A Normative Study Of The Diagnostic Assessment For The Severely Handicapped (Dash) Scale., Martha Lyle Hamilton Jan 1995

A Normative Study Of The Diagnostic Assessment For The Severely Handicapped (Dash) Scale., Martha Lyle Hamilton

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The prevalence of psychopathology in a large institutionalized population (N = 1259) of individuals with severe and profound mental retardation was examined, using the Diagnostic Assessment for the Severely Handicapped (DASH) scale. Over 60% of the sample exhibited at least one form of disorder according to newly established DASH criteria. Forty percent exhibited two or more disorders. Differences between severely and profoundly mentally retarded groups were found, especially in terms of the duration of symptoms. Profoundly mentally retarded persons had significantly more persistent symptoms. Items were examined for frequency and duration, and items of critical importance to diagnosis were identified. …

Flow Cytometric Analysis Of Avian Blood Cells: Differentiation Of Erythrocytes And Leukocytes By Fluorescence., William Weaver King Jan 1995

Flow Cytometric Analysis Of Avian Blood Cells: Differentiation Of Erythrocytes And Leukocytes By Fluorescence., William Weaver King

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Automated analyzers have revolutionized diagnostic hematology in mammalian species. These commercial instruments utilize flow cytometric technology to enumerate blood cell concentrations. Because of the nuclei present in most non-mammalian erythrocytes and thrombocytes, these instruments are unable to calculate leukocyte counts in birds, amphibians, reptiles, and fish. These investigations sought to determine if three commonly used methodologies in flow cytometry could sufficiently differentiate avian erythrocytes, leukocytes, and thrombocytes, and ultimately form a basis for performing total leukocyte counts. Fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) and thiazole orange (TO) were used to stain samples of whole, erythrocyte-, and leukocyte-enriched chicken blood. Although fluorescent microscopic and …

The Interview For The Diagnosis Of Eating Disorders-Iv: Application To Dsm-Iv Diagnostic Criteria., Vesna Kutlesic Jan 1995

The Interview For The Diagnosis Of Eating Disorders-Iv: Application To Dsm-Iv Diagnostic Criteria., Vesna Kutlesic

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The standard diagnostic system in the United States, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual III-Revised, has recently been revised (i.e., DSM-IV) to include recent research and clinical advances that have enabled further specification of the existing diagnostic criteria. One set of diagnostic criteria that is representative of this increased specification are the criteria for the eating disorders. The expansion of these criteria in the recent publication of DSM-IV creates a need for the development of a structured interview that would enable differential diagnosis among these diagnostic categories. Thus, the purpose of the current study was to develop and evaluate the psychometric …

The Politics Of Decolonization: Race, Power, And Ideology In Contemporary American Drama., Byung-Eon Jung Jan 1995

The Politics Of Decolonization: Race, Power, And Ideology In Contemporary American Drama., Byung-Eon Jung

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation traces the politics of decolonization dramatized in selected plays from the contemporary American playwrights: African Americans (Lorraine Hansberry, Amiri Baraka, Adrienne Kennedy, and August Wilson), white Americans (Arthur Kopit and David Rabe), and a Chinese American (David Hwang). Through the application of cultural theory to an analysis of dramatic texts, I demonstrate how the plays enact the struggle for decolonization on social, political, and cultural levels. In keeping with the interactions of race, power, and ideology, the plays deconstruct the white cultural formulations of racial minorities. I explore the ways in which the playwrights reclaim the authority of …

The Determination Of A Matroid's Structure From Properties Of Certain Large Minors., Allan Donald Mills Jan 1995

The Determination Of A Matroid's Structure From Properties Of Certain Large Minors., Allan Donald Mills

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation solves some problems related to the structure of matroids. In Chapter 2, we prove that if M and N are distinct connected matroids on a common ground set E, where $\vert E\vert \ge 2,$ and, for every e in $E,\ M\\ e = N\\ e$ or M/e = N/e, then one of M and N is a relaxation of the other. In addition, we determine the matroids M and N on a common ground set E such that, for every pair of elements $\{ e,f\}$ of E, at least two of the four corresponding minors of M and …

Further Evaluation Of The Psychometric Properties Of The Toddler Behavior Screening Inventory., Alyson Powell Mccain Jan 1995

Further Evaluation Of The Psychometric Properties Of The Toddler Behavior Screening Inventory., Alyson Powell Mccain

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Many children display problematic behavior during the toddler period (12 to 41 months). Although many behavior problems are transient, some children continue to have difficulties through school age and beyond. Recent literature has identified risk factors correlated with continuity of behavior problems. Early identification and intervention with these children may reduce the likelihood of long-term difficulties. The first step in detecting children with problematic behavior is screening. The Toddler Behavior Screening Inventory (TBSI) is a 40-item instrument designed to be used for the rapid assessment of maternal-perceived toddler behavior problems. The present study further evaluated the psychometric properties of the …

Multiplicities And Transforms Of Ideals., Juan Antonio Nido Valencia Jan 1995

Multiplicities And Transforms Of Ideals., Juan Antonio Nido Valencia

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Let (R, M$\sb{\rm R})$ be a regular local ring of dimension 3 of the form k (x,y,z) $\sb{\rm (x,y,z)},$ where k is an algebraically closed field and let I be an M$\sb{\rm R}$-primary ideal that admits generators. We prove that if I$\sb1$ is the proper transform of I to a quadratic transform (A, M$\sb{\rm A})$ of(R, M$\sb{\rm R})$ such that the analytic spread of I$\sb1$ is 3 and the generators of I$\sb1$ induced by those of I satisfy certain divisibility conditions, then the inequality of multiplicities$$\rm e\sb{A}(M(I\sb1)) < e\sb{R}(I)$$is valid, where M $\rm(I\sb1) \supseteq I\sb1$ is an M$\sb{\rm A}$-primary ideal associated to I$\sb1$ (the ideal I$\sb1$ may not be M$\sb{\rm A}$-primary if dim (R) = 3) through an operation M that we define for ideals in a regular local ring.

Race And The Fragmented Self In Twentieth-Century American Literature., Jerold Malcolm Martin Jan 1995

Race And The Fragmented Self In Twentieth-Century American Literature., Jerold Malcolm Martin

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Beginning with a definition of "race" as a system of discourse about human difference sustained by its symbolic articulations, I approach "race" as analogous to the social disciplines that Foucault describes as constructing the modern subject. Bringing together certain speculations of Lacan, Fanon, and Morrison, I suggest that this racial discipline facilitates a racial "mirror stage" through which "blackness" and "whiteness" are projected as distinct and unified conceptions of identity. My readings of representative texts examine how such racial identity patterns are both seductive as resolutions of self-discord and destructive in tension with the multiple, interpersonal, and historical determinations of …

The King And His People In The Discourse Of The Ancien Capitaine., Jerry A. Micelle Jan 1995

The King And His People In The Discourse Of The Ancien Capitaine., Jerry A. Micelle

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The linkage between king and people in the discourse of the ancien capitaine is based on the dual roles of the captain as an intermediary representing the people to the king and as a royal officer commissioned by the king to exercise royal sovereignty. Maritime captains, Indian chiefs, and French missionaries participated in a discourse that advanced and nurtured the village leader and post captains as links between France and New France, between the king in the old world and his people in the new. Tracing the development of the diplomatic language in New France and observing the old Canadian …

Elongational Rheometry Of Coextruded Polymer Melts., Ajit Vijay Pendse Jan 1995

Elongational Rheometry Of Coextruded Polymer Melts., Ajit Vijay Pendse

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In most key polymer processing operations such as fiber spinning, blow molding and extrusion through a converging die, the dominant mode of flow is elongational. Rheological characterization of polymeric materials in elongational flow is critical for material quality control as well as for process modeling applications. Unlike shear flows, which have been studied extensively, elongational flows are not well understood, primarily due to the experimental difficulties involved in generating a pure and steady elongational flow field. There is a dearth of commercially available elongational rheometers in the present rheological literature; those that are commercially available, are useful only at elongational …

Attraction Vs. Repulsion: The Narrative Ambivalence Of Gender In Byron's "Don Juan"., Melinda A. Piontek Jan 1995

Attraction Vs. Repulsion: The Narrative Ambivalence Of Gender In Byron's "Don Juan"., Melinda A. Piontek

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Previous studies of gender in Byron's Don Juan, such as those by Susan Wolfson and Louis Crompton, have concentrated primarily on identifying gender ambivalence and attributing that ambivalence to factors outside the text, such as Byron's ambivalence toward his personal homoeroticism as well as to the social attitudes of Regency England toward questions of gender ambiguity. In this dissertation, I propose to turn the critical gaze back to the text in order to go beyond identifying gender ambivalence to track how that ambivalence works within Don Juan. In order to bring into focus the serial and episodic nature of Byron's …

Changes Of Antioxidants And Fatty Acid Composition In Stabilized Rice Bran During Storage., Taisun Shin Jan 1995

Changes Of Antioxidants And Fatty Acid Composition In Stabilized Rice Bran During Storage., Taisun Shin

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The effects of extrusion temperature and post extrusion holding time, microwave heating, and gamma irradiation on antioxidants and lipid composition in rice bran were studied. Post extrusion holding time had no apparent effect on rice bran stability. Increased holding times reduced (p $<$ 0.05) total vitamin E. Oryzanol concentration was lower (p $<$ 0.05) only with 6 min holding time. Inactivation of lipolytic enzymes was obtained by extrusion temperatures of 120, 130, and 140$\sp\circ$C. Increased extrusion temperatures reduced the retention of vitamin E and oryzanol during storage. An extrusion temperature of 110$\sp\circ$C provided the highest retention of vitamin E and oryzanol during storage although FFA level was higher (p $<$ 0.05) than that of the other extrusion temperatures from 105 to 375 days. There were no significant (p $>$ 0.05) decreases in individual vitamin E vitamers until 4 min microwave heating. After 8 min heating, individual E vitamers decreased significantly (p $$ 0.05) in FFA level by 24 weeks of storage with microwave heating for 12 min. Microwave heating for 4, 8, and 12 min did not provided adequate inactivation of lipolytic enzymes. Total vitamin …

A Study Of The Relationship Among Teacher, Process, And Outcome Variables Within School-Based Consultation., Katherine Frances Wickstrom Jan 1995

A Study Of The Relationship Among Teacher, Process, And Outcome Variables Within School-Based Consultation., Katherine Frances Wickstrom

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study investigated the relationship among several teacher, process, and outcome variables within school-based consultation. A total of 32 consultant-consultee dyads participated in the study until completion of a problem identification interview, a problem analysis interview, and a follow-up session. Four types of data were collected. First, sessions were tape recorded and coded to examine the effect of an "expert" versus a "collaborative" interaction style. Second, teachers completed paper and pencil measures pertaining to (a) attributions of child behavior, (b) preferred service delivery, (c) severity of behavior problem, (d) consultant verbal interactions, (e) treatment acceptability, and (f) teacher satisfaction. Third, …

Encoding Imperialism: Homelessness In American Naturalism, 1890-1918., Janet M. Whyde Jan 1995

Encoding Imperialism: Homelessness In American Naturalism, 1890-1918., Janet M. Whyde

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Homelessness occurs with uncommon regularity in the works of American naturalists, and in each case, the result of a character's homelessness results in a crisis of social identity and self definition. This pattern recurs in the works of the canonically identified naturalists, such as Stephen Crane, Frank Norris, and Theodore Dreiser, as well as other writers who have only been tangentially associated with naturalism--Edith Wharton and Paul Laurence Dunbar, for example. In this study, I analyze the relationship between homelessness as it is represented in the novels and the political debate over the United States's imperialist aspirations at the turn …

Differentiation Of Tobacco Etch Virus Strains Affecting Pepper., Indra Ariyaratne Jan 1995

Differentiation Of Tobacco Etch Virus Strains Affecting Pepper., Indra Ariyaratne

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Tobacco etch virus (TEV) causes an important viral disease of pepper (Capsicum spp.) in the Western Hemisphere. In this study, 36 isolates of TEV from the United States, Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America, and South America were mechanically inoculated in the greenhouse to selected pepper lines reported to have resistance to one or more TEV isolates. Goals of the research were to evaluate reactions of the resistant pepper lines to the TEV isolates, and to determine if the TEV isolates could be grouped into pathotypes based on their reactions in pepper lines chosen as differentials during the course of the …

Psychological Well-Being As A Predictor Of Adaptive Behavior In Older Adults., Heather Casper Jahnke Jan 1995

Psychological Well-Being As A Predictor Of Adaptive Behavior In Older Adults., Heather Casper Jahnke

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Six dimensions of psychological well-being were used to predict effective coping across three context domains. Participants rated themselves on dimensions of psychological well-being and the coping behaviors used for problems they reported in a health, financial, and isolation or loss of relationship context. For each participant, a close friend or family member also rated them along the same six dimensions to provide an alternate measure of well-being. The criteria for effective coping was based on the use of emotion-focused coping in situations perceived as uncontrollable and problem-focused coping in situations perceived as controllable. Results indicated that the personal growth dimension …

Sallie Rhett Roman (1844-1921): A New Orleans Woman Writer., Nancy Dixon Jan 1995

Sallie Rhett Roman (1844-1921): A New Orleans Woman Writer., Nancy Dixon

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Roman was a New Orleans writer who contributed political editorials and works of fiction to the New Orleans Times Democrat for nearly twenty years beginning in 1891. She was a culturally-aware intellectual woman of the nineteenth century, and her works offer a clearer picture of the political, cultural, and historical post-Reconstruction South. In my extensive scholarly investigation of Roman's work, I began to realize that it was not enough to write about her life and works without making the primary texts, which are hidden away on microfilm in the rare book rooms of South Louisiana, accessible to scholars of Southern …

Locally Generated Semigroups., Genaro Segundo Gonzalez Jan 1995

Locally Generated Semigroups., Genaro Segundo Gonzalez

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

For a topological semigroup S, Lawson constructed a semigroup $\Gamma(S)$ with the property that any local homomorphism defined in a neighborhood of the identity of S to a topological semigroup T extends uniquely to a global homomorphism defined on $\Gamma(S).$ In this work we obtain conditions on S to topologize the semigroup $\Gamma(S)$ via an uniformity such that the extended homomorphism is continuous and such that $\Gamma(S)$ is a topological semigroup. We also investigate a different approach of the problem via the relatively free semigroup RF(U) where U is a suitable neighborhood of the identity of S and show that …

Consultant Effectiveness And Treatment Acceptability: An Examination Of Consultee Requests And Consultant Responses., Dinah Stuart Graham Jan 1995

Consultant Effectiveness And Treatment Acceptability: An Examination Of Consultee Requests And Consultant Responses., Dinah Stuart Graham

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Consultation is a process whereby a consultant (e.g., a psychologist) works with a direct caregiver (e.g., a teacher) to provide services to a client (e.g., a child). There has emerged a very strong supposition in the literature and in practice that consultation be a collaborative venture between co-equal professionals. Although a collaborative approach has been generally assumed beneficial, an emerging body of research is calling this into question. Further explication of the collaborative process is needed. Commonly held notions of "collaborative behavior" and "expert behavior" may be misleading, or inaccurate. This study was designed to elucidate the collaborative process. Teachers …

Oral Noetic And The Communicative Rubric In "Beowulf"., Paul David Muller Jan 1995

Oral Noetic And The Communicative Rubric In "Beowulf"., Paul David Muller

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Theoretically, this treatise is a study at the nexus of two fields: oral tradition and the philosophy of language. In application, it is a "reading" of the Anglo-Saxon epic narrative of Beowulf. It proceeds from the hypothesis that in its present, performative moment, the oral traditional narrative instantiates a moment of communicative meaning evincing characteristics of oral, thus speakerly, and thus intention-vitalized meaning, as defined by linguistic philosophers Austin, Grice, Searle, Schiffer, Strawson, and others. In the light of this theoretical perspective, the oral noetic and thus the communicative moment of the Beowulf poem is sought in its most dynamic …

A Synthesis Of Resource And Governance Theories In The Context Of Horizontal Expansion Strategies., James Gayle Combs Jan 1995

A Synthesis Of Resource And Governance Theories In The Context Of Horizontal Expansion Strategies., James Gayle Combs

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Extant literature has yet to fully examine the antecedents to, and performance implications of, horizontal expansion strategies. Defined as strategies that increase a firm's domain within an industry, these business level strategies constitute an important component of a firm's overall scope. This study takes a complementary view of two theories of the firm--resource theory and governance theory--in order to explain horizontal strategy and performance. An empirical investigation of 101 restaurant chains shows that firms respond to governance cost pressures when choosing among alternative horizontal strategies, except when strategically valuable resource stocks are low. However, no clear link was found between …

Aerobic Fitness And Leisure Physical Activity As Moderators Of The Stress-Illness Relation., Cindy Lynn Carmack Jan 1995

Aerobic Fitness And Leisure Physical Activity As Moderators Of The Stress-Illness Relation., Cindy Lynn Carmack

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study examined exercise as a moderator of the stress-illness relation by exploring leisure physical activity and aerobic fitness as "buffers" of the effects stress has on physical and psychological symptoms in a sample of 135 college students. Specifically, the goal was to provide information regarding the mechanisms by which exercise exhibits its "buffering effects" against minor stress. It was questioned as to whether both increased aerobic fitness associated with exercise and actual participation in the activity itself were necessary for the apparent buffering effects exercise has on stress or is one factor more important than the other. Existing data …

Biogeographic, Ecological, And Evolutionary Aspects Of South American Austral Migration, With Special Reference To The Family Tyrannidae., Robert Terry Chesser Jan 1995

Biogeographic, Ecological, And Evolutionary Aspects Of South American Austral Migration, With Special Reference To The Family Tyrannidae., Robert Terry Chesser

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

South American austral migrants are bird species that breed in temperate South America in the southern summer and migrate north, towards or into northern South America, for the southern winter. Austral migration is similar to other avian migration systems in many ways, but its uniquely South American locale is reflected geographically by the relatively short-distance migrations of most austral migrants, and taxonomically by the numerical dominance of the suboscine family Tyrannidae (the tyrant-flycatchers), of which more than 70 species migrate. Detailed examination of the distributions of austral migrant flycatchers revealed that each is to some extent unique, but that discernible …

The Pathogenesis Of Equine Endometritis Due To Streptococcus Zooepidemicus., Robert Crawford Causey Jan 1995

The Pathogenesis Of Equine Endometritis Due To Streptococcus Zooepidemicus., Robert Crawford Causey

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The ability of uterine isolates of Streptococcus zooepidemicus to resist phagocytosis was explored by the organism's ability to grow in equine fresh blood. Although isolates grew in fresh blood of many horses, any given isolate was killed by blood of certain horses. Killing required leukocytes, heat labile and heat stable components of plasma and appeared to follow phagocytosis of the organism by neutrophils. This led to the working hypothesis that killing was mediated by phagocytosis requiring complement and isolate-specific antibody to variable surface antigens. Variation in killing between horses was attributed to differences in circulating isolate-specific antibody. This is a …

A Social Skills Measure For Adults With Mild Or Moderate Mental Retardation: Development Of The Measure Of Observable Social Skills (Moss)., Debra Farrar-Schneider Jan 1995

A Social Skills Measure For Adults With Mild Or Moderate Mental Retardation: Development Of The Measure Of Observable Social Skills (Moss)., Debra Farrar-Schneider

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The literature on the history, definition, etiology, and assessment of social skills in mentally retarded adults was reviewed and the lack of adequate assessment measures was noted. Given the importance of social skills for mentally retarded individuals, especially in the area of community adjustment (e.g., residential and vocational placements), a behavioral checklist to assess these skills was developed. The Measure of Observable Social Skills (MOSS) was derived from reviewing social skills assessment and treatment literature, questionnaires, rating scales, and checklists. Two forms, each containing 47 different items, were developed and completed by caregivers of 212 mild to mentally retarded adults. …

The Church In Post-Transition Societies: Evidence From Eastern Europe., Mary L. Gautier Jan 1995

The Church In Post-Transition Societies: Evidence From Eastern Europe., Mary L. Gautier

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

I explore the relationship between religious affiliation and support for democratic values in postcommunist societies. Using the Tocquevillian idea of the institutional learning of democratic values within civil society, I examine three post-transition countries of Eastern Europe for evidence that the churches preserved and promoted democratic values during the years of Soviet regime control. Comparative historical examination of the relationship between the institutional churches and the state during the years of communist regime control demonstrate how the churches worked to preserve and promote democratic values. In those countries where the churches were marginalized and excluded from power by the state …

Using Drawing Tasks To Communicate Ideas About Photosynthesis: A Conceptual Change Strategy For Use In The Elementary School Classroom., Byron Levy Launey Jan 1995

Using Drawing Tasks To Communicate Ideas About Photosynthesis: A Conceptual Change Strategy For Use In The Elementary School Classroom., Byron Levy Launey

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

It is difficult for a teacher to determine if a learner has acquired an accurate concept of the topic being taught. Most of the children in this study had sufficient language skills to communicate successfully with their teachers even though they held inappropriate concepts of photosynthesis. This study examined the use of drawing tasks to assess children's ideas related to photosynthesis in an elementary-grade classroom. Two research questions guided the study to determine if this strategy was a valid improvement over traditional methods of classroom instruction. The first question asked if elementary-grade students receiving instruction about photosynthesis would acquire and …

The Influence Of Subject Sophistication On The Ability To Feign Mild Head Injury Symptoms., Roy Clayton Martin Jan 1995

The Influence Of Subject Sophistication On The Ability To Feign Mild Head Injury Symptoms., Roy Clayton Martin

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The present study examined the effects that personal experience with head injury, task specific instruction and brain injury knowledge have on the ability to feign postconcussion symptoms and neuropsychological performance patterns seen in mild head injured patients. A sample of non-head injured and head injured college students served as the experimental subjects. These subjects were randomly assigned to conditions in which they were told to either do their best, feign deficits consistent with mild head injury without task specific instruction, or feign deficits while given task specific instruction. Subjects were also classified into one of two head injury knowledge groups …

A Validation Study Of The Adolescent Behavior Checklist Using Clinical And Non-Clinical Samples., Christina Duncan Adams Jan 1995

A Validation Study Of The Adolescent Behavior Checklist Using Clinical And Non-Clinical Samples., Christina Duncan Adams

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the discriminant validity of scores from the Adolescent Behavior Checklist (ABC), an adolescent self-report measure of ADHD symptomatology for adolescents ages 11-17 years (n = 60). Validity was assessed through correlational, univariate, and discriminant function analyses using three groups: (1) adolescents diagnosed with ADHD; (2) adolescents currently experiencing a mood and/or anxiety disorder; and (3) adolescents with no major psychological disorder. Convergent and divergent validity of the ABC factor scores was demonstrated through correlational results with: (1) parent- and adolescent-report of ADHD symptoms during structured psychiatric interviews; and, (2) scores on questionnaires …

Seen And Unseen Cities: Embodied Worlds In Epic And The Novel., Eamon G. Halpin Jan 1995

Seen And Unseen Cities: Embodied Worlds In Epic And The Novel., Eamon G. Halpin

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

By all accounts, the city has ceased to function as a cosmos, a coherent world which can offer meaning and validity to the lives of its inhabitants. If the ancient city presented the very image of order, the city since the advent of the Industrial Revolution has appeared to us as a jungle, a wilderness, a wasteland, an endless labyrinth--all images which suggest an essentially chaotic space, one which lacks any organizing principle or rationale. Moreover, if the city once offered the individual the greatest possible realization of his freedom, it now appears as the space in which he is …
