The Effects Of Departures From Prior Return Measures On Individual Taxpayer Frame And Tax Reporting Decisions., Phyllis V. Copeland Jan 1995

The Effects Of Departures From Prior Return Measures On Individual Taxpayer Frame And Tax Reporting Decisions., Phyllis V. Copeland

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The individual tax compliance gap persists despite costly enforcement efforts that attempt to dissuade noncompliance by identifying noncompliant taxpayers and imposing sanctions on those identified. Enforcement strategies that reduce the psychological incentives of noncompliance may complement the dissuasive approach. The present study probes this psychological alternative by examining several factors that are potential determinants of how taxpayers perceive their tax return results, and accordingly, how much reporting risk they are willing to assume. Noncompliance is modelled as a two-tier process. The first relies on adaptation level theory that suggests taxpayers frame the filing of their current year tax returns with …

Brahms's Fugal Sonata Finales., Audrey O'Boyle Cosgrove Jan 1995

Brahms's Fugal Sonata Finales., Audrey O'Boyle Cosgrove

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The final movements of Brahms's Cello Sonata in E Minor, Op. 38 and String Quintet in F Major, Op. 88 epitomize Tovey's description of Brahms's style, "from the outset almost evenly balanced between the most dramatic sonata form and the highest polyphony," in combining fugue with sonata form. Although previous authors have discussed Brahms's treatment of various genres, and there are multiple studies of individual movements of Brahms's chamber music, there has been no specific genre study of Brahms's fugal sonata movements. These two movements represent a unique and important aspect of Brahms's music in that they most explicitly illustrate …

East Meets West In Enescu's Second Sonata For Piano And Violin, Op. 6., Vladimir Laurentiu Hirsu Jan 1995

East Meets West In Enescu's Second Sonata For Piano And Violin, Op. 6., Vladimir Laurentiu Hirsu

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The music of George Enescu (1881-1955) is today associated primarily with the world of violin playing. Much like his famous predecessors--Corelli, Vivaldi, Paganini, Spohr--Enescu also left behind an impressive number of compositions. But unlike those of his predecessors, Enescu's compositions are virtually unknown in the West. The lack of scores, the lack of literature in English or any other western European language, and also the critics' inability to place his music in any of the known compositional schools, contributed to an almost total neglect of his music. This paper attempts to shed some light on one of Enescu's early chamber …

Valuation Of Index Options., Bruce Kelvin Grace Jan 1995

Valuation Of Index Options., Bruce Kelvin Grace

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation examines the valuation of index options. The first chapter analyzes the value of early exercise for an index option, specifically the Standard and Poor's 100 Index (OEX) option. The value is found by estimating European put-call parity and comparing it to the price difference between an American call and put. Zivney (1991) estimated this value for closing prices. The value of early exercise is re-estimated by using bid-ask prices, effectively mitigating the non-synchronous data problem, which may be severe in Zivney's study. The results from using intraday bid-ask prices are compared to last bid-ask and transaction prices. The …

Myoglobin And Lipid Stability Of Meat And Liposome Model Systems With Modified Atmosphere Packaging., Nai-Yun Huang

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The influences of lipid peroxidation and pigment autoxidation in beef and liposome model systems were examined in modified atmosphere packaging containing oxygen (O$\sb2).$ Ground beef of 75 and 90% lean were packaged in 80% nitrogen (N$\sb2){:}20\%$ carbon dioxide (C$\sb2)$ for distribution and storage atmospheres were exchanged for 80% $\rm O\sb2{:}20\%\ CO\sb2$ at 15, 18, 20, 22, 25, 27 or 29 days postpackaging before retail display. On the same postpackaging day, samples from longer gas exchange, but shorter display times had lower lipid oxidation, psychrotrophic growth, metmyoglobin formation, discoloration and odor scores when compared with samples from shorter gas exchange times …

Twentieth Century Music For Unaccompanied Trumpet: An Annotated Bibliography., Timothy Wayne Justus Jan 1995

Twentieth Century Music For Unaccompanied Trumpet: An Annotated Bibliography., Timothy Wayne Justus

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In keeping with traditions of composition for solo instruments, composers of the twentieth-century have written many pieces for unaccompanied trumpet. There is, however, no listing or guide to the nature and difficulty of this literature available to the trumpet teacher or performer. This bibliography is intended to fill that need. Each bibliographical entry is listed alphabetically by composer's last name. Introductory data describe the range, duration, and instrument specified for the composition, and the tessitura and level of difficulty. Biographical information about the composers is followed by an annotation providing the trumpet player or teacher with technical information about each …

A Comparison Of Ecological Factors Affecting Two Species Of Lotic Molluscs., Paul David Johnson Jan 1995

A Comparison Of Ecological Factors Affecting Two Species Of Lotic Molluscs., Paul David Johnson

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study examined habitat-mediated differences in the population structure of two species of stream molluscs, the Louisiana pearl-shell mussel, Margaritifera hembeli, a protected species, and Elimia semicarinata, a pleurocerid gastropod. In 1991 I located Margaritifera hembeli in a drainage system where it was previously unknown, and describe here the distribution of M. hembeli in the Bayou Rigolette drainage in Grant Parish, Louisiana. The mussel was limited to small second- and third-order lotic systems. Of several physicochemical and habitat parameters, specific conductance, Ca$\sp{+2}$ concentration, sediment particle size, sediment compaction and channel width were most important in explaining abundance. Substratum stability was …

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Studies were conducted to determine the effectiveness of Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) insecticides and transgenic Bt cotton in controlling the bollworm (BW), Helicoverpa zea (Boddie) and tobacco budworm (TBW), Heliothis virescens (F.), complex. Laboratory tests indicated that rates $\ge$1.17 liters (form)/ha caused TBW mortality significantly higher than the untreated control 2 hours after treatment (HAT). Dipel ES$\sp\circler$ at 4.68 liters (form)/ha and Condor OF$\sp\circler \ge$ 0.58 liters (form)/ha caused significantly higher TBW mortality than the untreated control at 72 HAT. TBW mortality levels did not significantly increase as Dipel ES$\sp\circler$ or Condor OF$\sp\circler$ dosage rates increased. Results of a persistence study …

An Integrated Model Of Job Satisfaction., Mark Stephen Nagy Jan 1995

An Integrated Model Of Job Satisfaction., Mark Stephen Nagy

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A model of job satisfaction is proposed that integrates the components of discrepancy, equity, need, value and valence theories using a control theory framework. Data was collected from 341 full-time employees from a variety of organizations. The results indicated support for the proposed model. The results illustrated that discrepancies are largely involved in both facet and global evaluations of job satisfaction and that the interaction of discrepancies and importance is instrumental in explaining global satisfaction. The results also demonstrated that comparison others are involved in the evaluation of job satisfaction and that different comparison others are associated with present and …

On The Relationship Between Representation Equivalence And Isomorphism Of Fundamental Groups Of Three-Step Nilmanifolds., Colathur Raja Vijayan Jan 1995

On The Relationship Between Representation Equivalence And Isomorphism Of Fundamental Groups Of Three-Step Nilmanifolds., Colathur Raja Vijayan

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation arose from efforts to investigate an example which appeared in (G) of a phenomenon which has been considered to be rare: namely, the existence of two discrete cocompact subgroups $\Gamma\sb1$ and $\Gamma\sb2$ in a Lie group G such that $\Gamma\sb1/G$ and $\Gamma\sb2/G$ have the same (unitary) spectrum but $\Gamma\sb1$ is not isomorphic to $\Gamma\sb2.$ This phenomenon may be called representation equivalence of $\Gamma\sb1$ and $\Gamma\sb2$ with $\Gamma\sb1$ non-isomorphic to $\Gamma\sb2.$. In (G) the first known example of this phenomenon in the class of solvable Lie groups was given. In this example G was a specific three-step nilpotent Lie …

Popular Theatre In Eighteenth- And Nineteenth-Century Vienna: Stage Characters And Performance Sites., Gregory John Dykhouse Jan 1995

Popular Theatre In Eighteenth- And Nineteenth-Century Vienna: Stage Characters And Performance Sites., Gregory John Dykhouse

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation pursues a relationship between the changing venues of the Viennese popular theatrical tradition, or Wiener Komodie, and the evolution of the comic figure from the performances of Josef Anton Stranitzky (1676-1726) to Johann Nestroy (1801-1862). This study follows a procedure of reconstructing the major venues associated with the Viennese comic tradition and analyzing the changes in the depiction of the comic character as they relate to the changes in the venues. This presentation of Viennese performance sites and stage characters ultimately explores the relationship between physical space (object of material culture, such as a purpose-built theatre) and theatrical …

Alu elements are a family of interspersed repeats that have mobilized throughout primate genomes by retroposition from a few 'master' genes. Among the 500,000 Alu elements in the human genome are members of the human- specific subfamily that are not fixed in the human species; that is, not all chromosomes carry an Alu element at a particular locus. Four such polymorphic human-specific Alu insertions were analyzed by a rapid, PCR-based assay that uses primers that flank the insertion point to determine genotypes based on the presence or absence of the Alu element. These four polymorphic Alu insertions were shown to …

A Preliminary Mass Balance Model Of Primary Productivity And Dissolved Oxygen In The Mississippi River Plume/Inner Gulf Shelf Region, Victor J. Bierman Jr., Scott C. Hinz, William J. Wiseman Jr., Nancy N. Rabalais, R. Eugene Turner Dec 1994

A Preliminary Mass Balance Model Of Primary Productivity And Dissolved Oxygen In The Mississippi River Plume/Inner Gulf Shelf Region, Victor J. Bierman Jr., Scott C. Hinz, William J. Wiseman Jr., Nancy N. Rabalais, R. Eugene Turner

Faculty Publications

A deterministic, mass balance model for phytoplankton, nutrients, and dissolved oxygen was applied to the Mississippi River Plume/Inner Gulf Shelf (MRP/IGS) region. The model was calibrated to a comprehensive set of field data collected during July 1990 at over 200 sampling stations in the northern Gulf of Mexico. The spatial domain of the model is represented by a three-dimensional, 21-segment water-column .grid extending from the Mississippi River Delta west to the Louisiana-Texas border, and from the shoreline seaward to the 30-60 m bathymetric contours. Diagnostic analyses and numerical experiments were conducted with the calibrated model to better understand the environmental …

Comparison Of Continuous Records Of Near-Bottom Dissolved Oxygen From The Hypoxia Zone Along The Louisiana Coast, Nancy N. Rabalais, William J. Wiseman, R. Eugene Turner Dec 1994

Comparison Of Continuous Records Of Near-Bottom Dissolved Oxygen From The Hypoxia Zone Along The Louisiana Coast, Nancy N. Rabalais, William J. Wiseman, R. Eugene Turner

Faculty Publications

Oxygen depletion is a seasonally dominant feature of the lower water column on the highly-stratified, riverine-influenced continental shelf of Louisiana. The areal extent of hypoxia (bottom waters ≤2 mg l−1 dissolved oxygen) in mid-summer may encompass up to 9,500 km2, from the Mississippi River delta to the upper Texas coast, with the spatial configuration of the zone varying interannually. We placed two continuously recording oxygen meters (Endeco 1184) within 1 m of the seabed in 20-m water depth at two locations 77 km apart where we previously documented midsummer bottom water hypoxia. The oxygen meters recorded considerably different oxygen conditions …

Ecological Impacts Of Historic And Prehistoric Hurricanes On Horn Island, Mississippi, Kari Gathen Dec 1994

Ecological Impacts Of Historic And Prehistoric Hurricanes On Horn Island, Mississippi, Kari Gathen

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Hurricanes play an important role in the ecology and geomorphology of the northern Gulf of Mexico coast. In order to study the impact of hurricanes on barrier island vegetation, the sedimentary and fossil pollen records taken from cores in three ponds on Horn Island, Mississippi were examined to establish a record of ecological and geomorphological disturbance on Horn Island. Surface samples taken from the bottom of 15 ponds and 3 lagoons, delineated as fresh or brackish according to salinity test results, provide the modern vegetational analog to compare with the fossil pollen record using a discriminant analysis. Discriminant analysis results …

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This thesis is an attempt to systematically capture a large body of ephemeral data produced in the course of a controversy within the American Library Association regarding censorship and other human rights violations in the Israeli Occupied Territories. The focus of the study is the resolution passed by the ALA Council at its annual conference in 1992, then revoked at the next annual conference. The questions guiding this study are: What happened during the controversy? Why? The major result of this study is a select bibliography, arranged chronologically, beginning in 1945, consisting of over 1200 entries: letters, memos, broadsides, minutes …

Habitat Use, Movement, And Production Ecology Of The Crayfish Procambarus Vioscai, Christopher David Barcza Dec 1994

Habitat Use, Movement, And Production Ecology Of The Crayfish Procambarus Vioscai, Christopher David Barcza

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

I conducted three studies during the year of 1993 in order to investigate the ecology of the crayfish Procambarus vioscai in the streams of the Kisatchie National Forest. The first study was designed to determine the factors that effect the microdistribution of this crayfish. A direct and positive relationship between the variation in leaf accumulation and crayfish biomass in a location was observed in the study streams. Laboratory observations of the behavior of the crayfish associated with leaf litter and a regression model for structure volume versus crayfish biomass indicated that exploitation of leaf accumulations by P. vioscai is a …

Energy flows in deep inelastic electron-proton scattering are investigated at a centre-of-mass energy of 269 GeV for the range Q2 ≥ 10 GeV2 using the ZEUS detector. A comparison is made between events with and without a large rapidity gap between the hadronic system and the proton direction. The energy flows, corrected for detector acceptance and resolution, are shown for these two classes of events in both the HERA laboratory frame and the Breit frame. From the differences in the shapes of these energy flows we conclude that QCD radiation is suppressed in the large-rapidity-gap eents compared to the events …

Comparison Of The S Genes And The Biological Properties Of Respiratory And Enteropathogenic Bovine Coronaviruses, X. Zhang, W. Herbst, K. G. Kousoulas, J. Storz

Faculty Publications

The nucleotide sequence of the S gene of the bovine respiratory coronavirus (BRCV) strain G95, which was isolated from nasal swabs of a calf suffering from respiratory disorders, was determined and compared with the S gene of the enteropathogenic bovine coronavirus (BECV) strain LY138. Sequence analysis revealed 98.7% nucleotide and 98.3% deduced amino acid identities between the S genes of BRCV-G95 and BECV-LY138 without any deletions or insertions. Nucleotide substitutions were distributed randomly throughout the gene. Five monoclonal antibodies specific for the S protein distinguished BRCV-G95 from BECV-L9, but failed to differentiate it from BECV-LY138 in Western blots under denatured …

Global Arrest Of Translation During Invertebrate Quiescence, Gretchen E. Hofmann, Steven C. Hand Aug 1994

Global Arrest Of Translation During Invertebrate Quiescence, Gretchen E. Hofmann, Steven C. Hand

Faculty Publications

Comparing the translational capacities of cell-free systems from aerobically developing embryos of the brine shrimp Artemia franciscana vs. quiescent embryos has revealed a global arrest of protein synthesis. Incorporation rates of [3H]leucine by lysates from 4-h anoxic embryos were 8% of those from aerobic (control) embryos, when assayed at the respective pH values measured for each treatment in vivo. Exposure of embryos to 4 h of aerobic acidosis (elevated CO2 in the presence of oxygen) suppressed protein synthesis to 3% of control values. These latter two experimental treatments promote developmental arrest of Artemia embryos and, concomitantly, cause acute declines in …
