A Comparative Study Of The Oral Language Of Students In Basal-Based And Whole Language Kindergartens., Joan H. Lucille Benedict
A Comparative Study Of The Oral Language Of Students In Basal-Based And Whole Language Kindergartens., Joan H. Lucille Benedict
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Concern has existed for several years over the classroom practices relating to the "whole language" approach as opposed to the "basal-based" approach relative to literacy development, especially with respect to the appropriateness of each method for use with minority and lower socioeconomic groups of children entering kindergarten. This study describes the oral language of both African American and European American kindergarten children from low and middle socioeconomic status families who are attending public school kindergartens, one using whole language and one a basal-based approach. The language during centertime of seventeen children from these two classrooms was audiotaped using wireless microphones …

Tolerance Potential And Defense Mechanisms Of Honey Bees (Apis Mellifera L.) To Varroa Jacobsoni Oud. (Acari: Varroidae) And Acarapis Species (Acari: Tarsonemidae)., Lilia Ibay De Guzman
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Comparative resistance or tolerance of four stocks of Apis mellifera L. to Varroa jacobsoni Oudemans, Acarapis dorsalis Morgenthaler, Acarapis externus Morgenthaler and Acarapis woodi (Rennie), was investigated using choice (bioassay) and field experiments. A. m. carnica from Yugoslavia (ARS-Y-C-1), A. m. carnica from Canada (Hastings), F$\sb1$ hybrid between ARS-Y-C-1 and Hastings and a general Louisiana stock were evaluated. A tolerance index showed that Hastings, ARS-Y-C-1 and F$\sb1$ hybrid exhibited some degree of tolerance to V. jacobsoni. These stocks lived longer with higher levels of Varroa infestation in worker pupae and on adult honey bees. Louisiana stock was more susceptible to …
Nitric Oxide Toxicity Mediated By Peroxynitrite., Xia Jin
Nitric Oxide Toxicity Mediated By Peroxynitrite., Xia Jin
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The reaction of nitric oxide (NO) with superoxide forms peroxynitrite, an extremely potent oxidant. Peroxynitrite can be synthesized by the ozonation of the azide ion. This preparation of peroxynitrite is essentially free of hydrogen peroxide and does not contain excess alkali. Peroxynitrites synthesized by independent methods contain very different impurities, but give the same results toward the oxidation of methionine (Met), dimethylsulfoxide, and the nitration of phenols. The oxidations of Met and its analog, 2-keto-4-thiomethylbutanoic acid (KTBA), by peroxynitrite proceed by two competing mechanisms. The first is a non-radical, bimolecular reaction yielding methionine sulfoxide (MetS=O). In the second mechanism, methionine …
Demographic And Genetic Studies Of Seed Dispersal And Juvenile Survival In An Old-Growth Longleaf Pine Population., Susan Langevin Grace
Demographic And Genetic Studies Of Seed Dispersal And Juvenile Survival In An Old-Growth Longleaf Pine Population., Susan Langevin Grace
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Many biotic and abiotic factors contribute to the formation of aggregations of seedlings and juveniles in populations of forest trees. The following studies investigate factors influencing the spatial structure of juveniles in an old-growth longleaf pine (Pinus palustris Mill.) population. In the first study, effects of adult tree density, pine needle litter and fire temperature were related to the demography of juveniles. A cohort of juveniles from a mast year in 1987 was followed over four years. Demographic components were determined both before and up to two years after fire. Juveniles were more dense, larger and had higher survival in …

The purpose of this study was to examine performance trends of advanced wind instrumentalists with regard to intervallic tuning. Factors of interest were tuning system, location (above or below a referential stimulus), interval type, and group (student or professional). Also of interest was the direction of deviation of the target pitches, sharp or flat, from equal temperament. Subjects (N = 16) were experienced wind instrumentalists, eight experienced professionals, and eight advanced university students. Subjects were recorded performing a two-part reduction of a Bach chorale, first playing the melody with a synthesized harmony line, then vice versa. Performances were transferred to …
Information Content And Market Microstructure Effects Of Analysts' Recommendations., Sok Tae Kim
Information Content And Market Microstructure Effects Of Analysts' Recommendations., Sok Tae Kim
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation examines the information content and market microstructure effects of analysts' initial coverage. The first essay centers on the valuation effect of analysts' initial coverages and discusses the roles of trading volume and firm size in the revaluation process. First, a large average abnormal return (7.46%) is observed on the day the initial coverages are released via the Dow Jones News Wire. The average abnormal return of initial coverages is significantly larger than the average abnormal returns of analysts' upgrade recommendations, implying marginal information content for firms with initial coverage is greater than firms which are already in the …
Study Of Asphalt And Polymer-Modified Asphalt: Microstructure, Compatibility And Reinforcement Effect., Zhaoyao Qiu
Study Of Asphalt And Polymer-Modified Asphalt: Microstructure, Compatibility And Reinforcement Effect., Zhaoyao Qiu
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Eight asphalt samples with grades ranging from 10 to 30 from four different sources were examined using NMR, FTIR, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) and constant stress rheometry (CSR). The crystallization process of asphalt is very time dependent. Slow heating or annealing before analysis in order to experimentally realize a close-to-equilibrium state is necessary in order to study the system with more thermodynamic rigor. The DSC method developed in this research shows a possible application in asphalt identification with respect to crude and manufacture source. Dynamic mechanic analysis shows in asphalts only those segments primarily composed of …

Robert Cavally's Edition Of G. F. Handel's Solo Flute Sonatas: An Evaluation And Historical Perspective., Lisa Karen Read
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Teachers are frequently faced with the difficult dilemma of determining what edition of a particular Baroque work they should recommend to their students. This decision is becoming even more difficult as modern publishers continue to produce new editions of standard repertoire. Such is the case with G. F. Handel's solo sonatas, often referred to as his "Opus 1". One publication of these sonatas that has been popular for over fifty years among flutists and flute teachers is G. F. Handel: Seven Sonatas and Famous Largo for Flute and Piano, edited by Robert Cavally (c. 1941). Because this edition was prepared …
Fundamental Studies Of Capillary Electroosmosis And Electrokinetic Removal Of Phenol From Kaolinite., Heyi Li
Fundamental Studies Of Capillary Electroosmosis And Electrokinetic Removal Of Phenol From Kaolinite., Heyi Li
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Capillary electroosmosis is an important factor in capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE) and micellar electrokinetic capillary chromatography (MECC). A new application of electrokinetic phenomena in environmental science is electrokinetic soil processing, which is an emerging technique with the capability to decontaminate polluted soils. Chapter 1 discusses the fundamental theory behind electroosmosis, CZE, MECC, and electrokinetic soil processing. In chapter 2, the surface conductances of different concentrations of KCl solutions in 50 and 100 $\mu$m capillaries were measured using an AC method, to attempt to characterize capillary double layers. With increase of KCl concentration, the surface conductance increases. Chapter 3 involves fundamental …
Colonial Natal, 1838 To 1880: The Making Of A South African Settlementsystem. (Volumes I And Ii)., Darrell Peter Kruger
Colonial Natal, 1838 To 1880: The Making Of A South African Settlementsystem. (Volumes I And Ii)., Darrell Peter Kruger
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The study of colonial settlement policy is one way for human geographers to understand how people shape the places they inhabit. The major concern of this study was to determine the impact of Dutch-Afrikaner, Native, and British cultures on the Natal colonial settlement system between 1838 and 1879. A prolonged era (1844-1879) of British settlement policy was preceded by a brief period of Dutch-Afrikaner hegemony (1838-1843). I test the hypothesis that Natal's British settlement system was a syncretic compromise between European and South African (Native and Dutch-Afrikaner) adaptations. My interpretation turns on frontier processes of transfer and borrowing. I suggest …
Bioavailability Of Nonexchangeable Ammonium In Soils., Sivapatham Paramasivam
Bioavailability Of Nonexchangeable Ammonium In Soils., Sivapatham Paramasivam
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The agriculturally important soils of the lower Mississippi alluvial plain typically display surprisingly high levels of nitrogen (N) fertility given the low amounts of organic matter and readily available forms of N characteristically present in these soils. The principal goal of this research was to investigate N dynamics in these soils with special attention devoted to the possible role of clay-fixed NH$\sb4\sp+$ in N fertility. Characterization of the N distribution in 9 soil profiles (0-150 cm) representative of the principal agricultural soils of the lower Mississippi River alluvial plain indicated that most of the N in surface horizons was in …
Translational Studies Of Equine Infectious Anemia Virus Rna And Analysis Of The Viral Regulatory Proteins., Rodney Louis Schiltz
Translational Studies Of Equine Infectious Anemia Virus Rna And Analysis Of The Viral Regulatory Proteins., Rodney Louis Schiltz
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The 3.5-kb RNA of equine infectious anemia virus (EIAV) is shown here to encode the S1, S2 and envelope proteins in vitro. S1 is expressed from this RNA despite the lack of an AUG codon. Deletion mutants of a cDNA derived from the 3.5-kb RNA were used to determine that sequences within the first 14 codons of ORF S1 are required for S1 expression in vitro and trans-activation in vivo. Amino-terminal sequence analysis of the in vitro synthesized S1 protein is consistent with initiation at a CUG codon. The translation properties of the 3.5-kb RNA have been examined in wheat …
An Adaptive Finite Element Methodology For The High-Performance Computer Simulation Of Multiphase Flow Processes., Donald J. Morton Jr
An Adaptive Finite Element Methodology For The High-Performance Computer Simulation Of Multiphase Flow Processes., Donald J. Morton Jr
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A methodology has been developed for the computer simulation of multiphase flow processes in porous media. The solutions to the nonlinear equations describing these processes are approximated by Galerkin's method on the spatial dimensions and the finite difference method on the temporal dimension. Due to the transient nature of discontinuities in the spatial domain, dynamic mesh refinement (and unrefinement) techniques, based on the maintenance of a 1-irregular mesh, are employed on a two dimensional mesh to produce fine resolution in regions of activity and coarse resolution elsewhere. Our unique approach is tested by comparing computed results with data from laboratory …

Densities were highest adjacent to the platform and decreased significantly beyond 9 m. Approximately 2,400 to 8,300 fish were associated with the platform depending on month. Target strengths ranged from $-$56 to $-$24 dB and varied with side of the platform and month. Mean monthly …
Geographical Factors Influencing The Rise And Growth Of Cotton Textile Manufacturing In The South Carolina Piedmont, 1880-1940. (Volumes I And Ii)., Gregory John Labyak
Geographical Factors Influencing The Rise And Growth Of Cotton Textile Manufacturing In The South Carolina Piedmont, 1880-1940. (Volumes I And Ii)., Gregory John Labyak
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Despite the South's defeat in the Civil War and the economic hardships occasioned by the conflict and its aftermath, Southerners possessed the resources and the enthusiasm to undertake an industrial campaign that greatly altered the economic course of their region. Industrial development in the South, centered largely on cotton textiles, focused on the Piedmont. The area possessed several advantages over other Southern subregions as a center of cotton manufacturing, but it failed to supply all of the raw material, capital, and labor needed by the rapidly-growing industry. This study examines the progress of cotton textile manufacturing in the South Carolina …
Reaction-Intermediate Analogues: Design, Syntheses, And Inhibitory Studies With Carnitine Acetyltransferase., Guobin Sun
Reaction-Intermediate Analogues: Design, Syntheses, And Inhibitory Studies With Carnitine Acetyltransferase., Guobin Sun
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Carnitine acetyltransferase (CAT) catalyzes the reversible transfer of short chain (less than six carbons in length) acyl groups between carnitine and coenzyme A (CoA). This reaction likely modulates the reserves of free CoA and acetyl-CoA in each organelle and membrane in ways specific to the local demands. To probe the structures of the molecular interactions between carnitine and the active site in CAT, we have designed and synthesized conformationally constrained reaction-intermediate analogues, which not only inhibit enzymatic activity, but also help reveal the topography of the active site. The syntheses of (2R,6R)-, (2S,6S)-, (2R,6S)-, and (2S,6R)-6-carboxylatomethyl-2-hydroxymethyl-2,4,4-trimethylmorpholinium are described. The single-crystal …
A Self-Adaptive Database Buffer Replacement Scheme., Yueguo Tong
A Self-Adaptive Database Buffer Replacement Scheme., Yueguo Tong
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The overall performance of a database system is very sensitive to the buffer replacement algorithm used. However, the performance evaluation of database buffer replacement algorithms commonly assumes that database accesses are independent and the probability for each individual database record to be accessed is fixed. Due to these rigid assumptions, the results of performance evaluation are not always reliable. In this dissertation, we apply Simon's model of information accessing to model database accessing frequencies. This approach relaxes the independent assumption, and since it also allows certain dynamic behavior in accessing frequencies; thus, it is more robust and preferable over the …
Reactivity And Mechanistic Studies On Bimetallic Hydroformylation Rhodium Catalyst Systems., Spencer George Train
Reactivity And Mechanistic Studies On Bimetallic Hydroformylation Rhodium Catalyst Systems., Spencer George Train
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The fundamental purpose of this project was to expand the knowledge of the et,ph-P4 ligand system, $\rm Et\sb2PCH\sb2CH\sb2P(Ph)CH\sb2P(Ph)CH\sb2CH\sb2PEt\sb2$, used to make the very active bimetallic catalyst racemic- ($\rm Rh\sb2(NBD)\sb2(et,ph$-P4)) (BF$\sb4)\sb2$. The ligand was designed to both bridge and chelate two metal centers to allow the metals to remain in close proximity. This is the key to the bimetallic cooperativity concept involved in the hydroformylation of olefin substrates, where an intramolecular hydride transfer has been proposed to occur from one rhodium center to another during the catalytic cycle. This project involved the study of a variety of olefin substrates to probe …
The Effect Of Capital Structure And Consolidated Control On Firm Performance, Firm Value, Insider Trading, And Market Microstructure: The Case Of Dual Versus Single-Class Initial Public Offerings., Sanjay B. Varshney
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation examines the importance of equity structure choice by management in the context of IPOs. Specifically, it identifies and presents some managerial motives for a dual-class equity structure at the time of IPO that derive from governance and market microstructure considerations, and analyzes the effects of dual-class common stock structures (versus single voting class common stock) and the distribution of voting power on initial underpricing, subsequent after-market pricing, long-run firm performance, insider trading, firm liquidity and related market microstructure issues. To assess underpricing and performance differences that are due to the firm's ownership structure, a control sample of single-class …
Kinetics Of The Immune Response To Mycobacterium Paratuberculosis Of Resistant And Susceptible Mice., Ronald Sidney Veazey Jr
Kinetics Of The Immune Response To Mycobacterium Paratuberculosis Of Resistant And Susceptible Mice., Ronald Sidney Veazey Jr
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The resistance and immunologic responses of a Bcg susceptible (C57BL/6) and Bcg resistant (C3H/He) strain of mouse were compared after infection with Mycobacterium paratuberculosis. Bacterial resistance was evaluated by bacterial counts and histopathology of chronically infected mice. Levels of non-specific macrophage activation and the response of various T cell subsets were also evaluated following infection. Susceptible mice orally infected with Mycobacterium paratuberculosis developed granulomatous lesions containing acid-fast bacteria in the mesenteric lymph nodes. Significant differences in CFU of M. paratuberculosis were observed between C57BL/6 and C3H/He mice following an i.p. infection. Susceptible mice failed to limit bacterial proliferation, while bacterial …
Effect Of Processing On Protein And Carotenoids In Weaning Food Formulated From Sweetpotatoes, Or Apios Americana., Michael Andrew Ameny
Effect Of Processing On Protein And Carotenoids In Weaning Food Formulated From Sweetpotatoes, Or Apios Americana., Michael Andrew Ameny
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
White flesh sweetpotatoes (Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam) are a major food crop in developing countries. This study was to evaluate the protein and carotenoid content and quality of various white fleshed African sweetpotatoes and Apios americana tubers for use as a weaning food. The sweetpotato and Apios are not normally considered sources of carotenoids and proteins, but the wide use of sweetpotatoes as a source of carbohydrate and the renewed interest in Apios warrant the study of carotenoids and proteins in these crops. Total carotenoids ranged from 0$\mu{\rm g}$/100g to 260$\mu$g/100g (fresh weight basis) for sweetpotatoes. Apios total carotenoids ranged …
The Relationship Between Intrinsic And Augmented Feedback In Motor Skill Learning., David Ian Anderson
The Relationship Between Intrinsic And Augmented Feedback In Motor Skill Learning., David Ian Anderson
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Four experiments examined the influence of knowledge of results (KR) schedule and the characteristics of intrinsic feedback on the acquisition and retention of a simple motor task. In the first experiment, subjects practiced a one-dimensional aiming movement and were provided with KR either directly after each trial or after a delay of two trials. The results showed that subjects who received KR after a delay of two trials were less accurate in acquisition but more accurate in retention than subjects who received KR directly after each trial. These results were replicated in a second experiment using a two-dimensional aiming movement. …
The Influence Of Regional-Scale Circulation On Precipitation Variability In The Southern United States., Anthony Jude Vega
The Influence Of Regional-Scale Circulation On Precipitation Variability In The Southern United States., Anthony Jude Vega
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The proximity of the southern United States to large water bodies, mountain systems, and the arid climate of the desert southwest makes extended precipitation forecasts exceedingly difficult. In order to better understand the complex precipitation mechanisms, this analysis addresses the relationships between the regional-scale circulation and long-term precipitation variability and change in the southern US for each season through a 42 year study period. Five unique precipitation regions were created for each season, and seasonal anomalies were calculated and examined by region for changes in variability and slope through time. Long-term climate change was detected in the precipitation regions only …
Effect Of Temperature, Cell Concentration, And Split Dose Gamma Radiation On The Radiosensitivity Of Listeria Monocytogenes., Linda S. Andrews
Effect Of Temperature, Cell Concentration, And Split Dose Gamma Radiation On The Radiosensitivity Of Listeria Monocytogenes., Linda S. Andrews
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Among food-borne pathogens, Listeria monocytogenes is one of the more resistant to food processing methods, including irradiation. USFDA approval for irradiation of processed meat and seafood products likely to contain Listeria spp. is $<$3 kGy gamma radiation. The incidence of L. monocytogenes in food products varies between 5-30% and at levels $<10\sp4$ CFU/g. With the capacity of this bacterium to multiply at refrigeration temperatures and the zero tolerance level mandated by the USFDA it becomes imperative to maximize the efficiency of the irradiation process. The first purpose of this study was to determine if initial cell concentration and/or temperature at time of irradiation influences the radiosensitivity of L. monocytogenes. Secondly, to determine whether split dose application would effect the radiation response of this bacterium. Concentrations of 10$\sp3,$ 10$\sp6$ and 10$\sp9$ cfu/ml of L. monocytogenes Scott A, were suspended in tryptic soy broth and exposed to 0-5 kGy gamma (1.25MeV) radiation at 20, 4, and -80$\sp\circ{\rm C}.$ Split doses were applied in equal portions to initial cell concentrations of 10$\sp6$ and 10$\sp9$ at the same temperatures. Surviving cells under the various conditions were enumerated and irradiation D-values were calculated from linear regression curves. At all temperatures, cell concentrations of 10$\sp3{\rm CFU/ml}$ were reduced to non recoverable levels with 2 kGy gamma radiation. The irradiation D-value of 0.43 kGy for frozen (-80$\sp\circ{\rm C})$ cultures of 10$\sp6$ CFU/ml was significantly lower (p $<$ 0.05) than the D-values (0.58 and 0.62 kGy) for the same cell concentration at the other two temperatures (20$\sp\circ$ and 4$\sp\circ{\rm C},$ respectively). For higher cell concentration of 10$\sp9$ cfu/ml, a D-value of 0.42 kGy was obtained for both 4$\sp\circ{\rm C}$ and -80$\sp\circ{\rm C}$ these were significantly lower (p $<$ 0.05) than 0.50 kGy for 20$\sp\circ{\rm C}$ suspensions. With both cell concentrations, the lowest D-values were obtained when cells were irradiated in the frozen state indicating a that primary cell damage was due to direct effects of irradiation. Split doses of 1 and 2 hours time between fractions approached the generation times for this bacterium and were significantly reduced at 20$\sp\circ{\rm C}.$ However, there was no consistent trend in reductions at 4$\sp\circ$ or -80$\sp\circ{\rm C}.$ Split dose application of irradiation to food pathogens should be further explored.
Life History Responses To Fire Season In A Clonal Herb, Pityopsis Graminifolia (Asteraceae)., John Stephen Brewer
Life History Responses To Fire Season In A Clonal Herb, Pityopsis Graminifolia (Asteraceae)., John Stephen Brewer
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The effects of three fire seasons (May, August, and January) on reproductive success and clonal growth of a golden aster (Pityopsis graminifolia) were examined within experimental burn plots in a longleaf pine savanna in north Florida. Several factors influenced reproductive success in this species, including rates of floral induction and bud herbivory, clone fecundity, and seedling dynamics. Flowering was induced by fire, especially when it occurred in May or August. Fire season affected rates of floral induction and bud herbivory by as much as one to two orders of magnitude. Sizes of bolting shoots were also affected by fire season. …
Energy Dependence Of Photoion Rotational Distributions., Heung-Cheun Choi
Energy Dependence Of Photoion Rotational Distributions., Heung-Cheun Choi
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Highly resolved molecular photoionization is a topic of intense current interest due to insights it provides into fundamental scattering processes. Rotationally resolved data provide a window on the angular momentum composition of the photoelectron and the partitioning of angular momentum between the ion and photoelectron. Since the earliest rotational measurements via photoelectron spectroscopy (PES) of H$\sb2$ using resonance lamp excitation, studies have accelerated as a result of experimental innovations. However, all of these recent developments have been limited to threshold or near-threshold ionization phenomena. In order to bypass this constraint, we have employed dispersed fluorescence measurements. This strategy allows us …
On Information Usage Modeling., Ping Pete Chong
On Information Usage Modeling., Ping Pete Chong
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Although it is well-known that the usage of information usually follows the 80/20 rule and concentrates on a few items, there has not been an analytical model to depict this skew distribution. This dissertation provides a theoretical foundation, based on Simon's modeling of empirical phenomena and Chen's index approach, to identify the factors which shape this usage pattern. Using Chen's index approach, we conclude that the distance and slope of the data points determine the shape of the distribution. We further examine the critical parameters in Simon's model through computer simulations, and we find the probability of new entry ($\alpha$) …

Inference For Unreplicated Factorial And Fractional Factorial Designs., William J. Kasperski
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The ability to determine which factors significantly affect a product or process can help to improve its quality. Usually there are many factors to be considered initially, but a limited amount of time and money, so it is important to screen the numerous factors with a limited number of experimental trials. In this situation, unreplicated factorial and fractional factorial designs are often used, but because these experiments are unreplicated they do not possess a formal estimate of the experimental error variance. Several methods have been proposed by Daniel, Box and Meyer, Benski, Lenth, and Schneider, Kasperski, and Weissfeld to determine …
A Heuristic Approach For Shortest Path Problem With Rectilinear Obstacles., Joon Shik Lim
A Heuristic Approach For Shortest Path Problem With Rectilinear Obstacles., Joon Shik Lim
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation presents new heuristic search algorithms, the Guided Minimum Detour (GMD) algorithm and the Line-by-Line Guided Minimum Detour (LGMD) algorithm for searching rectilinear ($L\sb1$) shortest paths in the presence of rectilinear obstacles. The GMD algorithm combines the best features of maze-running algorithms and line-search algorithms. The LGMD algorithm is a modification of the GMD algorithm that improves on efficiency using line-by-line extensions. Our GMD and LGMD algorithms always find a rectilinear shortest path using the guided $A\sp*$ search method without constructing a connection graph that contains a shortest path. The GMD algorithm and the LGMD algorithm can be implemented …
