DNase I hypersensitive site 2 (HS 2) of the human β-globin Locus Control Region (LCR) directs high level expression of the β-globin gene located 50 kilobases downstream. Experiments in cultured cells and in transgenic mice demonstrate that duplicated AP1-like sites in HS 2 are required for this powerful enhancer activity. A cDNA clone encoding a basic, leucine-zipper protein that binds to these sites was isolated and designated Locus Control Region-Factor 1 (LCR-F1). This protein is a member of a new family of regulatory factors that contain a 63 amino acid 'CNC domain' overlapping the basic region. This domain is approximately …

In this paper we study connections between flows and left congruences on the universal flow. It is shown that in the case of minimal flows such congruences admit a factorization in which the factors correspond to distal and proximal properties of the flow. © 1994.

A Dag Based Wormhole Routing Strategy, John Roy May 1994

A Dag Based Wormhole Routing Strategy, John Roy

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The wormhole routing (WR) technique is replacing the hitherto popular storeand- forward routing in message passing multicomputers. This is because the latter has speed and node size constraints. The wormhole routing is, on the other hand, susceptible to deadlock. A few WR schemes suggested recently in the literature, concentrate on avoiding deadlock. This thesis presents a Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG) based WR technique. At low traffic levels the proposed method follows a minimal path. But the routing is adaptive at higher traffic levels. We prove that the algorithm is deadlock-free. This method is compared for its performance with a deterministic …

Cotton Response To Mepiquat Chloride Applications After Early Season Square Loss, Donald R. Cook May 1994

Cotton Response To Mepiquat Chloride Applications After Early Season Square Loss, Donald R. Cook

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Mepiquat chloride, a plant growth regulator used in cotton (Gossvpium hirsutum L.) production, controls vegetative growth and improves boil set on lower fruiting branches. This response could either enhance or reduce problems associated with early square loss. The objective of this study was to determine the relationship between early square loss and mepiquat chloride on vegetative and reproductive growth of cotton. The cultivar, Deltapine 50, was planted at tvjo locations in 1992. Three levels of square removal (SR) (0%, 20%, or 40% of all squares 10-14 days after pin head square) and three rates of Mepiquat chloride (MC) {0, 4 …

Rodent Bc1 Rna Gene As A Master Gene For Id Element Amplification, Joomyeong Kim, John A. Martignetti, M. Richard Shen, Jürgen Brosius, Prescott Deininger

Faculty Publications

ID elements are short interspersed repetitive DNA elements (SINEs) which have amplified in rodent genomes via retroposition, a process involving an RNA intermediate. BC1, an abundant ID-related transcript, is transcribed from a conserved, single-copy gene in rodents. The gene encoding BC1 RNA represents one of the earliest and possibly the first ID-containing sequence. Comparison of consensus sequences of each rodent ID with its corresponding BC1 RNA gene showed that the variations of BC1 RNA within rodents corresponded to specific changes within the ID consensus sequence for each rodent species. This supports the hypothesis that the BC1 gene is a master …

Coastal Eutrophication Near The Mississippi River Delta, R. Eugene Turner, Nancy Rabalais Apr 1994

Coastal Eutrophication Near The Mississippi River Delta, R. Eugene Turner, Nancy Rabalais

Faculty Publications

CHANGES in delivery of river-borne nutrients such as dissolved phosphate, nitrate and silicate, owing to land-use changes and anthropogenic emissions, are known to result in eutrophication1— enhanced phytoplankton blooms—and more severe hypoxic events2–1 in many enclosed bays and seas. Although similar ecological effects might be expected on continental shelves, the occurrence of such eutrophication has remained unresolved5. Here we present evidence of eutrophication of the continental shelf near the outflow of the Mississippi river, obtained by quantifying biologically bound silica (BSi) in diatom remnants within dated sediment cores. BSi accumulation rates are greatest in water depths of 20 to 50 …

Multiple Elements In Human Β-Globin Locus Control Region 5′ Hs 2 Are Involved In Enhancer Activity And Position Independent, Transgene Expression, John J. Caterina, Dominic J. Ciavatta, David Donze, Richard R. Behringer, Tim M. Townes Mar 1994

Multiple Elements In Human Β-Globin Locus Control Region 5′ Hs 2 Are Involved In Enhancer Activity And Position Independent, Transgene Expression, John J. Caterina, Dominic J. Ciavatta, David Donze, Richard R. Behringer, Tim M. Townes

Faculty Publications

The human β-globin Locus Control Region (LCR) has two important activities. First, the LCR opens a 200 kb chromosomal domain containing the human ε-, γ- and β-giobin genes and, secondly, these sequences function as a powerful enhancer of ε-, γ- and β-globin gene expression. Erythrold-specific, DNase I hypersensitive sites (HS) mark sequences that are critical for LCR activity. Previous experiments demonstrated that a 1.9 kb fragment containing the 5′ HS 2 site confers position-independent expression in transgenic mice and enhances human β-giobin gene expression 100-fold. Further analysis of this region demonstrates that multiple sequences are required for maximal enhancer activity; …
