Stability Of Methane Oxidation Capacity To Variations In Methane And Nutrient Concentrations, Sylvia Schnell, Gary M. King Jan 1995

Stability Of Methane Oxidation Capacity To Variations In Methane And Nutrient Concentrations, Sylvia Schnell, Gary M. King

Faculty Publications

Uptake rate constants for atmospheric methane consumption by the 4-6 cm depth interval of a forest soil did not change during 4 months incubation in vitro, even though atmospheric methane concentrations were significantly higher than in situ concentrations. Uptake rate constants were also unaffected by continous incubation at a constant methane concentration of 17 ppm for 2 weeks and 170 ppm for 3 weeks. Uptake rates during incubation with 1000 ppm methane increased 176-fold when assayed with 1000 ppm methane and 5.5-fold when assayed with 1.7 ppm methane. These enhancements were lost after subsequent incubation with atmospheric methane. The ratio …

Electrogenic Na-Ca Exchange Clears Ca2+ Loads From Retinal Amacrine Cells In Culture, E. Gleason, S. Borges, M. Wilson Jan 1995

Electrogenic Na-Ca Exchange Clears Ca2+ Loads From Retinal Amacrine Cells In Culture, E. Gleason, S. Borges, M. Wilson

Faculty Publications

Calcium influx into cultured retinal amacrine cells is followed by a small, slow, inward current that we show here results from the operation of electrogenic Na-Ca exchange. The activity of the exchanger is shown to correlate with the magnitude of the Ca2+ load and to depend on both the Ca2+ and Na+ gradients. Li+ is unable to substitute for Na+ and in the absence of Na+, slow tail currents are almost entirely suppressed. A rapid change in [K+](o) does not affect the activity of the exchanger, suggesting that only Na+ and Ca2+ are transported. The ratio of charge entering as …

Gene Conversion As A Secondary Mechanism Of Short Interspersed Element (Sine) Evolution, David H. Kass, Mark A. Batzer, Prescott L. Deininger Jan 1995

Gene Conversion As A Secondary Mechanism Of Short Interspersed Element (Sine) Evolution, David H. Kass, Mark A. Batzer, Prescott L. Deininger

Faculty Publications

The Alu repetitive family of short interspersed elements (SINEs) in primates can be subdivided into distinct subfamilies by specific diagnostic nucleotide changes. The older subfamilies are generally very abundant, while the younger subfamilies have fewer copies. Some of the youngest Alu elements are absent in the orthologous loci of nonhuman primates, indicative of recent retroposition events, the primary mode of SINE evolution. PCR analysis of one young Alu subfamily (Sb2) member found in the low-density lipoprotein receptor gene apparently revealed the presence of this element in the green monkey, orangutan, gorilla, and chimpanzee genomes, as well as the human genome. …

Ammoniation Of Cellulosic Materials For Use In Fertilization And Oil Spill Remediation., Ananda Padmasiri De Silva Jan 1995

Ammoniation Of Cellulosic Materials For Use In Fertilization And Oil Spill Remediation., Ananda Padmasiri De Silva

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The stringent environmental regulations, rising cost, public concerns, and the limited availability of landfills for disposal of organic wastes have stimulated efforts to identify cost-effective, environmentally sound, alternative waste disposal technologies. The value of organic wastes as soil amendments is limited by their low nutrient value, occasional strong odors and high costs of transportation. The primary goal of this investigation was to develop a process to enrich the N content and to reduce the water content of organic wastes in order to enhance the value of these wastes for use in fertilization and oil spill remediation. A chemical process was …

Recurrences In Driven Quantum Systems, V. Poduri, D. A. Browne, U. Patil Jan 1995

Recurrences In Driven Quantum Systems, V. Poduri, D. A. Browne, U. Patil

Faculty Publications

We calculate the recombination probability for an atom interferometric experiment in which the beams interfere after one of them has been exposed to an intense laser. We choose a model one-dimensional atomic potential and find that if the intensity of the laser is large, there are recurrences in the recombination probability as a function of time, irrespective of the frequency of excitation. This implies that the particles exposed to the laser have a large amplitude to be in the localized initial state in spite of having sufficient energy to escape from the binding potential. © 1995 The American Physical Society.

Head-On Collision Of Two Black Holes: Comparison Of Different Approaches, Peter Anninos, Richard H. Price, Jorge Pullin, Edward Seidel, Wai Mo Suen Jan 1995

Head-On Collision Of Two Black Holes: Comparison Of Different Approaches, Peter Anninos, Richard H. Price, Jorge Pullin, Edward Seidel, Wai Mo Suen

Faculty Publications

A benchmark problem for numerical relativity has been the head-on collision of two black holes starting from the ''Misner initial data,'' a closed form momentarily stationary solution to the constraint equations with an adjustable closeness parameter μ0. We show here how an electric mixture of approximation methods can provide both an efficient means of determining the time development of the initial data and a good understanding of the physics of the problem. When the Misner data are chosen to correspond to holes initially very close together, a common horizon surrounds both holes and the geometry exterior to the horizon can …

Knot Polynomial States Of Quantum Gravity In Terms Of Loops And Extended Loops: Some Remarks, Cayetano Di Bartolo, Rodolfo Gambini, Jorge Griego, Jorge Pullin Jan 1995

Knot Polynomial States Of Quantum Gravity In Terms Of Loops And Extended Loops: Some Remarks, Cayetano Di Bartolo, Rodolfo Gambini, Jorge Griego, Jorge Pullin

Faculty Publications

In this paper we review the status of several solutions to all the constraints of quantum gravity that have been proposed in terms of loops and extended loops, based on knot polynomials. We discuss pitfalls of several of the results, and in particular the issues of covariance and regularization of the constraints in terms of extended loops. We also propose a formalism for "thickened out loops," which does not face the covariance problems of extended loops and may allow to regularize expressions in a consistent manner. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Diurnal Water Relations And Gas Exchange Of Two Slash Pine (Pinus Elliottii) Families Exposed To Chronic Ozone Levels And Acidic Rain, J. D. Johnson, D. P. Byres, T. J. Dean

Faculty Publications

Seedlings from two half‐sib families of Pinus elliottii var. elliottii Engelm. differing in sensitivity to ozone were grown in open‐top chambers for 22 months under simulated acidic rain (pH 3‐3) and four concentrations of ozone. The ozone concentrations were: charcoal‐filtered air (CF); non‐filtered ambient air (NF); twice the NF level (2X), thrice the NF level (3X). Ozone exposures were computer controlled to follow diurnal and seasonal fluctuations in ambient ozone concentrations. On two days, 24 April and 29 May, in the spring of 1990, trees were sampled repeatedly for xylem water potential, needle conductance and photosynthesis from sunrise to sunset …

Localization Of Endothelin-Like Immunoreactivity And Endothelin Binding Sites In Rabbit Eyes, Y. D. Zhao, L. X. Xu, J. W. Chandler Jan 1995

Localization Of Endothelin-Like Immunoreactivity And Endothelin Binding Sites In Rabbit Eyes, Y. D. Zhao, L. X. Xu, J. W. Chandler

Faculty Publications

Immunohistochemistry and in vitro autoradiographic techniques were used to investigate the localization of endothelin (ET)-like immunoreactivity and [125I]ET-1 binding sites in sections of ocular tissues of normal rabbits. ET-like immunoreactivity was localized to the corneal endothelium and the pre-epithelial layer of the cornea, which was specifically inhibited by addition of exogenous ET-1. Immunoreactivity for ET was also observed in the retinal ganglion layer and periocular fat tissues. These, however, were not inhibited in the presence of ET-1. Autoradiography showed binding sites for ET-1 in the iris and ciliary body. Emulsion-dipped slidesof sections of rabbit eyes incubated with [125I]ET-1 showed specific …

Submergence Impacts On Selected Wetland/Bottomland Tree Species., Jian Sun Jan 1995

Submergence Impacts On Selected Wetland/Bottomland Tree Species., Jian Sun

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Flooding is a common natural stress occurring in wetland/bottomland forests. Submergence, total immersion, is a special case of flooding, which has received limited attention in the literature. This study provides information on the impacts of three submergence treatments on three bottomland tree species. The results indicated that submergence would inhibit shoot and root growth for the three tested species during the submergence period. However, the survival of these species under submergence conditions were different. Taxodium distichum (L.) Rich survived even after 30 days of water coverage and survival continued to be high during the recovery period. Quercus nuttallii Palmer was …

Reducing Burden And Distress In Caregivers Of Dementia Patients., Christopher David Sletten Jan 1995

Reducing Burden And Distress In Caregivers Of Dementia Patients., Christopher David Sletten

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

As the prevalence and diagnosis of dementia have become more clearly delineated, there has been an increasing focus on the consequences of dementia on the family members that care for these individuals. Much of the attention has focused on who provides care and what impact that caregiving has on them. It has been well documented that the patient's family is responsible for much of the caregiving. These caregivers often experience both a physical and psychological impact from their role. Because of these negative consequences, several studies have investigated interventions designed to reduce caregiver distress. Most of these studies have incorporated …

Modules Associated To Disconnected Surfaces By Quantization Functors., Basinyi Chimitza Jan 1995

Modules Associated To Disconnected Surfaces By Quantization Functors., Basinyi Chimitza

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Blanchet, Habegger, Masbaum and Vogel defined a quantization functor on a category whose objects are oriented closed surfaces together with a collection of colored banded points and $p\sb1$-structure. The functor assigns a module $V\sb{p}(\Sigma)$ to each surface $\Sigma$. This assignment satisfies certain axioms. For p even, it satisfies the tensor product axiom, which gives the modules associated to a disconnected surface as the tensor-product of the modules associated to its components. In this dissertation we show that the p odd case satisfies a generalized tensor product formula. The notion of a generalized tensor product formula is due to Blanchet, and …

Comment Redessiner Le Monde: Art Et Anthropologie Dans L'Oeuvre D'Antonin Artaud., Irene Poutier Jan 1995

Comment Redessiner Le Monde: Art Et Anthropologie Dans L'Oeuvre D'Antonin Artaud., Irene Poutier

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In my dissertation entitled Comment redessiner le monde: Art et anthropologie dans l'oeuvre d'Antonin Artaud, I examine Artaud' s critical writings on painting, music and theatre which are central to his reflection. My research focuses on key concepts in Artaud's writings such as "culture," "primitivite" and "mythe." Notwithstanding the complexity and controversial aspects of these notions in the post-modern era, Artaud uses them as pivot points in the articulation of a totally new philosophy of life, which places art at the heart of social activity. My first point underlines Artaud's belief that western civilization alienates the artist from the pervading …

Fatal Attractions: A Sociological Study Of The Sex Ratios Of Intimate Homicide., Deann K. Gauthier Jan 1995

Fatal Attractions: A Sociological Study Of The Sex Ratios Of Intimate Homicide., Deann K. Gauthier

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study examines the question of why sex ratios of intimate killing vary across relationship type, race, and ultimately--place. The research investigates the influences of rates of family disruption and the direct and indirect affects of gender inequality in communities on various relationship and race specific sex ratios of intimate killing (SROK's). The results of OLS regression analyses reveal that the indirect effects (through family disruption) of gender inequality on relationship-specific SROK's are negligible, but the independent direct effects are considerable. Contrary to much of the criminological literature, higher female-to-male employment in a community does not lead to higher rates …

Selenium Speciation In Natural Waters: Separation Technique, Kinetic And Case Studies., William Charles Glover Jan 1995

Selenium Speciation In Natural Waters: Separation Technique, Kinetic And Case Studies., William Charles Glover

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Several methods of separating the dissolved 4+ and 6+ oxidation states of selenium were investigated. The use of Dowex 1 anion exchange resin in packed columns was not satisfactory as quantitative separation was not obtained. The determination of selenite after formation of a fluorescent complex with 2,4-diaminonaphthalene was quantitative but the procedure was too involved for routine work. Separation was achieved by co-precipitating the selenite from solution with ferric hydroxide precipitate formed between pH 5 and 6. The co-precipitation technique is effective from 4 to 50 degrees centigrade and is unaffected by salinity although phosphates interfere at high concentrations. The …

Increased Salinity And Water Depth As Constraints On Growth Of Freshwater Marsh Plants., Rebecca J. Howard Jan 1995

Increased Salinity And Water Depth As Constraints On Growth Of Freshwater Marsh Plants., Rebecca J. Howard

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Three experiments were conducted to evaluate the response of freshwater-oligohaline marsh macrophytes to increased water depth and salinity. In the first experiment, marsh sods containing Sagittaria lancifolia were manipulated in the field to decrease elevation (i.e., increase water depth) by 7.5 and 15 cm. Marsh sods at 15 cm below the marsh surface had the lowest redox potential and highest interstitial water sulfide concentration. Plants in the 15-cm water depth treatment had higher mean and maximum leaf heights than disturbed control plants, but aboveground biomass was not affected. In the second study, the effects of salinity pulses on plant growth …

Mechanisms Of Resistance To Aflatoxin Accumulation By Aspergillus Flavus In Maize Genotype Gt-Mas:Gk., Baozhu Guo Jan 1995

Mechanisms Of Resistance To Aflatoxin Accumulation By Aspergillus Flavus In Maize Genotype Gt-Mas:Gk., Baozhu Guo

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Maize genotype differences in aflatoxin production were observed when kernels of resistant GT-MAS:gk and thirteen susceptible commercial hybrids were inoculated with Aspergillus flavus using a laboratory kernel screening assay. GT-MAS:gk supported the lowest levels of aflatoxin in both intact and endosperm-wounded kernels. Treating intact kernels with KOH effected substantial increases in aflatoxin accumulation in GT-MAS:gk, but only marginal increases in Pioneer 3154. Removing wax from the surface of GT-MAS:gk kernels greatly increased aflatoxin accumulation. These results indicated that GT-MAS:gk resistance was associated with an intact pericarp (wax and cutin layers), acting as a physical barrier, along with internal biochemical factors. …

Pollen Influence On Developmental Physiology Of Southern Highbush Blueberry (Vaccinium Corymbosum) Fruit., Yue He Huang Jan 1995

Pollen Influence On Developmental Physiology Of Southern Highbush Blueberry (Vaccinium Corymbosum) Fruit., Yue He Huang

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

To study the physiological and biochemical effects of pollen sources on fruit growth and development of southern highbush blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum hybrids), five-year old 'Sharpblue' plants were grown in a greenhouse for self- and cross-pollination experiments. Cross-pollination with 'Gulfcoast' and 'O'Neal' as pollen sources increased fruit weight by 58.2% and 54.9%, respectively, compared to self-pollination. Coincidentally, cross-pollination doubled the number of mature ovules, and increased their size by 14%. Ovule abortion occurred between 5 and 10 days after pollination (DAP) in both pollination treatments. More abortion occurred in self-pollination (35%), compared with cross-pollination (22% for 'Sharpblue' $\times$ 'O'Neal' and 29% …

Differential Item Functioning In Performance Assessments: A Comparison Of Three Procedures., Hae-Seong Park Jan 1995

Differential Item Functioning In Performance Assessments: A Comparison Of Three Procedures., Hae-Seong Park

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

As performance assessments grow in popularity, it becomes increasingly important to investigate the effect of such assessments on various population subgroups. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relative empirical power of three popular statistical procedures (an extension of the generalized Mantel-Haenszel procedure, Logistic Discriminant Function Analysis, and a combined t-test procedure) in identifying polytomously scored items that function differentially for two subgroups of examinees. In the Monte Carlo study computer simulations were conducted to study the behavior of these procedures for identifying items exhibiting varying degrees of differential-item functioning (DIF). Each statistic was converted to a probability …

Remediation Of Contaminated Soils Using A Plant Based Surfactant., Raghava Rao Kommalapati Jan 1995

Remediation Of Contaminated Soils Using A Plant Based Surfactant., Raghava Rao Kommalapati

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A plant based surfactant extracted from fruit pericarps of Sapindus mukurossi (Ritha) is employed for the first time to investigate remediation of contaminated soils. A method for preparing natural surfactant solutions was developed and the solutions were characterized followed by generation and characterization of colloidal gas aphron (CGA) suspensions produced with these solutions. The variation of hexachlorobenzene (HCB) solubility with natural surfactant solutions was estimated and desorption of HCB from soils was investigated with batch and on-dimensional column experiments. Bioenhancement of soil microorganisms in natural surfactant solutions was studied under both aerobic and anaerobic conditions. The empirical formula for natural …
