A Two Dimensional Vertically Integrated Moving Boundary Hydrodynamic Model In Curvilinear Coordinates., Vibhas Aravamuthan Jan 1995

A Two Dimensional Vertically Integrated Moving Boundary Hydrodynamic Model In Curvilinear Coordinates., Vibhas Aravamuthan

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A two dimensional, vertically averaged, hydrodynamic mathematical model on an adaptive boundary fitted grid is developed. This model addresses numerous drawbacks in the traditional finite difference models and incorporates such features as moving boundaries due to tidal incursion, and the ability to resolve irregular coastline geometries. A semi-implicit finite difference scheme is developed in order to overcome time step restrictions due to the gravity wave stability criterion. An eulerian-lagrangian formulation is used to solve the hydrodynamic equations on unsteady grid systems. The model is applied to study circulation features in Lake Pontchartrain (a medium sized physical system) and to the …

Solid Removal Schemes And The Rotating Biological Contactor In Recirculating Fish Culture Systems., Aurelio Alfonso Delos Reyes Jr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The performance of combinations of the Norpac$\sp\circler$ tube RBC with a bead filter (System I), a tube settler (System II), and a sand filter (System III) in pilot scale recirculating systems stocked with tilapia were evaluated and compared. Good fit empirical equations were obtained relating TAN and NO$\sp2$-N (both exponential), and DO (linear) with daily amount of feed. Likewise, linear equations relating bead filter or sand filter pressure with feed, and flow with pressure were obtained. Systems I and II maintained favorable water quality up to the maximum feed load studied of 3 kg/day. System III effectively handled only 1.2 …

Notions Of Happiness In Rousseau's "Julie"., Peter Buttross Jr Jan 1995

Notions Of Happiness In Rousseau's "Julie"., Peter Buttross Jr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This enquiry first establishes both the importance and the general meaning of the notions of happiness in Rousseau's corpus. Both private and public happiness are seen as the overarching intent of his life as a thinker. The possibility of a tertiary notion of happiness--between private and public--is presented with the introduction of the subject work Julie; or The New Heloise. Themes considered at some length are passion/virtue, happiness/duty, love/friendship, as well as the notions of Platonic and courtly love--not to mention the dichotomy motion/rest. At the end of Part One of the novel, the lovers are forcibly separated, and the …

Some Problems In Algebraic And Extremal Graph Theory., Edward Tauscher Dobson Jan 1995

Some Problems In Algebraic And Extremal Graph Theory., Edward Tauscher Dobson

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In this dissertation, we consider a wide range of problems in algebraic and extremal graph theory. In extremal graph theory, we will prove that the Tree Packing Conjecture is true for all sequences of trees that are 'almost stars'; and we prove that the Erdos-Sos conjecture is true for all graphs G with girth at least 5. We also conjecture that every graph G with minimal degree k and girth at least $2t+1$ contains every tree T of order $kt+1$ such that $\Delta(T)\leq k.$ This conjecture is trivially true for t = 1. We Prove the conjecture is true for …

Abstract Volterra Equations., Mihi Kim Jan 1995

Abstract Volterra Equations., Mihi Kim

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation is devoted to the study of the abstract Volterra equation $$v(t) = A\int\sbsp{0}{t}\ v(t - s)d\mu(s) + f(t)\qquad{\rm for}\ t\ge0,\eqno&(\rm VE)$$. where A is a closed linear operator in a complex Banach space $X,\ \mu$ is a complex valued function of local bounded variation, and $f:\lbrack0,\infty)\to X$ is continuous and Laplace transformable. Laplace transform methods are used to characterize the existence and uniqueness of exponentially bounded solutions v for a given forcing term f, an operator A, and a given kernel $\mu$. We extend the methods of a solution family (or a resolvent) for (VE) by studying integrated …

Continuously Differentiable Selections And Parametrizations Of Multifunctions In One Dimension., Craig Knuckles Jan 1995

Continuously Differentiable Selections And Parametrizations Of Multifunctions In One Dimension., Craig Knuckles

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Sufficient conditions are given for a multifunction (set-valued function) to admit a continuously differentiable selection in one dimension. These conditions are given in terms of Clarke generalized gradients of the Hamiltonian associated with the multifunction. Also, the multifunctions in one dimension that can be parametrized with continuously differentiable functions are completely characterized. The characterization is again in terms of Clarke generalized gradients of the Hamiltonian associated with the multifunction.

Responses Of Mammalian Cells To Membrane-Disrupting Peptides., Wai Chun Jennifer Lo Jan 1995

Responses Of Mammalian Cells To Membrane-Disrupting Peptides., Wai Chun Jennifer Lo

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Responses of cultured mouse fibroblasts, human erythrocytes, bovine erythrocytes, and liposomes with different phosphatidylcholine (PC) and sphingomyelin (SPM) ratios to both natural and synthetic lytic peptides were characterized. Peptide-induced morphological alterations of the plasma membrane of cells were examined by various light microscopic techniques and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The ability of natural and synthetic peptides to kill cells and cause increased permeability of liposomes was evaluated using Trypan Blue (TB) dye exclusion assay and fluorescent dye leakage assay, respectively. Differential interference contrast microscopy, SEM, and fluorescence studies revealed characteristic structural and lipid changes in the plasma membrane of lytic …

Sensory Interaction And Descriptions Of Fabric Hand., L. D. Burns, J. Chandler, D. M. Brown, B. Cameron, M. J. Dallas

Faculty Publications

82 subjects who viewed and felt fabrics (sensory interaction group) used different categories of terms to describe fabric hand than did 38 subjects who only felt the fabrics. Therefore, the methods used to measure fabric hand that isolate the senses may not accurately assess the way in which subjects describe fabric hand in nonlaboratory settings.

Role Of Erythroid Kruppel-Like Factor In Human Γ- To Β-Globin Gene Switching, D. Donze, T. M. Townes, J. J. Bieker Jan 1995

Role Of Erythroid Kruppel-Like Factor In Human Γ- To Β-Globin Gene Switching, D. Donze, T. M. Townes, J. J. Bieker

Faculty Publications

Erythroid Kruppel-like factor (EKLF) is an erythroid-specific transcription factor that contains zinc finger domains similar to the Kruppel protein of Drosophila melanogaster. Previous studies demonstrated that EKLF binds to the CACCC box in the human β-globin gene promoter and activates transcription. CACCC box mutations that cause severe β-thalassemias in humans inhibit EKLF binding. Results described in this paper suggest that EKLF functions predominately in adult erythroid tissue. The EKLF gene is expressed at a 3-fold higher level in adult erythroid tissue than in fetal erythroid tissue, and the EKLF protein binds to the human β-globin promoter 8-fold more efficiently than …

Elementos Sobrenaturales En Las Diez Comedias De Cervantes., Sara M. Lavastida Jan 1995

Elementos Sobrenaturales En Las Diez Comedias De Cervantes., Sara M. Lavastida

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation studies the supernatural elements in Cervantes' comedies. There have been studies in the past, like the dissertation of Linton Lomas Barrett and the dissertation of Mary Lewis Dewey Weaver, that deal with some themes similar to this dissertation. The dissertation of Barrett deals only with the supernatural elements in La Numancia, and the dissertation of Dewey Weaver only studies the presence of magic and witchcraft in some of the narrative prose works by Cervantes. This dissertation not only deals with magic and witchcraft but also the supernatural elements that are present in the ten comedies, such as fate, …

Model For Planning Well Control Operations Involving An Induced Fracture., Alvaro Felippe Negrao Jan 1995

Model For Planning Well Control Operations Involving An Induced Fracture., Alvaro Felippe Negrao

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation presents a numerical simulator for designing a dynamic kill of an underground blowout. The simulator consists of three sub-programs: a reservoir model, a wellbore model, and a fracture model. Previously published procedures have modeled the fracture by assuming a constant pressure in the wellbore at the depth of fracture. This assumption has sometimes led to unrealistic results. In this work, a hydraulic fracture model is coupled with the reservoir and wellbore model using a system analysis approach. The hydraulic fracture model is based on a pseudo-3D model with some modifications introduced to more accurately model the extension of …

Nitrogen Fluxes In Mangrove Sediments And Their Coupling With Aquatic Primary Productivity In Terminos Lagoon, Campeche, Mexico., Victor Hugo Rivera-Monroy

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The significance of nitrogen transformations in mangrove sediments to the exchange of nitrogen in mangrove forests and influence on aquatic primary productivity was studied between 1990-1992 in Terminos Lagoon, Mexico. Fluxes of dissolved inorganic and organic nitrogen, particulate nitrogen (PN), and total suspended sediments (TSS) were measured in a fringe mangrove forest using the flume technique. There was a net import of NH$\sb{4}\sp{+}$ and NO$\sb{2}\sp{-}$ + NO$\sb{3}\sp{-}$ from the creek and basin forest, while particulate (PN) and dissolved organic nitrogen were exported to the creek and basin forest. There was a net import of TSS to the fringe forest from …

Gelatin Of Rodlike Polymers., Deborah L. Tipton Jan 1995

Gelatin Of Rodlike Polymers., Deborah L. Tipton

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Gelation of rodlike polymers was studied by a variety of techniques. Fourier transform video microscopy was used to quantitatively study poly(p-phenylenebenzobisthiazole) in sulfuric acid on a preformed gel and as the gelation process occurred. Differential scanning calorimetry was used to determine the extent of the solvent shell surrounding molecules of hydroxypropyl cellulose upon gel formation and melting. Various light scattering experiments were performed on gels made from poly($\gamma$-benzyl-$\alpha$,L-glutamate) in toluene. Some of the analysis is geared towards a percolative type mechanism. The results and some suggestions for further work are presented.

In question were the effects of vibrato, timbre, and frequency on tuning accuracy. Subjects (N = 198) were university music students (n = …

Development Of A Femtosecond Time-Resolved Raman Spectrometer For Hemoglobin Studies., Junbo Chen Jan 1995

Development Of A Femtosecond Time-Resolved Raman Spectrometer For Hemoglobin Studies., Junbo Chen

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A femtosecond time-resolved Raman spectrometer is developed to study the ultrafast dynamics of hemoprotein. The laser system consists of a dye laser synchronously pumped by the SHG of compressed ML Nd:YAG laser pulse, and a Ti:sapphire regenerative amplifier using chirped-pulse-amplification technique. The laser system provides 350 fs pulses output with 0.4 mJ/pulse energy at the repetition rate of 1 kHz. The tunability covers the whole Ti:sapphire lasing range with the use of different laser dye. Femtosecond time-resolved resonance Raman experiment shows that the ligand photodissociation quantum yield depends on the nature of ligand. With three ligands studied, CO has about …

Applications Of Some Robust Statistics In Forestry., Kunjin Shi Jan 1995

Applications Of Some Robust Statistics In Forestry., Kunjin Shi

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

All statistical procedures are based on a set of assumptions, such as normality, independence and linearity. In practical applications, these assumptions can rarely be satisfied completely. Deviation from classical parametric assumptions may result in loss of efficiency or even lead to misleading conclusions. Robust statistics that have been extensively studied in the past two decades provide alternatives to deal with such problems. This research was designed to investigate the applicability of robust estimation of population means and robust linear regression in forestry. Five robust estimators, Huber's minimax estimator, Hampel's three parameter redescending estimator, Andrew's wave estimator, Tukey's biweight estimator, and …

Aphra Behn And Susanna Centlivre: A Materialist-Feminist Study., Amy Margaret Atchley

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Only with the fairly recent advent of Women's Studies have attempts been made to rediscover neglected works by female authors. This dissertation examines the works of English playwrights Aphra Behn (1640-1689) and Susanna Centlivre (1669-1723) and the uniquely female perception of the Restoration and early eighteenth century they have left us. Both women wrote intrigue comedies, among other genres, within a generation of each other. Each made arranged marriage for profit and the suffering it caused women the primary object of her criticism and satire. But while the women shared a sex, nationality and vocation, not to mention a preoccupation …

Religion In Seventeenth-Century Anglican Virginia: Myth, Persuasion, And The Creation Of An American Identity., Edward Lawrence Bond Jan 1995

Religion In Seventeenth-Century Anglican Virginia: Myth, Persuasion, And The Creation Of An American Identity., Edward Lawrence Bond

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This work examines the religious thought and the function of religion in colonial Virginia from first settlement to approximately 1725 by looking at the religious aspects of England's missions to the New World, the neglect and subsequent collapse of these missions, and the creation by Virginians of an Anglican religious establishment possessed of a self-identity different from that of the Church of England in the mother country. Virginia began as an extension of England into the world, a part of the English nation which, in its religious aspects, was shaped by the mythic idea that true Englishmen were Protestants. Virginia, …

A Cross-Case Analysis Of Middle School Reading Teachers' Theoretical Orientations As They Relate To Classroom Practices., Shirley Theriot Fogleman Jan 1995

A Cross-Case Analysis Of Middle School Reading Teachers' Theoretical Orientations As They Relate To Classroom Practices., Shirley Theriot Fogleman

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Each interaction between teachers and students is a reflection of the theory that these professionals, sometimes unknowingly, posit about what should be occurring in their classrooms. The purpose of this study is to explore the differences between middle school language arts teachers' beliefs about how children actually read a text, and how these teachers translate these beliefs into classroom practices. The beliefs we hold about reading comprehension are essential to our understanding about how we should instruct and assess our students in our classes. Leu and Kinzer (1988) refer to two beliefs' frameworks of comprehension in reading, based on the …

Parallelization Of Reconstructability Analysis Algorithms., Patti E. Iles

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Bush Jones published a series of papers providing sequential algorithms that are key to reconstructability analysis. These algorithms include the determination of unbiased reconstructions and a greedy algorithm for a generalization of the reconstruction problem. The implementation of these sequential algorithms provide scientists and mathematicians with the means of utilizing reconstructability analysis in systems modeling. The algorithms, however, are so computationally intensive that the system is limited to a very small set of variables. Many papers have been written applying reconstructability analysis and maximum entropy methods to various disciplines. Reconstructability analysis has the potential of dramatically impacting the scientific community, …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Aminoalkylcarbamoyl Cellulosics., Doris Ann Culberson Jan 1995

Synthesis And Characterization Of Aminoalkylcarbamoyl Cellulosics., Doris Ann Culberson

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The synthesis and characterization of chitin analogs based on water soluble amino cellulose derivatives are described. This family of derivatives exhibits properties suitable for applications as biodegradable carriers for pharmacons and agricultural chemicals, and production of high molecular weight polymeric quaternary salts. The chemical and physical properties of the group of amino cellulose derivatives prepared from the amidation of methyl carboxymethyl cellulose or the aminolysis of cyanoethylated cellulose with different diamines are analyzed. Converting the carboxy-methyl cellulose to a methyl ester produces a derivative more receptive to amidation. When the methyl carboxyl-methyl cellulose is treated with an excess of diamines, …

Bamboo Specialization In Amazonian Birds., Andrew Ward Kratter Jan 1995

Bamboo Specialization In Amazonian Birds., Andrew Ward Kratter

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

By spot-mapping territories of lowland forest birds in southeastern Peru, 19 "bamboo specialists" were documented to be restricted to thickets of bamboo (Guadua weberbaueri). Six specialists are restricted to thickets throughout their entire geographic range (obligate bamboo users); seven specialists may use other habitats sparingly away from southeastern Peru (near-obligate bamboo users); the remaining six species are frequent users of habitats lacking bamboo in area besides southeastern Peru (facultative bamboo users). The 19 specialists, all insectivorous, were classified into five guilds based on foraging maneuver and substrate preferences: four sallying tyrannid species; four arboreal antbirds; four stem-searching specialists; four dead-leaf-searching …
