Development And Validation Of A Multidimensional Measure Of Eating Behavior And Exercise., Cheryl Funsch Smith Jan 1997

Development And Validation Of A Multidimensional Measure Of Eating Behavior And Exercise., Cheryl Funsch Smith

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The specific aim of the current investigation was to develop and validate a multidimensional self-report inventory of a wide range of eating behaviors and weight control practices including overeating, emotional eating, and exercise to be used with overweight and obese populations for evaluation and treatment purposes. Based on recent research findings concerning dieting strategies, factors evaluating healthy versus unhealthy weight control practices were expected to emerge from factor analysis of the original item pool of 131 items. However, these specific factors were not found. Instead, the factor analytic study found the Multidimensional Measure of Eating Behavior and Exercise (MMEBE) to …

The Uptake And Distribution Of Diethyltoluenediamine In The Male Sprague Dawley Rat., Michael Charles Babin Jan 1997

The Uptake And Distribution Of Diethyltoluenediamine In The Male Sprague Dawley Rat., Michael Charles Babin

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Diethyltoluenediamine (CAS 68479-98-1) is a ring-ethylated analog of toluenediamine (TDA) and like TDA, consists of the 2,4- and 2,6-diamine isomers. DETDA was developed by Albermarle Corporation as a substitute for TDA in some applications. To determine the uptake and distribution of 2,4- and 2,6-DETDA, 5 groups of 4 adult male Sprague Dawley rats were gavaged at 179 $\mu$mol/kg body weight with ($\sp3$H) -2,4- or ($\sp3$H) -2,6-DETDA. Multiple tissues were collected at 1, 4, 8, 24 and 48 hours. Very high levels of label occurred in the gastrointestinal system and bladder during the first 8 hours while liver and kidney exhibited …

Wood Fiber Reinforced Polypropylene Composites., Minqiu Lu Jan 1997

Wood Fiber Reinforced Polypropylene Composites., Minqiu Lu

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Mechanical properties of polypropylene (PP)/wood fiber composites depend not only on the properties of each primary component but also on a complex interaction of several factors such as fiber loading and size, characteristics of fiber-polymer matrix interface, and the processing conditions. Both sequential and simultaneous composites are formulated in this research. First, sequential composites are made by compounding wood fibers with PP in the presence of maleated polypropylene (MPP) as a coupling agent in a twin-screw extruder. A small amount of MPP (1 wt%) present in these sequential composites can increase the tensile strength of the composites significantly. The tensile …

Weak Convergence Of Interacting Stochastic Systems., George William Paslaski Jan 1997

Weak Convergence Of Interacting Stochastic Systems., George William Paslaski

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The aim of the dissertation is to establish the weak convergence of mean-field interacting particle systems driven by Poisson random measures and semimartingales. The limit of the stochastic systems is identified by the use of martingale problems and Picard iteration schemes. The interacting systems driven by Poisson random measures are shown to be stable with respect to the coefficients of the system as well as the driving terms. The same results can be achieved when a random interaction term independent of the driving terms is introduced into the coefficients of the system. Equations driven by semimartingales do not neccesarily possess …

The Role Of Anxiety In Neuropsychological Dysfunction In Early Hiv Disease., Joseph Gerald Prejean Jr Jan 1997

The Role Of Anxiety In Neuropsychological Dysfunction In Early Hiv Disease., Joseph Gerald Prejean Jr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The literature on neuropsychological functioning in patients with asymptomatic HIV disease is widely discrepant with prominent researchers on either side of the debate about whether or not early HIV infection is associated with neuropsychological deficits. Many theories have been put forth to account for these varied results, including inadequate study design, lack of measures sensitive enough to detect differences, and pooling of test scores across individuals that do have deficits, but not necessarily in the same areas. The present investigation was designed to examine the role of anxiety as a possible confounding variable that could account for differences across HIV …

Nursing Fathers: American Colonists' Conception Of English Protestant Kingship., Benjamin Lewis Price Jan 1997

Nursing Fathers: American Colonists' Conception Of English Protestant Kingship., Benjamin Lewis Price

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation traces the development of the concept of English Protestant kingship within the political culture of colonial America from the Glorious Revolution of 1688 to the beginning of the American Revolution. It is meant to illustrate the place of British kings within the structure and ideology of American colonial politics and society during that period. It illustrates Americans' understanding of the protection-allegiance relationship between English Protestant kings, especially the first two Hanoverian monarchs, and their subjects in the provinces of North America. This study also explores the language of Whig political discourse with its two primary "dialects" of Court …

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The goal of the present research was to contribute to an understanding of the transfer of training process. This study used a conceptual model based on a comprehensive training evaluation model to examine the extent to which secondary influences on training effectiveness, motivational elements, environmental elements, ability/enabling elements, and learning from computer-based training were associated with and explained the variance in supervisory ratings of performance. Subjects were production operators in a Fortune 500 size petrochemical manufacturing firm. This study examined a revised conceptualization of transfer climate, one in which transfer climate variables were determined based on their referent or source …

Linear Matrix Inequality Approach To Robust Emergency Lateral Control Of A Highway Vehicle With Time-Varying Uncertainties., Robert Edward Benton Jr Jan 1997

Linear Matrix Inequality Approach To Robust Emergency Lateral Control Of A Highway Vehicle With Time-Varying Uncertainties., Robert Edward Benton Jr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

New linear-matrix-inequality (LMI) based methods are developed for the static-output-feedback stabilization and reduced-gain static-output-feedback stabilization of time-invariant systems. Unlike previous methods, the static-output-feedback method is non-iterative in LMI solutions. The methods are extended to design robust static-output-feedback controllers for time-varying systems using a polytopic-systems approach. Examples are given which demonstrate the use of each of the new methods. The specific problem of emergency lateral control of a highway vehicle is then addressed using the new robust static-output-feedback method. A controller is designed which robustly stabilizes the vehicle over the range of highway speeds (15 to 30 m/s) and a range …

Reductive Precipitation Of Uranium By Free And Immobilized Cells And Cell Fractions Of Facultative And Anaerobic Bacteria., Boyce Lamont Clark Jan 1997

Reductive Precipitation Of Uranium By Free And Immobilized Cells And Cell Fractions Of Facultative And Anaerobic Bacteria., Boyce Lamont Clark

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study examines the interaction between two genera of bacteria and the biochemical reduction of uranium. The bacteria studied are the obligate anaerobe, Desulfovibrio desulfuricans, and the facultative aerobe, Escherichia coli. Preliminary experiments established the pH, cell concentration, substrate concentration, and type of substrate that favored reduction of hexavalent uranium in aqueous solutions. Uranium reduction is most complete at pH 7 and 9, with cell concentrations of at least 33.5 mg/ml (dry cell weight). Whole cells of D. desulfuricans were found to reduce uranium in the presence of lactate and hydrogen whereas in E. coli, reduction was achieved only in …

Land/Water Interface Delineation Using Neural Networks., Rajabhushanam Cherukuri Jan 1997

Land/Water Interface Delineation Using Neural Networks., Rajabhushanam Cherukuri

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The rapid decline in acreage of land areas in wetlands caused by frequent inundations and flooding has brought about an increased awareness and emphasis on the identification and inventory of land and water areas. This dissertation evaluates three classification methods--Normalized Difference Vegetation Index technique, Artificial Neural Networks, and Maximum-Likelihood classifier for the delineation of land/water interface conditions using Landsat-TM imagery. The effects of three scaling algorithms, including resampling by aggregation, Gaussian smoothing, and local variance analysis, on the classification accuracy are analyzed to determine how the delineation, quantification and analysis of land/water boundaries relate to problems of mixed pixels, scale …

Coupled Field Equations For Saturated Soils And Its Application To Piezocone Penetration And Shield Tunneling., Murad Yusuf Abu-Farsakh Jan 1997

Coupled Field Equations For Saturated Soils And Its Application To Piezocone Penetration And Shield Tunneling., Murad Yusuf Abu-Farsakh

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

An elasto-plastic coupled system of equations are formulated here in order to describe the time-dependent deformation of saturated cohesive soils. Formulation of these equations is based on the principle of virtual work and the theory of mixtures for inelastic porous media as proposed by Prevost (1980) and Kiousis and Voyiadjis (1988). The saturated soil is considered as a mixture consisting of two deformable media, the solid grains and the water. Each medium is regarded as a continuum and follows its own motion. The coupled equations are developed for large deformations with finite strains in an updated Lagrangian reference frame. The …

Development And Implementation Of The Body Logic Program For Adolescents: A Primary Prevention Program For Eating Disorders., Paula Jonniece Varnado Jan 1997

Development And Implementation Of The Body Logic Program For Adolescents: A Primary Prevention Program For Eating Disorders., Paula Jonniece Varnado

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Eating disorder symptoms such as feelings of fatness, restrictive eating and purgative behaviors are observed in many children and adolescents. These feelings and behaviors, may, in some adolescents lead to the development of anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. A recent series of studies has identified risk factors for the development of eating disorder behaviors in children and adolescents. These risk factors include overconcern with physical appearance, negative evaluation of physical appearance, social pressure for thinness, higher weight level, depression, and body dysphoria. It has been hypothesized that targeting adolescents who are at risk for developing an eating disorder may result …

Flight Muscle Histolysis In The Female House Cricket, Acheta Domesticus., Rush Hoyet Oliver Jan 1997

Flight Muscle Histolysis In The Female House Cricket, Acheta Domesticus., Rush Hoyet Oliver

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Flight muscle histolysis was investigated in the dorsal longitudinal muscles (DLMs) of the cricket. Histolysis in the DLMs was characterized by analysis of total protein content, tissue wet weight, and relative percent muscle shortening. Initial declines of total protein indicated the JH signal initiating histolysis occurred by Day 2. Histolysis was essentially complete by Day 3. Ligation of Day 1 crickets prevented histolysis but this inhibition could be prevented by continual topical treatments with methoprene. Ligation of Day 2 crickets did not prevent histolysis. A requirement for active protein expression was demonstrated by analysis of synthesis block by cycloheximide and …

The Rainbow Portrait And The Faery Queen: Emblem, Imagination And The Arthurian Gentleman., Robert Gibson Robinson Iii Jan 1997

The Rainbow Portrait And The Faery Queen: Emblem, Imagination And The Arthurian Gentleman., Robert Gibson Robinson Iii

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This work re-interprets the symbolism of the emblematic "Rainbow" portrait (c. 1600) of Elizabeth I. The traditional title comes from the identification of the rainbow in the portrait as that of Genesis 9:13. In fact, this work demonstrates, it is the philosophers' rainbow, a cryptonym for the colors--black, red, white--of the three stages of alchemic transmutation: purification, illumination, perfection. Elizabeth is represented as the Faery Queen, the alchemical monarch--historically the pre-Homeric Hecate--who transmutes not only the brazen world of her subjects but their brassy selves as well. In the text the portrait is therefore designated the "Alchemists' Rainbow" portrait, the …

Waterborne Materials Exchange Between Marshes And Open Water Of The Barataria Bay Estuary Of Louisiana, United States Of America., Ronald John Rovansek Jan 1997

Waterborne Materials Exchange Between Marshes And Open Water Of The Barataria Bay Estuary Of Louisiana, United States Of America., Ronald John Rovansek

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The exchange of carbon, sediment, and water between brackish marshes and a shallow, fine-grained bay of the Barataria Bay Estuary were examined in order to quantify the production, transport, and storage of carbon in the Barataria Basin. Factors controlling these exchanges were identified and measured. Flux of suspended sediments through a tidal bayou connecting marshes and open waters were measured throughout the year and during a variety of weather events. Discharge of porewater from the marsh substrate to surrounding waters via subsurface flows and surficial drainage channels were measured. Constituent concentrations in the marsh runoff were monitored and used to …

Self-Mutilation In A Community Sample Of Adolescents., Elizabeth Eden Lloyd Jan 1997

Self-Mutilation In A Community Sample Of Adolescents., Elizabeth Eden Lloyd

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study was to examine the provisional prevalence rates and characteristics of self-mutilative behavior in a community sample of adolescents. A total of 368 adolescents between the ages of 12 and 19 participated in this investigation. Thirty-nine percent of high school students sampled (n = 143) engaged in self-mutilation within the past year. Commonly endorsed behaviors were biting self, hitting self on purpose, and cutting/carving skin. Self-mutilators were likely to engage in these behaviors to reduce internal tension, as well as to gain attention. Self-mutilators were compared with non-mutilating adolescents (n = 225) on self-report measures of …

The Sugar Masters: Slavery, Economic Development, And Modernization On Louisiana Sugar Plantations, 1820-1860., Richard J. Follett Jan 1997

The Sugar Masters: Slavery, Economic Development, And Modernization On Louisiana Sugar Plantations, 1820-1860., Richard J. Follett

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In this dissertation, I contend that sugar planters in the antebellum South managed their estates progressively, efficiently, and with a capitalist political economy and ideology. By embracing slavery, technology, and a host of improvements, sugar planters strove to create integrated units producing, manufacturing, and marketing sugar on an agro-industrial scale. Despite a century of historiographical debate, historians remain divided over the incompatibility of slavery with industrial and agricultural innovation. Whether they look to Adam Smith or Karl Marx, most historians deem free labor a necessity for technology and growth. This, however, appears inaccurate, as antebellum sugar planters confidently advocated improvement …

The Role Of Binge Eating Disorder In The Estimation Of Food Intake Of Obese Individuals., Drew Arthur Anderson Jan 1997

The Role Of Binge Eating Disorder In The Estimation Of Food Intake Of Obese Individuals., Drew Arthur Anderson

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Individuals with binge eating disorder (BED) share some characteristics with persons with bulimia nervosa (BN) and some characteristics of obese persons who do not have problems with binge eating. Previous studies have found that while nonbinging individuals underestimate caloric intake, patients with BN overestimate caloric intake when intake is large. The present study hypothesized that because persons with BED binge eat, they would also overestimate caloric intake. A total of 56 women (9 with BED, 23 obese nonbingers, and 24 normal weight nonbingers) estimated several portion sizes of ice cream and then ate a test meal of ice cream and …

Chemical Vapor Deposition Of Copper Films., Narendra Shamkant Borgharkar Jan 1997

Chemical Vapor Deposition Of Copper Films., Narendra Shamkant Borgharkar

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

We have studied the kinetics of copper chemical vapor deposition (CVD) for interconnect metallization using hydrogen (H$\sb2$) reduction of the Cu(hfac)$\sb2$ (copper(II) hexafluoroacetylacetonate) precursor. Steady-state deposition rates were measured using a hot-wall microbalance reactor. For base case conditions of 2 Torr Cu(hfac)$\sb2$, 40 Torr H$\sb2$, and 300$\sp\circ$C, a growth rate of 0.5 mg cm$\sp{-2}$ hr$\sp{-1}$ (ca. 10 nm min$\sp{-1}$) is observed. Reaction order experiments suggest that the deposition rate passes through a maximum at partial pressure of 2 Torr of Cu(hfac)$\sb2$. The deposition rate has an overall half-order dependence on H$\sb2$ partial pressure. A Langmuir-Hinshelwood rate expression is used to …

Technical Training Program Evaluation: Present Practices In United States' Business And Industry., Skip Twitchell Jan 1997

Technical Training Program Evaluation: Present Practices In United States' Business And Industry., Skip Twitchell

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

There is a lack of information on training evaluation. For those studies addressing the amount of evaluation that occurs and in which samples can be identified, the samples are non-random. There have been very few reports on the methods used for evaluation or the reasons why there is so little evaluation. This study used a random sample selected from members of the ASTD professional practice area titled, Technical and Skills Trainers. It can be argued that this is an informed sample involved in a training area that produces objective outcomes and should produce a favorable picture of training evaluation. Questions …

Linguistics And Poetry: Phonological Performance Analysis As Key To Interpretation In Donne's Lyrics., Sara Witsell Anderson Jan 1997

Linguistics And Poetry: Phonological Performance Analysis As Key To Interpretation In Donne's Lyrics., Sara Witsell Anderson

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study blends linguistic science and literary criticism by using phonological theory and methodology to uncover interpretive clues in the form of structurally-based guidance to the manner of performance of certain lines of selected poems. Its underlying assumption is that with regard to interpretation, the oral dimension of metrical lyric poetry is at least as important as the written dimension, since such commonly accepted features as meter, rhyme, and alliteration depend on oral performance of the poetry involved, at least in the form of the reader's sounding it imaginarily to the mind's ear. It follows that intonationally precise renditions of …

The data was obtained through six focus group interviews. Standard methodology for qualitative data was used in the analysis. Four focus group interviews involved cotton advisory committee members, and two involved Extension agents. Nineteen Louisiana parishes were targeted in the study. Study conclusions included the following: (a) advisory committees strongly influence decision …

Examination Of Behavior Problems In Hiv-Infected Toddlers: The Role Of Maternal Factors., Jennifer L. Hoover Jan 1997

Examination Of Behavior Problems In Hiv-Infected Toddlers: The Role Of Maternal Factors., Jennifer L. Hoover

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The present study investigated the frequency and intensity of behavior problems exhibited by Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)-infected toddlers ages 16 to 40 months by comparing them to HIV-exposed toddlers, toddlers at risk for development delays, and healthy toddlers. The role of maternal factors, such as depression, insularity, and stress, in behavior ratings also was considered. Mothers completed a set of questionnaires and the toddlers' developmental status was assessed by a member of the research team. It was hypothesized that HIV-infected children would demonstrate a higher frequency and intensity of behavior problems than children in the three equivalent control groups. With …

The Development Of Behavioral And Emotional Self-Regulation During The Preschool Period., Maria D. Kalpidou Jan 1997

The Development Of Behavioral And Emotional Self-Regulation During The Preschool Period., Maria D. Kalpidou

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The study investigates age-related changes in behavioral and emotional self-regulation during the preschool period and the relationship between them. Behavioral self-regulation was measured by compliance without external monitors. Emotional self-regulation was measured by the expressed control of emotions and coping strategies. Eighty-eight preschoolers (45 5-year-olds; 43 3-year-olds) participated in a compliance-delay task. They were left alone for 10 min (self-regulated compliance) to sort cutlery in the presence of toys. The demand for emotional self-regulation was manipulated by hiding (low demand) or exposing (high demand) the toys. Children experienced both sessions. All procedures were video-taped. The expressed emotional comfort during the …

The Terminology Of Composition Studies: A Historical Approach., Kimberly Lynn Harrison Jan 1997

The Terminology Of Composition Studies: A Historical Approach., Kimberly Lynn Harrison

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Recently, composition scholars have shown interest in examining their own language. My study furthers this interest by providing a historical analysis of the terminology commonly used in composition studies. The historical focus allows an analysis of how our vocabulary has changed in relation to specific schools of thought in composition studies, thus encouraging an awareness of the influence of context--professional, institutional, cultural, and personal--on the scholarship in composition studies. Such influences, I argue, are often ignored to the detriment of our discipline. Chapter one further explains the scope and purpose of my study. Chapters two and three analyze in-depth two …

Prodigal Daughters And Pilgrims In Petticoats: Grace Greenwood And The Tradition Of American Women's Travel Writing., Paula Kathryn Garrett Jan 1997

Prodigal Daughters And Pilgrims In Petticoats: Grace Greenwood And The Tradition Of American Women's Travel Writing., Paula Kathryn Garrett

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Recovering a forgotten woman writer from the nineteenth century, Prodigal Daughters and Pilgrims in Petticoats: Grace Greenwood and the Tradition of American Women's Travel Writing focuses on the public letters of Grace Greenwood (Sara Jane Clarke Lippincott). In the 1870s, Greenwood successfully communicated feminist ideas as the first woman employed by the New York Times and one of the first women to enter Congressional press galleries. In her letters, often on the front-page of the paper, Greenwood addresses the major woman's rights issues of the time: equal pay, coverture laws, male violence, gender restrictions, educational opportunities, and woman's suffrage. This …

The Composition Of Politics: Creativity In The Political Thought Of Simone Weil And Albert Camus., John Randolph Leblanc Jan 1997

The Composition Of Politics: Creativity In The Political Thought Of Simone Weil And Albert Camus., John Randolph Leblanc

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This essay traces the critical development of the idea of creativity through the intellectual relationship of Simone Weil and Albert Camus. Members of the French Resistance during the Second World War, Camus and Weil never met. Camus became enamored of her work after her death and is largely responsible for its publication. Camus recognized in Weil a markedly distinct, but kindred, spirit. Despite the apparent conflict between her Christian mysticism and his existential orientation, they both sought the preservation of the specifically human in a world which, in valuing a mechanistic form of reason, tended to objectify the human. Their …

Feedback Linearizing Control Strategies For Chemical Engineering Applications., Michael James Kurtz Jan 1997

Feedback Linearizing Control Strategies For Chemical Engineering Applications., Michael James Kurtz

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Two widely studied control techniques which compensate for process nonlinearities are feedback linearization (FBL) and nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC). Feedback linearization has a low computational requirement but provides no means to explicitly handle constraints which are important in the chemical process industry. Nonlinear model predictive control provides explicit constraint compensation but only at the expense of high computational requirements. Both techniques suffer from the need for full-state feedback and may have high sensitivities to disturbances. The main work of this dissertation is to eliminate some of the disadvantages associated with FBL techniques. The computation time associated with solving a …

Toward Prescriptive Alternatives To Secondary School Suspensions: Risk Analysis Using An Epidemiologic Approach., Cynthia P. Morgan-D'Atrio Jan 1997

Toward Prescriptive Alternatives To Secondary School Suspensions: Risk Analysis Using An Epidemiologic Approach., Cynthia P. Morgan-D'Atrio

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Data were collected from a large urban high school in order to investigate the characteristics of students who get suspended. Descriptive, epidemiologic analyses, and multivariate statistical analyses were used to investigate which, if any of several screening variables were most likely to predict secondary school suspensions for 9th grade students. Because multivariate statistics may be tedious for many to interpret, epidemiologic analyses were used in order to more easily disseminate study findings to readers and those within the school setting. For males, statistics were calculated for three groups of students: (1) males having more than one 9th grade suspension, (2) …
