Collision Of Boosted Black Holes, John Baker, Andrew Abrahams, Peter Anninos, Steve Brandt, Richard Price, Jorge Pullin, Edward Seidel Jan 1997

Collision Of Boosted Black Holes, John Baker, Andrew Abrahams, Peter Anninos, Steve Brandt, Richard Price, Jorge Pullin, Edward Seidel

Faculty Publications

We study the radiation from a collision of black holes with equal and opposite linear momenta. Results are presented from a full numerical relativity treatment and are compared with the results from a “close-slow” approximation. The agreement is remarkable, and suggests several insights about the generation of gravitational radiation in black hole collisions. © 1997 The American Physical Society.

Lattice Knot Theory And Quantum Gravity In The Loop Representation, Hugo Fort, Rodolfo Gambini, Jorge Pullin Jan 1997

Lattice Knot Theory And Quantum Gravity In The Loop Representation, Hugo Fort, Rodolfo Gambini, Jorge Pullin

Faculty Publications

We present an implementation of the loop representation of quantum gravity on a square lattice. Instead of starting from a classical lattice theory, quantizing, and introducing loops, we proceed backwards, setting up constraints in the lattice loop representation and showing that they have appropriate (singular) continuum limits and algebras. The diffeomorphism constraint reproduces the classical algebra in the continuum and has as solutions lattice analogues of usual knot invariants. We discuss some of the invariants stemming from Chern-Simons theory in the lattice context, including the issue of framing. We also present a regularization of the Hamiltonian constraint. We show that …

Mass Transfer Cycles In Close Binaries With Evolved Companions, A. R. King, J. Frank, U. Kolb, H. Ritter Jan 1997

Mass Transfer Cycles In Close Binaries With Evolved Companions, A. R. King, J. Frank, U. Kolb, H. Ritter

Faculty Publications

We give a global analysis of mass transfer variations in low-mass X-ray binaries and cataclysmic variables whose evolution is driven by the nuclear expansion of the secondary star. We show that limit cycles caused by irradiation of the secondary by the accreting primary are possible in a large class of these binaries. In the high state, the companion transfers a large fraction of its envelope mass on a thermal timescale. In most cases this implies super-Eddington transfer rates and would thus probably lead to common-envelope evolution and the formation of an ultrashort-period binary. Observed systems with (sub)giant secondaries stabilize themselves …

Transients Among Binaries With Evolved Low-Mass Companions, A. R. King, J. Frank, U. Kolb, H. Ritter Jan 1997

Transients Among Binaries With Evolved Low-Mass Companions, A. R. King, J. Frank, U. Kolb, H. Ritter

Faculty Publications

We show that stable disk accretion should be very rare among low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) and cataclysmic variables whose evolution is driven by the nuclear expansion of the secondary star on the first giant branch. Stable accretion is confined to neutron star systems in which the secondary is still relatively massive and to some supersoft white dwarf accretors. All other systems, including all black hole systems, appear as soft X-ray transients or dwarf novae. All long-period neutron star systems become transient well before most of the envelope mass is transferred and remain transient until envelope exhaustion. This complicates attempts to …

Variability Of A Vestigial Structure: First Metacarpal In Colobus Guereza And Ateles Geoffroyi, Robert G. Tague Jan 1997

Variability Of A Vestigial Structure: First Metacarpal In Colobus Guereza And Ateles Geoffroyi, Robert G. Tague

Faculty Publications

A tenet of evolutionary theory is that, under conditions of stabilizing selection, phenotypic variability is inversely related to selection intensity. Correspondingly, a nonfunctional, vestigial structure is expected to be highly variable relative to its functional homologue. This study tests the hypothesis that species with a vestigial pollex, Colobus guereza and Ateles geoffroyi, have a first metacarpal whose length is both highly variable relative to, and poorly correlated with, the lengths of the other metapodials. The results are consistent with the hypothesis, though this combination of traits is also found in Presbytis rubicunda and Presbytis cristata. The latter two species have …

Effects Of Environmental Sodium Chloride On Percent Hatch, Yolk Utilization, And Survival Of Channel Catfish Fry, C. R. Weirich, T. R. Tiersch Jan 1997

Effects Of Environmental Sodium Chloride On Percent Hatch, Yolk Utilization, And Survival Of Channel Catfish Fry, C. R. Weirich, T. R. Tiersch

Faculty Publications

Only limited research has addressed the effect of salinity on hatching of channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus eggs, and no studies have evaluated the effect of salinity on fry development and survival. This study was undertaken to determine the effect of environmental sodium chloride (0, 1, 2, and 4 g/L NaCl) on percent hatch, yolk utilization, and survival of channel catfish fry. Experiments were conducted in recirculating systems using seven egg masses (1-2 d old). Each egg mass was divided into smaller portions which remained undissociated or were dissociated with sodium sulfite (NaSO3). Eggs were incubated until hatching. Wet and dry …

Roosting Behavior And Group Territoriality In American Crows, Donald F. Caccamise, Lisa M. Reed, Jerzy Romanowski, Philip C. Stouffer Jan 1997

Roosting Behavior And Group Territoriality In American Crows, Donald F. Caccamise, Lisa M. Reed, Jerzy Romanowski, Philip C. Stouffer

Faculty Publications

Cooperative groups of American Crows (Corvus brachyrhynchos) maintain group territories year-round while often traveling long distances to roost communally at night. Our goal was to discover how territorial crows resolve the conflict between the cohesive nature of group behavior with requirements of dispersal to roost communally. We color-marked crows to study group composition over two years, and radio-tagged crows to study movement among roosts, territories, and feeding areas. Most crows showed diurnal fidelity to the group territory throughout the year. Yet, most birds frequently left territories during the day to forage up to 4 km away. At night, crows roosted …

Changes In Carbohydrate And Nitrogen Relationships During Episodic Growth Of Ligustrum Japonicum Thunb, Jeff S. Kuehny, William B. Miller, Dennis R. Decoteau

Faculty Publications

Rooted cuttings of Ligustrum japonicum Thunb., an episodically growing species, were grown hydroponically in a controlled-environment growth chamber to determine allocation of glucose, mannitol, total soluble sugars, and total protein in mature leaves, flush leaves, steins, and roots. During the 65 days of episodic growth, 43% of the total soluble sugars was glucose and 33% mannitol. Glucose concentrations of mature leaves decreased during the first root growth episode, increased in almost all plant tissue during a shoot growth episode and decreased in all plant tissue at initiation of a second font growth episode. Mannitol concentrations in the roots and stems …

Optimizing Acceptability Of Chicken Nuggets Containing Fermented Cowpea And Peanut Flours, W. Prinyawiwatkul, K. H. Mcwatters, L. R. Beuchat, R. D. Phillips Jan 1997

Optimizing Acceptability Of Chicken Nuggets Containing Fermented Cowpea And Peanut Flours, W. Prinyawiwatkul, K. H. Mcwatters, L. R. Beuchat, R. D. Phillips

Faculty Publications

A mixture design was used to optimize the sensory acceptability (appearance, color, flavor, texture, and overall liking) of chicken nuggets containing flours processed from fermented cowpeas (FCF) and fermented partially defatted peanuts (FPDPF). Flavor and texture acceptability correlated highly with overall liking of nuggets. Products containing 20% FCF or FPDPF alone or in combination were unacceptable. Nuggets containing a mixture of 2.5% FCF and 2.5% FPDPF were as acceptable as the control, with a sweet, chickeny flavor. This suggests market potential for such poultry products.

God Keep Me From Ever Completing Anything: Problems Of Writing And Identity In Four American Narratives., Ralph Russell Pottle Jan 1997

God Keep Me From Ever Completing Anything: Problems Of Writing And Identity In Four American Narratives., Ralph Russell Pottle

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study examines the relationship between writing and American identity in four works--William Bradford's Of Plymouth Plantation, Benjamin Franklin's Autobiography, Herman Melville's Typee: A Peep at Polynesian Life, and Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Marble Faun: Or The Romance of Monte Beni--by illuminating the difficulty that the narrator of each work has in constructing and maintaining his vision of American identity. For Bradford and Franklin, the analysis centers on their attempts to confront the historical complexities of American society--Bradford confronting the economic realities of colonialism, Franklin confronting the difficulty of organizing governance after the American Revolution. For Melville and Hawthorne, the analysis …

Removal Of Hydrophobic Organic Compounds And Surfactants From Wastewater: Polyaphron-Enhanced Solvent Extraction And Biodegradation., Chunlong Zhang Jan 1997

Removal Of Hydrophobic Organic Compounds And Surfactants From Wastewater: Polyaphron-Enhanced Solvent Extraction And Biodegradation., Chunlong Zhang

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Surfactant based processes are emerging and becoming increasingly important in pollution control. A novel predispersed solvent extraction (PDSE) technique using surfactant based colloidal liquid aphrons (CLAs or polyaphrons) and colloidal gas aphrons (CGAs) for the removal of hydrophobic organic compounds (HOCs) from the aqueous phase was studied. The process involves an extraction of HOCs into CLAs, followed by a flotation using CGAs. Polyaphrons were characterized by a particle size analyzer. The size distribution was found to be bimodal. The effects of surfactant types, surfactant concentrations and storage times on the size distribution were studied. Polyaphrons have long shelf-lives and are …

Graphs And Number Theory., Brian Heck Jan 1997

Graphs And Number Theory., Brian Heck

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In the 1930's, L. Redei and H. Reichardt used certain matrices to aid in the determination of the structure of ideal class groups of quadratic number fields. This is a classical number theoretic problem which in general presents diffculties. Ideal class groups are finite abelian groups, and it is a result of Gauss that allows us to determine their 2-rank, in other words the number of cyclic factors of even order. Redei and Reichardt worked on determining the 4-rank, the number of factors of order divisible by 4. Later, the classical study of circulant graphs was utilized to further help …

A Computer Automated, Hydraulically Integrated Serial Turbidostat Algal Reactor (Histar): Mathematical Modeling And Experimental Analysis., Chandra Sekhar Theegala Jan 1997

A Computer Automated, Hydraulically Integrated Serial Turbidostat Algal Reactor (Histar): Mathematical Modeling And Experimental Analysis., Chandra Sekhar Theegala

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Conceptually, the Hydraulically Integrated Serial Turbidostat Algal Reactor (HISTAR) has two components: (1) sealed turbidostats for producing a high quality algal inoculum, and (2) a series of unprotected inter-connected continuous flow stirred tank reactors (CFSTRs) for mass producing algae under approximated plug flow conditions. The hydraulic retention time of each individual CFSTR ($\theta\sb{\rm n})$ is set low enough (dilution is set high) that any suspended organisms (both contaminants and desired algae) entering the CFSTR would be washed to the next CFSTR well within their doubling time. However, as the turbidostats are employed to inoculate the first CFSTR on an almost …

Quick Computation Of Spatial Autoregressive Estimators, R. Kelley Pace, Ronald Barry Jan 1997

Quick Computation Of Spatial Autoregressive Estimators, R. Kelley Pace, Ronald Barry

Faculty Publications

Spatial estimators usually require the manipulation of n2 relations among n observations and use operations such as determinants, eigenvalues, and inverses whose operation counts grow at a rate proportional to n3. This paper provides ways to quickly compute estimates when the dependent variable follows a spatial autoregressive process, which by appropriate specification of the independent variables can subsume the case when the errors follow a spatial autoregressive process. Since only nearby observations tend to affect a given observation, most observations have no effect and hence the spatial weight matrix becomes sparse. By exploiting sparsity and rearranging computations, …

Model-Driven Simulation Of World-Wide-Web Cache Policies, Ying Shi, Edward Watson, Ye Sho Chen Jan 1997

Model-Driven Simulation Of World-Wide-Web Cache Policies, Ying Shi, Edward Watson, Ye Sho Chen

Faculty Publications

The World Wide Web (WWW) has experienced a dramatic increase in popularity since 1993. Many reports indicate that its growth will continue at an exponential rate. This growth has created a tremendous increase in network loads and user response times. The complexity and diversity of many WWW documents (e.g., texts, images, video, audio, etc.) and the diversity of user requested WWW information require sophisticated WWW cache management strategies. Several popular WWW cache algorithms perform rather poorly and lack mathematical or empirical foundations. As a result, WWW system administrators and browser users are forced to arbitrarily define certain important cache parameters. …

Evaluation Of Alternative Gases For Immiscible Cyclic Injection., Sara Shayegi Jan 1997

Evaluation Of Alternative Gases For Immiscible Cyclic Injection., Sara Shayegi

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Cyclic gas injection processes have been primarily restricted to the use of pure CO$\sb2$ or CO$\sb2$ that has been slightly contaminated with reservoir gases. However, it is difficult to employ CO$\sb2$ in certain circumstances due to transport, economic, or corrosion problems. This study presents the results of laboratory investigations of the cyclic gas injection process using methane, nitrogen and combinations of these gases with CO$\sb2$. Cyclic gas injections were performed at immiscible conditions in consolidated sandstone cores that contained waterflood residual oil under analogous conditions to previous cyclic CO$\sb2$ injections for comparative purposes. Pure methane recovered approximately the same amount …

Non-Conservative Behavior Of Select Naturally-Occurring Radionuclides And Metals In Coastal Waters., Peter Wolfgang Swarzenski Jan 1997

Non-Conservative Behavior Of Select Naturally-Occurring Radionuclides And Metals In Coastal Waters., Peter Wolfgang Swarzenski

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Water column samples from three vastly contrasting coastal regimes (Framvaren Fjord, Norway, the Amazon and Mississippi River outflow regions) were analyzed to study the estuarine transport and scavenging processes of $\sp{210}$Pb, $\sp{210}$Po, $\sp{234}$U and $\sp{238}$U. The Amazon and Mississippi River outflow regions are two of the world's largest river-ocean mixing systems that contrast each other sharply in many physiographical and geochemical features. The Amazon is a tropical, high energy, shelf environment where estuarine physico-chemical processes are strongly influenced by sediment-water interactions. The Mississippi system on the other hand discharges much of its load close to the shelf-break where estuarine geochemical …

Injection Of Species Under Electrical Field To Enhance Bioremediation., Fazle Rabbi Jan 1997

Injection Of Species Under Electrical Field To Enhance Bioremediation., Fazle Rabbi

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Electrokinetics is one of the most viable alternatives for injecting/extracting water, organic and ionic species in low permeability soils as well as heterogeneous media because the transport processes are independent of the pore sizes. A better understanding of the principles offers the opportunity to employ multi-component species transport under electrical fields to inject electron acceptors, nutrients and other process additives for enhancement of in-situ bioremediation in low permeability and heterogeneous media. This study assesses the potential to employ and exploit the principles of multi-component species transport under electrical fields as mean to supplement, enhance and engineer in-situ bioremediation. It was …

Radio-Frequency Impedance Measurements On Thin Films Of Yttrium Barium Copper Oxide., Vibha K. Pant Jan 1997

Radio-Frequency Impedance Measurements On Thin Films Of Yttrium Barium Copper Oxide., Vibha K. Pant

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The Kosterlitz-Thouless phase transition in epitaxial films of YBCO of varying thickness is studied. The phase transition is found to occur in these films in both zero fields and in perpendicular and parallel magnetic fields up to 0.5 T. In addition, the same transition is seen in a lead film of thickness less than the penetration depth in lead. This measurement is used as a calibration to determine the penetration depth in YBCO for both the zero-field case and perpendicular-field case. Once the penetration depth is determined, the effective thickness of the superconducting layer is calculated for all the films. …

Orientation Effects On African-American Engineering Students: The Lsu Case., Forest Dent Smith Jan 1997

Orientation Effects On African-American Engineering Students: The Lsu Case., Forest Dent Smith

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Extended orientation courses continue to be introduced as curriculum offerings that assist students to persist in post-secondary institutions. Research on the outcomes of such courses in terms of student retention and achievement is, with regard to race, however, not proceeding at the same pace as orientation course research in general. The purpose of this study was to apply the attrition models of Tinto (1987) and Pascarella, Terenzini, and Wolfe (1986) and examine extended orientation as a contributing factor to the retention and achievement of African-American engineering students. The sample of the study consisted of 354 African-American students who were members …

Coastal Restoration Using Pipeline-Conveyed Sediments., Catherine Faith Voisin Jan 1997

Coastal Restoration Using Pipeline-Conveyed Sediments., Catherine Faith Voisin

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A spreadsheet program was successfully developed which determines the engineering requirements for pipeline transport of sediments from dredge sites to wetland restorations sites. The program called SLURRY.XLS involves several new correlations. A new correlation for determining the critical velocity of particle transport is presented. New correlations were statistically developed for determining the drag coefficient of particles. The spreadsheet also successfully determines settling velocities of the individual particle sizes in any settling regime. A second spreadsheet program entitled "CONSOL.XLS" uses geotechnical principles of consolidation for determining marsh surface elevation with and without hydraulic fill versus time. The CONSOL.XLS program permits the …

Sediment Transport Processes In Coarse Gravel-Bed Rivers: An Example From Costa Rica., Karolien Johanna Zita Debusschere Jan 1997

Sediment Transport Processes In Coarse Gravel-Bed Rivers: An Example From Costa Rica., Karolien Johanna Zita Debusschere

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study was aimed at gaining a better understanding of the sedimentological and morphological characteristics of boulder-dominated, coarse gravel-bed rivers associated with alluvial fans in humid tropical climates and the transport processes of boulder-size clasts within these systems. The study focused on the Rio Toro Amarillo, a braided, coarse gravel-bed river in Costa Rica which drains an active volcano within the Atlantic Watershed of Costa Rica. The investigation involved mapping and measurement of the distribution of braid complexes and channels; gradient, grain-size distribution, lithofacies, and micromorphology of the channel-beds and bar surfaces; elevational differences between channel bed and bar surface; …

The Moral Atmosphere Of The Elementary School And The Question Of Gender., Suzanne Beauclair Roy Jan 1997

The Moral Atmosphere Of The Elementary School And The Question Of Gender., Suzanne Beauclair Roy

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the moral atmosphere of the elementary school and ask: How does the elementary school principal contribute to the moral atmosphere of the elementary school? In addition to this question, this study also explored the likenesses and differences between male principals and female principals in regard to the degree to which the principal practiced either an "ethic of care" or an "ethic of justice." Four case studies were constructed using data collected from observations and interviews that were conducted in four elementary schools. Also, two female principals and two male principals were …

The Effects Of Sleep Deprivation On Information Processing, New Learning, And Memory In Mildly Head-Injured Subjects With Post-Concussion Symptoms., Brian Betz Jan 1997

The Effects Of Sleep Deprivation On Information Processing, New Learning, And Memory In Mildly Head-Injured Subjects With Post-Concussion Symptoms., Brian Betz

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Subjects who had sustained a mild head injury (MHI) and uninjured control subjects were examined before and after 36 hours of sleep deprivation. MHI subjects and uninjured controls were selected from among individuals who scored above the 50$\rm\sp{th}$ percentile on the Postconcussion Syndrome Checklist (PCSC), a measure designed to assess the frequency, intensity and duration of postconcussion symptoms. Sixty subjects were divided into four groups: Head injured/sleep deprived, head injured/non-sleep deprived, uninjured/sleep deprived, and uninjured/non-sleep deprived. Performance was compared among the groups on the Selective Reminding Test (SRT) and the Paced Auditory Serial Addition Test (PASAT), which are designed to …

Fathers As Intervention Agents: Parent Training With Fathers Of Children With Developmental Disabilities., Deirdre West Russell Jan 1997

Fathers As Intervention Agents: Parent Training With Fathers Of Children With Developmental Disabilities., Deirdre West Russell

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Previous research on parent training with children who have developmental disabilities has typically failed to include fathers. Compared to research on mothers of children with disabilities and fathers of normally developing children, little is known about fathers of children who have disabilities. In the present study, effects of behavioral parent training on fathers' parenting behaviors (instruction giving, positive attention, and correct consequences) were evaluated. The experimenter trained four fathers of children with developmental delays in the home using written handouts, verbal instructions, modeling, and performance feedback. Training was directed at increasing correct use of fathers' instruction giving, positive attention following …
