Ligation Alters The Pathway Of Urea‐Induced Denaturation Of The Catalytic Trimer Of Escherichia Coli Aspartate Transcarbamylase, S. Bromberg, V. J. Licata, D. Mallikarachchi, N. M. Allewell
Ligation Alters The Pathway Of Urea‐Induced Denaturation Of The Catalytic Trimer Of Escherichia Coli Aspartate Transcarbamylase, S. Bromberg, V. J. Licata, D. Mallikarachchi, N. M. Allewell
Faculty Publications
We have examined the pathway and energetics of urea‐induced dissociation and unfolding of the catalytic trimer (C3) of aspartate transcarbamylase from Escherichia coli at low temperature in the absence and presence of carbamyl phosphate (CP; a substrate), N‐(phosphonacetyl)‐L‐Asp (PALA; a bisubstrate analog), and 2 anionic inhibitors, Cl− and ATP, by analytical gel chromatography supplemented by activity assays and ultraviolet difference spectroscopy. In the absence of active‐site ligands and in the presence of ATP, c3 dissociates below 2 M urea into swollen c chains that then gradually unfold from 2 to 6 M urea with little apparent cooperativity. Linear extrapolation to …

Associations Of Methanotrophs With The Roots And Rhizomes Of Aquatic Vegetation, G. M. King
Associations Of Methanotrophs With The Roots And Rhizomes Of Aquatic Vegetation, G. M. King
Faculty Publications
Results of an in vitro assay revealed that root-associated methane consumption was a common attribute of diverse emergent wetland macrophytes from a variety of habitats. Maximum potential uptake rates (V(maxp)) varied between about 1 and 10 μmol g (dry weight)-1 h-1, with no obvious correlation between rate and gross morphological characteristics of the plants. The V(maxp) corresponded to about 2 x 108 to 2 x 109 methanotrophs g (dry weight)-1, assuming that root-associated methanotrophs have cell- specific activities comparable to those of known isolates. V(maxp) varied seasonally for an aquatic grass, Calamogrostis canadensis, and for the cattail, Typha latifolia, with …
Survival And Recovery Of Methanotrophic Bacteria Starved Under Oxic And Anoxic Conditions, P. Roslev, G. M. King
Survival And Recovery Of Methanotrophic Bacteria Starved Under Oxic And Anoxic Conditions, P. Roslev, G. M. King
Faculty Publications
The effects of carbon deprivation on survival of methanotrophic bacteria were compared in cultures incubated in the presence and absence of oxygen in the starvation medium. Survival and recovery of the examined methanotrophs were generally highest for cultures starved under anoxic conditions as indicated by poststarvation measurements of methane oxidation, tetrazolium salt reduction, plate counts, and protein synthesis. Methylosinus trichosporium OB3b survived up to 6 weeks of carbon deprivation under anoxic conditions while maintaining a physiological state that allowed relatively rapid (hours) methane oxidation after substrate addition. A small fraction of cells starved under oxic and anoxic conditions (4 and …

Gumbo Yearbook
In words and especially photos, the Gumbo shows the people, places, and events that make each year unique. In addition to formal portraits of schools and departments, the book contains hundreds of snapshots of students with their friends and dozens of pages showcasing organizations. Gumbo Magazine, which chronicled the 1992-93 and 1993-94 school years, was primarily published when revenues were insufficient for a hardbound book.
A Description And Comparison Of Variables That Influence Recidivism Of Selected Juveniles., Martin P. Carr
A Description And Comparison Of Variables That Influence Recidivism Of Selected Juveniles., Martin P. Carr
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Nationally, over $1.6 billion is spent incarcerating juveniles. Prevention, rather than correction is needed to reduce these costs. The cost in human lives exceeds the 56,000 incarcerated juveniles. It touches more than those who commit the offense. Victims, families of victims and families of the convicted juvenile also pay a price to one degree or another. The purpose of this study was to identify and describe variables which may impact recidivism rates of selected juveniles who were charged and have arrest records on file. The research was based upon East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana, juvenile arrest files from 1981 through …
Characterization And Application Of Colloidal Gas Aphrons For Groundwater Remediation., Pradeep Gopal Chaphalkar
Characterization And Application Of Colloidal Gas Aphrons For Groundwater Remediation., Pradeep Gopal Chaphalkar
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study examines the basic properties of colloidal gas aphrons (CGAs) that are relevant to their applications in soil and groundwater decontamination. Results of experiments on the applicability of CGAs in the removal of organics from aqueous solutions and in the subsurface environment are presented. CGAs are dispersed microbubbles in an aqueous surfactant solution. When introduced into an aqueous system, CGAs undergo variation in sizes and numbers with time due to coalescence and/or creaming. To address the dynamic changes in the size, a particle size analyzer was utilized to characterize the suspension. An increase in the concentration of surfactant was …
An Improved Method For The Numerical Simulation Of Multiple Droplet Combustion., Ming-Sheng Chia
An Improved Method For The Numerical Simulation Of Multiple Droplet Combustion., Ming-Sheng Chia
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
An improved numerical method suitable for multidroplet calculations has been developed. With this improved method the combustion of droplets in a linear array can be simulated much more efficiently. The improved method is first applied to a viscous flow heat transfer model. In this model, momentum and heat transfer results are obtained for a linear array of an arbitrary number of solid spheres at any Reynolds number. The accuracy, flexibility and efficiency of the new method is shown in this model. The method is then used to include liquid-phase motion and a finite-rate, one-step chemical reaction in the gas phase. …
Primary Decomposition Of Torsion R[X]-Modules, William A. Adkins
Primary Decomposition Of Torsion R[X]-Modules, William A. Adkins
Faculty Publications
This paper is concerned with studying hereditary properties of primary decompositions of torsion R[X]-modules M which are torsion free as R-modules. Specifically, if an R[X]-submodule of M is pure as an R-submodule, then the primary decomposition of M determines a primary decomposition of the submodule. This is a generalization of the classical fact from linear algebra that a diagonalizable linear transformation on a vector space restricts to a diagonalizablc linear transformation of any invariant subspace. Additionally, primary decompositions are considered under direct sums and tensor product. © 1994, Hindawi Publishing Corporation. All rights reserved.

We study the power-law tails in the evolution of massless fields around a fixed background geometry corresponding to a black hole. We give analytical arguments for their existence at scri+, at the future horizon, and at future timelike infinity. We confirm their existence with numerical integrations of the curved spacetime wave equation on the background of a Schwarzschild and a Reissner-Nordström black hole. These results are relevant to studies of mass inflation and the instability of Cauchy horizons. The analytic arguments also suggest the behavior of the full nonlinear dynamics, which we study numerically in a companion paper. © 1994 …
