We investigate spectral evolution in 37 bright, long gamma-ray bursts observed with the BATSE spectroscopy detectors. High-resolution spectra are characterized by the energy of the peak of νFν, and the evolution of this quantity is examined relative to the emission intensity. In most cases it is found that this peak energy either rises with or slightly precedes major intensity increases and softens for the remainder of the pulse. Interpulse emission is generally harder early in the burst. For bursts with multiple intensity pulses, later spikes tend to be softer than earlier ones, indicating that the energy of the peak of …

Inclusive jet differential cross sections for the reaction ep → jet + X at Q2 below 4 GeV2 have been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 0.55 pb-1. These cross sections are given in the kinematic region 0.2 < y < 0.85, for jet pseudorapidities in the ep-laboratory range -1 < ηjet < 2 and refer to jets at the hadron level with a cone radius of one unit in the η - θ plane. These results correspond to quasi-real photoproduction at centre-of-mass energies in the range 130-270 GeV and, approximately, for jet pseudorapidities in the interval -3 < ηjet(λp CMS) < 0. These measurements cover a new kinematic regime of the partonic structure of the photon, at typical scales up to ∼300 GeV2 and photon fractional momenta down to xγ ∼ 10-2. Leading logarithm parton shower Monte Carlo calculations, which include both resolved and direct processes and use the predictions of currently available parametrisations of the photon parton distributions, describe in general the shape and magnitude of the measured ηjet and Etjet distributions. © 1995.

Social Skills In Mentally Retarded Children With Symptoms Of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder., Debra Anne Benavidez
Social Skills In Mentally Retarded Children With Symptoms Of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder., Debra Anne Benavidez
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
One hundred forty-five boys ages 6 to 11 were administered the Social Skills Rating System and the Matson Evaluation of Social Skills with Youngsters. Subjects were divided into the following groups based on IQ, adaptive behavior, and score on a checklist of ADHD symptoms: normal IQ comparison, normal IQ high-activity-level, normal IQ medicated, mentally retarded comparison, mentally retarded high-activity-level, and mentally retarded medicated. For both normal IQ and mentally retarded children, high-activity-level resulted in higher levels of negative social behavior. Both groups of high-activity level subjects also scored lower on classroom-related social behaviors. Medicated normal IQ subjects displayed social behavior …
Legitimite Dans L'Oeuvre Biographique Et Autobiographique De Marguerite Yourcenar., Muriel Helene Placet
Legitimite Dans L'Oeuvre Biographique Et Autobiographique De Marguerite Yourcenar., Muriel Helene Placet
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation proposes a close reading of the biographical and autobiographical works of Marguerite Yourcenar: Le Labyrinthe du Monde and Memoires d'Hadrien. The purpose of this reading is to explore the process through which Yourcenar attempts to establish the legitimacy of the individual (be it her own self or one of her characters). Since Yourcenar rejects the "cult of the self", the elaboration of her identity is never explicitly at work in the text. In Le Labyrinthe du Monde, the author-narrator explores her "unicity" by reconstructing her genealogy with the result that she never becomes the narrated "object" of the …
Self-Reported Factors That Influence Eighth Graders' Performance On Standardized Mathematics Tests: An Empirical Analysis., Joseph Appolinaire Meyinsse
Self-Reported Factors That Influence Eighth Graders' Performance On Standardized Mathematics Tests: An Empirical Analysis., Joseph Appolinaire Meyinsse
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study examined some of the factors that influence African-American and Caucasian eighth graders' performance on standardized mathematics tests. Specifically, I examined the effects of high and low achievers' beliefs and attitudes toward mathematics and perceptions of self, mathematics, teacher, school, and parents on their performance levels. I employed a two-phase design with qualitative and quantitative approaches. The qualitative phase focused on one grand-tour question: Considering the times you took standardized mathematics tests, would you please describe some of the things that affected your performance on those tests? Individual students and focus groups were the units of analysis. I interviewed …
Equity Sensitivity: Scale Development And Validation., Kerry Shaun Sauley
Equity Sensitivity: Scale Development And Validation., Kerry Shaun Sauley
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The Equity Sensitivity Instrument (Huseman, Hatfield, and Miles, 1985) has been the primary measure used in equity sensitivity research to date. It appears to suffer from content deficiency and an inappropriate scoring procedure. Because of these problems, this dissertation constructed a new measure, based on systematic item development procedures, that provided thorough coverage of the equity sensitivity construct. Development of the new measure was based on Huseman, Hatfield, & Miles' (1987) theory of equity sensitivity. Items for the new measure were developed using the traditional approach of developing items that directly inquire about a person's equity sensitivity and a second …
Another America, Another Literature: Narratives From Louisiana's Colonial Experience., Germain Joseph Bienvenu
Another America, Another Literature: Narratives From Louisiana's Colonial Experience., Germain Joseph Bienvenu
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation attempts to establish a literary canon for the first French period of Louisiana's colonial history (1681-1763). The study examines works by writers who heretofore have not been analyzed as colonists of long residence in the New World but as Continentals who happened to spend some time in the Americas and then wrote about their experiences. The present analysis argues that many of these authors, by virtue of the significant time they spent in Louisiana, their devotion to and interest in the promotion of the colony, and their common concerns, should be examined principally not as European literati but …
Limited Warfare As A Pragmatic Concern: The Bounds Of Domestic Consensus, The Controlled Use Of Force, And United States Security., Robert Keith Jones
Limited Warfare As A Pragmatic Concern: The Bounds Of Domestic Consensus, The Controlled Use Of Force, And United States Security., Robert Keith Jones
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Over forty years since the Korean War, Americans continue to face limited war as a fundamental challenge to their security. In order to help the public to deal more effectively with the problem, this study seeks a pragmatic understanding of limited war (i.e., one in which it is possible to judge in retrospect the cumulative practical results of previous limited wars). In achieving that goal, two other objectives are sought: first, to model and critically evaluate two types of knowledge used by policymakers to wage limited wars; and, second, to detail the development of such knowledge from its historical origins …

The purpose of this study was to describe extension agricultural agents' perceptions of sustainable agriculture in the Southern Region of the United States. The population included Cooperative Extension county/parish agents with major responsibility in agriculture working in the 13 states of the Southern Region of the United States. These individuals were either employed by the thirteen institutions established by the Morrill Act of 1862 (the 1862 Cooperative Extension Services) or by eleven institutions established by the Second Morrill Act of 1890 (the 1890 Cooperative Extension Services). The study investigated agents' perceptions of sustainable agriculture concepts, and agents' perceptions of factors …
The Effect Of Life Stage Experience And Social Cognitive Reasoning On Adult Gender Role Orientation: A Multidimensional Approach., Lynda Suhrer-Roussel
The Effect Of Life Stage Experience And Social Cognitive Reasoning On Adult Gender Role Orientation: A Multidimensional Approach., Lynda Suhrer-Roussel
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study adds to the literature on adult gender role by extending adult gender role orientation beyond increases and/or decreases on gender related personality attributes, in particular increases in self-rated Masculine and Feminine ratings. Gender role orientation was examined along three dimensions: gender-related personality attributes of self, attitudes toward gender role issues, and gender-related attributes of others in social contexts. Life stage experience and social cognitive functioning influences on gender role orientation were examined. The participants were 240 individuals from five life stages: Life stage 1--single, never married; Life stage 2--married individuals with no children; Life stage 3--individuals with children …

Looking Like What You Are: Race, Sexual Style And The Construction Of Identity., Lisa Walker
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This project explores the function of body politics in constructing minority identities, or how people's physical and stylistic attributes are invested with meanings about who they are. It is interested in how race and sexual differences are defined in the confluence of discourses around visibility and invisibility. The first two chapters set up the parameters of in/visibility with regard to sexual and racial differences in readings of two paradigmatic texts about visibility, Radclyffe Hall's The Well of Loneliness, which produces the lesbian as visible in the figure of the butch, and Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man, which explores the paradoxical notion …

The Regulation Of Carbonic Anhydrase And Ribulose-1,5-Bisphosphate Carboxylase/Oxygenase Activase By Light And Co2 In Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii, Mamta Rawat, James V. Moroney
Faculty Publications
We have investigated the regulation of accumulation of ribulose1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase activase and the periplasmic carbonic anhydrase (CA) in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii. In algae, the periplasmic CA is required for efficient CO2 fixation when the CO2 concentration is low. These two proteins are affected differently by the CO2 level in the environment. The steady-state level of the ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase activase transcript was only slightly and transiently affected by a reduction in ambient CO2 concentration, whereas the CA transcript level was strongly induced by air containing ambient (350 parts per million) CO2 (low CO2) conditions. The transcripts for both proteins showed strong oscillations …

Aerobic And Anaerobic Starvation Metabolism In Methanotrophic Bacteria, P. Roslev, G. M. King
Faculty Publications
The capacity for anaerobic metabolism of endogenous and selected exogenous substrates in carbon- and energy-starved methanotrophic bacteria was examined. The methanotrophic isolate strain WP 12 survived extended starvation under anoxic conditions while metabolizing 10-fold less endogenous substrate than did parallel cultures starved under oxic conditions. During aerobic starvation, the cell biomass decreased by 25% and protein and lipids were the preferred endogenous substrates. Aerobic protein degradation (24% of total protein) took place almost exclusively during the initial 24 h of starvation. Metabolized carbon was recovered mainly as CO2 during aerobic starvation. In contrast, cell biomass decreased by only 2.4% during …

A search for ν̄e's in excess of the number expected from conventional sources has been made using the Liquid Scintillator Neutrino Detector, located 30 m behind the Los Alamos Meson Physics Facility beam stop. The ν̄e are detected via ν̄e p→e+ n with e+ energy between 36 and 60 MeV, followed by a γ ray from np→dγ (2.2 MeV). Using strict cuts to identify γ rays correlated with e+ yields 9 events with only 2.1±0.3 background expected. A likelihood fit to the entire e+ sample results in a total excess of 16.4-8.9+9.7±3.3 events. If attributed to ν̄μ→ν̄e oscillations, this corresponds …

The response of a spherical resonant-mass gravitational wave antenna can be written in terms of symmetric trace-free tensors. We apply this formalism to determine the direction of an incoming monochromatic wave, the orientation of its polarization ellipse and the wave's two independent amplitudes, using the response amplitudes at five different points on the sphere surface. This formalism also allows us to determine the directions of burst sources.

We study the quantum chaotic dynamics of an initially well-localized wave packet in a cosine potential perturbed by an external time-dependent force. For our choice of initial condition and with Latin small letter h with stroke small but finite, we find that the wvae packet behaves classically (meaning that the quantum behavior is indistinguishable from that of the analogous classical system) as long as the motion is confined to the interior of the remnant separatrix of the cosine potential. Once the classical motion becomes unbounded, however, we find that quantum interference effects dominate. This interference leads to a long-lived accumulation …

Native rat adipocytes and the mouse adipocyte cell line, 3T3-L1, possess transport vesicles of apparently uniform composition and size which translocate the tissue-specific glucose transporter isoform, GLUT4, from an intracellular pool to the cell surface in an insulin-sensitive fashion. Caveolin, the presumed structural protein of caveolae, has also been proposed to function in vesicular transport. Thus, we studied the expression and subcellular distribution of caveolin in adipocytes. We found that rat fat cells express the highest level of caveolin protein of any tissue studied, and caveolin is also expressed at high levels in cardiac muscle, another tissue possessing insulin responsive …
