Magnetosusceptibility Event And Cyclostratigraphy (Msec) Of The Eifelian-Givetian Gssp And Associated Boundary Sequences In North Africa And Europe, Rex E. Crick, Brooks B. Ellwood, Ahmed E. El Hassani, Raimund Feist, Jindrich Hladil

Faculty Publications

MagnetosusceptibiUty event and cyclostratigraphy (MSEC) is used to define magnetic susceptibility (MS) signatures for the Eifelian-Givetian GSSP in southern Morocco and four other Eifelian-Givetian boundary sequences in Morocco, southern France, and the Czech Republic. MSEC data from the GSSP are used to iden-tify nine first-order isochronous MSEC events for chronocorrelation. MSEC data clearly define a new abiotic Late Eife-lian MSEC Event that immediately precedes the Eife-lian-Givetian boundary and encompasses the biotic Kacak and otomari Events. The MSEC event begins in the upper Tortodus kockelianus kockelianus Zone and ends in the upper Polygnathus ensensis Zone. This Event occurs in the same …

Optimization Of Out-Of-Core Computations Using Chain Vectors, M. Kandemir, J. Ramanujam, A. Choudhary Jan 1997

Optimization Of Out-Of-Core Computations Using Chain Vectors, M. Kandemir, J. Ramanujam, A. Choudhary

Faculty Publications

Over the last decade, processor speed has become significantly higher than memory and disk speeds. Therefore, exploiting the memory hierarchy has emerged as a key problem in parallel computing. An out-of-core computation is one which operates on disk-resident data. This paper uses the concept of chain vectors for tiling out-of-core codes. The theory of chain vectors is discussed and extended, and their relation to reuse vectors is established. Then, chain vectors are used to optimize the tile size, shape, allocation and scheduling for out-of-core codes.

Mass/Heat Transfer In A Ribbed Blade Coolant Passage With Cylindrical Vortex Generators: The Effect Of Generator-Rib Spacing, Richard G. Hibbs, Sumanta Acharyal, Yi Chen, Dimitris E. Nikitopoulos

Faculty Publications

The effect of vortex-generators on the heat transfer from the internally ribbed passages of a turbine blade coolant channel is studied experimentally using a mass-transfer technique. Cylindrical vortexgenerators placed directly above the ribs have been used in this study. Results are reported on the effect of the spacing between the vortex-generator and the ribs. Detailed distributions of the Sherwood number contours and the centerline Sherwood number distributions are presented. Three generator-ribspacing/ rib-height (s/e) values of 0.55, 1, and 1.5 are considered. It is shown that at small generator-rib spacings (s/e=0.55), the two act as a single element, and lead to …

Characterization Of Thin-Bedded Turbidites From The Permian Tanqua Karoo Submarine Fan Deposits, South Africa., Debnath Basu Jan 1997

Characterization Of Thin-Bedded Turbidites From The Permian Tanqua Karoo Submarine Fan Deposits, South Africa., Debnath Basu

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Thin-bedded turbidites (TBTs, 5-60 cm) constitute a common facies in fine-grained deep-water clastic environments. Proper characterization of these deposits are lacking due to the scarcity of well preserved outcrops exposing TBTs and the difficulty in resolving them by conventional subsurface logging methods. The objective of this study is to characterize TBTs developed in a variety of laterally contiguous depositional environments in a submarine fan. These deposits are well exposed in the Permian Tanqua Karoo subbasin, South Africa. The subenvironments studied include upper mid-fan channel levee-overbank, mid-fan passive channel fill, lower mid-fan channel-sheet transition, and lower-fan distal sheet deposits. Field and …

Boris Yeltsin's Ascent To Power: Personae And The Rhetoric Of Revolution., Matthew Thomas Althouse Jan 1997

Boris Yeltsin's Ascent To Power: Personae And The Rhetoric Of Revolution., Matthew Thomas Althouse

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study is an examination of the rhetorical strategies utilized by Boris Yeltsin during his rise to prominence and his role in the second Russian revolution. By borrowing concepts from the study of revolutions in science, the author contends that Yeltsin used three distinct rhetorical personae, or modes of public presentation, to forward his discourse between 1985 and 1991. These personae include the revolutionary, the conciliatory, and the conservative. With this critical vocabulary, the author argues that Yeltsin's successes and failures hinged on his fitting use of rhetorical personae in relation to four exigencies during the late-Soviet era: the evolution …

Sugar Cane Fiber Geotextiles., Julia L. Thames

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The study of sugar cane fiber geotextiles represents a holistic approach to interdisciplinary research that includes product development, product testing, industry and target market identification, and strategic and financial planning for manufacturing and distribution. Based upon satisfactory results of prior research, a field test of soil erosion control in a natural environment was designed to determine performance of the sugar cane product and commercially available natural fiber geotextiles of wood, straw, and coconut fiber. Field test results indicated that the sugar cane mats allowed grass from planted seed to germinate and the mats maintained integrity during heavy rains. Due to …

Genetics And Functions Of Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 (Hsv-1) Glycoprotein K (Gk) In Virus Envelopment And Egress., Sukhanya Jayachandra Jan 1997

Genetics And Functions Of Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 (Hsv-1) Glycoprotein K (Gk) In Virus Envelopment And Egress., Sukhanya Jayachandra

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

HSV-1(KOS)$\Delta$gK, a virus lacking the UL53 gene coding for glycoprotein K(gK) was constructed, characterized and compared to the partially deleted gK-null virus HSV-1(F)-gK$\beta$. $\Delta$gK and F-gK$\beta$ viruses produced microscopic plaques on Vero cells at 48 hours post infection. F-gK$\beta$ plaques at 72 hours post infection contained fused cells (syn), while $\Delta$gK plaques resembled wild-type KOS plaques ($syn\sp+$). $\Delta$gK replicated efficiently in exponentially dividing Vero cells whereas F-gK$\beta$ yields were 10 and 1000-fold lower than $\Delta$gK yields in HEp-2 or log-phase Vero cells, respectively. Electron micrographs of $\Delta$gK-infected Vero cells revealed large numbers of capsids in the nuclei of Vero, but …

Atmospheric Neutrino Detection Using A Large Water Cerenkov Detector., Russell Clark Jan 1997

Atmospheric Neutrino Detection Using A Large Water Cerenkov Detector., Russell Clark

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A 2.1 kton-yr exposure of data from the Irvine-Michigan-Brookhaven detector has yielded 72 atmospheric neutrino events with a vertex contained inside the fiducial volume and at least 0.95 GeV of visible Cerenkov energy. The ratio of muon-like events with respect to the total number of events was calculated for the data and the Monte Carlo simulation. The ratio of these two ratios $({muon-like\over total})\sb{Data}/ ({muon-like\over total})\sb{MC}$ was found to be $1.1\sbsp{-0.12}{+0.07}(stat.)\pm\ 0.11(syst.).$ The zenith angle dependence of this ratio of ratios is consistent with being flat. The region of $sin\sp2(2\theta) > 0.5$ and $\delta m\sp2\ > 9.8 \times 10\sp{-3} eV\sp2$ has been …

Acute Effects Of Passive Muscle Stretching On The Stretch-Shortening Phenomenon., Andrew Cornwell Jan 1997

Acute Effects Of Passive Muscle Stretching On The Stretch-Shortening Phenomenon., Andrew Cornwell

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Two experiments examined the acute effects of passive muscle stretching on the performance of a skill (vertical jump) which takes advantage of the stretch-shortening phenomenon. Because recent work suggests that passive stretching might impede the mechanisms (elastic and myoelectrical potentiation) thought to be responsible for this phenomenon, it was hypothesized that stretching would decrease the jump height of jumps executed with a preparatory countermovement (CMJ), but not the jump height of those initiated from a static, squatting position (SJ). In the first experiment, subjects performed CMJ and SJ jumps under two different conditions: after passively stretching the knee and hip …

Synthesis Of Novel Cyclopentadienyl And Pyrrole Compounds., Alfonso Davila Jan 1997

Synthesis Of Novel Cyclopentadienyl And Pyrrole Compounds., Alfonso Davila

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation describes the preparation of two classes of compounds: cyclopentadienes and pyrroles. These compounds are key elements in the synthesis of conducting materials. A general novel methodology for the cyclopentadienylannulation of strained cycloalkynes has been developed. Bromination of 1,5-cycloctadiene produces 1,2,5,6-tetrabromocyclooctane, which under further treatment with DBU eliminates two moles of HBr to produce a mixture of 2 diastereomeric bisvinylbromides. These isomers eliminate one mol of HBr when treated with t-BuOK under phase transfer conditions producing a cyclooctene-yne. This bromoalkyne reacts in situ with dimethylfulvene in a sealed tube at 100$\sp\circ$C to produce a Diels-Alder adduct. Treatment of this …

Christian Heroism And Holy War In Anglo-Saxon England., Kent Gregory Hare Jan 1997

Christian Heroism And Holy War In Anglo-Saxon England., Kent Gregory Hare

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation examines the character and development of a Christian heroic ideal in Anglo-Saxon England between the seventh and eleventh centuries and its manifestation through notions of holy war. It provides a valuable case study of the ongoing synthesis which occurred when the Germanic peoples converted to Christianity. The mutual transformation wrought in the traditional Germanic warrior ethos and Christian faith and values permeates the literary sources for Anglo-Saxon history, from the early hagiographies and Bede's Ecclesiastical History, through later histories and chronicles, to the unique corpus of Old English poetry. As early as the first generation of Anglo-Saxon Christianization, …

Cloning, Sequencing And Regulation Of The Rhodobacter Capsulatus Hemh Gene., Ekaterina Vladislavova Kanazireva Jan 1997

Cloning, Sequencing And Regulation Of The Rhodobacter Capsulatus Hemh Gene., Ekaterina Vladislavova Kanazireva

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Rhodobacter capsulatus, a purple non-sulfur photosynthetic bacterium, synthesizes four tetrapyrrole end products: heme, bacteriochlorophyll, siroheme and vitamin B$\sb{12}$ via the common tetrapyrrole biosynthetic pathway. The biosynthesis of tetrapyrroles in R. capsulatus is a complex and precisely controlled process which has been under extensive investigation. In order to study the regulation of tetrapyrrole biosynthesis, the R. capsulatus hemH gene was cloned by complementation of an E. coli $\Delta hemH$ mutant and sequenced. The enzyme ferrochelatase, encoded by the hemH gene, catalyzes the insertion of ferrous iron into protoporphyrin IX, thus producing heme. The consensus ferrochelatase signature sequence was found in the …

The Influence Of Violence Upon Academic Achievement Among African American First Time College Students., Diana F. Kelly Jan 1997

The Influence Of Violence Upon Academic Achievement Among African American First Time College Students., Diana F. Kelly

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study examined the relationship between early exposure to violence--both personal and community--and the later academic achievement of African American first time college students. The study incorporated several variables that were thought to impinge upon the academic achievement process. Specifically, those variables were divided into several groups: background factors (socioeconomic status, high school academic record, personal and community violence exposure), student characteristics (locus of control, educational aspirations and expectations), and university characteristics (campus safety, academic and social integration). Student achievement was measured by students' expected grade point average, as indicated on a student questionnaire. University administrators, professors, and researchers who …

Performance And Analysis Of Segmented Multiple Bus Systems., Jungjoon Kim Jan 1997

Performance And Analysis Of Segmented Multiple Bus Systems., Jungjoon Kim

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The dissertation introduces a new class of bus-based systems called the Segmented Multiple Bus System (SMBS). One of the unique characteristics of the SMBS is that it allows the exploitation of memory reference locality even though it is a bus-based nondirect network. This comes from the architectural interconnection feature that the SMBS can be viewed as a large-scale multiple bus system (MBS) that has been partitioned into smaller partitions called segments. Each such segment is in effect a small conventional MBS whose size is chosen so as to avoid bus loading problems. The SMBS overcomes the architectural limitations of bus-based …

Gravity-Assisted Tertiary Gas Injection Process In Water-Drive Oil Reservoirs., Bogdan Lepski Jan 1997

Gravity-Assisted Tertiary Gas Injection Process In Water-Drive Oil Reservoirs., Bogdan Lepski

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In dipping, water-drive reservoirs, substantial incremental oil can be produced using gravity-assisted gas injection improved recovery processes. These processes include the Double Displacement Process (DDP) and the Second-Contact Water Displacement (SCWD). The efficiency of these processes depends, in part, on phase distribution in the pore space after gas injection which in turn depends on interfacial and surface tensions (IFT) of the phases involved. The research described here-in pertains to experimental work performed to investigate various aspects of the DDP and the SCWD in both homogenous and heterogeneous rock types with dead oil/nitrogen and recombined-oil/methane fluid systems. Additional work was performed …

Analysis And Interpretation: Musical Analysis As A Technique For Performance Decisions In Selected Preludes By Claude Debussy., William Timothy O'Steen Jan 1997

Analysis And Interpretation: Musical Analysis As A Technique For Performance Decisions In Selected Preludes By Claude Debussy., William Timothy O'Steen

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Thorough analysis will serve the performer as a valuable tool for making effective performance decisions. This study follows two guidelines: (1) analysis must include the examination of all elements of musical structure and (2) the performer must view the music from as many perspectives as possible, for example, as listener and analyst, as well as performer. In serving the second of these two guidelines, the study examines performance tradition as it pertains to Debussy's piano music, including historical performances of his contemporaries as well as Debussy's own recorded performances. A larger part of the study analyzes the structure of "Des …

Academic Discipline, Mentoring, And The Career Commitment Of Women Faculty., Gloria Tara Nye

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Women continue to be underrepresented as faculty at U.S. universities, especially in the physical sciences and engineering. The belief that only women can adequately serve as role models and mentors for other women may be a roadblock to progress for women in disciplines where they are underrepresented. This study of women faculty investigates how female career commitment is influenced by academic discipline and mentoring. The survey responses of sixty-six tenure-track women faculty were used to obtain data for both science or engineering and non-science or engineering academic disciplines at three public Ph.D. granting research universities. The women faculty in science …

Structure-Activity Relationships Of Nitroarenes: Mutagenicity, Oxygen Consumption, Toxicity, And Xenobiotic Radical Production., Caroline Ann Metosh-Dickey Jan 1997

Structure-Activity Relationships Of Nitroarenes: Mutagenicity, Oxygen Consumption, Toxicity, And Xenobiotic Radical Production., Caroline Ann Metosh-Dickey

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The nitroreduction of 4NQO and five structural analogs were studied with respect to radical production and mutagenicity. In the umu assay, 4NQO was the most mutagenic analog. Addition of microsomal and cytosolic protein from induced and uninduced rat liver samples decreased 4NQO mutagenicity in the standard strain (Salmonella typhimurium TA 1535/psk1002) 4NQO mutagenicity was also found to be decreased in the nitroreductase-deficient strain (Salmonella typhimurium TA1535NR/psk1002). In several strains of the Protox$\rm\sp{TM}$ assay 4NQO yielded the highest induction rate as compared to other compounds tested. In the presence of ascorbate 4NQO cytotoxicity, but not mutagenicity, was substantially enhanced. Oxygen consumption …
