Conspiratorial Plot: Romance And Intrigue On Both Sides Of The Potomoc, Robert H. Fowler

Civil War Book Review

A work of fiction billed as an historical novel should be reviewed by three standards: what is its literary value? how historically accurate is it? how entertaining is it, or, put differently, is it a "good read"? Only by the last-named standard can On Secret Service be given high marks. F....

Identity Politics: A Secessionist Governor Left His Imprint On Missouri's Culture, Ethan S. Rafuse

Civil War Book Review

The past few years have been highly enjoyable ones for anyone with an interest in the Trans-Mississippi Theater. Not only have outstanding studies of Richard Taylor, Nathaniel Lyon, Pea Ridge, and Wilson's Creek been published, but the exploits of William Clarke Quantrill's guerrillas have even attr....

Into The Jaws Of Death: The 26th North Carolina Smashed The Iron Brigade - And Itself, John S. Benson

Civil War Book Review

Regimental histories are often lost in an endless sea of Civil War books. Their stories can be similar and pale in popular interest to books addressing topics such as the causes of the Civil War or the lives of famous generals. However, some regiments, by luck or fate, found themselves confronted wi....

Kentucky Crossroads: Essays Look At Politics And Combat In Bluegrass Country, William H. Mulligan

Civil War Book Review

More than 70 years have passed since a book has appeared that addresses Kentucky's role in the Civil War and its own internal conflict in the detail that the complexity of the twin issues requires. It cannot be for a lack of drama; nearly everyone who writes on the topic quotes Lincoln about the imp....

Recovered Memory: Kindly 'Daughters Of Maine' Nursed Bodies And Souls, Nancy Scripture Garrison

Civil War Book Review

Driving north from Boston on the way to Southwest Harbor, Maine, I always slow for an intersection outside Ellsworth, familiar now through many summers, where Route 1 joins the road from Blue Hill to form a tree-shaded oasis, remote from the stream of eastbound traffic. Guarding this little park sta....

Chester G. Hearn is a prolific writer who has published an astonishing eight books in the past five years. Most of these concern naval aspects of the Civil War, and five of them, including this one, deal with the war on the Mississippi. Ellet's Brigade is the history of a curious - even bizar....

Surrender And Redemption: A Midwestern Brigade Overcomes Critics And Military Adversaries, Stacy D. Allen

Civil War Book Review

Traditionally, regiments have most often been identified with the shared experiences of the common soldier in the Civil War. However, as is recognized by anyone who examines the War in detail, it was at the brigade level that the overwhelming majority of citizen-soldiers participated in the conflict....

Civil War Book Review

"I knew you as a soldier, a congressman, as governor, and now as President-elect. How shall I address you?" asked a well-wisher shortly after American voters elected William McKinley. "Call me Major," McKinley replied. "I earned that. I am not so sure of the rest." William H. Armstrong, an Ohioan an....

Waiting For The Bugle: Camp Life Offered Troops Rest, Diversions, And Reflection, Meg Galante-Deangelis

Civil War Book Review

Every year hundreds of books are published recounting the story of this or that battle, of one or another officer. Some of the works bring to light stories never before written; others reveal another perspective on an oft-told tale. But in Beyond the Battlefield, David Madden offers a fascina....

Twenty-five years ago, buoyed by the Bicentennial Spirit, I ventured in my Dodge Dart upon a nationwide odyssey of America, giving prearranged and impromptu readings from my fiction. Springfield, Illinois, was my first stop. Listening to the African-American guide in Lincoln's house, I noticed a boo....

Acetyl-CoA carboxylase catalyzes the first committed step in fatty acid synthesis. In Escherichia coli, the enzyme is composed of three distinct protein components: biotin carboxylase, biotin carboxyl carrier protein, and carboxyltransferase. The biotin carboxylase component has served for many years as a paradigm for mechanistic studies devoted toward understanding more complicated biotin-dependent carboxylases. The three-dimensional x-ray structure of an unliganded form of E. coli biotin carboxylase was originally solved in 1994 to 2.4-Å resolution. This study revealed the architecture of the enzyme and demonstrated that the protein belongs to the ATP-grasp superfamily. Here we describe the three-dimensional structure of the …

Direct Nitric Oxide Signal Transduction Via Nitrosylation Of Iron-Sulfur Centers In The Soxr Transcription Activator, Huangen Ding, Bruce Demple May 2000

Direct Nitric Oxide Signal Transduction Via Nitrosylation Of Iron-Sulfur Centers In The Soxr Transcription Activator, Huangen Ding, Bruce Demple

Faculty Publications

Nitric oxide (NO) has diverse roles in intercellular communication and (at higher levels) in immune-mediated cell killing. NO reacts with many cellular targets, with cell-killing effects correlated to inactivation of key enzymes through nitrosylation of their iron-sulfur centers. SoxR protein, a redox-sensitive transcription activator dependent on the oxidation state of its binuclear iron-sulfur ([2Fe-2S]) centers, is also activated in Escherichia coli on exposure to macrophage-generated NO. We show here that SoxR activation by NO occurs through direct modification of the [2Fe-2S] centers to form protein-bound dinitrosyl-iron-dithiol adducts, which we have observed both in intact bacterial cells and in purified SoxR …

On The Non-Uniqueness Of Q-Cones Of Matroids, James Oxley, Geoff Whittle May 2000

On The Non-Uniqueness Of Q-Cones Of Matroids, James Oxley, Geoff Whittle

Faculty Publications

Let M be a rank-r simple GF(q)-representable matroid. A q-cone of M is a matroid M′ that is constructed by embedding M in a hyperplane of PG(r,q), adding a point p of PG(r,q) not on H, and then adding all the points of PG(r,q) that are on lines joining p to an element of M. If r(M) > 2 and M is uniquely representable over GF(q), then M′ is unique up to isomorphism. This note settles a question made explicit by Kung by showing that if r(M) = 2 or if M is not uniquely representable over GF(q), then M′ need …

On The 3-Connected Matroids That Are Minimal Having A Fixed Spanning Restriction, Manoel Lemos, James Oxley

Faculty Publications

Let N be a minor of a 3-connected matroid M and let M′ be a 3-connected minor of M that is minimal having N as a minor. This paper commences the study of the problem of finding a best-possible upper bound on |E(M′) - E(N)|. The main result solves this problem in the case that N and M have the same rank. © 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
