Group Actions On Central Simple Algebras, Daniel S. Sage
Group Actions On Central Simple Algebras, Daniel S. Sage
Faculty Publications
Let G be a group, F a field, and A a finite-dimensional central simple algebra over F on which G acts by F-algebra automorphisms. We study the subalgebras and ideals of A which are preserved by the group action. We prove a structure theorem and two classification theorems for invariant subalgebras under suitable hypotheses on A. We illustrate these results in the case of compact connected Lie groups and give some other applications. We also classify invariant ideals. © 2002 Elsevier Science (USA).

The Evolving Accretion Disc In The Black Hole X-Ray Transient Xte J1859+226, R. I. Hynes, C. A. Haswell, S. Chaty, C. R. Shrader, W. Cui
Faculty Publications
We present HST, RXTE, and UKIRT observations of the broad-band spectra of the black hole X-ray transient XTE J1859+226 during the decline from its 1999-2000 outburst. Our UV spectra define the 2175-Å interstellar absorption feature very well and based on its strength we estimate E(B - V) = 0.58 ± 0.12. Hence we deredden our spectra and follow the evolution of the spectral energy distribution on the decline from outburst. We find that the UV and optical data, and the X-ray thermal component when detectable, can be fitted with a simple blackbody model of an accretion disc heated by internal …

We present a spectrophotometric study of short-term optical variability in the quiescent black hole X-ray transit V404 Cyg. This includes two nights of high-time-resolution Hα spectroscopy with which we resolve much of the time variability, and a further six nights of archival spectroscopy with lower time resolution but higher spectral resolution. We find significant variability in most of the data considered, with both the Hα line and the continuum often varying in a correlated way. This includes both dramatic flares lasting a few hours in which the line flux nearly doubles and lower-level flickering. The strongest flares involve development of …

The export economy of the South has contributed a distinct legacy to the rest of America: tobacco and Wal-Mart, George Washington and George Wallace, Billy Graham and Louis Armstrong. Its insular, even tribal culture produces a style of literature and politics that, in turn, ca....Tribes And Tribulations: Barbara Cloud Explores Issues Of Family And War, Laura Ng

A new 7 μs isomer in the drip line nucleus 140Dy was selected from the products of the 54Fe (315 MeV) + 92Mo reaction by a recoil mass spectrometer and studied with recoil-delayed γ-γ coincidences. Five cascading γ transitions were interpreted as the decay of an Iπ = 8- {ν9/2-[514]⊗ ν7/2+[404]} Kisomer (T 1/2 = 7.0(5) μs) via the ground-state band. The probability of proton emission from 141Ho to the 0+ ground state and to the 2+ excited state in 140Dy is discussed.
Looking Forward To The Past, Laura Ng
Looking Forward To The Past, Laura Ng
Civil War Book Review
For me, the New Year embodies a sentiment best expressed by President John F. Kennedy: "We must use time as a tool, not as a couch." And while the turning of the calendar begs for a nostalgic mental journey into the past, it is the historian and history lover that truly understand the power of this ....

Review: The Issue Of Dystocia Expressed When Sires Varying In Percent Bos Indicus Inheritance Are Mated To Bos Taurus Females., F. A. Thrift, D. E. Franke, T. A. Thrift
Faculty Publications
This review reveals that dystocia, with associated increased mortality and(or) reduced survival rate, can be a problem when sires varying in percent Bos indicus inheritance are mated to Bos taurus females. The fact that male calves resulting from these matings are gestated longer and have considerably heavier birth BW than heifer calves is a major contributor to this increased dystocia. A small number of studies involving Brahman sires have indicated larger birth BW for late-born calves in spring calving programs. Furthermore, several studies have documented poor reproductive performance of Brahman bulls, which contributes to subsequent delayed birth of their calves. …

Some Cyclic Covers Of Complements Of Arrangements, Daniel C. Cohen, Peter Orlik
Faculty Publications
Motivated by the Milnor fiber of a central arrangement, we study the cohomology of a family of cyclic covers of the complement of an arbitrary arrangement. We give an explicit proof of the polynomial periodicity of the Betti numbers of the members of this family of cyclic covers. © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Two Splice Variants Of Nopp140 In Drosophila Melanogaster, John M. Waggener, Patrick J. Dimario
Two Splice Variants Of Nopp140 In Drosophila Melanogaster, John M. Waggener, Patrick J. Dimario
Faculty Publications
The Nopp140 gene of Drosophila maps within 79A5 of chromosome 3. Alternative splicing yields two variants. DmNopp140 (654 residues) is the sequence homolog of vertebrate Nopp140. Its carboxy terminus is 64% identical to that of the prototypical rat Noppl40. DmNopp140-RGG (688 residues) is identical to DmNopp140 throughout its first 551 residues, but its carboxy terminus contains a glycine/arginine-rich domain that is often found in RNA-binding proteins such as vertebrate nucleolin. Both Drosophila variants localize to nucleoli in Drosophila Schneider II cells and Xenopus oocytes, specifically within the dense fibrillar components. In HeLa cells, DmNopp140-RGG localizes to intact nucleoli, whereas DmNopp140 …
Interferon-Γ-Mediated Activation And Ubiquitin-Proteasome-Dependent Degradation Of Pparγ In Adipocytes, Z. Elizabeth Floyd, Jacqueline M. Stephens
Interferon-Γ-Mediated Activation And Ubiquitin-Proteasome-Dependent Degradation Of Pparγ In Adipocytes, Z. Elizabeth Floyd, Jacqueline M. Stephens
Faculty Publications
Interferon-γ (IFNγ) treatment of adipocytes results in a down-regulation of the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPARγ). The decrease in PPARγ expression is mediated by inhibition of PPARγ synthesis and increased degradation of PPARγ. In this study, we demonstrate that both PPARγ1 and PPARγ2 are targeted to the proteasome under basal conditions and that PPARγ1 is more labile than PPARγ2. The IFNγ-induced increase in PPARγ turnover is blocked by proteasome inhibition and is accompanied by an increase in PPARγ-polyubiquitin conjugates. In addition, IFNγ treatment results in the transcriptional activation of PPARγ. Similar to ligand-dependent activation of PPARγ, IFNγ-induced activation was greater …

The Family Blood Pressure Program (FBPP) consists of 4 independently established multicenter networks of investigators who have complementary approaches to the genetics of blood pressure levels and hypertension. The program has recruited participants from the African American, Mexican American, Asian, and non-Hispanic white populations. Each network utilized study designs, laboratory measurements, and analytic methods that made efficient use of the unique characteristics of their populations and the investigators expertise. The individual networks subsequently unified core study components into a single cohesive program. The unified FBPP includes (1) standardized clinic and laboratory protocols for core variables to facilitate direct comparison of …
