Gamma-Ray Bursts Have Millisecond Variability, Katharine C. Walker, Bradley E. Schaefer, E. E. Fenimore Jul 2000

Gamma-Ray Bursts Have Millisecond Variability, Katharine C. Walker, Bradley E. Schaefer, E. E. Fenimore

Faculty Publications

We have performed searches for isolated flares and for steady flickering in the initial ∼ 1 s of gamma-ray burst light curves on the microsecond to millisecond timescales. Two bursts among our sample of 20 revealed four isolated flares with timescales from 256 to 2048 μs. A wavelet analysis for our sample showed low-level flickering for all bursts on timescales from 256 μs to 33 ms, with the majority of bursts containing rise times faster than 4 ms and 30% having rise times faster than 1 ms. These results show that millisecond variability is common in classical bursts and not …

Theoretical Studies Of The Reactivity Of Cyclopentadienyl Nitrosyl Alkyl Species Of Molybdenum And Tungsten, Rinaldo Poli, Kevin M. Smith Jul 2000

Theoretical Studies Of The Reactivity Of Cyclopentadienyl Nitrosyl Alkyl Species Of Molybdenum And Tungsten, Rinaldo Poli, Kevin M. Smith

Faculty Publications

The reactivity differences observed experimentally for Cp*W(NO)(CH2CMe3)2 and CpMo(NO)(CH2CMe3)2 have been investigated using density functional theory (DFT) techniques. The reactions of the CpW(NO)(CH2) model complex with NH3 and CH4 are more exothermic and have lower activation barriers than the corresponding processes for CpMo(NO)(CH2). The η2(C,H) methane complex CpM(NO)(CH2)(CH4) (M = Mo, W) can undergo two competitive processes: C-H activation to afford CpM(NO)(CH3)2 or loss of methane. The relative barrier heights are almost identical for M = W, whereas the formation of CpM(NO)(CH3)2 is significantly disfavored for M = Mo. The activation of C-H and N-H bonds proceeds via a direct, …

Surfaces, Tree-Width, Clique-Minors, And Partitions, Guoli Ding, Bogdan Oporowski, Daniel P. Sanders, Dirk Vertigan Jul 2000

Surfaces, Tree-Width, Clique-Minors, And Partitions, Guoli Ding, Bogdan Oporowski, Daniel P. Sanders, Dirk Vertigan

Faculty Publications

In 1971, Chartrand, Geller, and Hedetniemi conjectured that the edge set of a planar graph may be partitioned into two subsets, each of which induces an outerplanar graph. Some partial results towards this conjecture are presented. One such result, in which a planar graph may be thus edge partitioned into two series-parallel graphs, has nice generalizations for graphs embedded onto an arbitrary surface and graphs with no large clique-minor. Several open questions are raised. © 2000 Academic Press.

Type 1 Plasminogen Activator Inhibitor Binds To Fibrin Via Vitronectin, Thomas J. Podor, Cynthia B. Peterson, Daniel A. Lawrence, Steingrimur Stefansson, Stephen G. Shaughnessy, Denise M. Foulon, Martin Butcher, Jeffrey I. Weitz Jun 2000

Faculty Publications

Type 1 plasminogen activator inhibitor (PAI-1), the primary inhibitor of tissue-type plasminogen activator (t-PA), circulates as a complex with the abundant plasma glycoprotein, vitronectin. This interaction stabilizes the inhibitor in its active conformation. In this report, the effects of vitronectin on the interactions of PAI-1 with fibrin clots were studied. Confocal microscopic imaging of platelet-poor plasma clots reveals that essentially all fibrin-associated PAI-1 colocalizes with fibrin-bound vitronectin. Moreover, formation of platelet-poor plasma clots in the presence of polyclonal antibodies specific for vitronectin attenuated the inhibitory effects of PAI-1 on t-PA-mediated fibrinolysis. Addition of vitronectin during clot formation markedly potentiates PAI-1-mediated …

Pseudo Su(3) Shell Model: Normal Parity Bands In Odd-Mass Nuclei, C. E. Vargas, J. G. Hirsch, J. P. Draayer

Faculty Publications

A pseudo shell SU(3) model description of normal parity bands in 159Tb is presented. The Hamiltonian includes spherical Nilsson single-particle energies, the quadrupole-quadrupole and pairing interactions, as well as three rotor terms. A systematic parametrization is introduced, accompanied by a detailed discussion of the effect each term in the Hamiltonian has on the energy spectrum. Yrast and excited band wavefunctions are analyzed together with their B(E2) values. © 2000 Elsevier Science B.V.

Ocean Drilling Program Leg 176 deepened Hole 735B in gabbroic lower ocean crust by 1 km to 1.5 km. The section has the physical properties of seismic layer 3, and a total magnetization sufficient by itself to account for the overlying lineated sea-surface magnetic anomaly. The rocks from Hole 735B are principally olivine gabbro, with evidence for two principal and many secondary intrusive events. There are innumerable late small ferrogabbro intrusions, often associated with shear zones that cross-cut the olivine gabbros. The ferrogabbros dramatically increase upward in the section. Whereas there are many small patches of ferrogabbro representing late iron- …

On Size, Circumference And Circuit Removal In 3-Connected Matroids, Manoel Lemos, James Oxley

Faculty Publications

This paper proves several extremal results for 3-connected matroids. In particular, it is shown that, for such a matroid M, (i) if the rank r(M) of M is at least six, then the circumference c(M) of M is at least six and, provided |E(M)| ≥4r(M) - 5, there is a circuit whose deletion from M leaves a 3-connected matroid; (ii) if r(M) ≥4 and M has a basis B such that M\e is not 3-connected for all e in E(M) - B, then |E(M)| ≤3r(M) - 4; and (iii) if M is minimally 3-connected but not hamiltonian, then |E(M)| ≤3r(M) …

Unusual Magnetism Of Hexaborides, H. R. Ott, J. L. Gavilano, B. Ambrosini, P. Vonlanthen, E. Felder, L. Degiorgi, D. P. Young, Z. Fisk, R. Zysler

Faculty Publications

Various recent experimental investigations have revealed unusual magnetic properties of hexaborides with divalent cations M2+. EuB6 is ferromagnetic below 16 K and its low-temperature properties show remarkable similarities to those of manganese oxides, exhibiting the phenomenon of colossal magnetoresistance. Close to the phase transition as well as far below the ordering temperature, EuB6 exhibits anomalous features, that are briefly discussed. Alkaline-earth hexaborides are close to a metal-insulator transition and it has been found that, in a narrow range of electron doping, an itinerant-type of ferromagnetic order, stable up to temperatures of the order of 600-900 K, is established. This remarkable …

Staffing The War: Grant's Innovative Staff Structure Went Unimitated By Other Generals, Benjamin Franklin Cooling

Civil War Book Review

Behind every successful general lies a good staff. Staff development has accompanied the evolution of the profession of arms, and today's revolution in military affairs (the impact of the Information Age) seems unlikely to change that dependency. Yet professional military staffs emerged more quickly....

The Many Curiosities Of Webb Garrison, Morgan Knull

Civil War Book Review

Although a half-century separated us in age, when I was introduced to Webb Garrison, he remained very much in his prime. The author of 50 books, six alone in the past year, his annual output exceeded what some writers produce in a lifetime. When he died in July, at age 81, he still was going steady,....

Old Soldiers Never Die: Grant's Most Unrelenting Foe Was The Press, William D. Bushnell

Civil War Book Review

Ulysses S. Grant, the soldier who won the Civil War and saved the Union, remains an enigma, a wildly popular national figure who was both a monumental success as a soldier and a dismal failure as a civilian. Much has been written about Grant the soldier, but now author Max Byrd cleverly explores the....
