The Value Of Salt Marsh Edge Vs Interior As A Habitat For Fish And Decapod Crustaceans In A Louisiana Tidal Marsh, G. W. Peterson, R. Eugene Turner

Faculty Publications

Flume nets of various lengths and a 3-m seine were used to sample the fishes and macrocrustaceans using a flooded Louisiana salt marsh and the adjacent tidal creek. The experiment allowed for species-specific comparisons of the flooded marsh at the creek edge versus the interior. Of the 37,667 organisms collected in flume nets from January through November 1989, 89% were decapods (nine species) and 11% were fish (29 species). An additional 18,539 organisms (75% decapods and 25% fish) were collected from concurrent seine samples taken from July through November. Comparison of catches among different flume lengths and low tide versus …

A Rationale For Coastal Wetland Restoration Through Spoil Bank Management In Louisiana, Usa, R. Eugene Turner, E. M. Swenson, J. M. Lee Mar 1994

A Rationale For Coastal Wetland Restoration Through Spoil Bank Management In Louisiana, Usa, R. Eugene Turner, E. M. Swenson, J. M. Lee

Faculty Publications

The rationale and outline of an implementation plan for restoring coastal wetlands in Louisiana is presented. The rationale for the plan is based on reversing the consequences of documented cause-and-effect relationships between wetland loss and hydrologic change. The main feature is to modify the extensive interlocking network of dredged spoil deposits, or spoil banks, by reestablishing a more natural water flow at moderate flow velocity (/sec). Guidelines for site selection from thousands of potential sites are proposed. Examples of suitable sites are given for intermediate marshes. These sites exhibit rapid deterioration following partial or complete hydrologic impoundment, implying a strong …

Backfilling Canals To Restore Wetlands: Empirical Results In Coastal Louisiana, R. Eugene Turner, James M. Lee, Christopher Neill

Faculty Publications

Wetland restoration is largely a developing science and engineering enterprise. Analyses of results are too few and constrained to observations over a few years. We report here on the effectiveness of one restoration technique used sparsely in coastal Louisiana for several decades. Canals have been dredged in coastal Louisiana wetlands since 1938 for oil and gas exploration and extraction. These canals are typically dredged to 2.5 m depth and are 20 to 40 m wide. Canal lengths vary from 100 m to several 1000s m in the case of outer continental shelf pipeline canals that cross the wetlands.

Today, thousands …

A Water Balance Evaluation Of The Effects Of Climate Variability And Human Modification On The Flow Regime Of The Mississippi River, 1932-1988., Judy Lee Hoff Jan 1994

A Water Balance Evaluation Of The Effects Of Climate Variability And Human Modification On The Flow Regime Of The Mississippi River, 1932-1988., Judy Lee Hoff

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Human activities affecting runoff and streamflow within the Mississippi River drainage basin have been and continue to be significant. Since the disastrous flood of 1927, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has established an extensive regulatory system for flood control purposes and navigational benefits. Along with these river system modifications, significant landscape alterations have occurred within the basin as a result of cultural and economical development. In light of the dramatic Midwest flood of 1993, it becomes increasingly necessary to understand the comprehensive relationship between streamflow, climatic variability, and human-induced change within the overall drainage basin. A water balance methodology …

Reactor Analysis Of Chemical Vapor Deposition Of Titanium Dioxide And Copper Thin Films., Wing-Cheong Gilbert Lai Jan 1994

Reactor Analysis Of Chemical Vapor Deposition Of Titanium Dioxide And Copper Thin Films., Wing-Cheong Gilbert Lai

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A set of reactor models for chemical vapor deposition (CVD) of titanium dioxide films from titanium tetraisopropoxide (TTIP) in a vertical cold-wall CVD reactor has been developed. The effects of the carrier gas on the deposition of TiO$\sb2$ films were examined. The reaction mechanism proposed by the earlier workers in our group was used for the reactor modeling (Siefering and Griffin, 1990a; 1990b). The kinetic parameters were estimated from the reactor models at three levels of approximation; i.e., a lumped parameter (LP) model, a one-dimensional stagnation point flow reactor (1-D SPFR) model, and a full 2-D SPFR model. The 2-D …

Strategic Adaptation In The Banking Industry: An Exploration Of The Antecedents And Consequences Of Strategic Change Following Deregulation., Elton L. Scifres Jr Jan 1994

Strategic Adaptation In The Banking Industry: An Exploration Of The Antecedents And Consequences Of Strategic Change Following Deregulation., Elton L. Scifres Jr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation examined the antecedents and consequences of strategic change in the commercial banking industry between 1980 and 1987. Based on a review of the literature, a conceptual model was developed that predicted change would be influenced by two factors, adaptive forces and inertial forces. Adaptive forces include two factors that have been hypothesized to encourage change, prior performance and slack resources. Inertial forces include two factors sometimes thought to inhibit change, organizational size and age. Change outcomes were predicted to be influenced by degree of change and moderated by adaptive and inertial forces. Guided by previous theoretical and empirical …

Development Of Aluminum Tolerance In Rice (Oryza Sativa L.) Through Tissue Culture Techniques., Herry S. Utomo Jan 1994

Development Of Aluminum Tolerance In Rice (Oryza Sativa L.) Through Tissue Culture Techniques., Herry S. Utomo

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Three tissue culture techniques, somaclone evaluation, in vitro screening of suspension cells, and in vitro screening of protoplasts were evaluated for their potential to produce aluminum (Al) tolerant rice. For somaclone evaluation, a collection of 9,000 rice somaclones was screened. After 11 days of germination in 200 uM Al, the length of the primary root was measured and used as the criterion for selection since a principal effect of Al toxicity is inhibition of root growth. Four superior lines were identified. Root length of the most tolerant line was 50% greater than its control following germination in screening solution. A …

The Generalized Distributive Law As Tacit Knowledge In Algebra., Juanita Lavall Bates Jan 1994

The Generalized Distributive Law As Tacit Knowledge In Algebra., Juanita Lavall Bates

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purposes of this study were to investigate theories that explain why common errors of the type ($a \pm b)\sp{c} = a\sp{c} \pm b\sp{c}$ and $\root c \of {a \pm b} = \root c \of {a} \pm \root c \of {b}$ occur in algebra problem solving by novices; and to develop and assess techniques for remediating these errors. The meaning theory of learning (ML), procedural learning theory (PL), and implicit structure learning theory (ISL) are alternative frameworks for the explanation of the errors. The ML theory hypothesizes that experts have rich semantic connections to the procedures and symbols of algebra, …

Theoretical And Experimental Modeling Of Removing Contaminants From Soils By An Electric Field., Akram Nimer Alshawabkeh Jan 1994

Theoretical And Experimental Modeling Of Removing Contaminants From Soils By An Electric Field., Akram Nimer Alshawabkeh

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A mathematical model is formulated for multicomponent transport of reactive species under an electric field. A set on differential and algebraic equations is developed for transport of fluid, charge, and species in a saturated soil under coupled hydraulic, electric, and chemical potential gradients. An iterative scheme is chosen in solution of a system of differential and algebraic equations. Six differential equations and four algebraic equations are used to model transport of $Pb\sp{2+}$, $H\sp+$, $OH\sp-$, $NO3\sp-$, the associated chemical reactions, electric potential and the hydraulic head across the electrodes. Finite Element Method is used in space discretization. Finite difference technique is …

Development Of A Body Image Assessment Procedure For Children And Pre-Adolescents., Staci Veron Guidry

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Eating disorders have been researched extensively among adult, and, more recently, among adolescent populations. Body image disturbance is included as a diagnostic criterion for anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa, and has been postulated as a central characteristic of the eating disorders. Researchers have identified eating disorders among prepubertal children; therefore, there is a need for the development of reliable and valid measures of eating disorders and body image in children. In this investigation, a total of 257 children in grades 3 through 7 completed the Children's Eating Attitudes Test, Children's Depression Inventory, Piers-Harris Children's Self Concept Scale physical appearance and …

Evidence For A Role Of Β‐1,3‐Glucanase In Dicot Seed Germination, Regina Vögeli‐Lange, Corinne Fründt, Craig M. Hart, Roland Beffa, Ferenc Nagy, Frederick Meins Jan 1994

Evidence For A Role Of Β‐1,3‐Glucanase In Dicot Seed Germination, Regina Vögeli‐Lange, Corinne Fründt, Craig M. Hart, Roland Beffa, Ferenc Nagy, Frederick Meins

Faculty Publications

Class I β‐1,3‐glucanases are antifungal vacuolar proteins implicated in plant defense that show developmental, hormonal, and pathogenesis‐related regulation. The expression was studied in germinating tobacco seeds of a chimeric β‐glucuronidase (GUS) reporter gene fused to 1.6 kb of the 5′ flanking sequence of the tobacco class I β‐1,3‐glucanase B (GLB) promoter. Histological staining for GUS activity showed that expression of the GLB promoter is highly localized in a specific zone of the endosperm in germinating seeds. The temporal and spatial patterns of GUS and β‐1,3‐glucanase activity found, suggest a novel function for class I β‐1,3‐glucanases during seed germination in a …

Mechanistic Analysis Of Ammonium Inhibition Of Atmospheric Methane Consumption In Forest Soils, S. Schnell, G. M. King Jan 1994

Mechanistic Analysis Of Ammonium Inhibition Of Atmospheric Methane Consumption In Forest Soils, S. Schnell, G. M. King

Faculty Publications

Methane consumption by forest soil was studied in situ and in vitro with respect to responses to nitrogen additions at atmospheric and elevated methane concentrations. Methane concentrations in intact soil decreased continuously from atmospheric levels at the surface to 0.5 ppm at a depth of 14 cm. The consumption rate of atmospheric methane in soils, however, was highest in the 4- to 8-cm depth interval (2.9 nmol per g of dry soil per day), with much lower activities below and above this zone. In contrast, extractable ammonium and nitrate concentrations were highest in the surface layer (0 to 2 cm; …

Ammonium And Nitrite Inhibition Of Methane Oxidation By Methylobacter Albus Bg8 And Methylosinus Trichosporium Ob3b At Low Methane Concentrations, G. M. King, S. Schnell Jan 1994

Ammonium And Nitrite Inhibition Of Methane Oxidation By Methylobacter Albus Bg8 And Methylosinus Trichosporium Ob3b At Low Methane Concentrations, G. M. King, S. Schnell

Faculty Publications

Methane oxidation by pure cultures of the methanotrophs Methylobacter albus BG8 and Methylosinus trichosporium OB3b was inhibited by ammonium choride and sodium nitrite relative to that in cultures assayed in either nitrate-containing or nitrate-free medium. M. albus was generally more sensitive to ammonium and nitrite than M. trichosporium. Both species produced nitrite from ammonium; the concentrations of nitrite produced increased with increasing methane concentrations in the culture headspaces. Inhibition of methane oxidation by nitrite was inversely proportional to headspace methane concentrations, with only minimal effects observed at concentrations of >500 ppm in the presence of 250 μM nitrite. Inhibition increased …

Faculty Publications

The regulatory enzyme aspartate transcarbamoylase (ATCase), comprising 2 catalytic (C) trimers and 3 regulatory (R) dimers, owes its stability to the manifold interchain interactions among the 12 polypeptide chains. With the availability of a recombinant 70‐amino acid zinc‐containing polypeptide fragment of the regulatory chain of ATCase, it has become possible to analyze directly the interaction between catalytic and regulatory chains in a complex of simpler structure independent of other interactions such as those between the 2 C trimers, which also contribute to the stability of the holoenzyme. Also, the effect of the interaction between the polypeptide, termed the zinc domain, …

Diffuse galactic continuum γ-ray emission in the 0.75-30 MeV range from the inner Galaxy has been studied using data from COMPTEL on the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory. Observations of the inner Galaxy from the Sky Survey have been used. The imaging properties of COMPTEL enable spatial analysis of the γ-ray distribution using model fitting. A model based on atomic and molecular gas distributions in the Galaxy has been used to derive the emissivity spectrum of the γ-ray emission and this spectrum is compared with theoretical estimates of bremsstrahlung emission from cosmic-ray electrons.

Natural radiative lifetimes of the states in the highly perturbed 5d10np 2P sequence in neutral gold, Au i, for n=69, as well as of four of the perturbing 5d96s6p 2P states, have been measured. This was done by direct excitation from the ground state with short-pulse vacuum-ultraviolet laser light and time-resolved detection of the laser-induced fluorescence. We found the lifetimes to be (6p 2P1/2)=6.2(2) ns, (6p 2P3/2)=4.7(2) ns, (7p 2P1/2)=6.4(7) ns, (7p 2P3/2)=5.3(7) ns, (8p 2P1/2)=63(3) ns, (8p 2P3/2)=24(2) ns, (9p 2P1/2)=28(2) ns, and (9p 2P3/2)=75(4) ns. For the perturbing states (two states of each term have been observed) we …

Glacial till, glaciomarine diamictites, and ice-rafted detritus found in marine cores collected off the shore of southeast Greenland record multiple Late Cenozoic glaciations beginning in the Late Miocene. Distinct rock assemblages and seismic stratigraphic control correlate the diamictites with glaciation of the southeast Greenland margin. Glaciers advanced to the sea during several intervals in the Pliocene and Pleistocene. North Atlantic glaciation may have nucleated in southern Greenland rather than further north because of the high mountains and the high levels of precipitation in this region.
