Extended Loops: A New Arena For Nonperturbative Quantum Gravity, Cayetano Di Bartolo, Rodolfo Gambini, Jorge Griego, Jorge Pullin
Extended Loops: A New Arena For Nonperturbative Quantum Gravity, Cayetano Di Bartolo, Rodolfo Gambini, Jorge Griego, Jorge Pullin
Faculty Publications
We propose a new representation for gauge theories and quantum gravity. Alternatively, it can be viewed as a new framework for doing computations in the loop representation. It is based on the use of a novel mathematical structure that extends the group of loops into a Lie group. This extension allows the use of functional methods to solve the diffeomorphism and Hamiltonian constraint equations. It puts in a precise framework some of the regularization problems of the loop representation. It has practical advantages in the search for quantum states. Making use of it we are able to find a new …
Late-Time Behavior Of Stellar Collapse And Explosions. Ii. Nonlinear Evolution, Carsten Gundlach, Richard H. Price, Jorge Pullin
Late-Time Behavior Of Stellar Collapse And Explosions. Ii. Nonlinear Evolution, Carsten Gundlach, Richard H. Price, Jorge Pullin

We compare the predictions of linearized theory for the radiation produced in the collapse of a spherically symmetric scalar field with a full numerical integration of the Einstein equations. We find power-law tails and quasinormal ringing remarkably similar to predictions of linearized theory even in cases where nonlinearities are crucial. We also show that power-law tails develop even when the collapsing scalar field fails to produce a black hole. © 1994 The American Physical Society.
Colliding Black Holes: The Close Limit, Richard H. Price, Jorge Pullin
Colliding Black Holes: The Close Limit, Richard H. Price, Jorge Pullin

The problem of the mutual attraction and joining of two black holes is of importance as both a source of gravitational waves and as a testbed of numerical relativity. If the holes start out close enough that they are initially surrounded by a common horizon, the problem can be viewed as a perturbation of a single black hole. We take initial data due to Misner for close black holes, apply perturbation theory, and evolve the data with the Zerilli equation. The computed gravitational radiation agrees with and extends the results of full numerical computations. © 1994 The American Physical Society.

Chromosome And Sperm Size Of Holsteins With And Without Bovine Leukocyte Adhesion Deficiency, H. C. Steinholt, J. E. Chandler, R. A. Baron, R. W. Adkinson
Faculty Publications
The objective was to evaluate bull differences in chromosomal and spermatozoal areas related to the occurrence of the bovine leukocyte adhesion deficiency syndrome. Lymphocyte chromosomes from 30 Holstein bulls and 2 Holstein heifers were measured using image analysis and computer-enhanced video-microscopy. Spermatozoal head areas from 29 of the 30 bulls were measured. Autosomal rank was based on decreasing area. Average total autosomal areas were not the same across bulls. One group of bulls had significantly smaller average chromosomal areas than the others; this group carried bovine leukocyte adhesion deficiency syndrome. Area measures of spermatozoal heads showed that bulls with bovine …

Nanovid Microscopy For Assessing Sperm Membrane Changes Induced By In Vitro Capacitating And Acrosomal Reacting Procedures, Suzanne D. Degelos, Michael P. Wilson, John E. Chandler
Faculty Publications
ABSTRACT: This study was to verify the usefulness of Nanovid microscopy techniques for evaluating induced modifications in bovine spermatozoal membranes. Frozen thawed bovine sperm were labeled with 20‐nm colloidal gold particles bound to concanavalin A (ConA) or heparin ligands. Sperm membrane changes were induced in vitro by capacitating and acrosome‐reacting procedures. Capacitatton was induced by incubation with 10 μg/ml of heparin for 4 hours at 37°C, 5% CO2, and high humidity. Membrane changes associated with the acrosome reaction were induced by addition of lysophosphatidyicholine (100 μg/ml) and incubation for 15 minutes at 37°C, 5% CO2, and high humidity. Gray intensity …
A 6200-Year Environmental History Of The Pearl River Marsh, Louisiana., Xu Li
A 6200-Year Environmental History Of The Pearl River Marsh, Louisiana., Xu Li
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
An 8.81 m sediment core from the fresh marsh area of the Pearl River delta was examined for pollen, diatom, and organic content, to reconstruct the history of the late-Holocene environmental changes. The data show that prior to 5900 years B.P., the coring site was occupied by a swamp forest. Afterwards, the swamp was replaced by a marsh vegetation as a result of postglacial transgression. Since 5900 years B.P. the marsh has remained brackish for most of the time, characterized by abundant marine diatoms and brackish marsh pollen. However, the brackish water environment was interrupted at least two times when …
File Allocation And Join Site Selection Problem In Distributed Database Systems., Pil Kyo Seo
File Allocation And Join Site Selection Problem In Distributed Database Systems., Pil Kyo Seo
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
There are two important problems associated with the design of distributed database systems. One is the file allocation problem, and the other is the query optimization problem. In this research a methodology that considers both these aspects is developed that determines the optimal location of files and join sites for given queries simultaneously. Using this methodology, three different mixed integer programming models that describe three cases of the file allocation and join site selection problem are developed. Dual-based procedures are developed for each of the three mixed integer programming models. Extensive computational testing is performed which shows that the dual-based …
Comparative Hepatic Oxidative Biotransformation In Domestic Avian Species., June Lynn Sutherlin
Comparative Hepatic Oxidative Biotransformation In Domestic Avian Species., June Lynn Sutherlin
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study characterized the oxidative biotransformation capacity of the hepatic cytochrome P-450 system of selected avian species representing the Galliformes (chicken, turkey and Japanese quail) and Anseriformes (goose, Pekin duck, Khaki Campbell duck, and Muscovy duck) orders. Two objectives were addressed; first, important biotransformation pathways were evaluated in economically major and minor food-producing avian species to provide a framework on which to base drug approval decisions in these species. Second, the potential use of the selected species as sentinel organisms utilizing cytochrome P-450 induction as a biomarker of environmental chemical exposure was evaluated. The male rat was utilized for the …
Eric Voegelin's Mystical Epistemology And Its Influence On Ethics And Politics., Charles Warren Burchfield
Eric Voegelin's Mystical Epistemology And Its Influence On Ethics And Politics., Charles Warren Burchfield
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The primary purpose of this dissertation is to examine and analyze Eric Voegelin's theory of knowledge, and to see what implications it has on his theories of ethics and politics. The profundity of Voegelin's epistemological search and recovery is apparent when placed in the context of his disillusionment with and resistance to the dominant epistemology of his day, namely, positivism. Through a recovery and restoration of the symbolizations of classical and Christian philosophy, Voegelin searches for and finds experiential knowledge which is gained through faith in search of understanding (fides quaerens intellectum), which brings about a vision of the whole …

Susceptibility In Soybean To Red Crown Rot And Characteristics Of Virulence In Calonectria Crotalariae., Ki Deok Kim
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Susceptibility in soybean to red crown rot was investigated and virulence in Calonectria crotalariae was characterized. The following areas were examined: (i) variability and stability in virulence among C. crotalariae isolates, (ii) disease reaction in soybean cultivars in a greenhouse inoculation technique, (iii) disease development on hosts of different ages at time of inoculation, (iv) cultural characteristics and presence of dsRNA in isolates, and (v) the involvement of a toxin(s) in the C. crotalariae/soybean system. A wide range in virulence of isolates of C. crotalariae was observed, and soybean isolates were more virulent on soybean than were peanut isolates. Virulence …
The Dimensionality Of Factors Underlying Satisfaction With Continuing Care Retirement Communities., Aimee Desobry Prawitz
The Dimensionality Of Factors Underlying Satisfaction With Continuing Care Retirement Communities., Aimee Desobry Prawitz
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The purpose was to develop and test a model to predict satisfaction with consumer selection of continuing care retirement communities (CCRCs). The family resource management conceptual framework of Deacon and Firebaugh (1988) provided the theoretical base for development of the proposed model. Another area of study, consumer behavior, was drawn upon to find pertinent indicators for the decision-making component of the model. Constructs of the Engel, Blackwell and Miniard (1990) consumer behavior model were incorporated to represent the managerial aspect of the family resource management model. The model was tested by applying it to the CCRC selection process of consumers. …
Pairing And Quadrupole Interactions In The Pseudo-Su(3) Shell Model., Chairul Bahri
Pairing And Quadrupole Interactions In The Pseudo-Su(3) Shell Model., Chairul Bahri
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Pseudo-SU(3) symmetry along with its simple symmetry-preserving and symmetry-breaking interactions is presented. This symmetry is a direct consequence of pseudo-spin symmetry which can be clearly seen in a single-particle shell model picture of heavy (A $\sbsp{\sim}{>}$ 100) atomic nuclei. Good pseudo-spin symmetry is shown to have its origin at a more fundamental level by considering relativistic mean field results for the strength parameters of the spin-orbit and the orbit-orbit interactions. As long as the residual interaction is a pseudo-spin scalar interaction, the many-particle extension of the single-particle picture is also expected to have, good total pseudo-spin symmetry. The quadrupole-quadrupole interaction …
Crust Formation In Soils Of Mexico And Louisiana., Miguel Angel Martinez-Gamino
Crust Formation In Soils Of Mexico And Louisiana., Miguel Angel Martinez-Gamino
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Crust formation in three soils from Mexico (Nadurargid, Durustoll and Calciorthid) and three soils from Louisiana (two Fragiudalfs, and a Hapludalf) was investigated. The objectives were: (1) to characterize crust morphology; (2) to quantify type, distribution, and geochemistry of cementing agents; and (3) to evaluate the effect of management practices on infiltration, erosion, crust strength, and corn and soybean emergence. Three management practices, bare, protected, and gypsum-amended were evaluated. Crust morphology in the soils of Louisiana indicated the development of a compacted layer in the upper 0.1 mm of the bare and gypsum-amended soils. Aggregation was improved with the gypsum …
Effects Of Dietary Boron In Rats Fed A Vitamin D-Deficient Diet, J. N. Dupre, M. J. Keenan, M. Hegsted, A. M. Brudevold
Effects Of Dietary Boron In Rats Fed A Vitamin D-Deficient Diet, J. N. Dupre, M. J. Keenan, M. Hegsted, A. M. Brudevold
Faculty Publications
Although boron has long been known to be a required nutrient for plants, it was not until recently that there was any suggestion of a nutritional requirement for animals and humans. Addition of boron to the diet of vitamin D-deficient chicks indicated that boron may play a role in animal nutrition. Studies with rats have demonstrated that supplemental dietary boron has most marked effects when the diet is deficient in known nutrients. We observed higher apparent-balance values of calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus for rats fed a vitamin D-deprived diet with dietary supplemental boron (2.72 ppm), than for rats fed the …
Modeling Transport Of Non Aqueous Wastes In Unsaturated Soils., Dharmesh Vinaychandra Doshi
Modeling Transport Of Non Aqueous Wastes In Unsaturated Soils., Dharmesh Vinaychandra Doshi
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
In evaluating risks associated with chemical spills on the ground surface or leaks from underground storage tanks, it is required to know the extent and degree of contamination in the subsurface. In many cases pure organics are spilled and due to their low miscibility with water they remain pure or concentrated for some distance or time from the source. This dissertation is aimed at developing a model of the multiphase (air, water, organic) migration processes. The particular focus is on modeling organic infiltration in the unsaturated zone where the transport is largely vertical. Sand-column experiments using a variety of immiscible …
Murderous Historian: Henry Adams, Modernity, And The Problem Of Subjectivity. (Volumes I And Ii)., Martha Moseley Regalis
Murderous Historian: Henry Adams, Modernity, And The Problem Of Subjectivity. (Volumes I And Ii)., Martha Moseley Regalis
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study traces Henry Adams's evolution from an enlightenment historian to a prescient postmodern theorist, and explores how he came to regard his own intellectual history as paradigmatic of the arc of subjectivity in the West from the Middle Ages to Nietzsche and Bergson. Adams was a self-conscious philosophical nominalist, and he believed that his radical doubts about the capacity of language for embodying meaning had their origin in medieval nominalism. Adams found the seeds of modernity and the problem of subjectivity which were the focus of his own musings on the nature of the self and history in Abelard …
Narrative And Representation In French Colonial Literature Of Indochina., Jean Marie Turcotte Walls
Narrative And Representation In French Colonial Literature Of Indochina., Jean Marie Turcotte Walls
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study focuses on the establishment and critical legitimation of colonial literature as a genre during the period of intense colonial development in France from approximately 1871-1930. Fictional accounts of the French involvement in Indochina are used to examine the paradoxes of colonial representation. Les Civilises by Claude Farrere, Le Kilometre 83 by Henri Daguerches, and Sur la Route Mandarine by Roland Dorgeles are examined in terms of the inconsistencies and contradictions which emerge from the efforts of the narrator/colonizer to inscribe and represent the other in a composite colonial system. These texts are examined in terms of three textual …
Use Of Uncertainty Methodology In Identification And Classification Of Soils Based Upon Cpt., Zhongjie Zhang
Use Of Uncertainty Methodology In Identification And Classification Of Soils Based Upon Cpt., Zhongjie Zhang
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The current Cone Penetration Test (CPT) soil engineering classifications have two kinds of uncertainties: randomness and fuzziness. Research indicates that possible solutions to these uncertainties can only be worked out through modeling them. Therefore, a systematic investigation is performed and some preparative tasks are done in advance. First, an efficient soil classification index, U, is defined and several CPT soil classification charts are simplified accordingly. Second, a moving window approach based upon an Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC) to determine normal soil behavior units is adopted so that a correlation between soil types and soil behavior units can be established. Based …
Gaseous Exchange And Wetland Plant Response To Soil Redox Conditions., Hillarius Kodzo Kludze
Gaseous Exchange And Wetland Plant Response To Soil Redox Conditions., Hillarius Kodzo Kludze
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Laboratory studies pertaining to effects of soil redox conditions on gas exchange and plant responses were undertaken. A colorimetric method for assaying O$\sb2$ concentration in the root rhizosphere was used to quantify radial O$\sb2$ loss from plant roots. The oxidizing power of seven rice cultivars, grown under aerobic and hypoxic conditions, was measured colorimetrically with titanium-citrate solution. Oxygen release rate was calculated by extrapolation of measured absorbance to standard curves after placing plant roots in the solution for 6 h. Since Ti$\sp{3+}$ ions readily react with O$\sb2$ as it is released from roots, the technique provides a sensitive measurement of …

An Investigation Of Secondary School Instrumentalists' Responses To Wind Band Music Across Variables Present During An Aesthetic Response., Ricky Wynn Brooks
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study was to investigate secondary school students' responses to wind band music. Four variables--attention to the stimulus, familiarity, intellectual response, and emotional response--identified in research as characteristics of an aesthetic response were examined. Junior high (n = 60) and high school (n = 60) band students were randomly assigned to one of two listening conditions. In order to isolate focus of attention, subjects in a focused listening condition indicated preferences while listening to each excerpt by operating a Continuous Response Digital Interface dial. Subjects in an unfocused listening condition listened to each excerpt in an unrestricted …

Enzymatic Hydrolysis Of Crawfish Processing By-Products For Bioflavor Production., Hyung-Hee Baek
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Crawfish processing by-products (CPBs) were hydrolyzed using protease to evaluate the potential for bioflavor production. Ten commercial proteases (neutral and alkaline) were tested at both 37$\sp\circ$C and their optimum temperatures using CPBs as substrate. Of these, APL-440 was selected for enzymatic hydrolysis of CPBs on the basis of activity per cost. Response surface methodology (RSM) was used to optimize the hydrolysis of CPBs using APL-440. Optimum hydrolysis conditions for enzymatic hydrolysis of CPBs with APL-440 were determined to be pH 8-9, 65$\sp\circ$C, 2.5 hr reaction time, 75% substrate concentration, and 0.3% APL-440. Two types of CPBs (composite and claw) were …
May I Speak? A Hermeneutic Conversation Of Secondary Students' Experiences Of Curriculum., Kathryn M. Benson
May I Speak? A Hermeneutic Conversation Of Secondary Students' Experiences Of Curriculum., Kathryn M. Benson
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study is to allow for a phenomenological, hermeneutic treatment of students' experiences of curriculum. The foci of this study are to stake a claim for the students' situated positions within educational research and to provide spaces within academic research where students' voices might be heard concerning their experiences of curriculum. After posing the problem of a lack of students' perspectives in educational research, I present the study's methodology: a blending of Gadamer's philosophical hermeneutics and van Manen's hermeneutic phenomenology. Terms which seem salient to the study are as follows: silence, voice, conversation, and experience. Categorical thematic …
"Rag-Tag And Bob-Ends Of Old Stories": Biblical Intertextuality In Faulkner, Hurston, Wright, And O'Connor., Timothy Paul Caron
"Rag-Tag And Bob-Ends Of Old Stories": Biblical Intertextuality In Faulkner, Hurston, Wright, And O'Connor., Timothy Paul Caron
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Liqht in August, Moses, Man of the Mountain, Uncle Tom's Children, and Wise Blood all borrow from the South's religious traditions. Recognizing the authority given to the Book, Faulkner, Hurston, Wright, and O'Connor invoke and re-read its central stories, characters, and tropes in order to voice their individual contributions to the South's intra-cultural conversation on race. In various ways, each work claims the necessity of the South to revitalize its practice of biblical interpretation. All of these texts comment upon the South's racial struggles over exactly how the Bible was to be interpreted: is it a book to aid in …
Neogene Extension And Regional Rotation Of The Central Mojave Desert, California., Timothy Michael Ross
Neogene Extension And Regional Rotation Of The Central Mojave Desert, California., Timothy Michael Ross
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The southwest Cady Mountains of San Bernardino County, California, contain key relationships which allow separation of the timing of early Miocene detachment-style extension and vertical-axis clockwise rotation in the Mojave Desert. The rock succession consists of a pre-Tertiary granitic basement overlain by three successive volcanic and volcaniclastic units of early to middle Miocene age referred to informally as the formation of Poe, the formation of Troy Peak and the "Barstow Formation". Deposition of the volcanic upper Oligocene/lower Miocene formation of Poe was accompanied by extension and tilting, facilitated by faults which do not cut the unconformably overlying formation of Troy …
Literature Of Protest: The Franco Years., Margaret Carmell Gonzalez
Literature Of Protest: The Franco Years., Margaret Carmell Gonzalez
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study examines the relationship between Spanish literature and political opposition under the Franco regime. Chapter 1 introduces the concept of a political discourse that characterizes a historical era, specifically addressing that of the Franco era in Spain. Directly linked to the idea of a political discourse is the theory of a literary generation, united by the common experiences or characteristics of a specific time period, such as those of the Franco regime. Together, these two concepts helped establish a foundation for the transition to democracy in Spain. Chapter 2 discusses the mythic foundations of Spanish culture in general, and …
Instrumental And Sensory Characterization Of The Flavor Of Blue Crab (Callinectes Sapidus) Meat And Processing By-Product., Hau Yin Chung
Instrumental And Sensory Characterization Of The Flavor Of Blue Crab (Callinectes Sapidus) Meat And Processing By-Product., Hau Yin Chung
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Blue crab (Callinectes sapidus) meat and its processing by-product (CPB) were characterized by instrumental, olfactometric, and sensory techniques to determine the usefulness of CPB as a feed stock for flavor recovery. Instrumental analysis with gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) and gas chromatography/Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy (GC/FTIR) allowed for the identification of 77 and 80 compounds in claw meat and CPB, respectively. Fifty-five compounds were found common to both samples, suggesting that CPB could be a good source for flavor recovery. Quantitatively, trimethylamine (TMA), alkanes (C15-C17, C19), and indole were high ($>$50ng/g) in claw meat while TMA, carbon disulfide, dimethyltrisulfide, alkanes …
A Rhetorical Analysis Of Selected Pro-Slavery Sermons By Presbyterian Clergy In The Antebellum South., Russell Pepper Dill
A Rhetorical Analysis Of Selected Pro-Slavery Sermons By Presbyterian Clergy In The Antebellum South., Russell Pepper Dill
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study investigated the pro-slavery rhetoric of selected Presbyterian ministers in the antebellum South from 1843 to 1861. The first half of the Nineteenth Century was marked by significant social, political, and religious events to which Southern Evangelical Protestantism (i.e., Baptists, Methodists, and Presbyterians) was forced to respond. Representative of Southern Evangelical Protestantism, Presbyterian clergy had a reputation for education, influence, and pulpit eloquence. As evidence of their puissance and persuasion, the sermons in this study were circulated in print, most of them at the request of the local communities and newspapers of the day. A synthesis of two methodologies …
Elevation Of The Hatching Envelope In Penaeidea Shrimp: Morphology And Assembly., Patricia Stoops Glas
Elevation Of The Hatching Envelope In Penaeidea Shrimp: Morphology And Assembly., Patricia Stoops Glas
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The appearance of extracellular coats around "eggs" are associated with activation of the oocytes. This coat, termed fertilization envelope (sea urchins), chorion (fish), zona pellucida (mammals), capsule (crab) or hatching envelope (HE) (shrimp) serves as a polyspermy block (Wasserman, 1982) or microenvironment protecting the egg from bacteria or other hostile elements (Kudo and Inoue, 1989; Kudo and Teshima, 1991; Kudo, 1992; Epel, 1993). HE assembly is described for penaeoid shrimp (Lynn, et al., 1991) and is, in contrast to many systems, a fertilization independent event. However, the mechanisms of assembly appear similar to extracellular coat formation in other animal systems …

Temporal And Synoptic Analyses Of Heavy Rainfall In The Southeastern United States., Barry David Keim
Temporal And Synoptic Analyses Of Heavy Rainfall In The Southeastern United States., Barry David Keim
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The abundance of recent heavy rainstorms in the southeastern United States has raised concerns that excessive rainstorms may be increasing in frequency and magnitude across the region. For this reason, the heavy rainfall climatology was examined to determine whether long-term trends exist within the historic climate record. In addition, the synoptic conditions leading to these events were examined. The synoptic weather patterns that generated storm events over a 75 mm (3 inches) threshold were classified using an all-inclusive manual weather typing system. Heavy rainfall events in the region were generated primarily by frontal weather systems (79 percent) followed by tropical …
