledge were assessed: declarative knowledge (knowing what) and procedural knowledge (knowing how). Behavior modeling training, drawn from social learning theory, was used as the primary training methodology. It was proposed that the factors contributing to learning as a function of behavior modeling are the same factors that lead to procedural knowledge acquisition. I also examined the effects of two major attitudes toward computers in predicting computer …

In Vitro Studies On The Interactions Between Toxoplasma Gondii And Its Host Cell., Sandra Karen Halonen
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Toxoplasma gondii is an obligate intracellular protozoan parasite of the Phylum Apicomplexa. The parasite resides in the cytoplasm of its host cells in a membrane bound compartment called the parasitophorous vacuole. All growth and development of the parasite occur within this compartment. In this thesis, the interactions between the Vero cells, a fibroblast-like cell line, and the parasite which occur during the intracellular growth of the parasite were addressed. The impact of infection on the host cell intermediate filaments and microtubular cytoskeletal elements was examined by immunofluorescence microscopy. Host cell intermediate filaments were found to overcoat the parasite vacuole beginning …

Hydrologic Modelling With A Spatial Database., Richard Gilbert Greene
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Hydrologic modelling can be enhanced and improved through the utilization of a Geographic Information System (GIS). Information can be stored and analyzed by the tools available within a GIS to create a spatial database that realistically represents a watershed for hydrologic modelling. This study presents an approach whereby the data available in the GIS determine the modelling strategy. The soil, topography and land cover data for the watershed were analyzed with the spatial analysis tools of a GIS to determine the hydrologic response areas. The coordinate values that define the locations and boundaries of features in the GIS were used …

A Note On Intertwines Of Infinite Graphs, Bogdan Oporowski
Faculty Publications
We present a construction of two infinite graphs G1, G2 and of an infinite set F of graphs such that F is an antichain with respect to the minor relation and, for every graph G in F, both G1 and G2 are subgraphs of G but no graph obtained from G by deletion or contraction of an edge has both G1 and G2 as minors. These graphs show that the extension to infinite graphs of the intertwining conjecture of Lovász, Milgram, and Ungar fails. © 1993 Academic Press, Inc.
In Situ Determination Of Capillary Pressure And Relative Permeability Curves Using Well Logs., Adel Afifi Ibrahim
In Situ Determination Of Capillary Pressure And Relative Permeability Curves Using Well Logs., Adel Afifi Ibrahim
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A pressure profile obtained from the formation tester defines the wettability, free water level, and hydrocarbon and water densities as well as the capillary pressure above the free water level. Correlating the pressure values to the water saturation values determined from the resistivity logs results in a capillary pressure/water saturation, $\rm P\sb{c}(S\sb{w}),$ curve characteristic of the reservoir. A relative permeability curve then can then be derived from this $\rm P\sb{c}(S\sb{w})$ curve using empirical relationships. This approach was tested in the laboratory using an eight-foot vertical sandstone core to simulate the formation. The core was fitted with electrode arrays, and resistivity …

Calibration Chamber Studies Of Miniature Piezocone Penetration Tests In Cohesive Soil Specimens., Pradeep Unnikrishnan Kurup
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The electronic piezocone penetrometer is potentially a very powerful in-situ testing device used for soil profiling and in the determination of engineering soil properties. The focus of this research is on the laboratory calibration of a miniature piezocone penetrometer in cohesive soil specimens instrumented to monitor the spatial pore pressure distribution. Two automated slurry consolidometers were developed for this research that were successful in preparing homogeneous and reproducible cohesive soil specimens. The results of eight miniature piezocone penetration tests (PCPT) and three miniature quasi-static friction cone penetration tests (QCPT) performed in a flexible double wall calibration chamber system are presented. …

Geologic And Physical Processes At A Gulf Of Mexico Tidal Inlet, East Pass, Florida., Andrew Morang
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
East Pass, a tidal inlet located in the Florida Panhandle between Pensacola and Panama City, connects Choctawhatchee Bay to the Gulf of Mexico. A three-phase model has been developed which describes the behavior of East Pass inlet during the last 120 years, based on wave, current, tide, bathymetric and shoreline data, and on historical records. The first phase (pre-1928) is of spit development and breaching. This phase covers the period when the pass was oriented in a northwest-southeast direction between Choctawhatchee Bay and the Gulf. From 1928 to 1968, the second phase was characterized by a stable throat position but …

The Interrelationships Of Rotylenchulus Reniformis Linford And Oliveira With Rhizoctonia Solani Kuhn On Cotton., Ambalavanan Sankaralingam
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The interrelationships between the reniform nematode, Rotylenchulus reniformis Linford and Oliveira, and the fungus Rhizoctonia solani Kuhn were studied on cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.). Parasitism of cotton seedlings by R. solani resulted in enhanced reproduction of R. reniformis. In the presence of the fungus, there was increased egg production by the nematode which resulted in augmented soil population density. Enhanced reproduction of the nematode in the presence of the fungus was consistent across isolates of R. solani, populations and inoculum levels of R. reniformis, and cotton cultivars. The nematode did not influence the severity of seedling blight disease. At 90 …

Interconnection Networks Embeddings And Efficient Parallel Computations., Emadeddin Mohamed Abuelrub
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
To obtain a greater performance, many processors are allowed to cooperate to solve a single problem. These processors communicate via an interconnection network or a bus. The most essential function of the underlying interconnection network is the efficient interchanging of messages between processes in different processors. Parallel machines based on the hypercube topology have gained a great respect in parallel computation because of its many attractive properties. Many versions of the hypercube have been introduced by many researchers mainly to enhance communications. The twisted hypercube is one of the most attractive versions of the hypercube. It preserves the important features …
