Linguistic And Cultural Immersion And Second Language Acquisition: International Young Student Exchange., Rosita Mira Maristany
Linguistic And Cultural Immersion And Second Language Acquisition: International Young Student Exchange., Rosita Mira Maristany
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The trend in foreign language learning reflects a move from "fragmented" language to "whole" language (Rigg 1991). It includes the individual as well as the social aspect of language acquisition; and the integration of language and culture. Student international exchange programs provide the ideal atmosphere for "whole" language learning and the integration of language and culture in total language and cultural immersion. Most research in international student exchange programs described the organization of the program or addressed a particular variable. There is a need for integrative "whole" research rather than "fragmented" research. The method chosen as most appropriate for this …
Daily Variations In Protein Synthesis And Tissue Responsiveness To Growth Hormone, Prolactin And Insulin-Like Growth Factor-I In The Gulf Killifish, Fundulus Grandis Baird And Girard., Zeleke Negatu
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Circadian variations of $\sp{14}$C-glycine incorporation into protein and the responsiveness of muscle tissue to growth hormone, prolactin and insulin-like growth factor-I were examined in gulf killifish, Fundulus grandis. Incorporation of label during a 5 h period following $\sp{14}$C-glycine injection was tested at different times of day (LD 12:12). Incorporation varied during the day in all the tissues examined (scale, muscle, liver and intestine). The times of peak incorporations differed among the tissues. Scales showed peak incorporation during the dark hours. Peak incorporation by muscle occurred at the onset of light. These patterns were similar in male and female fish. The …
Investigation In The Theory Of Stochastic Processes., Xiao Liang Li
Investigation In The Theory Of Stochastic Processes., Xiao Liang Li
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
In Chapter I of this dissertation, we present a pedagogical introduction to the basic concepts of stochastic theory and review the progress made as well as the outstanding unsolved problems in the field. For the rest of this dissertation, we use a generalized quantum Langevin equation (GLE) approach to investigate various properties of quantum dissipative systems. In Chapter II, calculations for the displacement and random force correlation functions for Brownian motion are generalized to the case of an arbitrary heat bath for a damped harmonic quantum oscillator. The mean square displacement of such an oscillator is then evaluated for both …
Multiresolutional Fault-Tolerant Sensor Integration And Object Recognition In Images., Lakshman Prasad
Multiresolutional Fault-Tolerant Sensor Integration And Object Recognition In Images., Lakshman Prasad
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation applies multiresolution methods to two important problems in signal analysis. The problem of fault-tolerant sensor integration in distributed sensor networks is addressed, and an efficient multiresolutional algorithm for estimating the sensors' effective output is proposed. The problem of object/shape recognition in images is addressed in a multiresolutional setting using pyramidal decomposition of images with respect to an orthonormal wavelet basis. A new approach to efficient template matching to detect objects using computational geometric methods is put forward. An efficient paradigm for object recognition is described.
The Habitat, Ecology And Epidemiology Of Eastern Equine Encephalomyelitis In Southeast Louisiana., Kenny L. Samui
The Habitat, Ecology And Epidemiology Of Eastern Equine Encephalomyelitis In Southeast Louisiana., Kenny L. Samui
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Many unanswered questions on the epidemiology and ecology of eastern equine encephalomyelitis (EEE) still preclude a complete understanding of its natural history. Among these are the distribution and epidemic vectors of EEE virus (EEEV) in different regions, habitats, and foci; its inter-epidemic maintenance, and overwintering mechanisms. Phase 1 of a research project designed to find answers to the above questions with regard to southeast Louisiana was conducted over 1992 and 1993, and consisted of several individual studies. These included 3 mosquito studies to determine major horse- and bird-feeding mosquito species that could be the EEEV epidemic vectors in southeast Louisiana; …
A Formal Methodology For Deriving Purely Functional Programs From Z Specifications Via The Intermediate Specification Language Funz., Linda Bostwick Sherrell
A Formal Methodology For Deriving Purely Functional Programs From Z Specifications Via The Intermediate Specification Language Funz., Linda Bostwick Sherrell
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
In recent years, both formal methods and software reuse have been increasingly advocated as a means of alleviating the ills of the software crisis. During this same time period, purely functional programming languages, which have a long history in the realm of rapid prototyping, have emerged as a viable medium for real-world applications. Since these trends are likely to continue, this work describes a methodology that facilitates the derivation of purely functional programs from existing Z specifications. A unique aspect of the methodology is its incorporation of an intermediate specification language (FunZ) during the design phase of software development. Most …

Rural Industry And Rural Development In China: The Role Of Geography, Transportation, And Policy In Jiangsu Province., Shew-Jiuan B. Su
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A significant change in China since late 1978 is the development of rural industry (also township-village enterprise, or TVE). Rural industry is particularly important in light of China's current policy of socio-economic decentralization. Rural industry not only absorbs surplus labor and pushes the increases of agricultural productivity, it also revitalizes China's previously lethargic economy. In this study, variations in employment, production value, and economic efficiency of rural industry are analyzed in terms of geographical, transportation and policy determinants at the county/city level of Jiangsu Province in China. Rural industry's contribution to agricultural and rural welfare activities, and how levels of …
Genotypic Variation In Sweetpotato Ipomoea Batatas (L.) Lam. Clones., Arthur Quejada Villordon
Genotypic Variation In Sweetpotato Ipomoea Batatas (L.) Lam. Clones., Arthur Quejada Villordon
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Arbitrarily-primed PCR-based assays established the presence of sweetpotato intra-clonal genetic variability. These DNA polymorphism assays provided benchmark information regarding cultivar genetic uniformity in sweetpotato foundation seed programs. Arbitrarily-primed markers were also used to compare the genetic uniformity among sweetpotato clones derived conventionally, i.e., through adventitious sprouts, and nodally-based propagation systems. Initially, 38 primers generated 110 scorable DNA fragments using two virus-indexed plants from each clone source. Twenty-one bands (18.6%) were scored as putative polymorphic markers based on the presence or absence of amplified products. A subset of 14 marker loci generated by four selected primers was used to further assay …

Cloning, Expression, Primary Structure, And Insertion Mutagenesis Of The Pyruvate Formate-Lyase Enzyme Of Aeromonas Hydrophila., Mohamed Alaa Eldin Abdelalim Awad
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The pyruvate formate-lyase enzyme (Pfl), a key enzyme in alcoholic fermentation, catalyzes the anaerobic conversion of pyruvate into acetyl-CoA and formate in prokaryotes. The pyruvate formate-lyase gene (pfl) of the facultative anaerobe Aeromonas hydrophila was cloned and sequenced. Subsequently, the Pfl was characterized based on the deduced amino acid sequence and evaluated in vivo following insertion mutagenesis. Finally, the pathogenesis of a defined mutant was compared to wild type A. hydrophila in channel catfish. The pfl of A. hydrophila was identified from two recombinant pBluescript SK(-) clones excised from a $\lambda$ ZAP II phage library. Both clones carried the same …

Studies Of V-Nitrogenase From Azotobacter Vinelandii: Structural Variations, Temperature And Solvent Effects., Carol Zembiak Blanchard
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
When Q-Sepharose was used in the purification of the V-nitrogenase proteins from Azotobacter vinelandii, an increase in resolution was observed which resulted in a separation of the nitrogenase component 1 protein (Av1$\sp\prime$) into two forms, labeled Av1$\sp\prime\sb{\rm A}$ and Av1$\sp\prime\sb{\rm B}.$ Even though both forms possessed the same enzymatic behavior, Av1$\sp\prime\sb{\rm A}$ exhibited a lower specific activity and migrated during gel filtration with an apparent lower molecular weight than Av1$\sp\prime\sb{\rm B}.$ Furthermore, SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis showed different relative compositions of the two major subunits of both forms with Av1$\sp\prime\sb{\rm A}$ possessing a trimer $(\alpha\beta\sb2)$ pattern compared to the tetramer $(\alpha\sb\beta\sb2)$ …

The Relationship Between The Accuracy Of Certain "Generalized" Body Density Prediction Equations And Indices Of Fatness, Body Physique/Proportionality And Fat Distribution., Christopher Melancon Hearon
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
There is a need to eliminate the least accurate of the existing equations for anthropometrical body density prediction and support for the use of specific prediction equations over generalized equations. The purpose of the investigation was to examine the accuracy of the Jackson-Pollock (JP) and Durnin-Womersley (DW) generalized anthropometrical body density prediction equations in relation to indices of overall fatness, regional fat distribution and body proportionality. The relationships between prediction accuracy (predicted body density minus hydrodensitometric estimate of body density) and three mass/stature indices (total fatness indices), waist-to-hip circumference ratio (WC/HC)(android/gynoid fat distribution) and the three components of the Heath-Carter …
Phase Space Structures In Chaotic Quantum Dynamics., Barbara Smetana Helmkamp
Phase Space Structures In Chaotic Quantum Dynamics., Barbara Smetana Helmkamp
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
I compare the quantum and classical dynamics of a particle moving in a cosine potential while subject to a time-dependent force. I concentrate here on the behavior of an initially well-localized wave packet at times before the classically chaotic motion is fully developed. I find that the quantum and classical dynamics are indistinguishable well beyond the Ehrenfest time where the wave packet delocalizes. The quantum and classical descriptions first differ precisely when the classical probability density is folded in the vicinity of a hyperbolic fixed point. At this point, the wave function acquires a nodal structure which I show to …
Molecular Cloning, Sequencing, And Regulation Of The Rhodobacter Capsulatushemb Gene., Karl Joseph Indest
Molecular Cloning, Sequencing, And Regulation Of The Rhodobacter Capsulatushemb Gene., Karl Joseph Indest
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The common tetrapyrrole pathway in the photosynthetic bacterium, Rhodobacter capsulatus, is responsible for the synthesis of bacteriochlorophyll, heme, vitamin B-12, and siroheme. The common portion of this pathway is regulated up to 100-fold by changes in oxygen tension. This regulation is accomplished by controlling the intracellular level of porphobilinogen. One way in which porphobilinogen levels could be controlled is by regulating the synthesis of porphobilinogen. Porphobilinogen synthase, encoded by the hemB gene, is the second enzyme in the common tetrapyrrole pathway that catalyzes the dimerization of 5-aminolevulinic acid to form the monopyrrole porphobilinogen. In order to further investigate the mechanism …

Sediment Retention In A Bottomland Hardwood Wetland In Eastern Arkansas., Barbara A. Kleiss
Sediment Retention In A Bottomland Hardwood Wetland In Eastern Arkansas., Barbara A. Kleiss
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
One of the often-stated functions of wetlands is their ability to remove sediments and other particulates from water, thus improving water quality in the adjacent aquatic system. However, actual rates of suspended sediment removal have rarely been measured in freshwater wetland systems. To address this issue, suspended sediment dynamics were measured in a 85-km$\sp2$ bottomland hardwood (BLH) wetland adjacent to the highly turbid Cache River in eastern Arkansas during the 1988-90 water years. A suspended sediment mass balance was calculated using depth-integrated, flow-weighted daily measurements at wetland inflow and outflow points. Over the three year period, suspended sediment load decreased …

The objective of the present work was to provide an insight to the nucleation and evolution of deformation patterns occurring during transgranular stress corrosion cracking (TGSCC) and produce new alternatives for addressing the nature of the embrittlement process. Flat, tensile $\alpha$-brass (72Cu-28Zn) specimens were tested in 5 M NH$\sb4$OH, 0.1 M CuSO$\sb4$ and 1 M NaNO$\sb2$ solutions at a strain rate of $1\times 10\sp{-5}$ s$\sp{-1}.$ Slip band spacing (SBS) and slip band heights (SBH) were measured as a function of strain by conducting interrupted experiments in the SCC environments and were compared with those developed during laboratory air experiments. The …
Parallel Algorithms For Constructing Convex Hulls., Jigang Liu
Parallel Algorithms For Constructing Convex Hulls., Jigang Liu
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
For a given set of planar points S, the convex hull of S, CH(S), is defined to be a list of ordered points which represents the smallest convex polygon that contains all of the points. The convex hull problem, one of the most important problems in computational geometry, has many applications in areas such as computer graphics, simulation and pattern recognition. There are two strategies used in designing parallel convex hull algorithms. One strategy is the divide-and-conquer paradigm. The disadvantage to this strategy is that the recursive merge step is complicated and difficult to implement on current parallel machines. The …

The Association Between Anticyclonic Weather Changes Over The Central Gulf Coast And Large-Scale Circulation Changes., Robert V. Rohli
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Trends in winter extratropical anticyclonic weather type frequencies (1961-1989) were examined for New Orleans, Louisiana, in order to identify the effects of global climatic change on regional-scale circulation changes over the central Gulf Coast. The number of days dominated by surface continental anticyclones (CH days) was found to have decreased significantly over time, while Pacific anticyclone (PH) frequency showed significant temporal increase. Therefore, 50 kPa geopotential height variability, 50 kPa geostrophic flow, and surface atmospheric variables were examined to determine whether changes in these features have accompanied the frequency changes in weather types. Prior to PH days, areas of greatest …
X-Ray Absorption And Electron Paramagnetic Resonance Studies Of Azotobacter Vinelandii Nitrogenase., Roland Carroll Tittsworth
X-Ray Absorption And Electron Paramagnetic Resonance Studies Of Azotobacter Vinelandii Nitrogenase., Roland Carroll Tittsworth
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Fe K-edge Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy was used to investigate the metal-cluster structure of both the Mo-containing (Av1) and V-containing (Av1$\sp\prime$) nitrogenase component 1 proteins of Azotobacter vinelandii in their as-isolated and thionine-oxidized states. Using the EXAFS data, plausible distance assignments were made for the cofactor clusters. It was shown that small but consistent distance changes occur in both Av1 and Av1$\sp\prime$ upon thionine oxidation. Furthermore, the EXAFS of Av1$\sp\prime$ is very similar to that of Av1, supporting the proposal that the two proteins have homologous metal cluster structures. Fe K-edge and Mo K-edge EXAFS were used …

Just noticeable differences for interaural time and intensity were obtained using 1/3-octave narrow band noise (NBN) stimuli centered at 500 and 4000 Hz in three conditions: (1) the NBNs played in isolation; (2) the NBNs played simultaneously with congruent interaural information across frequency; and (3) the NBNs played simultaneously with either the 500 Hz band dichotic and the 4000 Hz band diotic (a) or the 500 Hz band diotic …
Performing The Community, Telling The Self: Storytelling By Members Of A Group Home For Men With Mental Retardation., Sharon Elizabeth Croft
Performing The Community, Telling The Self: Storytelling By Members Of A Group Home For Men With Mental Retardation., Sharon Elizabeth Croft
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study uses an ethnographic approach to examine the stories told by members of a group home for men with mental retardation. The author contends that the culture of the group home works to constrain how group home members interact within this community. The author argues, however, that despite the cultural constraints, the men use storytelling to establish their individuality, even though the stories themselves, in their content and in the performance of their telling, often reify cultural constraints and their cultural constructions. The author recounts how she, as ethnographer, interacted within this community. After identifying, describing, and analyzing eight …
