Crystalline films of [formula omitted] grown on (100) [formula omitted] substrates by rf sputtering have been investigated using magnetic circular dichroism and inverse photoemission spectroscopy. We find evidence for strong hybridization between unoccupied levels associated with Mn 3d and O 2p states. The oxygen atoms “pick-up” a small magnetic moment through hybridization with Mn. © 2000, American Institute of Physics. All rights reserved.

The extra sex combs (ESC) and Enhancer of zeste [E(Z)] proteins, members of the Polycomb group (PcG) of transcriptional repressors, interact directly and are coassociated in fly embryos. We report that these two proteins are components of a 600-kDa complex in embryos. Using gel filtration and affinity chromatography, we show that this complex is biochemically distinct from previously described complexes containing the PcG proteins Polyhomeotic, Polycomb, and Sex comb on midleg. In addition, we present evidence that ESC is phosphorylated in vivo and that this modified ESC is preferentially associated in the complex with E(Z). Modified ESC accumulates between 2 …

Subsisting On Non-Livable Wages: Women In Pittsburgh's Public Housing, Laurel Jeanne Person
Subsisting On Non-Livable Wages: Women In Pittsburgh's Public Housing, Laurel Jeanne Person
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
With the largest per capita public housing stock in the United States, Pittsburgh has been wrestling with policy reforms throughout the 1990s. The federal Hope VI program was instituted by the Clinton administration in an effort to revamp the nation’s public housing system. Though the program’s intentions are admirable, the results in Pittsburgh have been injurious. Long-term residents have lost the only place they knew as home, families stay in shelters until appropriate units become available, and Hope VI diverts funds from restoration projects to meet the Housing Authority’s political agenda. Given this volatile situation in the “Iron City”, I …
Anomalous Shape Recognition Using Computer Vision, Chang-Sik Kim
Anomalous Shape Recognition Using Computer Vision, Chang-Sik Kim
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
In this research, a new method for anomalous shape recognition, named Curvature-Angular Descriptor (CAD), was written. The CAD generates shape feature vectors from a given curve shape. These vectors can be used to uniquely characterize the shape.
The sweet potato has one of the most irregular shapes of any fruit or vegetable. The Standards for Grades of sweet potato shapes (The Code of Federal Regulation, title 7 Agriculture, 1995) are very subjective. For this reason, the sweet potato was chosen as an anomalous shape for evaluating the CAD. The CAD was applied using two methods for sweet potato shape recognition. …

Gamma-Ray Burst Host Galaxies Have "Normal" Luminosities, Bradley E. Schaefer
Gamma-Ray Burst Host Galaxies Have "Normal" Luminosities, Bradley E. Schaefer
Faculty Publications
The galactic environment of gamma-ray bursts can provide good evidence about the nature of the progenitor system, with two old arguments implying that the burst host galaxies are significantly subluminous. New data and new analysis have now reversed this picture: (1) Even though the first two known host galaxies are indeed greatly subluminous, the next eight hosts have absolute magnitudes typical for a population of field galaxies. A detailed analysis of the 16 known hosts (10 with redshifts) shows them to be consistent with a Schlechter luminosity function with R* = -21.8 ± 1.0, as expected for normal galaxies. (2) …

The Flux Ratio Method For Determining The Dust Attenuation Of Starburst Galaxies, Karl D. Gordon, Geoffrey C. Clayton, Adolf N. Witt, K. A. Misselt
Faculty Publications
The presence of dust in starburst galaxies complicates the study of their stellar populations as the dust's effects are similar to those associated with changes in the galaxies' stellar ages and metallicities. This degeneracy can be overcome for starburst galaxies if UV/optical/near-infrared observations are combined with far-infrared observations. We present the calibration of the flux ratio method for calculating the dust attenuation at a particular wavelength, Att(λ), based on the measurement of the F(IR)/ F(λ) flux ratio. Our calibration is based on spectral energy distributions from the PEGASE stellar evolutionary synthesis model and the effects of dust (absorption and scattering) …

"Lest We Forget": Louisiana's United Daughters Of The Confederacy And Southern Identity, Alicia Adams
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC) organized in 1894 and became one of the largest and most popular patriotic societies among white southern women. The Louisiana Division of the UDC formed in 1899 and joined the national organization in its educational, memorial, literary, social, and benevolent pursuits. The women of the UDC studied history and created memories of the Confederacy and of the southern past in order to shape their identity and fulfill their needs in the present. In response to changing times, Louisiana's Daughters of the Confederacy forged an identity that encompassed three facets -- their status as …
