Lie Theory Of Differentiable Transformations On Banach-Type Manifolds., Amadou Belly Guisse
Lie Theory Of Differentiable Transformations On Banach-Type Manifolds., Amadou Belly Guisse
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Let M be a manifold modeled on a Banach space B, and let U be an open subset of M containing the domain of some chart $\varphi$. The aim of this work is to set mathematical foundations (topological, algebraic geometrical) for the theory of pseudosemigroups of local transformations S on M and their infinitesimal generators $L\sp{r}(S,\ U).$ In the first part of this dissertation we define the topology of local uniform convergence, the most suitable in this case, similar to the compact open topology in the finite dimensional case, and show what relationship it has with different topologies. In the …
The Counsel Group: Rhetorical And Political Contexts Of Court Counsel In "The Canterbury Tales"., Marc S. Guidry
The Counsel Group: Rhetorical And Political Contexts Of Court Counsel In "The Canterbury Tales"., Marc S. Guidry
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The Counsel Group: Rhetorical and Political Contexts of Court Counsel in The Canterbury Tales argues that counsel-taking is one of the most important themes in Chaucer's masterwork. Court counsel--which includes giving the ruler or lord political advice, making laws and treaties, and passing judicial sentence--was a major form of medieval discourse that recurs throughout Ricardian poetry. Indeed, the modern principle of consultative government has its roots in the medieval discourse of counsel and consent. As a diplomat in the service of Richard II, member of parliament, and acquaintance of several leading members of the king's council, Chaucer was well positioned …
A Methodological Examination Of Naturally Occurring School Improvement In Louisiana Schools., John Albert Freeman
A Methodological Examination Of Naturally Occurring School Improvement In Louisiana Schools., John Albert Freeman
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The study was conducted as an exploratory investigation of naturally occurring school improvement, which refers to improvement in a school's effectiveness status that is achieved without external change forces. The research design for the study used mixed methodologies divided into three phases to identify and examine schools that improved longitudinally in a "natural" environment. Phase I utilized regression (ordinary least squares) methods to create a database containing all elementary schools in Louisiana, categorized by their level of change. As a result, some 20% of the schools in Louisiana were identified as having improved over a three-year period. This approximated an …
Development Of An Analysis System For Discontinuities In Rigid Airfield Pavements., Michael Ivan Hammons
Development Of An Analysis System For Discontinuities In Rigid Airfield Pavements., Michael Ivan Hammons
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The response of the rigid pavement slab-joint-base structural system is complex, and accurately predicting the response of such a system requires a significant degree of analytical sophistication. The research reported in this dissertation has defined some essential features required to adequately model the system and has demonstrated a technique to develop a comprehensive three-dimensional (3D) finite element model of the rigid pavement slab-joint-foundation structural system. Analysis of experimental data from the 1950s confirms that explicit modeling of dowels is not required to model the structural response of the system. Additional experimental data gathered as a part of this research indicates …
The Link Between Economic Restructuring, Economic Deprivation, And Serious Crime In American Cities, 1970-1990., Graham Christopher Ousey
The Link Between Economic Restructuring, Economic Deprivation, And Serious Crime In American Cities, 1970-1990., Graham Christopher Ousey
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation postulates that the economic transition from manufacturing to service employment is a major factor leading to high rates of economic deprivation and crime in major U.S. cities. By integrating theory and research from several substantive areas of sociology, I extend macro-level research in criminology and develop a social organization/social control explanation of city crime rates. I use both cross-sectional and longitudinal regression methods to investigate the direct and indirect effects of a city's industrial structure on race-disaggregated rates of homicide, robbery, and burglary. Based upon data from 113 major cities in the United States, I compute a series …
Pure Framed Braids And 3-Manifolds., Jonathan Natov
Pure Framed Braids And 3-Manifolds., Jonathan Natov
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation looks at representations of framed pure braids and compact orientable three manifolds. A representation, $\Phi:Z\sp{n}\oplus P\sb{n}\to \Gamma\sb{n},$ is constructed from the framed pure braid group on n strands to the mapping class group on a surface of genus n. The representation is used to obtain a presentation of the fundamental group. The representation, like that of (M-P), is compatible with Heegaard and Surgery descriptions. An algorithm is presented for transforming mapping class group elements to a stably equivalent pure framed braid, under the correspondence given by the representation. A geometric description, using the representation, is given for multiplication …
An Adiabatic Bond Charge Model For The Phonon Properties Of Ii-Vi Materials And Superlattices., Bhagwan Das Rajput
An Adiabatic Bond Charge Model For The Phonon Properties Of Ii-Vi Materials And Superlattices., Bhagwan Das Rajput
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
I present an extension of the adiabatic Bond Charge model to study lattice dynamics of highly polar II-VI semi-conductors and semi-metals and CdTe-HgTe superlattices grown along (001) and (111) directions. This is the first attempt to study phonons in CdTe-HgTe superlattices. My results for phonon dispersion, specific heat and elastic constants for the six bulk materials are in good agreement with experimental observations. The best parameter sets for the six compounds show trends that are consistent with the parameters for group IV elemental semi-conductors and III-V compounds. For CdTe-HgTe superlattices, I find that the long range Coulomb interaction between particles …
Everyday Problem-Solving Goals: Contributions Of Age And Individual Differences., Lisa Eileen Norris
Everyday Problem-Solving Goals: Contributions Of Age And Individual Differences., Lisa Eileen Norris
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of the present research was to examine the contribution of age and individual differences to everyday problem solving, focusing on goal preference. Three pilot studies were conducted to generate interpersonal problem solving goals that were high in emotional arousal and low in emotional arousal. In the Experiment Proper, 40 young and 40 older adults were given 6 vignettes depicting everyday problems. Subjects rated their preference of both high and low experimenter-provided goals. Subjects then completed 4 individual difference questionnaires that measured stimulation intensity, affect intensity, and emotional control. Results showed that both younger and older adults endorsed more …
Fit And Organizational Turnaround: An Examination Of The Performance Implications Of Strategy Content And Process Fit And Strategy And Cause Of Decline Fit., Christopher L. Shook
Fit And Organizational Turnaround: An Examination Of The Performance Implications Of Strategy Content And Process Fit And Strategy And Cause Of Decline Fit., Christopher L. Shook
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Generally, extant turnaround research has been inductively based and has limited its conceptualization of strategy to strategy content. This study builds on past research by incorporating strategy process and theoretically deriving the causes of decline. In general terms, this study posits that fit (consistency) between strategy process and content is critical to an organization's ability to recover from poor performance. Specifically, the following are considered consistent responses: (1) an entrepreneurial strategy with decentralized decision making and expanded information usage; and, (2) an efficiency strategy with centralized decision making and constricted information usage. Additionally, organizations need to fit their strategy to …
Created Works, Created Selves: Intersections Of Genre And Self-Fashioning In The New World., Leonard Joseph Vraniak Jr
Created Works, Created Selves: Intersections Of Genre And Self-Fashioning In The New World., Leonard Joseph Vraniak Jr
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
John Smith, Roger Williams, and Thomas Morton created images of themselves to attempt to gain position in the New World colonial undertaking, and each uses techniques of specific genres to bolter those images. However, each demonstrates a different degree of self-fashioning. John Smith collects and republishes texts much like Richard Hakluyt did back in England. However, Hakluyt's collections just reproduced texts, while Smith mixed others' writings about his colonial activities with his own work, creating a hybrid text with Smith as the subject. Smith's emphasis upon individual effort mirrors one level of humanistic achievement that Europeans of his era were …
Ambivalent Idylls: Hardy, Glasgow, Faulkner, And The Pastoral., Stephan Randall Toms
Ambivalent Idylls: Hardy, Glasgow, Faulkner, And The Pastoral., Stephan Randall Toms
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Thomas Hardy, Ellen Glasgow, and William Faulkner used the pastoral mode to show the contradictions, inconsistencies, and dangers in some forms of bucolic idyll. The ambivalence of their texts toward the rural world causes many critics to deny or overlook the presence of the pastoral mode in the work of these three novelists. A study of pastoral literature reveals that its characteristics have never been as fixed as many theorists would like to believe. Pastoral redefines, subverts, and reinvents itself as it interacts with different people, cultures, and languages. The theories of Mikhail Bakhtin help us to understand textual ambivalence …
An Empirical Analysis Of The Association Between The Intercompany Effects Of Electronic Data Interchange And The Level Of Computerization And Integration Of The Accounting Information System In Small Businesses., Maurice George Durler
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study investigates intercompany effects on the accounting information system (AIS) of small businesses when electronic data interchange (EDI) is implemented at the request of influential trading partners. The intercompany effects are examined by analyzing the association of the owner/manager's attitude toward computers, the owner/manager's perception that EDI was forced on the business, and the owner/manager's awareness of EDI benefits, with the level of AIS computerization and integration (AIS computerization). Two groups of hypotheses are proposed. The hypotheses in the first group assert that an association exists between the level of AIS computerization, the owner/manager's general computer attitude, and the …
The Role Of The Unit As A Cognitive Bridge Between Additive And Multiplicative Structures., Nancy Sutton Alexander
The Role Of The Unit As A Cognitive Bridge Between Additive And Multiplicative Structures., Nancy Sutton Alexander
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The rational number domain is known for the great difficulties it presents for students and teachers. As students construct knowledge of fractions, they search for connections to existing knowledge. Procedures from the whole number domain are tried, but many do not work on the new numbers! Recent research has focused on the unit as a way to link whole number and rational number understanding (Behr, Harel, Post & Lesh, 1992). Studies have suggested that students intuitively form units (Lamon, 1994), and that this intuitive knowledge can serve as a foundation for rational number understanding (Lamon, 1994; Mack, 1990). Golding (1994) …

Optimization And Scale-Up Of Thiarubrine A Production From Hairy Root Cultures Of Ambrosia Artemisiifolia., Santosh G. Bhagwath
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Thiarubrine A (TA), a plant secondary metabolite synthesized by members of the family Asteraceae possesses antifungal and antiviral properties and is a potential pharmaceutical. The objective of the work was the optimization and scale-up of a bioprocess for the production of TA using hairy root cultures of Ambrosia artemisiifolia. At the inception of the work an established hairy root culture of the model system was used as inoculum in reactor experiments for the development of a protocol for the quantification of TA and in subsequent shake flask experiments to determine optimum culture conditions. TA accumulation closely paralleled growth and then …
Predictors Of Nonadherence Among Hiv-Infected Outpatients: Psychosocial And Medical Care Factors Associated With Appointment Attendance., Sheryl L. Catz
Predictors Of Nonadherence Among Hiv-Infected Outpatients: Psychosocial And Medical Care Factors Associated With Appointment Attendance., Sheryl L. Catz
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Nonadherence to medical regimens is a critical behavioral threat to the health of HIV-infected individuals. Patients cannot benefit from increasingly efficacious treatments for HIV/AIDs unless they adhere to them. Consistent medical care plays a central role in prolonging life and enhancing quality of life for these individuals. It is therefore essential to understand why many patients do not return reliably for medical services. However, little research has focused on the development of empirically based models of HIV-related nonadherence. Thus, the primary purpose of the present study was to identify factors predictive of HIV-related nonadherence to medical appointments. Demographic, medical care, …
A Cuban Convent In The Age Of Enlightened Reform: The Observant Franciscan Community Of Santa Clara Of Havana, 1768-1808., John James Clune Jr
A Cuban Convent In The Age Of Enlightened Reform: The Observant Franciscan Community Of Santa Clara Of Havana, 1768-1808., John James Clune Jr
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The reform of Mexican convents in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century generally has been shown to have been ineffective. I suggest that reform at the Observant Franciscan community of Santa Clara of Havana achieved much better results. While conventual reform in Cuba did not attain perfection, it followed the pattern of administrative, economic and military reform in that it was more effective on the island than it was elsewhere in the Spanish empire. The success of conventual reform in Havana must be attributed to the diligence of the Spanish Crown. Whereas the reform of convents in Mexico became …
Among Women: Toni Morrison's Mothers, Sisters, And Daughters., Hazel Ruth Reames Caillouet
Among Women: Toni Morrison's Mothers, Sisters, And Daughters., Hazel Ruth Reames Caillouet
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This work explores the relationships between and among women in the fiction of Toni Morrison. Morrison's mothers, sisters, and daughters cannot function without the love and support of a community of women. Those characters who abandon or reject this community become lost to their own world. Morrison women, thus, find themselves in and through other women. The first two chapters establish Morrison's characters in relation to those of other authors in order to show her unique sense of community. Comparing Morrison's work to Virginia Woolf's A Room of One's Own and her emphasis on individuality and isolation illustrates Morrison's dependence …
An Integration Of Biographical Data And Personality Research Through Sherwood Forest Empiricism: Robbing From Personality To Give To Biodata., Bruce W. Davis
An Integration Of Biographical Data And Personality Research Through Sherwood Forest Empiricism: Robbing From Personality To Give To Biodata., Bruce W. Davis
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Archival data was used to assess the effectiveness of incorporating biodata scoring into extant personality measures. Personality and biodata theories were briefly reviewed and several commonalities were noted. Hypotheses were developed for Conscientiousness, Emotional Stability, Agreeableness, and Openness to Experience. The first three dimensions were expected to predict absenteeism and all four were expected to predict turnover, and empirical scoring was expected to increase predictive validity. Data were collected from three samples (school bus drivers, bus drivers, and law enforcement) and three different personality measures were scored using England's (1971) vertical percent method. Results showed that two of the three …
The Screen For Adolescent Violence Exposure (Save): Development And Validation., Teresa L. Hastings
The Screen For Adolescent Violence Exposure (Save): Development And Validation., Teresa L. Hastings
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Increased interest in how violence exposure might relate to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other adolescent psychopathology has created considerable demand for an assessment tool to assist in this research effort. Though attempts have been made to improve the measurement standards for violence research on youth, available instruments lack adequate psychometric qualities, comprehensiveness, or an acceptable format for slow readers. The present study provided empirical evidence on the utility of the Screen for Adolescent Violence Exposure (SAVE), an instrument designed to both correct the deficiencies of previous measures and to assess violence exposure for school, home, and neighborhood settings. The …
Representing Shakespeare's "Brave New World": Latin American Appropriations Of "The Tempest"., Ximena Gallardo
Representing Shakespeare's "Brave New World": Latin American Appropriations Of "The Tempest"., Ximena Gallardo
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Representing Shakespeare's "Brave New World" is a descriptive analysis of Latin American appropriations of William Shakespeare's The Tempest. The first part explores the written appropriations by Jose Enrique Rodo, Roberto Fernandez Retamar, Edward Kamau Brathwaite, Aime Cesaire and George Lamming. The second part analyzes four major dramatic appropriations of The Tempest: a 1989 production by the Chilean company El Conventillo, a 1994 adaptation by the Chilean company La Bordada, a 1991 version by the Venezuelan company Rajatabla and a 1992 production by the Mexican company Por Amor Al Arte. Representing Shakespeare's "Brave New World" also explores the connection between these …
Experimental Analysis Of Aggression., Bethany Ann Marcus
Experimental Analysis Of Aggression., Bethany Ann Marcus
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
In 1982, Iwata, Dorsey, Slifer, Bauman, and Richman developed a systematic assessment method to identify the operant functions of self-injurious behavior. In this study, the Iwata et al., method was used to assess the operant functions of aggression displayed by children and adolescents with developmental disabilities. Although researchers have demonstrated that aggression serves operant functions, there has been no comprehensive analysis of aggression using the Iwata et al. method. Twelve children and adolescents participated. The experimental conditions from the Iwata et al. method were replicated (i.e., attention, instructional demand, play, no interaction); also, a tangible positive reinforcement condition was included …
Penitent Brothellers: Grace, Sexuality, And Genre In Thomas Middleton's City Comedies., Herbert Jack Heller
Penitent Brothellers: Grace, Sexuality, And Genre In Thomas Middleton's City Comedies., Herbert Jack Heller
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation focuses on the repentance and conversion scenes in Thomas Middleton's city comedies. It asserts the importance of recognizing Middleton's Calvinism for reading the plays' religious elements. Chapter one critiques both the common omission of the religious language from criticism of the comedies and the emphasis on the tragedies and Puritan politics in recent studies. The pamphlet The Two Gates of Salvation is used to theorize Middleton's method of investigating Calvinist theology in the comedies. Chapter two examines the conversion of Penitent Brothel in A Mad World, My Masters, and the repentances of Francisco in The Widow and Sir …
Technology In The English Composition Classroom: Freshman Composition Students Using The Internet To Plan Assignments And Conduct Research., Michael Allen Mccord
Technology In The English Composition Classroom: Freshman Composition Students Using The Internet To Plan Assignments And Conduct Research., Michael Allen Mccord
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The use of computer and electronic communication and network technology is becoming increasingly important not only in society in general, but also in the college-level English composition classroom. These technologies amount to what some researchers term "multilayered literacies" or "new grammars." However, there have been few systematic studies of how students actually use these technologies. The current research presents a descriptive/naturalistic study of how students both learn and use the new electronic technologies as they accomplish research for, and respond to, a college-level writing assignment. This study examines the use of computers and networks by eight case study participants in …
Seasonal Changes In Gnrh Neurons And Effects Of Dietary Monoamine Precursors On The Hypothalamic-Gonadal Axis In House Sparrows (Passer Domesticus)., Christopher Andrew Meseke
Seasonal Changes In Gnrh Neurons And Effects Of Dietary Monoamine Precursors On The Hypothalamic-Gonadal Axis In House Sparrows (Passer Domesticus)., Christopher Andrew Meseke
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Mechanisms modulating avian seasonal reproduction involve a complex interaction between exogenous environmental information and internal physiologic systems, such as functional changes in the hypothalamic-gonadal axis and changes in the influence of monoaminergic neurotransmitters on hypothalamic neuroendocrine cells. This project was undertaken to describe seasonal changes of the testes and immunoreactive-(ir)-gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) neurons in House Sparrows in southeastern Louisiana, and to examine the role of monoaminergic neurotransmitters in modulating seasonal reproduction through the use of dietary monoamine precursors. Testicular weights rapidly increased from February to March, peaked from April to July, when the seminiferous tubules were spermatagenically active and filled …

An Integrated Gps-Gis Methodology For Performing Travel Time Studies., Cesar A. Quiroga
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation describes a methodology for conducting travel time studies based on global positioning system (GPS) receivers and geographic information system (GIS) technology. Compared to traditional approaches, the new methodology provides consistency, automation, finer levels of resolution, and better accuracy in measuring travel time and speed. These characteristics enable the detection of localized traffic effects much more efficiently than with traditional techniques. The new methodology automates the data collection and data reduction procedures, and provides improved procedures for documenting and analyzing travel time and speed data. As a result, large amounts of reliable travel time and speed data can be …
The Third Way: A Study Of Economic Justice In The Writings Of Karol Wojtyla (Pope John Paul Ii)., Woodard King Mott Jr
The Third Way: A Study Of Economic Justice In The Writings Of Karol Wojtyla (Pope John Paul Ii)., Woodard King Mott Jr
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Pope John Paul II, born Karol Wojtyla, has written extensively about the human person and how that person acts in the world. Beginning with Wojtyla's doctoral dissertation presented at the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas on the Catholic mystic St. John of the Cross and continuing through the most recent best seller, Crossing the Threshold of Hope, Christian personalism has pervaded Wojtyla's writings, encyclicals, and public utterances. Wojtyla's perspective on economic justice, as shaped by his Christian personalism, is the subject of this dissertation. A systematic investigation of Wojtyla's theory of economic justice reveals a third way of economic …

Spectroscopic Analyses Of Excited-State Phenomena In Organized Media: Proton Transfer And Photoisomerization And Measurement Of Modified Low Density Lipoproteins Using Rapid-Mixing Multidimensional Stopped-Flow Spectroscopic Methods., Eric Lamar Butler-Roberts
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The research presented in this dissertation generally involves aspects of molecular spectroscopy and contains two areas of focus. In the first section, the influences of organized media on the excited-state phenomena of intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) and photoisomerization have been investigated. Specifically, the photochemical properties of the novel ESIPT molecule 10-hydroxybenzo(h) quinoline (HBQ), as well as 2-(2$\sp\prime$-hydroxyphenyl)benzazoles (HBAs), have been examined in the presence of cyclodextrins (CDs) and micelles using absorbance, steady-state, and time-resolved emission spectroscopies. Additionally, the influence of cyclodextrins upon the photoisomerization of trans-stilbene (TS) has been studied. Results from spectroscopic studies of HBQ and HBAs in organized …
Developing And Field Testing Design Parameters For Customizing Agricultural Extension Education Systems In Developing Countries., Michael Brian Peter Sager
Developing And Field Testing Design Parameters For Customizing Agricultural Extension Education Systems In Developing Countries., Michael Brian Peter Sager
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Increasingly, developing countries view the partnership of research, education, and extension in traditional agricultural extension education systems as an adaptable model for improving their agrarian economies. The process of adaptation, however, has too often followed the traditional developmental project approach and been little more than the transplantation of a predefined extension education model into a developing country with little regard to existing country specific factors which impact the effectiveness of a domestic extension system. As a result, less than satisfactory technology transfer has occurred and slow rates of agricultural economic development have been posted, painting a disappointing record for agricultural …
