Complementary Group Resolution Of The Su(N) Outer Multiplicity Problem. Ii. Recoupling Approach For Su(3)⊃U(2) Reduced Wigner Coefficients, Feng Pan, J. P. Draayer

A general procedure for the derivation of SU(3)⊃U(2) reduced Wigner coefficients (RWCs) for the coupling (λ1μ1) × (λ2μ2) ↓ (λ μ)η, where η is the outer multiplicity label required in the decomposition, is proposed based on a recoupling approach that follows the complementary group technique for a resolution of the outer multiplicity of SU(n) introduced in Part (I) of this series. RWCs of SU(n) are not unique under a canonical resolution of the outer multiplicity; the transformation from one set to another are elements of SO(m), where m is the number of occurrences of the (λ μ) irrep in the …
Evolutionary Effects Of Irradiation In Cataclysmic Variables, P. Mccormick, J. Frank
Evolutionary Effects Of Irradiation In Cataclysmic Variables, P. Mccormick, J. Frank
Faculty Publications
The orbital evolution of cataclysmic variables in which the companion is illuminated by a fraction of the accretion luminosity consists of irradiation-driven limit cycles on thermal timescales, superimposed on secular evolution toward shorter periods due to systemic angular momentum losses. We show that positive orbital period derivatives during bright phases are a natural consequence of the expansion of the companion during high mass transfer phases in the limit cycle. The irradiation instability may be enhanced by consequential angular momentum losses J̇CAML accompanying the limit cycle. We investigate the secular evolution of cataclysmic binaries under the combined effects of irradiation and …

Warped H 1 gas layers in the outer regions of spiral galaxies usually display a noticeably twisted structure. This structure almost certainly arises primarily as a result of differential precession in the H I disk as it settles toward a preferred orientation in an underlying dark halo potential well that is not spherically symmetric. In an attempt to better understand the structure and evolution of these twisted, warped disk structures, we have adopted the "twist equation" formalism originally developed by Petterson to study accretion onto compact objects. Utilizing more recent treatments of this formalism, we have generalized the twist equation …

Dimethyl ammonium chloride (DAC, 'Triathlon'), sodium hypochlorite, formaldehyde, and streptomycin ('Agri-mycin 17') were used as dips to treat Zantedeschia rehmannii superba Engl., Zantedeschia elliotiana xmaculata (Hook.) Engl., and Zantedeschia albomaculata (W.Wats.) Baill. rhizomes to control Erwinia soft rot. A 30 rain 200 ppm (mg.L-1) streptomycin dip provided the best control of Erwinia soft rot for all three Zantedeschia species and a 1-hour 10% formaldehyde dip provided the second best control of inoculated rhizomes. Rhizomes inoculated with Erwinia required more days to emerge. Chemical treatments did not affect days to emergence or final plant growth.

This decision case concerns production and marketing problems that many ornamental growers incur. At the retail level, popular ornamental crops are often used as loss leaders to draw the public into stores to make other purchases. As a result, retail buyers are concerned not with quality but with price and volume. To meet the needs of price-conscious buyers, growers may attempt to reduce their production costs by reducing the level of production inputs, with some sacrifice in product quality. The owners of Two Sisters Greenhouses must decide whether they are going to produce lower-quality plants, change marketing strategies, or grow …

Of eight genotypes of cayenne pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) examined, two were identified that differ significantly in ease of fruit detachment force. Greenhouse and field-grown plants of these genotypes, Cajun 1-9027 and Cap-9004, were investigated for differences in cell type and organization at the fruit and receptacle junction. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that mature Cajun 1-9027 fruit that did not separate exhibited a distinct region of sclerified cells that extended from the periphery of the fruit into the receptacle for 25 to 30 cell layers. In contrast, mature fruit of the more readily detachable Cap-9004 had 10 to 15 layers …

A nuclear RAPD marker, OPF182600, was linked to a thermosensitive genetic male sterility (TGMS) gene (tms3) in a rice mutant line IR32364TGMS. Segregation analysis in two mapping populations and reciprocal cross analysis involving different genotypes indicated, however, that this marker was maternally inherited. The RAPD marker was then cloned as pF18 and partially sequenced from both ends of the insert. Sequence analysis showed that pF18 was homologous to mitochondrial genes, cob2 and nad1. Evidence was provided that the cob2 DNA segment near pF18 was genetically linked to tms3. Thus pF18 could be the result of integration of a piece of …

We investigated variation in concentration of the secondary metabolite, camptothecin (CPT), in relation to leaf, branch and tree age, season, and leaf drying method in Camptotheca acuminata Decaisne saplings. Younger leaves contained higher CPT concentrations than older leaves. Within a branch, there was a linear decline in CPT concentration from leaves at the apex of the branch down to Leaf 7. Comparing leaves of similar age, those from younger trees had higher CPT concentrations than those from older trees. Over the course of the growing season, there was a steady decline of 11% per month in leaf CPT concentration. Branches …

Ejaculates from sires were examined by polymerase chain reaction to determine percentage of sperm bearing the Y chromosome. Results were verified by examining the percentage of male calves per ejaculate used in artificial insemination (AI) and the percentage of male piglets per litter from a controlled mating program. Spermatozoal DNA was amplified by polymerase chain reaction with specific primers for the Y chromosome. Image analysis measured the fluorescent intensity of the 194-bp band. Ejaculates were compared with a pooled standard of spermatozoal DNA equated to a 50% Y-bearing sperm ejaculate. Calving data were obtained from information collected for the National …

Removal Of Bovine Serum Albumin From Cow's Milk Using Chicken Egg-Yolk Antibodies Immobilized On Chitosan Gel, Jack N. Losso, John Vanderstoep, Shuryo Nakai
Faculty Publications
Polyclonal chicken antibodies raised against bovine serum albumin (BSA) were immobilized on chitosan gel for the immunoaffinity isolation of BSA from cow's milk. Antibodies (IgY) against BSA were isolated from egg-yolk, purified and antibody reactivity to antigen was measured. lgY developed against BSA was reduced by 2-mercaptoethylamine. The reactivities of reduced and whole IgY against BSA were not significantly different. The reduced IgY was covalently linked to chitosan gel through stable covalent thioether linkages using sulfo-succinimidyl-4-(N-maleimidomethyl)cyclohexane-1-carboxylate (sulfo-SMCC) as a cross-linker. The density of antibody IgY immobilized on chitosan gel was approximately 3-5 mg per ml of chitosan gel. The ligand-binding …

Field studies were performed on established carpetgrass (Axonopus affinis Chase) in 1994 and 1995 to evaluate plant growth regulators (PGRs) and application rates. Trinexapac-ethyl (0.48 kg·ha-1) improved turf quality and reduced cumulative vegetative growth (CVG) of unmowed and mowed plots by 38% and 46%, respectively, in 1995, and suppressed seedhead height in unmowed turf by >31% 6 weeks after treatment (WAT) both years. Mefluidide (0.14 and 0.28 kg·ha-1) had little effect on carpetgrass. Sulfometuron resulted in unacceptable phytotoxicity (>20%) 2 WAT in 1994 and 18% phytotoxicity in 1995. In 1995, sulfometuron reduced mowed carpetgrass CVG 21%, seedhead number 47%, …

The pseudo SU(3) model is shown to be a powerful scheme for describing the excitation spectra as well as B(E2) and 5(M1) transition strengths in heavy deformed nuclei. It is also useful for describing double beta decay amplitudes for transitions from the ground state of an even-even nucleus to the ground and excited states of the daughter nucleus, both for the two and zero neutrino emitting modes. The existence of selection rules which strongly restricts the decays is discussed. Anti-correlations between the quadrupole deformation and the Gamow-Teller (GT+) strength are found in an extension of the pseudo SU(3) …

Changes in substrate oxidation with isoenergetic high-carbohydrate (HC) and high-fat (HF) diets in male nonathletic subjects, aerobically trained athletes, and weight-trained athletes were examined in a crossover study. A whole-room respiration chamber was used to measure 24-h energy expenditure (EE) and substrate oxidation with control, He, or HF diets for 7 d. The nonathletic group had higher 24-h EE (P < 0.05), exercise EE (P < 0.03), and resting metabolic rate (P < 0.04) than did the aerobically trained athletes when these measurements were corrected for lean body mass. Fat oxidation was significantly correlated with lean body mass and diet. However, athletic status had no effect on substrate oxidation. Carbohydrate oxidation across groups increased acutely by 23% after 24 h of the HC diet (P < 0.0001). Carbohydrate balance increased significantly over time with the HC diet (P < 0.002) and decreased acutely after return to the control diet (P < 0.0001). With the HF diet, carbohydrate balance increased and was significantly different from balance with the control diet by day 7 (P < 0.03). Fat balance decreased significantly with both the HF (P < 0.04) and HC (P = 0.0075) diets by day 7. Carbohydrate oxidation correlated with carbohydrate intake with both the control (r = 0.61, P < 0.01) and HC diets (r = 0.59, P < 0.02), but not the HF diet. Fat oxidation was not correlated with fat intake. In conclusion, substrate oxidation in a respiration chamber is significantly affected by diet, but not by prior athletic training.

Using 70,822 observations on housing prices from 1969 to 1991 from Fairfax County Virginia, this article demonstrates the substantial benefits obtained by modeling the spatial as well as the temporal dependence of the data. Specifically, the spatiotemporal autoregression with twelve variables reduced median absolute error by 37.35% relative to an indicator-based model with twenty-six variables. One-step ahead forecasts also document the improved performance of the proposed spatiotemporal model. In addition, the article illustrates techniques for rapidly computing the estimates and shows how to compute indices for any location.

Educational Technology And State Reform: Examining The First-Year Impact Of Louisiana's State Technology Policy On Public School Districts., Jeffrey Paul Gagne
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
During the 1990's educational technology became a major educational policy issue for every state (White, 1997; Education Commission of the States, 1997; National Council of State Legislators, 1996; Trotter, 1997). By early 1998, all 50 states had state-level technology plans in various stages of implementation, and state funding for educational technologies was rapidly increasing across the country (Trotter, 1997). The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of recently enacted Louisiana state-level technology reforms on public school district technology efforts between the 1996--97 and 1997--98 school years. Both quantitative and qualitative methods were used to collect data, creating …
Applications Of Band Ratioing At Fort Irwin, California., Alexander Wright Taylor
Applications Of Band Ratioing At Fort Irwin, California., Alexander Wright Taylor
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation describes the results of two projects that demonstrate the power of band ratioing of remote sensing data. The first method, Band Ratio Differencing (BRD), challenges the more traditional techniques for detecting environmental disturbance of the surface in and terrains. These traditional techniques are inadequate because they cannot identify the nature of the change (physical, chemical, biological) or the processes (natural, anthropogenic) involved in causing the change. In contrast, BRD of Landsat TM data has the advantage of providing information about changes in the composition of alluvial surfaces. These compositional changes, when combined with empirical field data provides insight …
The Role Of Hyperinsulinemia, The Sympathetic Nervous System And Nitric Oxide In Cardiovascular Function During The Development Of Obesity-Induced Hypertension., Agatha T. Borne
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The interaction of hyperinsulinemia, the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) and nitric oxide (NO) was examined in lean and obese unilaterally lumbar sympathectomized dogs. Six lean and six obese dogs were studied while on a treadmill, during hyperinsulinemic euglycemic clamp (HIEC) procedures with and without concurrent nitric oxide synthase (NOS) inhibition with nitro-L-arginine (LNA). Changes in plasma insulin, femoral vascular resistance (FVR), heart rate (HR) and mean arterial pressure (MAP) were measured prior to and during a 7-week overfeeding period, and response to LNA administration was examined in the lean and obese state. Body weight increased from 19.9 $\pm$ 0.70 to …

Effects Of Selected Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons On Cell Proliferation, Protein Phosphorylation, And Intracellular Calcium Concentration In Lepomis Macrochirus., Helen Runnels Connelly
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) have been demonstrated to affect signal transduction in higher vertebrates. In this research, the freshwater species of fish, Lepomis macrochirus (bluegill) was used to test the effects of a 14-day diet of PAH on lymphocyte signal transduction. PAH tested included: 2-aminoanthracene (2-AA), 2-methylnaphthalene (2-MN), 9,10-dimethylanthracene (9,10-DMA), and a mixture of these three compounds (MIX). Individual compounds were tested at a total PAH dose of 3.1 $\pm$ 0.01mg over the 14 day period. The MIX diet was a total PAH dose of 0.13 $\pm$ 0.01mg 2-AA, 0.19 + 0.01mg 9,10-DMA, and 0.22 $\pm$ 0.02mg 2-MN over the …
Living Arrangements Of The Elderly In The United States: Comparing Whites, Blacks, Hispanics, And Asians' Households., Kiyomi Ando
Living Arrangements Of The Elderly In The United States: Comparing Whites, Blacks, Hispanics, And Asians' Households., Kiyomi Ando
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
My dissertation analyzed the living arrangements of the elderly, focusing on differences across gender and racial/ethnic lines. Drawing upon rational choice and family solidarity theoretical perspectives. I derived hypotheses dealing with the effects of individual resources, cultural characteristics, and geographic context on the elderly's living arrangements. These hypotheses were empirically tested using logistic regression models to estimate the odds of the elderly choosing from among three options of living arrangements--independent living, joint living, and dependent living. Separate models were applied to non-Hispanic white, African American, Hispanic, and Asian subsamples. Data were from the 1990 Census Public Use Sample (PUMS-L). The …

Temporal Variation In Larval Fish Condition Indices., Michael John Burger
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A sensitive methodology for the determination of RNA and DNA concentrations was developed which allowed for the quantification of nanogram amounts of both DNA and RNA. The method uses a combination of thiazole orange, a non-specific nucleic acid stain, and the RNA degrading enzyme RNase. Thiazole orange had high fluorescence yield. The fluorescence was additive for combinations of RNA and DNA. The addition of proteinase-K increased the fluorescence of the tissue sample by 100%. Recovery of nucleic acid standards added to tissue extracts yielded $\sim$100% recovery. The method is compatible with assays for protein concentration and electron transport system (ETS) …

Assessing Applicant "Fit" Within The Selection Process: Which Interviewer Perceptions Matter?, Dawn Ebe Haptonstahl
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The research literature has noted that organizations are moving beyond simply hiring individuals with the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) that fulfill the requirements of the job--employers are also looking for people who can fit in with a particular work group or even an entire organization. This study tested an exploratory model that predicted recruiter selection decisions from their evaluations of applicants' person-job (P-J), person-group (P-G), and person-organization (P-O) fit. The model also postulated that P-G and P-O fit would be predicted by the perceived congruence (similarity) of work values between applicants and groups/organizations, Hypotheses were field-tested with 64 …

Indices were established for the Psychopathology Instrument for Mentally Retarded Adults (PIMRA) to signify that a particular score warranted further assessment. The subjects were 431 individuals with mild and moderate mental retardation in state schools and developmental centers in Texas and Louisiana. Almost 65% of the sample met the cutoff for further assessment using the newly established criteria, while approximately 40% of the sample had elevations on two or more of the subscales. Critical items were identified for the Schizophrenia, Affective Disorders, Somatoform Disorders, and Adjustment Disorders subscales. No significant differences were noted for gender with respect to the subscales. …
The Clarity Of The Modern: Or, The Ambiguities Of Henry James And Wallace Stevens., Gregory Angelo Marks
The Clarity Of The Modern: Or, The Ambiguities Of Henry James And Wallace Stevens., Gregory Angelo Marks
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Clarity, in all its various guises, was before the advent of Romanticism looked upon as an unquestioned focus of attention and irrefutable goal of human endeavor. Conversely, ambiguity was seen negatively: it was in language an obstacle to communication; in ethics, an indecisiveness failing action; and in ontology and aesthetics, a slovenly disorder. With Romanticism, this basic consensus regarding these terms ends. No longer an expression of censure, ambiguity is imagined as a liberatory force. Clarity, if attainable at all, is dismissed as mere rigidity. The works of Americans Henry James and Wallace Stevens embody and enact this tension and …
Coincidence And Class In The Victorian Novel., Beverly Maddox Moon
Coincidence And Class In The Victorian Novel., Beverly Maddox Moon
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
In the Victorian novels of this study, Coincidence and Class in the Victorian Novel, coincidence is an unacknowledged paradigm for class mobility. Its role for the most part unremarked, coincidence moves money and property into the hands of the protagonist, allowing the transition between classes to take place. In Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre and Villette, and Wilkie Collins' The Woman in White, coincidence is a paradox in that it accomplishes two very different ends, resolution and conflict, simultaneously. As a narrative device, coincidence camouflages narrative gaps, arranging resolution within the text by allowing improved class position; as a narrative strategy, …
Predicting Driving Ability In Alzheimer's Disease Patients., Judith Rosemary O'Jile
Predicting Driving Ability In Alzheimer's Disease Patients., Judith Rosemary O'Jile
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Studies have shown that individuals with Alzheimer's disease have a greater number of automobile crashes than normal elderly controls. Assessment of driving ability is usually conducted by use of an on-the-road examination. These examinations are costly, time intensive, and sometimes dangerous. Finding other measures that are predictive of driving ability will enable screening of patients to decrease the number of on-road examinations. Alzheimer's disease patients and normal elderly control subjects were administered neuropsychological measures as well as the Driver Performance Test (DPT) and Driver Risk Index (DRI), both videotaped tests of driving knowledge and risk assessment. Driving histories based on …

American Medusa, American Sphinx: The Female Gaze And Knowledge In Modern Fiction And Film., Janet Clare Wondra
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Two major arguments define this study, the first being that the gaze, a concept borrowed from film theory, provides a productive approach to many literary texts, whether central to the canon, like The Sound and the Fury and The Great Gatsby, or relatively new to critical attention, like Nella Larsen's Passing. Locating and following the gaze enables literary critics to bring into focus the power relations within narratives and the scopic negotiations by which hierarchies of privilege are established and maintained. Second, the study both argues and demonstrates that feminist film theory has prematurely closed important avenues of investigation by …
