Ethnicity Toward Multiculturalism: Socio-Spatial Relations Of The Korean Community In Honolulu, 1903-1940., Youngmin Lee
Ethnicity Toward Multiculturalism: Socio-Spatial Relations Of The Korean Community In Honolulu, 1903-1940., Youngmin Lee
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This research deals with the dynamic ethnic socio-spatial relations and the transformation of ethnic identities in the early-twentieth-century Honolulu, mainly focusing on the Korean community. Against the widely spread notion that the ethnic relations of Honolulu in those days were little associated with the racist ideology which was prevalent in the contemporary mainland cities, this research shows that white-supremacy ideology had exerted strong influence on the minority groups in Honolulu all the way through their immigration and settling-down process. Although Honolulu included a balanced population among several ethnic groups and thus had no ethnic division of "majority" and "minority" in …
Interpretation Of Ambiguous Body-Related Stimuli In The Eating Disorders., Lori Ann Perrin
Interpretation Of Ambiguous Body-Related Stimuli In The Eating Disorders., Lori Ann Perrin
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Clinical observations suggest that persons with an eating disorder are obsessed about body size and shape. This obsession with body size and shape has been hypothesized to lead to biased processing of body related information. Recent research indicates that individuals who are highly preoccupied with their weight tend to react to body related stimuli with negative emotions and tend to infer a negative meaning when information about their own body shape is presented within an ambiguous context. This study investigated this type of judgment bias in eating disorder and body dysphoric subjects. In addition, this study examined the ability to …
Re: (Writing) Desire In "Fragments D'Un Discours Amoureux" By Roland Barthes And "La Carte Postale" By Jacques Derrida., Laura Elizabeth Volpe
Re: (Writing) Desire In "Fragments D'Un Discours Amoureux" By Roland Barthes And "La Carte Postale" By Jacques Derrida., Laura Elizabeth Volpe
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation examines the way in which Roland Barthes and Jacques Derrida rework the psychoanalytical constructions of desire through what can be referred to, short of a better word, as play or gaming. Play takes many forms in these two texts; etymological play and structural play are two of the more prominent manifestations of this gaming. In an effort to analyze and at the same time emulate this play and its use by these two authors, I introduce the idea of the dreidel which functions as a device which objectifies the discourse of desire. It also serves as a physical …
Mathematical Problems In Elasticity And Quantum Mechanics., Genbao Shi
Mathematical Problems In Elasticity And Quantum Mechanics., Genbao Shi
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This thesis is concerned with new mathematical contributions to this area of mathematical physics. It consists of two parts. The first part discusses Pauli uniqueness problem in the content of locally compact abelian groups. We get improved results for $R\sp{n}$, new results for $T\sp{n}$ and $Z\sb{n}$. In the second part which is the main part of the thesis, we develop a new approach to the scattering for Nth order factored equations based on an abstract version of d'Alembert's formula. We show that the asymptotic equivalence (or scattering theory) of the pair of higher order factored equations reduces to the asymptotic …
Study Of Two Instrumental Variable Methods For Closed-Loop Multivariable System Identification., Jeannette Santos-Cordero
Study Of Two Instrumental Variable Methods For Closed-Loop Multivariable System Identification., Jeannette Santos-Cordero
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
New control strategies are based on the model of the process and it is thus necessary to identify the systems to be controlled. It is also often necessary to identify them during closed-loop operation in order to maintain efficient operation and product quality. Some results of multivariable closed-loop identification carried out on a simulated 2 x 2 linear time-invariant system, using two new versions of instrumental variable methods called IV4D and IV4UP as the identification methods, are presented. In each case pseudorandom binary signals (PRBS), or dithers, are applied to the outputs of the feedback controllers. Algorithms IV4D and IV4UP …
An Empirical Analysis Of Criteria Utilized To Determine Hospital Revenue Bond Ratings., Ann L. Watkins
An Empirical Analysis Of Criteria Utilized To Determine Hospital Revenue Bond Ratings., Ann L. Watkins
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The hospital industry has undergone radical changes in the past fifteen years with respect to the production and distribution of health care services. The introduction of Medicare's prospective payment system, the struggle to retain physicians and competitive bidding for managed care contracts have created increasing risks for hospitals. Coupled with the increased amount of debt sold by health care issuers, these changes have made determining the information utilized in predicting hospital revenue bond ratings a topic of significant interest to investors, creditors and regulators. The primary purpose of this study was to develop an initial model which might be used …
Use Of A Natural Swamp For Wastewater Treatment., Xiaowei Zhang
Use Of A Natural Swamp For Wastewater Treatment., Xiaowei Zhang
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The purposes of this research were to determine the possibility of using a natural forested swamp for advanced wastewater treatment in coastal Louisiana, and to evaluate the wastewater impact on the ecosystem. The study was performed by comparing two portions of a nutrient deficient swamp separated by a ridge. One portion received secondarily treated municipal wastewater at a rate of $6.3\times10\sp6$ L/day and the other served as a control. Concentrations of BOD$\sb5$, TSS, DO, EC, TDS, pH, N, P, S, CI, K, Ca, Mg, Na and trace metals were monitored. Results showed that the wastewater added nutrients into the swamp. …

This study aimed to: (1) establish a set of optimally configured guidelines for performance testing of crawfish sorting machines; (2) examine biophysical characteristics of crawfish and machine-related design parameters; and, (3) write computer programs covering the essential aspects of the crawfish sorting process. Three crawfish sorting machines were tested in the Spring of 1994 and 1995: (1) cylindrical roller sorter machine, (2) diverging vane belt sorter machine, and (3) grid shaker sorter machine. Both the cylindrical roller sorter and the diverging vane belt sorter separated crawfish into four groups: peeler, medium, large and jumbo; the grid shaker sorter, however, separated …
The Effects Of Shear Stress On The Crystallization Kinetics Of Syndiotactic Polystyrene., Douglas Henry Krzystowczyk
The Effects Of Shear Stress On The Crystallization Kinetics Of Syndiotactic Polystyrene., Douglas Henry Krzystowczyk
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Industrial polymer processes involve the application of heat and stress, often resulting in deformations at high shear rates and molecular orientation. This affects both the crystallization rates and the melting temperature of semi-crystalline polymers. Knowledge of the variance of these properties are vital commercially due to their effect on processing techniques, production rates and mechanical properties. An experimental apparatus was designed and constructed that allowed the study of the effects of shear on syndiotactic polystyrene melt samples. This apparatus consisted of a parallel plate rheometer that used changes in shear stress, as well as infrared detection equipment that utilized changes …
Simultaneous Water-Gas Shift Reaction And Carbon Dioxide Separation For Direct Hydrogen Production From Synthesis Gas., Chun Han
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The simultaneous water-gas shift and CaO-carbonation reactions for the direct hydrogen production from synthesis gas have been studied at high temperature and high pressure using a laboratory-scale fixed-bed reactor. Experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of process parameters--temperature, pressure, gas composition, and space velocity--on system performance during both calcination and shift/carbonation reaction stages. Commercial dolomite was chosen as the primary sorbent while two limestones were tested for comparison. Multicycle tests were conducted to evaluate sorbent durability. Sorbent structure and structural changes associated with reaction were measured using mercury porosimeter. The experiments proved the technical feasibility of combining the shift …
Mechanisms Of Chemically-Induced Hepatocarcinogenesis In Western Mosquitofish (Gambusia Affinis)., Jerry Mchugh Law Jr
Mechanisms Of Chemically-Induced Hepatocarcinogenesis In Western Mosquitofish (Gambusia Affinis)., Jerry Mchugh Law Jr
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A need exists for fish sentinel species for monitoring environmental changes. These studies were performed to examine the suitability of western mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis) as a sentinel species and to explore basic mechanisms of hepatocarcinogenesis. Neoplastic lesions were induced in laboratory-reared mosquitofish fry and adults using single pulse exposures to 1 or 10 ppm methylazoxymethanol acetate. Early changes in the liver of exposed fish included severe cytotoxicity, megalocytosis, and widespread apoptosis. Neoplastic changes were found in the liver in approximately 20% of the exposed fish by 8 weeks after exposure and increased to approximately 70% by 41 weeks. These included …
The Transcendental Element In The Absent Presence., Maggie Burnaman Martin
The Transcendental Element In The Absent Presence., Maggie Burnaman Martin
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
"The Transcendental Element in the Absent Presence" analyzes the absent presence, the rhetorical and literary states of being there in the mind of the perceiving individual, though not there physically. It seeks to answer: What does the term "absent presence" mean? Is there a difference between rhetorical and literary absent presences? If so, how is each manifest through the reading process? And, what sustains these absent presences? Evidenced through selected works of Plato, Aristotle, New Testament writers, Sidney, Shakespeare, and Dickinson, the study argues for the intellectually, spiritually, or aesthetically transcendent quality of the absent presence. Any encounter between reader, …
Factors Influencing The Intention To Choose A Physical Or An Applied Science Track In College: A Ghanaian District-Level Study., James Adu Opare
Factors Influencing The Intention To Choose A Physical Or An Applied Science Track In College: A Ghanaian District-Level Study., James Adu Opare
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of the study was to identify the determinants of Ghanaian senior secondary school students' intentions to choose their college majors from the physical and applied sciences. The specific objectives were, first, to find out if males and females are equally likely to major in the physical and applied sciences, and second, to find out if the sex composition of the school a student attends can have an influence on his or her inclination toward the subjects in question. Through paper-and-pencil questionnaires, data for the study were collected in summer 1994, from a sample of 624 12th graders drawn …

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The specific aim of this project was to determine the efficacy of an integrated approach to remediation of oral language and reading. Communicative Reading Strategies (CRS) (Norris, 1985) was used with a group of twenty-one high-risk first grade students. Improvements were measured for aspects of language development that are specifically related to success in oral language use and reading. Nine children demonstrating below average performance on standardized measures assessing language and reading received intervention. A control group of 12 matched children served to control for changes as a result of maturation or general curriculum effect. The treatment group received intervention …
Henry James And The Process Of Autobiography., Paul S. Nielsen
Henry James And The Process Of Autobiography., Paul S. Nielsen
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
James's autobiographies differ from most by dramatizing so extensively the process of recovery and reanimation of memory, the act that signifies autobiographical activity. They therefore reveal a great deal about the generic nature of autobiographical recollection. James's Major Phase, from 1900 to his death in 1916, was chiefly and gloriously autobiographical in purpose and crowns his career with an autobiographical production of astonishing variety, extent, and creativity. The proto-autobiographical material includes biography of a culture (William Wetmore Story and His Friends), travel memoir and cultural analysis (The American Scene), and recapitulation and intimate disclosure of his creative life (the Prefaces …
Link Theory: Applications To Real Algebraic Curves., Stephen Patrick Paris
Link Theory: Applications To Real Algebraic Curves., Stephen Patrick Paris
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Hilbert in his sixteenth problem asks us to study the topology of real algebraic varieties. There are many equalities, inequalities, and congruences associated to a real algebraic curve. Extremal properties have been derived for many of the inequalities. In 1980, V. A. Rokhlin derived two inequalities associated to a real algebraic curve. In this dissertation we use methods developed by P. Gilmer to rederive Rokhlin's inequalities. Using these methods we then derive an extremal property for one of the inequalities. Although this extremal property was not studied by Rokhlin, we also show that Rokhlin's ideas can be utilized to prove …

On Some Problems In The Algebraic Theory Of Quadratic Forms., Hamza Y. Ahmad
On Some Problems In The Algebraic Theory Of Quadratic Forms., Hamza Y. Ahmad
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This work consists of results on three questions in the algebraic theory of forms. The first question deals with characterizing the Witt kernel (i.e. the anisotropic non-singular quadratic forms over that become hyperbolic) over a given field extension. For separable quadratic and bi-quadratic extension this is well known (for example see (B1, 4.2 and 4.3), (B2, p. 121), (L, p. 200), (ELW, 2.12)). In chapter 2, we provide answers to this question for inseparable quadratic and bi-quadratic extensions. We provide theorem 2.1.5, which in particular answers question 4.4 in (B2). From this result we prove the excellence property for inseparable …
Behavioral And Morphological Development Of Immature Hawaiian Freshwater Fishes., David Chestine Tate
Behavioral And Morphological Development Of Immature Hawaiian Freshwater Fishes., David Chestine Tate
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Studies of recent fish collections from 17 streams on four islands in Hawai'i provided key characteristics for species identification of immature forms of five native species of freshwater gobioids. Young Eleotris sandwicensis lack fused pelvic fins. A suborbital bar identifies Stenogobius hawaiiensis. Awaous guamensis can be distinguished by lack of notches in the upper lip, Lentipes concolor by a single median notch, and Sicyopterus stimpsoni by three notches. Recruitment from oceanic plankton occurred year round but peaked from February to April. Lentipes invaded streams mainly during the day with the wave surge; Sicyopterus entered mostly during the day regardless of …
The Relationship Between Daily Stress And Neuropsychological Test Performance., Mark Edward Todd
The Relationship Between Daily Stress And Neuropsychological Test Performance., Mark Edward Todd
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Much research has focused on identifying the causes and risk factors associated with Alzheimer's disease (AD). Surprisingly, stress, which has been implicated in the course of a variety of other diseases, has been generally ignored in research on AD despite the fact that several different areas lend indirect support for a relationship between stress and the progression of AD. In this study, the effect of daily stress on the clinical course of AD was examined. Also, given that no study has examined the effects of daily stress on neuropsychological test performance, this relationship was examined as well. Forty-five out-patients with …
Direct United States Military Intervention: The Essentials For Success In The Post-Cold War Era., Glenn Joseph Antizzo
Direct United States Military Intervention: The Essentials For Success In The Post-Cold War Era., Glenn Joseph Antizzo
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Direct U.S. military intervention in the Third World featured prominently in American foreign policy during the post-World War II era. However, the Cold War placed restraints on where and how Washington could intervene. The collapse of the former Soviet Union appears to have removed many of the barriers to, if not the ideological justifications for, American intervention. Since the end of the Cold War, the United States has militarily intervened in several countries. However, these post-Cold War interventions seem to be guided by different motives than those traditionally given. Likewise, such operations, now free from the fear of counter-intervention by …
Interactions Of Weeds, Herbicides, And Aerial Blight (Rhizoctonia Solani) In Soybeans., Bryan David Black
Interactions Of Weeds, Herbicides, And Aerial Blight (Rhizoctonia Solani) In Soybeans., Bryan David Black
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Field studies evaluated soybean response to Rhizoctonia foliar blight (RFB) (Rhizoctonia solani AG-1 IA and IB) and interference from common cocklebur, hemp sesbania, or johnsongrass. Soybean maturity was delayed both years by hemp sesbania whether or not RFB was present. Soybean yield was reduced 20% in plots inoculated with the RFB pathogen in 1993, but not in 1994. Soybean yield was reduced only when inoculated plots were infested with common cocklebur and johnsongrass in 1993 and with hemp sesbania and johnsongrass in 1994. Acifluorfen, glufosinate, glyphosate, paraquat, and pendimethalin were evaluated for effects on mycelial growth and sclerotia/microsclerotia production by …

In this dissertation, I examine the role of involvement in an ethnic community in the academic achievement of Vietnamese American teenagers. I first describe the social context of these young people by discussing the situation of Vietnamese people in the United States and by offering a detailed description of a Vietnamese American community. Next, I examine how Vietnamese American students are performing in American schools and look at the characteristics of young people in the community in question. Finally, I employ data from a survey administered in the public schools of New Orleans where Vietnamese youth are concentrated in order …
Counting On You: The Rhetoric Of The National Council Of Teachers Of Mathematics "Standards"., Michael R. Dreher
Counting On You: The Rhetoric Of The National Council Of Teachers Of Mathematics "Standards"., Michael R. Dreher
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study sought to initiate the process of identifying the rhetoric of mathematics as a distinct field of research, while acknowledging its basis in the rhetoric of science and other literatures. Accordingly, the study started by examining the external basis of the rhetoric of mathematics; in other words, how discourse affects the way in which the culture views mathematics. The primary text for this study was the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics' three-volume Standards for School Mathematics. This document, designed to reform mathematics education from kindergarten through twelfth grade, was shown not to be completely successful in its goal …
Adolescent Dissociation: The Development And Initial Validation Of The Adolescent Dissociation Scale., Colleen Mary Fitzmaurice
Adolescent Dissociation: The Development And Initial Validation Of The Adolescent Dissociation Scale., Colleen Mary Fitzmaurice
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The present study attempted to develop and initially validate a self-report screening measure for adolescent dissociative experiences. The Adolescent Dissociation Scale (ADS) is a 49-item, empirically derived, self-report scale designed as a research, screening measure to examine the degree of dissociative experiences in the general population as compared to clinical subjects. Results obtained suggest the ADS is a reliable, highly internally consistent measure. Initial content, construct and discriminate validity were explored. The ADS was found to discriminate between high and low dissociative adolescents. The ADS also was positively correlated with other measures of dissociation.
Arsenic Characterization In Soil And Arsenic Effects On Canola Growth., Michael Scott Cox
Arsenic Characterization In Soil And Arsenic Effects On Canola Growth., Michael Scott Cox
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Reactions of soil arsenic with arsenic addition and the effects of soil arsenic on canola were studied because of a lack of information on this subject. The reactions of different pools of soil arsenic to arsenic addition were studied. The effects of soil arsenic and arsenic form and concentration in solution on canola growth and nutrient uptake were also investigated and an attempt to model arsenic uptake with a mechanistic computer model was made. In a solution study, rate of inorganic arsenic did not appear to effect arsenic accumulation in roots and shoots of canola. However, shoot and root arsenic …

Functional Anatomy Of The Integument And Subcutaneous Structures Of The Head, Neck And Thorax Of The Domestic Turkey, Meleagris Gallopavo., Kumudini Nishantha De Silva
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The microdissection of the integument and subcutaneous structures of the head, neck, and thorax of the Domestic Turkey, Meleagris gallopavo, revealed a complex system with several distinct layers of connective tissue, smooth and striated musculature, and fat bodies (corpora adiposa). These layers show structural variations across the body surface, and the patterns of variation of the different layers correlate with one another. The smooth apterial muscles and the striated subcutaneous muscles complement each other in moving certain feather tracts. Fat tissue is deposited in the dermis as dermal fat, in the Fascia superficialis, and in distinct fat bodies associated with …
Voices In The Storm: Confederate Rhetoric, 1861-1865., Karen Elizabeth Fritz
Voices In The Storm: Confederate Rhetoric, 1861-1865., Karen Elizabeth Fritz
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
From 1861 to 1865, as white southerners waged their unsuccessful struggle for independence, they experienced shattering calamities. With the Civil War mostly fought on southern soil, Confederates witnessed the destruction of their environment, the deaths of their friends and family members, and the demise of their slave labor system. This study concerns the effects of this experience on the southern mindset. In short, this is an examination of discovery and transformation through ordeal. The Confederacy has been the subject of many a historical study. However, this interpretation approaches the subject from a slightly different perspective. Departing from the traditional reliance …
The Evolution Of The Romantic Ballet: The Libretti And Enchanter Characters Of Selected Romantic Ballets From The 1830s Through The 1890s., Tamara Lee Gebelt
The Evolution Of The Romantic Ballet: The Libretti And Enchanter Characters Of Selected Romantic Ballets From The 1830s Through The 1890s., Tamara Lee Gebelt
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
With the collapse of Neoclassicism and its worn-out mythological subject matter, the middle class increasingly attended performances previously dominated by aristocratic audiences. New artistic tastes developed; people sought a return to nature and all its mysteries. An interest in folklore, fairy tales, legends, and old literature accompanied a timeless human need for periodic escapism and fantasy. Ballet became a major vehicle for that need. When Marie Taglioni initiated dancing on pointe as the Sylphide in La Sylphide (1832), ballet gained favor, and the Romantic era was born in dance. Ballet flourished, and new scientific methods for training dancers included a …
The Study Of Oxidation Of Magnesium(0001)., Anura Upul Goonewardene
The Study Of Oxidation Of Magnesium(0001)., Anura Upul Goonewardene
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The oxidation of Mg(0001) was studied using ESDIAD (Electron Stimulated Desorption Ion Angular Distributions), LEED (Low Energy Electron Diffraction) and STM (Scanning Tunneling Microscopy). Disassociated oxygen and two species of oxygen were observed morphologically by STM and were identified as incorporated oxygen (mixed layer) and ionic oxide MgO(111). We observed that the step terraces and the dissociated oxygen are highly mobile and interact easily with the STM tip at room temperature. The true oxide was first observed on a double step pinning site as a protrusion elongated along the step edge. These sites pin the top terrace to the one …
