Rhetoricizing Habermas: The Restoration Of Legitimacy As A Theme In The 1992 Televised Presidential Debates., Kevin Travis Jones Jan 1995

Rhetoricizing Habermas: The Restoration Of Legitimacy As A Theme In The 1992 Televised Presidential Debates., Kevin Travis Jones

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

During the past twenty years, scholars have posited the emergence of a legitimacy crisis in the American political system. Symptoms of the crisis were low voter turn out and a culture of withdrawal, cynicism, alienation, and a widespread perception of institutional incompetence and indifference. At the very least, the widespread mood of apathy and decline have been seized upon by various candidates seeking political office, in particular the presidency, who routinely engage in discourse targeting legitimacy restoration. This discourse echoed the general theme of the Jeffersonian Myth. This myth, which predates Jefferson in its old Roman roots, targets the citizen …

A Spatial Analysis Of Variation In Rural Real Estate Prices Across Homogeneous Land Market Areas In Louisiana., Gary A. Kennedy Jan 1995

A Spatial Analysis Of Variation In Rural Real Estate Prices Across Homogeneous Land Market Areas In Louisiana., Gary A. Kennedy

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Rural land, exchanged for its productive or consumptive value, is considered to be a differentiated product with varying characteristics. Multivariate procedures and hedonic price analysis were used to evaluate the impact of rural land characteristics on rural land prices across homogeneous rural land market areas in Louisiana. Multivariate methods of principal component analysis and cluster analysis were used to group 59 Louisiana parishes into eight rural land submarkets based on 13 physical and socio-economic variables. Using a mail survey technique, 948 Louisiana rural land sales were collected. A geographic information system (GIS) analysis of these 948 sales indicated that sales …

Educational Reform And The Social Democratic Party In Weimar Prussia, 1918-1932., Patricia Gebhart Mcfarland Jan 1995

Educational Reform And The Social Democratic Party In Weimar Prussia, 1918-1932., Patricia Gebhart Mcfarland

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Education in Germany has historically been a matter for the individual states rather than the central government. In Prussia in the 1920s, elementary education was segregated by religious denomination, while the upper grades were divided according to occupational specialty. The Social Democratic Party was the only party which proposed to change the system, calling for the secularization and integration of the schools. When it unexpectedly found itself in power in November 1918, the party's commitment to its program was tested. While the leadership continued to affirm its support for educational reform throughout the 1920s, it did little to introduce any …

Synthesis, Characterization, Liquid Crystals And Crosslinking Of Poly(Gamma-Alkyl-Alpha,L-Glutamates)., Javier Nakamatsu Jan 1995

Synthesis, Characterization, Liquid Crystals And Crosslinking Of Poly(Gamma-Alkyl-Alpha,L-Glutamates)., Javier Nakamatsu

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

As most polypeptides, poly($\gamma$-alkyl-$\alpha$,L-glutamates) exhibit the ability to exist in well defined chain conformations of extensive order such as the $\alpha$-helix. This helical conformation imparts a rod-like character to the polymer which is maintained in the melt and in certain solvents at particular concentrations. This dissertation reports the synthesis and characterization of poly($\gamma$-alkyl-$\alpha$,L-glutamates), in particular, of poly($\gamma$-stearyl-$\alpha$,L-glutamate) (PSLG), poly($\gamma$-benzyl-$\alpha$,L-glutamate) (PBLG), and poly($\gamma$-stearyl-$\alpha$,L-glutamate)-co-poly$(\gamma$-benzyl-$\alpha$,L-glutamate). Polymerization studies of PSLG with primary, tertiary, and silylated amines as initiators; and PBLG with coinitiators are described. The labeling of PSLG with a fluorescein dye is also explained. All the polymers were obtained from the corresponding N-carboxyanhydride …

The Life History (Age, Growth And Reproduction) Of Red Snapper (Lutjanus Campechanus) And Its Affinity For Oil And Gas Platforms., Jeffrey Howard Render

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this dissertation was to describe the association of red snapper, Lutjanus campechanus, with oil and gas platform habitat in the northern Gulf of Mexico. Ages were estimated using transverse sections of sagittae. Annuli were validated to have formed yearly. Age estimates ranged from less than 1 to 54 years. Von Bertalanffy growth models were significantly different for males and females; females exhibited a faster initial growth rate but achieved a lesser maximum length than did males. The variability in age among individuals of a given length or weight class precluded formulation of age at size keys. Otolith …

The South And American Foreign Policy, 1894-1904: Regional Concerns During The Age Of Imperialism., Marshall E. Schott Jan 1995

The South And American Foreign Policy, 1894-1904: Regional Concerns During The Age Of Imperialism., Marshall E. Schott

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

After the depression of 1893, some New South prophets advocated a more assertive, foreign policy as a means to attain regional economic uplift. With the objective of obtaining overseas markets, some of the prophets even supported the use of force to create American colonies as an appropriate goal of American foreign policy. The acquisition of new territories, and hence, new markets, the prophets maintained, would be an economic boon to southern producers of cotton, textiles, and other goods. And the economic stimulus accompanying an increase in foreign trade would lift the region out of poverty, promote the growth of southern …

Daily Variations Of Lipogenic Activities In Japanese Quail (Coturnix Coturnix Japonica)., Bruce L. Tedford Jan 1995

Daily Variations Of Lipogenic Activities In Japanese Quail (Coturnix Coturnix Japonica)., Bruce L. Tedford

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Studies were made in Japanese quail (Coturnix c. japonica) to determine if daily variations of plasma insulin and de novo lipogenesis exists and examine the roles of daily variations in lipogenic responsiveness to insulin and prolactin. A daily variation in plasma insulin levels exists in quail fed ad libitum, with photophase levels 4.6 times greater than scotophase levels. This variation was not driven exclusively by the feeding of the quail, because insulin levels had dropped by dark onset, yet all bird's crops contained food at this time. There was a daily variation in the amount of $\sp{14}$C-acetate labelled lipids extracted …

Solution Behavior Of Cascade Polymers., Keunok Han Yu Jan 1995

Solution Behavior Of Cascade Polymers., Keunok Han Yu

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This thesis consists of four chapters. In the first, a general introduction is presented. Chapter 2 deals with the characterization of polyamidoamine (PAMAM) cascade polymers. Diffusion coefficients of four different generations (generation 3, 5, 7, and 9) of PAMAMs were measured in aqueous solutions by dynamic light scattering. Generation 3 and 5 were characterized again, after labeling with fluorescein isothiocyanate, by fluorescence photobleaching recovery. The dynamic light scattering results depended on the concentration of added salt in the low salt limit, while the fluorescence values were almost independent of salt concentration. The polyelectrolyte effects, or solution nonidealities, strongly affected light …

Gulf Literacy: A Marine Science-Based Model Of Scientific Literacy., John Edward Trowbridge Jan 1995

Gulf Literacy: A Marine Science-Based Model Of Scientific Literacy., John Edward Trowbridge

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A trend in science education reform is the move towards the goal of scientific literacy. Attributes of scientific literacy include: (a) understanding key concepts and principles of science; (b) understanding newspaper articles and graphics related to science issues; and (c) using scientific ways of evaluating evidence for individual and societal purposes (AAAS, 1989; Demastes & Wandersee, 1992). Furthermore, BSCS (1993) has proposed a model of biological literacy that includes four distinct levels (nominal, functional, structural, and multidimensional). The Gulf of Mexico and its coastal environments are of social, economic and scientific importance. An understanding of the Gulf of Mexico in …

Diallel Analyses Of Percent Kernel Infection By Aspergillus Flavus And Ear Moisture Loss Rate In Maize., Yudong Zhang Jan 1995

Diallel Analyses Of Percent Kernel Infection By Aspergillus Flavus And Ear Moisture Loss Rate In Maize., Yudong Zhang

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Preharvest infection by Aspergillus flavus Link ex Fries and subsequent aflatoxin contamination of maize (Zea mays L.) grain are major production problems. Ear moisture loss rate (EMLR) is an important component of hybrid performance and maturity, and to some extent determines the suitability of a hybrid for a geographical area. A 10-parent diallel experiment was conducted in 1992 and 1994 to study the genetic nature of both percent kernel infection (PKI) by A. flavus and EMLR. General combining ability (GCA, V$\sb{\rm g}$), specific combining ability (SCA, V$\rm\sb{s}$), and reciprocal mean squares for PKI were significant. The ratio $\rm 2V\sb{g}/(2V\sb{g}+V\sb{s}$) was …

Synthesis, Characterization, And Diels-Alder Reactivity Of Polymers Containing The 2,3,6,7-Anthracenetetracarboxyl Unit., James Larry Morris Jan 1995

Synthesis, Characterization, And Diels-Alder Reactivity Of Polymers Containing The 2,3,6,7-Anthracenetetracarboxyl Unit., James Larry Morris

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Anthracene is a fluorescent molecule that undergoes chemical reactions as a Diels-Alder diene. Incorporation of the anthracene nucleus into a polymer system imparts upon it the characteristics of anthracene. This work in concerned with the synthesis of a suitable 2,3,6,7-anthracenetetracarboxylic acid based monomer. The monomer is then polymerized and the resultant polymer is crosslinked in a Diels-Alder reaction. The synthesis of 2,3,6,7-anthracene derivatives is underdeveloped. The difficulty in the synthesis of these compounds has probably precluded their development. Herein is described the synthesis of 2,3,6,7-anthracenetetracarboxylic acid in three simple steps inexpensively and in high yield. Older methods required more steps …

The Dual Voices Of The Civil Rights Movement: The Heroic Narratives Of Martin Luther King, Jr. And Malcolm X., Kerry Paul Owens Jan 1995

The Dual Voices Of The Civil Rights Movement: The Heroic Narratives Of Martin Luther King, Jr. And Malcolm X., Kerry Paul Owens

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Since reconstruction African-American leaders have embodied conflicting aspirations. While some leaders like Booker T. Washington and Frederick Douglass urged complete assimilation, others like W. E. B. DuBois and Marcus Garvey have preached autonomy and separation. These leaders have tended to serve as icons for rival programs; their rhetoric as authoritative, and their lives as inspired models for future leaders. This dissertation examines the hagiography of the two most famous leaders of the late 20th century, Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X. It argues that their rhetoric was undergirded by the myth of the heroic quest and that their lives …

The debates in the United States and England have been proved to be centered around the relinquishment of power from the central government to the local educational authorities and schools. To search for a …

Tectonic Subsidence Of The Cretaceous Western Interior Basin, United States., Ming Pang Jan 1995

Tectonic Subsidence Of The Cretaceous Western Interior Basin, United States., Ming Pang

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The tectonic subsidence history recorded in middle Cenomanian to early Campanian (96 to 80 Ma) strata in the U.S. Cretaceous Western Interior basin was studied by applying two-dimensional flexural backstripping techniques to six regional stratigraphic sections across different segments of the basin. Results indicate that tectonic subsidence over the 16 m.y. study interval consists of two distinct components: a westward-increasing flexural subsidence confined within a few hundred kilometers of the thrust belt, and a spatially uniform "residual" subsidence that affected the entire basin. The residual subsidence does not represent signals of eustatic sea level changes but instead reflects epeirogenic movements …

The Role Of Fecal Pellets In The Flux Of Carbon To The Sea Floor On A River-Influenced Continental Shelf Subject To Hypoxia., Naureen Aziz Qureshi Jan 1995

The Role Of Fecal Pellets In The Flux Of Carbon To The Sea Floor On A River-Influenced Continental Shelf Subject To Hypoxia., Naureen Aziz Qureshi

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The Louisiana continental shelf near the Mississippi and Atchfalaya River deltas is a stratified and highly productive coastal system characterized by the largest hypoxic (dissolved oxygen $<$2 mg l$\sp{-1}$) zone in the western Atlantic Ocean. Carbon export from surface waters in the form of sedimenting zooplankton fecal pellets was examined to determine its importance in the formation and maintenance of oxygen deficiency in the bottom waters. Two sediment traps (5-6 and 15 m) were deployed in 1991 and 1992 in 20 m water depth within an area of chronic and seasonally severe hypoxia. I determined the fecal pellet number and carbon flux, and total carbon flux from the surface waters, the percent primary production exported as fecal pellets, and the potential for fluxed fecal pellet carbon to support bottom water hypoxia. I also quantitatively sampled the water column at discrete depths for fecal pellets and zooplankton to determine potential source organisms and their seasonal, diel and spatial variation. The highest densities of total organisms, copepods and copepod nauplii occurred during March and April (1992), when chlorophyll a concentrations in surface waters were highest, and decreased in summer and fall. The abundance of fecal pellets was positively correlated with total organisms, copepods and copepod nauplii, the likely source of fecal pellets. The fluxes of total particulate material, organic carbon, organic nitrogen, fecal pellet carbon and phytoplankton carbon varied similarly between seasons, and was lowest in summer and highest in spring. The fluxes were greater in 1991 than in 1992. Seasonal variations in fecal pellet number and carbon flux were positively correlated with indicators of high surface water productivity in 1991, but not in 1992. The flux of fecal pellets from surface to bottom waters accounted for 55% of the particulate material exported vertically, exceeded phytoplankton carbon fluxes, and was high enough to deplete the bottom water oxygen reserves in spring. The results support the hypothesis that the development of summer hypoxia is associated with the decomposition of organic matter accumulated in spring primarily by the sedimentation of a phytoplankton bloom via fecal pellets, and not as intact phytoplankton cells.

A Phytochemical Study Of Members Of The Genus Magnolia (Magnoliaceae) And Biosynthetic Studies Of Secondary Metabolites In Asteraceae Hairy Root Cultures., Qi Song Jan 1995

A Phytochemical Study Of Members Of The Genus Magnolia (Magnoliaceae) And Biosynthetic Studies Of Secondary Metabolites In Asteraceae Hairy Root Cultures., Qi Song

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Phytochemical investigations of four members of the genus Magnolia (family Magnoliaceae) were performed to provide lignans and sesquiterpene lactones. The aerial parts of the rare Louisiana native M. pyramidata afforded eight new neolignans with a novel skeleton, pyramidatin A to H. Leaves of M. virginiana provided the known sesquiterpene lactones parthenolide and costunolide as well as the new costunolactol and costunolactol dimer. An annual study of the leave constituents of M. virginiana illustrated that native M. virginiana only produces sesquiterpene lactones but transferred M. virginiana, possibly a northern variety, produces only lignans. The leaves of M. soulangiana gave five known …

The Efficacy Of Scaffolding Strategies In Holistic Language Intervention On Language And Phonologically Delayed Children., Monica Lynne Bradshaw Jan 1995

The Efficacy Of Scaffolding Strategies In Holistic Language Intervention On Language And Phonologically Delayed Children., Monica Lynne Bradshaw

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study investigated the efficacy of scaffolding strategies within holistic language intervention with six language and phonologically delayed preschool children. The scaffolding condition was compared to two experimental controls using either wh-questions or print awareness techniques. It was hypothesizsd that the use of scaffolding strategies would result in greater semantic displacement, syntactic complexity, and phonological complexity than the use of either the wh-questions or print awareness controls. Efficacy of the conditions was measured by (a) semantic levels, (b) mean length of utterance, and (c) percent of words produced correctly. An alternating treatment was employed in the single-subject study. The subjects …

Data Analysis Using Reconstructability Theory., Deky Dicky Joe Gouw Jan 1995

Data Analysis Using Reconstructability Theory., Deky Dicky Joe Gouw

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In this dissertation, we develop a new data analysis method using reconstructability theory, particularly k-systems theory. K-systems or Klir systems theory is a branch of reconstructability theory and provides a setting wherein common problems in statistics can be solved using the power of information theory by invoking the maximum entropy principle. The method is superior over classical statistical data analysis. The approach starts with the concept of variable interaction in reconstructability analysis (RA), We then use the RA definition of interaction to improve the quality of main and interaction effects in data analysis. With classical statistical data analysis, we need …

Nitrogen Biogeochemistry Of Aquaculture Pond Sediments., John Albert Hargreaves Jan 1995

Nitrogen Biogeochemistry Of Aquaculture Pond Sediments., John Albert Hargreaves

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Aquaculture pond water quality is dominated by planktonic processes, although the high surface-to-volume ratio suggests that sediment has the potential to effect important changes in water quality. The objectives of this research were to evaluate annual variation of sediment nitrogen biogeochemistry and develop a model of annual variation in ammonia concentration in a commercial channel catfish pond. In addition, the effects of physical and chemical sediment management techniques on water quality in aquatic mesocosms were evaluated. Sediment nitrogen was dominated by organic (92-96%) and adsorbed ammonium (2-4%) fractions. Porewater ammonium comprised the smallest yet most dynamic component of sediment N, …

An Examination Of Investor Evaluation Of Corporate Social Performance., Gisele Kay Jackson Jan 1995
