Robust Adaptive Control In H(Infinity)., Gisoon Kim Jan 1995

Robust Adaptive Control In H(Infinity)., Gisoon Kim

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation addresses the problem of unifying identification and control in the paradigm of ${\cal H}\sb\infty$ to achieve robust adaptive control. To achieve robust adaptive control, we employ the same approach used for identification in ${\cal H}\sb\infty$ and robust control in ${\cal H}\sb\infty.$ In the modeling part, we aim not only to identify the nominal plant, but also to quantify the modeling error in ${\cal H}\sb\infty$ norm. The linear algorithm based on least-squares is used, and the upper bounds for the corresponding modeling error are derived. In the control part, we aim to achieve the performance specification in frequency domain …

Gas Kick Behavior During Bullheading Operations In Vertical Wells., William Leo Koederitz Jan 1995

Gas Kick Behavior During Bullheading Operations In Vertical Wells., William Leo Koederitz

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

An experimental study to investigate the bullheading method of well control was performed. The primary focus of the investigation was the downward displacement of gas by liquid, requiring consideration of counter-current flow behavior. Experiments were conducted in a full-scale well, using a computer-controlled downhole fracture simulation system; water and low-viscosity drilling mud were used for bullheading fluids. The results from these experiments provided simple models for the estimation of removal efficiency and maximum pump pressure during bullheading operations. These models are empirical and are limited to conditions within the range of the experimental data. A two-phase flow analysis of the …

The Effect Of Developmental Factors On The Use Of An Electronic Communication Device., Judith Danute Oxley Jan 1995

The Effect Of Developmental Factors On The Use Of An Electronic Communication Device., Judith Danute Oxley

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study addressed a poorly understood variable of voice output communication aid (VOCA) use, namely mnemonic development. Forty children without disabilities, aged from 49 to 60 months, were required to use an IntroTalker (Prentke Romich Company) to participate in a one-on-one storybook reading task with the investigator. They were provided with sixteen messages to use during a scripted reading of The Three Bears. Children could use a trained verbal elaboration strategy or generate their own methods to retrieve messages. Immediate and delayed responses of children under two training methods were compared, and the contribution of developmental factors, including metamemory, were …

The Socialization Of Beginning Principals In Louisiana: Organizational Constraints On Innovation., Scott Martin Norton Jan 1995

The Socialization Of Beginning Principals In Louisiana: Organizational Constraints On Innovation., Scott Martin Norton

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study was to examine the organizational socialization experiences of beginning principals. This study approached the problem through a mixed methodology strategy of research, using both quantitative and qualitative techniques. A factor analysis of 187 responses to a socialization survey instrument resulted in three components of socialization which were used as the dependent variables in the study. Variation was found in the principals' socialization level, but this variation was not predicted by any of the independent variables. For the dependent variable vision, African-American principals reported higher mean scores than white principals; also, principals in elementary schools showed …

Multiresolution Techniques In Image Processing., Ramana L. Rao Jan 1995

Multiresolution Techniques In Image Processing., Ramana L. Rao

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Multiresolution, an effective paradigm for signal processing, offers a natural, hierarchical view of information. As a computational tool, multiresolution can be applied to a variety of problems in signal and image processing. For instance, feature detection and extraction can be performed quickly and efficiently using a multiresolutional method to analyze images. This dissertation addresses the problems of segmentation and edge detection in images with particular emphasis on satellite images which display features of a fine nature, such as the Atlantic Gulf Stream. The dissertation also describes a portable toolkit, for conventional and multiresolutional image processing, that was developed to test …

Estimation Of Genetic Parameters For Preweaning Growth Traits Of Crossbred Cattle., Denis Jose Salgado-Fonseca Jan 1995

Estimation Of Genetic Parameters For Preweaning Growth Traits Of Crossbred Cattle., Denis Jose Salgado-Fonseca

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Data from a long-term rotational crossbreeding study involving Angus, Brahman, Charolais and Hereford cattle were analyzed to evaluate the importance of maternal effects on birth weight (BWT), weaning weight (WWT) and preweaning average daily gain (ADG) and, to estimate genetic parameters. Six different animal models were fitted for each trait, ranging from a single additive to a maternal animal model allowing for both genetic and environmental maternal effects and a genetic covariance between direct and maternal additive effects. Genetic effects were obtained using a maternal animal model allowing for a maternal additive effect and a direct-maternal additive covariance (Model 4). …

The Production Of Triploid Oyster Larvae (Crassostrea Virginica (Gmelin)) In Louisiana., John Eric Supan Jan 1995

The Production Of Triploid Oyster Larvae (Crassostrea Virginica (Gmelin)) In Louisiana., John Eric Supan

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Gonadal recycling of oyster broodstock, salinity effects during induction, and cytochalasin B (CB) dosage were investigated as factors affecting the production of triploid oyster larvae in Louisiana. These factors were studied at an oyster hatchery on Grand Isle, LA during 1992-1994 to help transfer triploid oyster technology to the Gulf region. Oyster broodstock were held nearshore in Caminada Bay, Louisiana and histologically analyzed between induced spawnings and during the winter of 1992-1993. Gametogenesis was analyzed qualitatively by developmental staging and quantitatively using mean gonad/body ratios (GBR) per section. The monthly percent occurrence of the developmental stages, as well as histological …

The Pueblo Region As A Linguistic Area: Diffusion Among The Indigenous Languages Of The Southwest United States., Catherine Bereznak Jan 1995

The Pueblo Region As A Linguistic Area: Diffusion Among The Indigenous Languages Of The Southwest United States., Catherine Bereznak

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The goal of this dissertation is to investigate whether the Pueblo region of the Southwest United States is a legitimate linguistic area (LA). The Pueblo region has long been recognized as a cohesive culture area, but an in-depth examination of the Pueblo region as a linguistic area has not previously been done. Because a linguistic area is by definition an area in which linguistic features have spread through diffusion, traits which are widespread for other reasons (e.g., genetic inheritance or independent parallel development) must be eliminated as evidence for a Pueblo LA. The methodological approach which I adopt emphasizes the …

Derivative Securities In Germany: An Examination Of The Price Discovery And Extreme Value Processes., John Paul Broussard Jan 1995

Derivative Securities In Germany: An Examination Of The Price Discovery And Extreme Value Processes., John Paul Broussard

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation examines the price discovery and extreme value processes found in Germany's stock index and stock index futures markets. These two concepts are framed within the fundamental relationship between risk and return found in the financial economics literature. Results from the price discovery analysis indicate that the stock index futures market processes information more quickly than the underlying spot market. However, this processing can be characterized by a feedback loop because sometimes the spot market processes information more quickly than the futures market. An indepth analysis of the information processing relationship implies that the futures market processes information faster …

Modeling The Antecedents Of Compulsive Buying., Leslie K. Cole Jan 1995

Modeling The Antecedents Of Compulsive Buying., Leslie K. Cole

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Interest in dysfunctional consumption behaviors, such as compulsive buying, is a fairly recent development in the marketing literature. The purpose of this dissertation was to develop and test a theoretical model of the structural relationships among potential antecedents of compulsive buying behavior. In this dissertation, an extensive literature review identified several key constructs in the development of compulsive buying. These constructs include a family environment factor (parental influence), obsessive-compulsive trait, trait self-esteem, generalized anxiety, impulsive behavior, and anxiety reduction through shopping motivations. Seven studies were performed, including pretest and final studies with national non-student samples. Using LISREL, a structural model …

An Introduction To The Songs Of Felix Wolfes (1892-1971) With Complete Chronological Catalogue., Viola R. Dacus Jan 1995

An Introduction To The Songs Of Felix Wolfes (1892-1971) With Complete Chronological Catalogue., Viola R. Dacus

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The German-born composer and conductor Felix Wolfes (1892-1971) left a substantial legacy of over two hundred inspired and finely crafted songs. These works have earned him a place among his self-proclaimed ancestors, Brahms, Wolf, Strauss, Mussorgsky, and his teachers, Reger and Pfitzner. Unfortunately, both the composer and his works remain virtually unknown today. Wolfes's output as a composer consists almost entirely of German lieder. His style is strongly rooted in the Romantic tradition of earlier lieder composers, but Wolfes did more than merely imitate his predecessors. While the majority of his output suggests a conservative post-tonal idiom, he frequently stretched …

Louisiana's Cajun Prairie: Holocene History Of A Southern Grassland., Miriam Lee Fearn Jan 1995

Louisiana's Cajun Prairie: Holocene History Of A Southern Grassland., Miriam Lee Fearn

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Pollen, phytolith, charcoal, and diatom analysis, in conjunction with sediment stratigraphy and radiocarbon dating, of sediment cores from Lake Arthur and Prien Lake, estuaries in southwestern Louisiana, provide 6000 years of data used to reconstruct the late-Holocene vegetation history of Louisiana's natural prairie and to define coastal processes which affected the sites. The Cajun Prairie is a grassland outlier in a climate which normally supports forest. Poorly drained, impermeable soils with poor water yielding capability induce summer drought severe enough to limit the success of trees, resulting in a natural tallgrass prairie. Pollen, phytoliths, and charcoal suggest that the grassland …

Intraspecific Variation In Salt Tolerance In Panicum Hemitomon, Spartina Patens, And Spartina Alterniflora: Population Differentiation And Investigations Of Underlying Factors., Mark Warner Hester Jan 1995

Intraspecific Variation In Salt Tolerance In Panicum Hemitomon, Spartina Patens, And Spartina Alterniflora: Population Differentiation And Investigations Of Underlying Factors., Mark Warner Hester

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Although it is known that wetland plant species exhibit considerable interspecific variation in salt tolerance across coastal plant communities, very little is known concerning the amount of intraspecific variation in salt tolerance within plant species. Panicum hemitomon, Spartina patens and Spartina alterniflora are dominant emergent macrophytes of fresh, brackish and salt marshes, respectively. To investigate intraspecific variation in salt tolerance, plant material was collected from Gulf Coast populations of each of these species and subjected to a salinity screening protocol. All three of the plant species displayed significant intraspecific variation in lethal salinity level and plant morphology. Lethal salinity levels …

Text And Context Of The Suwo': Bribri Oral Tradition., Carla Victoria Jara Jan 1995

Text And Context Of The Suwo': Bribri Oral Tradition., Carla Victoria Jara

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation comprises the analysis of six extensive texts in Bribri, a Chibchan language spoken in Costa Rica, Central America. The theoretical framework is based mainly on M.A.K. Halliday and Ruqaiya Hasan's social-semiotic perspective of text analysis and on Joseph Grimes' analysis of discourse. In order to characterize this genre within its context of discourse, the three components of context, i.e., field, tenor and mode, have been defined for the corpus of texts. To determine how texture and structure, the basic properties of text, are displayed, one text is analyzed in detail and the results are compared with the other …

Wiretapping And National Security: Nixon, The Mitchell Doctrine, And The White Panthers. Volume I., Jeff A. Hale Jan 1995

Wiretapping And National Security: Nixon, The Mitchell Doctrine, And The White Panthers. Volume I., Jeff A. Hale

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation discusses a modern version of a constitutional struggle which has characterized American democracy since the first days of the Republic: the citizen's right to privacy versus the Government's need to guarantee "national security." It addresses the Supreme Court's landmark Fourth Amendment wiretapping decision of June 1972, U.S. v. U.S. District Court, which ruled unconstitutional the so-called "Mitchell Doctrine", the Nixon Administration's attempt to gain Judicial sanction for "national security" wiretaps without prior court order of suspected "domestic subversive" groups. In its unanimous Keith decision, the Court upheld the "primacy of warrants" in domestic intelligence investigations. Keith remains the …

Combinatorial Design And Analysis Of Optimal Multiple Bus Systems For Parallel Algorithms., Priyalal D. Kulasinghe Jan 1995

Combinatorial Design And Analysis Of Optimal Multiple Bus Systems For Parallel Algorithms., Priyalal D. Kulasinghe

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation develops a formal and systematic methodology for designing optimal, synchronous multiple bus systems (MBSs) realizing given (classes of) parallel algorithms. Our approach utilizes graph and group theoretic concepts to develop the necessary model and procedural tools. By partitioning the vertex set of the graphical representation CFG of the algorithm, we extract a set of interconnection functions that represents the interprocessor communication requirement of the algorithm. We prove that the optimal partitioning problem is NP-Hard. However, we show how to obtain polynomial time solutions by exploiting certain regularities present in many well-behaved parallel algorithms. The extracted set of interconnection …

Truncated Icosahedral Gravitational Wave Antenna., Stephen Michael Merkowitz Jan 1995

Truncated Icosahedral Gravitational Wave Antenna., Stephen Michael Merkowitz

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A spherical gravitational wave detector can be equally sensitive to a wave from any direction, and also able to measure its direction and polarization. We derive a set of equations to describe the mechanics of a spherical antenna coupled to an arbitrary number of attached mechanical resonators. A special arrangement of 6 resonators is proposed, which we term a Truncated Icosahedral Gravitational Wave Antenna, or TIGA. An analytic solution to the equations of motion is found for this case. We find that direct deconvolution of the gravitational tensor components can be accomplished with a specified set of linear combinations of …

An Approach To The Musical Analysis Of Wind Band Literature Based On Analytical Modes Used By Wind Band Specialists And Music Theorists., Jerome Raymond Markoch Jr Jan 1995

An Approach To The Musical Analysis Of Wind Band Literature Based On Analytical Modes Used By Wind Band Specialists And Music Theorists., Jerome Raymond Markoch Jr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study was to construct a method of musical analysis based on analytical modes used by theorists and wind-band specialists, and to apply this method to wind-band literature. The study was motivated by the failure of wind-band sources to address the spectrum of musical analysis and ideas practiced in the music theory community. Two bodies of literature were reviewed: (1) wind-band analyses and methods of analysis proposed by conductors and composers, and (2) analytical methodologies described by theorists. The analytical method advocated in this study modified and incorporated methods and ideas espoused by two theorists (Jan LaRue, …

Synthesis Of Benz(F)Tryptophan And Constrained Amino Acid Derivatives As Fluorescence Probes., Guillermo Morales Jan 1995

Synthesis Of Benz(F)Tryptophan And Constrained Amino Acid Derivatives As Fluorescence Probes., Guillermo Morales

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Constrained amino acids and benzannulated analogs of indole were synthesized as potential fluorescence probes of peptide structure. 1-Amino-2-(3-indolyl)-cyclohexane-1-carboxylic acid (W3) is a rotationally-restricted tryptophan analog whose C$\sb\alpha$-C$\sb\beta$ bond is part of a 6-membered ring. Friedel-Crafts reaction between $\alpha$-hydroxycyclohexanone and indole affords 2-(3-indolyl)cyclohexanone which is further converted into its corresponding spirohydantoin derivative via Strecker reaction. Basic hydrolysis of this hydantoin derivative with Ba(OH)$\sb2$ in oxygen-free water at 250$\sp\circ$C in a Parr$\sp\circler$ high pressure bomb afforded the constrained tryptophan analog. N-(t-Boc)piperidine-4-amino-4-carboxylic acid is a constrained Aib analog. Treatment of 4-piperidinone monohydrate hydrochloide with triethyl amine, catalytic amounts of N,N-dimethylamino pyridine and di-tert-butyl …

A Comparison Of Preference Responses Of White And African-American Students To Musical Versus Musical/Visual Stimuli And Their Relationship To Same- And Other Group Attitudes., Steven Joseph Morrison Jan 1995

A Comparison Of Preference Responses Of White And African-American Students To Musical Versus Musical/Visual Stimuli And Their Relationship To Same- And Other Group Attitudes., Steven Joseph Morrison

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

It was the purpose of this study to examine the role of same- and other-group identification in musical preference decision-making and the relationship between preference decisions and attitude-oriented responses to hypothetical social encounters with same- and other-group members. Subjects were African-American (n = 189) and white (n = 280) sixth, seventh and eighth grade music students. To measure musical preference, each subject responded along a 9-point Likert scale to 10 instrumental music excerpts, five performed by African-American jazz artists and five performed by white jazz artists. The examples were presented according to one of three conditions: (1) music only, (2) …

The Molecular And Morphological Systematics Of Subfamily Epidendroideae (Orchidaceae)., Malcolm Ray Neyland Jan 1995

The Molecular And Morphological Systematics Of Subfamily Epidendroideae (Orchidaceae)., Malcolm Ray Neyland

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The current project undertakes the first molecular-based phylogenetic study of subfamily Epidendroideae (Orchidaceae). Approximately 1,200 nucleotide bases (from the 3$\sp\prime$ half of the ndhF chloroplast gene) for 34 orchid taxa, and a lilioid monocot, Clivia miniata, (Amaryllidaceae) were subjected to phylogenetic analysis using parsimony methods. Oryza sativa (Poaceae), a nonlilioid monocot was designated as outgroup. Using unweighted ndhF sequences, the strict consensus cladogram of 531 most-parsimonious trees supports the hypothesis that the large subfamily Epidendroideae is monophyletic, with Listera (Neottieae) as sister. Although subtribal-level relationships in subfamily Epidendroideae ate well resolved in this analysis, tribal-level relationships are resolved poorly. A …

Theoretical Studies Of Sodium Metal Clusters., Melissa R. Prince Jan 1995

Theoretical Studies Of Sodium Metal Clusters., Melissa R. Prince

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Theoretical methods were used to study small sodium metal clusters. The goal was to find a simple way to model the electronic structure in these clusters that can be used to study large sodium clusters. Monte Carlo studies using Feynman's path integral formulation of quantum mechanics with Bose-Einstein statistics were used to study sodium metal clusters whose valence electrons with opposite spins were paired as bosons. Next, non-atom-based Gaussian s orbitals were used in a Hartree-Fock Monte Carlo procedure. Based on these results, standard quantum chemistry programs were used to test the utility of using non-atom-based basis sets made up …

The data were collected in the spring of 1995 and expand upon the findings of Study I. There were essentially three different …

An Examination Of Costs And Per-Pupil Revenues In Special Education With Simulations Designed To Enhance The Equity Of Louisiana's Special Education Financing Program., Alton John Royer Jr Jan 1995

An Examination Of Costs And Per-Pupil Revenues In Special Education With Simulations Designed To Enhance The Equity Of Louisiana's Special Education Financing Program., Alton John Royer Jr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The primary issues this study addressed were special education costs and equity of special education per-pupil revenues among Louisiana's sixty-six school districts. Actual data from 1980 to 1992 were examined and four special education finance models were developed which addressed these issues. Average annual rates of increase in mean per-pupil revenues for regular education and special education were examined to determine the increase in cost of special education versus regular education. Findings indicated special education per-pupil revenues increased at four times the rate of regular education per-pupil revenues for the period examined. Special education per-pupil revenues were examined to determine …

Understanding Families' Definitions And Perspectives Of Family-Centered Early Intervention Programs., Donna E. Dugger Wadsworth Jan 1995

Understanding Families' Definitions And Perspectives Of Family-Centered Early Intervention Programs., Donna E. Dugger Wadsworth

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

While both the federal and Louisiana state infant/toddler legislation and early childhood special education best practices literature of the late eighties and nineties provided impetus for family-centered early intervention, neither provided specific guidelines on how professionals were to implement the same. In order for early interventionists to provide effective services to individual families they must be able to evaluate and understand how each family they served defined an individualized family service plan as being family centered. This qualitative study extended the knowledge and constructed an understanding of how select families in the Acadiana area, whose children were Part H eligible, …

A Precarious And Uncertain Liberalism: Lyndon Johnson And The New Economics., Charles David Shreve Jan 1995

A Precarious And Uncertain Liberalism: Lyndon Johnson And The New Economics., Charles David Shreve

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study traces the origins and evolution of Lyndon Johnson's approach to political economics and the history of related economic policy making during the Johnson presidential years. His populist roots, experience as a liberal legislator from a conservative state in a conservative era, and the maturation of his ideology and economic philosophy--alongside the Keynesian advisers of John Kennedy's New Frontier--form the nucleus of this study's early chapters. His presidential efforts on behalf of full employment, a demand side approach to economic policy, and the "Keynesian revolution" form the second half of the study. Ultimately, this study suggests that President Johnson's …

Changes Of Amylases And Carbohydrates In Sweetpotatoes During Storage And Their Effects On Viscosity Of Sweetpotato Puree., Xiangyong Liu Jan 1995

Changes Of Amylases And Carbohydrates In Sweetpotatoes During Storage And Their Effects On Viscosity Of Sweetpotato Puree., Xiangyong Liu

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A critical problem associated with the production of sweetpotato puree is the inconsistency of final product. Two possible factors, amylase activity and carbohydrate content in sweetpotatoes during storage, were investigated. It was found that $\alpha$- and $\beta$-amylase activities do not significantly change during storage, and have no significant effects on viscosity of sweetpotato puree. The inconsistent products in sweetpotato puree processing are mostly due to the change of alcohol insoluble solids (AIS) in sweetpotatoes during storage. The decrease of AIS is partially due to respiration that converts starch into CO$\sb2$ and H$\sb2$O. A new bio-processing method was proposed to improve …

Variability Of Practice In Motor Skill Acquisition: A Task Dynamics Perspective., Nancy Heather Mcnevin Jan 1995

Variability Of Practice In Motor Skill Acquisition: A Task Dynamics Perspective., Nancy Heather Mcnevin

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

While previous studies attribute the superior learning associated with random practice to cognitive-mediated factors (i.e., Shea & Zimny, 1983; Lee & Magill, 1985), the extrinsic characteristics of the task and how subjects respond to them have not been considered. One view is that blocked and random practice conditions impose differential constraints on performance (Newell & McDonald, 1992). The two experiments reported here sought to test this view, with the assumption that differences in search strategies would be identified at the level of kinematic performance. In Experiment 1, a quantitative analysis of kinematic variability was used to assess the contextual interference …

Host-Guest Chemistry Of Cofacial Binuclear Copper(Ii) And Zinc(Ii) Complexes Of Bis(Beta-Diketone) Ligands., Laurie A. Brown Jan 1995

Host-Guest Chemistry Of Cofacial Binuclear Copper(Ii) And Zinc(Ii) Complexes Of Bis(Beta-Diketone) Ligands., Laurie A. Brown

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

We have been synthesizing cofacial binuclear copper(II) and zinc(II) complexes using bis($\beta$-diketone) ligands in order to design a host complex which selectively binds guest molecules and demonstrates catalytic activity. The metal atoms are held by the chelating acetylacetonate groups, of the bis($\beta$-diketone) ligands, in adjacent parallel planes separated by a cavity into which the guest molecule fits. The host-guest interactions are described. The synthesis of these complexes are discussed beginning with the synthesis of the substituted naphthalenes which bridge the meta-acetylacetonate planes. We needed 2,7-dimethylnaphthalene-1-carbonitrile for the synthesis of the bis($\beta$-diketone) ligand, NBAH$\sb2$-1-CN. After the first recrystallization of 2,7-dimethylnaphthalene-1-carbonitrile, it …
