Agricultural Terracing In The Fiji Islands. (Volumes I And Ii)., Robert Thomas Kuhlken Jan 1994

Agricultural Terracing In The Fiji Islands. (Volumes I And Ii)., Robert Thomas Kuhlken

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Agricultural terraces form a distinctive element in the cultural landscape of Fiji. These skillfully fashioned earthworks were developed for the irrigated cultivation of one specific cultigen--taro (Colocasia esculenta), a long domesticated edible aroid. Constructing pondfields on slopes represents an intensification of production, with taro yields responding favorably to higher levels of labor input. In Fiji, irrigated terraces on the leeward side of larger islands also served to overcome seasonal conditions of drought or soil moisture deficits. Nearly all of these intensive agrosystems have been abandoned. But the carefully sculpted hillsides endure, and serve as poignant reminders of past travail. Taro …

The Evolution Of Dividend Policy In The Corporation And In Academic Theory., Bob G. Wood Jr Jan 1994

The Evolution Of Dividend Policy In The Corporation And In Academic Theory., Bob G. Wood Jr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

"The harder we look at the dividend picture, the more it seems like a puzzle with pieces that just don't fit together" (Black, 1976). The purpose of this study is to examine the dividend phenomenon. The first essay of the dissertation investigates the origins, modifications and adaptations of corporate dividend payments to shareholders. Contemporary theoretical modeling to date has neglected to acknowledge the potential influence of dividend payment tradition in the formulation of dividend policy. The second essay examines the evolution of the theoretical attempts to explain dividend policy and empirical tests of these theories. The dividend paradigms are divided …

Industrial Buyer-Seller Alliances: An Interorganizational Strategic Perspective., Charles Chris Nielson Jan 1994

Industrial Buyer-Seller Alliances: An Interorganizational Strategic Perspective., Charles Chris Nielson

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Industrial suppliers often seek close relationships with selected customers in order to obtain certain strategic advantages. These advantages include not only those accruing directly from the preferred position with that particular customer (e.g., an assured outlet for the firm's products), but also those related to the attainment of mutual buyer-seller benefits including, as examples, new product development, new market entry, reduced distribution and shipping costs, and others. These advantages are obtained by the creation of close formal and informal ties or bonds between the firms using joint product development projects, R&D projects, Just-in-Time logistics systems and others. These types of …

The Design, Synthesis And Structure-Function Studies Of Highly Repetitive Amphiphilic Antibacterial Peptides And The Synthesis Of Benz(F)Indene For The Preparation Of Novel Metallocenes., Calvin Lawrence Becker Jan 1994

The Design, Synthesis And Structure-Function Studies Of Highly Repetitive Amphiphilic Antibacterial Peptides And The Synthesis Of Benz(F)Indene For The Preparation Of Novel Metallocenes., Calvin Lawrence Becker

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Several different peptides exhibit antimicrobial activity based upon an amphiphilic $\alpha$-helical secondary structure. Antimicrobial action occurs because these peptides compromise the integrity of the cell membrane and ultimately cause cell lysis. It is believed that ion-channel formation is the mechanism by which this lysis occurs. The goal of this research has been to conduct structure-function studies of synthetic peptides to aid in the determination of the mode of action of lytic peptides. Several peptides based upon a minimalist approach have been synthesized. Amphiphilicity and $\alpha$-helicity were the desired structural features. With these as the necessary structural motifs we set out …

The Rhetoric Of The Organizational Saga: A Fantasy Theme Analysis Of The Organizational Communication Culture Of The Louisiana State Police., Brookie Ann Allphin Jan 1994

The Rhetoric Of The Organizational Saga: A Fantasy Theme Analysis Of The Organizational Communication Culture Of The Louisiana State Police., Brookie Ann Allphin

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation is a fantasy theme analysis of the organizational communication culture of the Louisiana State Police. This study interprets the rhetorical function of the organizational sagas of State Police. State Police has a distinct history aligned with Louisiana Politics. In 1937, General Louis F. Guerre, the first superintendent, envisioned a new State Police, immune from political pressures, "soldiers of the law in the first line of defense for society." The symbolic persona of LSP has survived through fifty-six years of politics and policing as the state's ranking law enforcement agency. As participant observer, the researcher gathered communication data and …

Factors Affecting Asulam Activity On Sugarcane (Saccharum Sp.) Cultivars And Johnsongrass (Sorghum Halepense)., Stacey Alan Bruff

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Studies were conducted to evaluate several factors that may account for the variability in johnsongrass (Sorghum halepense (L.) Pers.) control and sugarcane (Saccharum sp.) cultivar sensitivity observed with postemergence application of asulam, methyl ((4-aminophenyl)sulfonyl) carbamate, herbicide. Johnsongrass at boot stage to 70% seedhead emergence was exposed to simulated rainfall (1.3 cm of water in 15 min) 0, 3, 6, 12, 24, and 48 h after application of asulam at 3.7 kg/ha. Predicted critical rainfree period at which greatest johnsongrass control (65 to 80%) was obtained ranged from 8 to 20 h after treatment, dependent on johnsongrass growth stage and environmental …

Second Order Neural Networks., Sanjoy Das Jan 1994

Second Order Neural Networks., Sanjoy Das

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In this dissertation, a feedback neural network model has been proposed. This network uses a second order method of convergence based on the Newton-Raphson method. This neural network has both discrete as well as continuous versions. When used as an associative memory, the proposed model has been called the polynomial neural network (PNN). The memories of this network can be located anywhere in an n dimensional space rather than being confined to the corners of the latter. A method for storing memories has been proposed. This is a single step method unlike the currently known computationally intensive iterative methods. An …

Convention Unity Speeches., Lynna L. Cherry Jan 1994

Convention Unity Speeches., Lynna L. Cherry

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

National nominating conventions serve a number of purposes for their respective parties. Most notably, the convention officially bestows the party nomination on the candidate for president. Recent political conventions have been carefully orchestrated to create an air of party unity and solidarity behind the respective candidate. Beginning with the 1980 Democratic National Convention, there has been a new occurrence at these conventions. Contenders who were not going to receive the party nomination nor were they going to be the running mate for the party nominee have been granted podium time (usually during prime time of the convention) ostensibly for the …

Fluorescence Studies Of Tomaymycin-Dna Adducts: Structure And Dynamics., Qi Chen Jan 1994

Fluorescence Studies Of Tomaymycin-Dna Adducts: Structure And Dynamics., Qi Chen

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The relationship between ground-state structure and fluorescence lifetime of tomaymycin was studied using steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence, absorption, NMR, and photochemical techniques. Excited-state proton transfer and intersystem crossing were identified as the major nonradiative processes. Solvent isotope effect was found in aqueous solution, which did not involved C8OH. Photochemical H-D exchange on aromatic C6H and C9H were observed with similar rate. At 77 K, the total luminescence quantum yield was determined as 0.99. The quantum yield ratio of phosphorescence to fluorescence was 1.2. The limiting anisotropy was ${\sim}0.34$ for fluorescence and $-$0.1 for phosphorescence. The number and type of tomaymycin-DNA …

Twentieth-Century Flemish Art Song: A Compendium For Singers. (Volumes I And Ii)., Paul Arthur Huybrechts Jan 1994

Twentieth-Century Flemish Art Song: A Compendium For Singers. (Volumes I And Ii)., Paul Arthur Huybrechts

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Although much has been written concerning the vocal music of the great Flemish composers of the Renaissance, very little information is available about the Flemish composers of art song since the establishment of the Kingdom of Belgium in 1830. This unique country is half French-speaking and half Flemish-speaking. With this division has come a constant battle of language and culture. Initially, the composers of art song set French texts. Flemish composers, however, wanted to establish a truly Flemish music. They began to unite the people of Flanders through songs setting Flemish texts, eventually helping to raise the Flemish language and …

The Relationships Of Adaptive Selling Behaviors And Customer-Oriented Selling With Need For Cognition In The Personal Selling Context., Kim Graham Johnson Jan 1994

The Relationships Of Adaptive Selling Behaviors And Customer-Oriented Selling With Need For Cognition In The Personal Selling Context., Kim Graham Johnson

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study examined the influences of two selling strategies-- adaptive selling behaviors and customer-oriented selling behaviors--within the interactive dyad of personal selling in the life insurance setting. These influences include the effects of the selling strategies on attitudes toward the product, attitudes toward the salesperson, and ultimate purchase intentions and recommendations. Each of the strategies is assessed from the customer's vantage point. Also need for cognition of the customer is considered as an individual difference variable impacting the sales process. Results indicate that customers' perceptions of a salesperson's selling behavior does affect purchase decisions. Implications for both researchers and practitioners …

The Impact Of Contextual Variables On The Propensity Of Individual Employees To Withhold Effort: A Multi-Organization Analysis., Roland E. Kidwell Jr Jan 1994

The Impact Of Contextual Variables On The Propensity Of Individual Employees To Withhold Effort: A Multi-Organization Analysis., Roland E. Kidwell Jr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation synthesizes theory and research in economics, social psychology, sociology and management to present and test a model of employee propensity to withhold effort (PWE) in work groups in 10 organizations. The dissertation extends to work organizations Knoke's (1990) synthesized motivation model, which suggests that rational, normative conformity and affective bonding incentives act together to predict whether people will contribute to collective activities. A study of 570 private-sector employees found that when employees perceived high degrees of task visibility, group effort norms, equity and altruism, they would be less likely to withhold effort in job-related tasks. As predicted, payment …

The Legacy Of America's "Forgotten Warriors:" An Analysis Of Dysfunctional Relational Communication Among Vietnam Combat Veterans Exhibiting Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Symptomatology., Jack Eugene Rogers Jan 1994

The Legacy Of America's "Forgotten Warriors:" An Analysis Of Dysfunctional Relational Communication Among Vietnam Combat Veterans Exhibiting Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Symptomatology., Jack Eugene Rogers

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The literature has long reported the atypical stress-producing characteristics of the Vietnam conflict. For veterans still suffering from the psychological and emotional "fall-out" of war-related anxiety, one long-term adjustment dysfunction is the difficulty PTSD-positive veterans experience in sustaining successful interpersonal relationships. Competent dyadic communication plays a critical role in engendering positive relational trajectories. This study investigated the hypothesis that posttraumatic stress disorder would exhibit a correlational relationship with the relational communication topoi of intimacy and dominance/control. A cross-regional sample of 218 PTSD-positive veterans and their relational partners provided data. Scale construction and validation was achieved through orthogonal factor analysis with …

Enhancing Discourse Fluency By Increasing Work Selection Proficiency In School-Age Children With Language Learning Disorders., Lillian Nielsen Stiegler

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

There is growing clinical and research interest in the area of children's "word finding" difficulties, but treatment efficacy data are sparse. Previous treatments have been concerned with training students with language-learning disorders (LLD) to retrieve pre-selected, concrete nouns. Recommended intervention strategies have included retrieval exercises and activities focused on improving students' elaborative knowledge of training exemplars. The current study presents and evaluates a discourse-based, contextual intervention strategy for increasing word selection proficiency and discourse fluency. Three nine year old boys with diagnosed language-learning disorders participated in three discourse tasks: picture-elicited narratives, story-retelling, and conversation. During treatment, the experimenter identified problematic …

The course of Mowatt's self-fashioning was not smooth. She did not choose …

"A Proper Little Lady" And Other Twisted Tales Of Adolescent Femininity., Natalie Guice Adams Jan 1994

"A Proper Little Lady" And Other Twisted Tales Of Adolescent Femininity., Natalie Guice Adams

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this ethnographic study is to explore the stories told by four adolescent females about how they construct a gendered identity amidst the conflicting and contradictory expectations of them as adolescents and as females. After situating the study within a feminist poststructuralist framework, the dominant cultural scripts that have dictated what constitutes normative adolescent and feminine behavior are examined. Of particular importance to this study is the way in which these dominant discourses of femininity and adolescence are manifested in the middle school that the participants attend, especially in the school's attempt to mold its female students into …

Factors Affecting Sediment Transport, Deposition And Erosion In Intertidal Wetlands In Louisiana., Roelof Maria Boumans Jan 1994

Factors Affecting Sediment Transport, Deposition And Erosion In Intertidal Wetlands In Louisiana., Roelof Maria Boumans

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Processes leading to land loss in Louisiana are defined, measured and analyzed with special emphasis on the deposited and suspended sediment budgets. The findings were used to assess coastal management in Louisiana. In a spatial model of long term habitat succession, the degradation of a Louisiana wetland was based upon simulated exchanges of sediments across irregularly shaped polygons. Habitat distribution within a cell was estimated by elevation. The model findings were confirmed when the impact of two Louisiana marsh management plans caused reduced short-term sedimentation due to impaired water and materials flux. The sedimentation-erosion table (SET) is described and applied …

Self-Diffusion Of Semiflexible Rod-Like Poly-Gamma-Benzyl-Alpha, L-Glutamate In Dilute And Nondilute Isotropic Solutions., Zimei Bu

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The self-diffusion coefficient (D$\sb{\rm s}$) of fluorescent dye labeled poly-$\gamma$-benzyl-L-glutamates (LPBLG) in pyridine solutions was measured by fluorescence photobleaching recovery (FPR). Intrinsic viscosity and static light scattering measurements showed that the LPBLGs did not aggregate in pyridine and that the rod structure of LPBLG was not perturbed by labeling. The measured concentrations spanned from dilute to the most concentrated isotropic solutions, and the axial ratios from 7 to 80 (M$\sb{\rm W}$ ranged from 20 000 to 232 000). The objective of this FPR study was to focus directly on the translational diffusion of a single LPBLG molecule in the absence …

Application Of Optimum Solutions Of A Diffusion Model To Evaluate The Effects Of Extractives In Wood Drying., Yong Chen Jan 1994

Application Of Optimum Solutions Of A Diffusion Model To Evaluate The Effects Of Extractives In Wood Drying., Yong Chen

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study evaluates the influence of extractives on moisture diffusivity, and thereby the drying behavior of wood. Extractives are minor chemical components of wood, and their effect on moisture diffusion is sensitive to experimental and calculation errors. A series of studies designed to accurately determine the proper solutions of a diffusion model was done; then studies to determine the effect of extractives in a wood drying system were undertaken. The drying curves derived from the optimum diffusion coefficients gave better prediction of experimental drying data than those derived from traditional approximate methods; therefore, optimum methods were applied in the study …
