High subsidence rates are inherent to coastal deltas worldwide, contributing to rapid rates of relative sea-level rise and compromising the sustainability of coastal wetlands. Different parts of river deltas, however, experience accretion or erosion, depending on the coupling between ecological and morphological processes. Wetland expansion occurs in active deltaic coastal basins that are connected to riverine sedimentation. In contrast, wetland degradation occurs in inactive deltaic coastal basins where river engineering strategies associated with flood control restrict river connectivity. Here, we investigated the relative role of inorganic and organic loading to marsh accretion rates spanning fresh to brackish to saline zones …

Managed treatment wetlands technology is now used around the world to treat wastewater and stormwater by removing nutrients and other contaminants to obtain a desired water quality. In this paper we present a brief review of a large-scale application of the nature-based technology known as stormwater treatment areas (STAs). These STAs were constructed to treat agricultural and urban runoff to reduce outflow total phosphorus (TP) concentrations to < 20 μg P L−1, which is required to protect downstream water quality and preserve the remaining Everglades ecosystem. Five STAs with a total area of approximately 25,000 ha were built at strategic locations to reduce …

Spatial And Temporal Distribution Of Juvenile Gulf Sturgeon In The Pearl River, Louisiana, And Adjacent Estuaries Of The Gulf Of Mexico, Ashley M. Baer, Glenn C. Constant, Kayla D. Kimmel, Michael A. Dance, Jenna N. Brogdon

Faculty Publications

Objective: Acoustic telemetry was used to examine the spatial-temporal distribution and anadromous migration pattern of juvenile Gulf Sturgeon Acipenser desotoi within the Pearl River and associated coastal estuaries of Louisiana and Mississippi. Methods: Acoustic transmitters were surgically implanted in 52 juvenile Gulf Sturgeon (< 890 mm fork length) from the Pearl River between 2016 and 2019. Sturgeon were monitored on 247 acoustic receivers in the lower Pearl River and adjacent estuaries across numerous partnering arrays. Result: Juveniles were detected on receivers from Lake Pontchartrain, Louisiana, east to Bay St. Louis, and Biloxi Bay, Mississippi. The 3-year study found that juvenile Gulf Sturgeon migration in the Pearl River occurred on cycles similar to those reported from other populations. Juveniles were rarely observed in the estuary and nearshore marine environments from May through mid-October of each year, during which time most sturgeon inhabited the Pearl River. Conversely, most of the juveniles inhabited coastal estuaries from December through February of each year and were rarely observed in freshwater environments during this period. Migration from the river into the estuary occurred during late-October through November, and migration from the estuary into the river occurred in March and April. Distribution patterns varied spatially within the river and estuary ecosystems during each phase of migration. Tagged juveniles occupied the lowest 40 km of the Pearl River while in freshwater, and they occupied the northeastern shoreline of Lake Pontchartrain and Bay St. Louis while in the estuary. Interestingly, juveniles seemed to target specific areas in the estuary during winter that were farther away from the mouth of natal rivers than has been previously reported. Conclusion: This study provides a new assessment of juvenile Gulf Sturgeon migration and seasonal distribution for the Pearl River and provides important information for designing and assessing the potential benefits and challenges of habitat restoration for Gulf Sturgeon.

Evaluation Of Esterases Hydrolyzing Α-Naphthyl Acetate As Markers For Malathion Resistance In Culex Quinquefasciatus, Vivek Pokhrel, James A. Ottea

Faculty Publications

Early detection of insecticide resistance is essential to develop resistance countermeasures and depends on accurate and rapid biological and biochemical tests to monitor resistance and detect associated mechanisms. Many such studies have measured activities of esterases, enzymes associated with resistance to ester- containing insecticides, using the model substrate, α-naphthyl acetate (α-NA). However, in the field, pests are exposed to ester-containing insecticides such as malathion, that are structurally distinct from α-NA. In the current study, malathion resistance in C. quinquefasciatus (3.2- to 10.4-fold) was highly associated with esterase activity measured with either α-NA (R2 = 0.92) or malathion (R2 = 0.90). …

Pea Leaf Weevil, Sitona Lineatus (L.) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), Adult Feeding Preference And Larval Development On Pulse Crop Varieties In Montana, Pragya Kiju, Kevin W. Wanner, Michael Ivie, Kevin Mcphee, Gadi V.P. Reddy

Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Montana accounts for approximately 45% of US dry pea production and the pea leaf weevil (PLW; Sitona lineatus (L.)) is the most common insect pest in this region. After crop emergence adult PLW feed on the foliage to mature and subsequently mate, and the soil-dwelling larvae feed and develop on the nitrogen-fixing root nodules. Producers commonly apply prophylactic insecticide treatments to the seed at planting as well as one or two post-emergent insecticide sprays to control PLW damage. To develop alternative management strategies based on integrated pest management (IPM), this field study evaluated pulse crops grown in Montana for …

Spatiotemporal Changes In The Slavery-Inequality Relationship: The Diffusion Of The Legacy Of Slavery, Heather A. O'Connell, Katherine J. Curtis, Alex Mikulas, Jack Dewaard, Junho Lee

Faculty Publications

Despite the persistence of relationships between historical racist violence and contemporary Black-White inequality, research indicates, in broad strokes, that the slavery-inequality relationship in the United States has changed over time. Identifying the timing of such change across states can offer insights into the underlying processes that generate Black-White inequality. In this study, we use integrated nested Laplace approximation models to simultaneously account for spatial and temporal features of panel data for Southern counties during the period spanning 1900 to 2018, in combination with data on the concentration of enslaved people from the 1860 census. Results provide the first evidence on …

The liver is a large organ with crucial functions in metabolism and immune defense, as well as blood homeostasis and detoxification, and it is clearly in bidirectional communication with the brain and rest of the body via both neural and humoral pathways. A host of neural sensory mechanisms have been proposed, but in contrast to the gut-brain axis, details for both the exact site and molecular signaling steps of their peripheral transduction mechanisms are generally lacking. Similarly, knowledge about function-specific sensory and motor components of both vagal and spinal access pathways to the hepatic parenchyma is missing. Lack of progress …

Particulate matter (PM) containing environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFR) is formed by the incomplete combustion of organic wastes, resulting in the chemisorption of pollutants to the surface of PM containing redox-Active transition metals. In prior studies in mice, EPFR inhalation impaired endothelium-dependent vasodilation. These findings were associated with aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) activation in the alveolar type-II (AT-II) cells that form the air-blood interface in the lung. We thus hypothesized that AhR activation in AT-II cells promotes the systemic release of mediators that promote endothelium dysfunction peripheral to the lung. To test our hypothesis, we knocked down AhR in AT-II …

Dimensions Of Parenting And Children’S Conduct Problems: The Importance Of Considering Children’S Callous–Unemotional Traits, Carolina Facci, Andrea Baroncelli, Paul J. Frick, Enrica Ciucci

Faculty Publications

Research has clearly indicated that the development of serious behavioral problems in children and adolescents is influenced by parenting. However, recent research has refined the role of parenting by showing the importance of distinguishing between different types of parenting and in considering the role of callous–unemotional traits (CU traits) and conduct problems (CP) of the children. In the current study, we advance this research by distinguishing between emotional (e.g., parental warmth; parental hostility) and behavioral (e.g., use of positive reinforcement; inconsistent discipline/harsh discipline) aspects of parenting and by considering the way parents respond to children’s emotions (i.e., coaching and dismissing). …

Thermogenic beige adipocytes are recognized as potential therapeutic targets for combating metabolic diseases. However, the metabolic advantages that they offer are compromised with aging. Here we show that treating mice with estrogen (E2), a hormone that decreases with age, can counteract the age-related decline in beige adipogenesis when exposed to cold temperature while concurrently enhancing energy expenditure and improving glucose tolerance in mice. Mechanistically, we found that nicotinamide phosphoribosyl transferase (NAMPT) plays a pivotal role in facilitating the formation of E2-induced beige adipocytes, which subsequently suppresses the onset of age-related endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress. Furthermore, we found that targeting NAMPT …

Caloric restriction (CR) modifies lifespan and aging biology in animal models. The Comprehensive Assessment of Long-Term Effects of Reducing Intake of Energy (CALERIE™) 2 trial tested translation of these findings to humans. CALERIE™ randomized healthy, nonobese men and premenopausal women (age 21–50y; BMI 22.0–27.9 kg/m2), to 25% CR or ad-libitum (AL) control (2:1) for 2 years. Prior analyses of CALERIE™ participants' blood chemistries, immunology, and epigenetic data suggest the 2-year CR intervention slowed biological aging. Here, we extend these analyses to test effects of CR on telomere length (TL) attrition. TL was quantified in blood samples collected at baseline, 12-, …

Supernova remnants (SNRs) provide insights into cosmic-ray acceleration and magnetic field dynamics at shock fronts. Recent X-ray polarimetric measurements by the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) have revealed radial magnetic fields near particle acceleration sites in young SNRs, including Cassiopeia A, Tycho, and SN 1006. We present here the spatially resolved IXPE X-ray polarimetric observation of the northwestern rim of SNR RX J1713.7–3946. For the first time, our analysis shows that the magnetic field in the particle acceleration sites of this SNR is oriented tangentially with respect to the shock front. Because of the lack of precise Faraday rotation measurements …

We report the discovery of X-ray polarization from the X-ray-bright filament G0.13-0.11 in the Galactic center (GC) region. This filament features a bright, hard X-ray source that is most plausibly a pulsar wind nebula (PWN) and an extended and structured diffuse component. Combining the polarization signal from IXPE with the imaging/spectroscopic data from Chandra, we find that X-ray emission of G0.13-0.11 is highly polarized PD = 57(±18)% in the 3-6 keV band, while the polarization angle is PA = 21° ± 9). This high degree of polarization proves the synchrotron origin of the X-ray emission from G0.13-0.11. In turn, the …

We report on an observational campaign on the bright black hole (BH) X-ray binary Swift J1727.8-1613 centered around five observations by the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer. These observations track for the first time the evolution of the X-ray polarization of a BH X-ray binary across a hard to soft state transition. The 2-8 keV polarization degree decreased from ∼4% to ∼3% across the five observations, but the polarization angle remained oriented in the north-south direction throughout. Based on observations with the Australia Telescope Compact Array, we find that the intrinsic 7.25 GHz radio polarization aligns with the X-ray polarization. Assuming …

First-order phase transitions in the very early universe are a prediction of many extensions of the Standard Model of particle physics and could provide the departure from equilibrium needed for a dynamical explanation of the baryon asymmetry of the Universe. They could also produce gravitational waves of a frequency observable by future space-based detectors such as the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna. All calculations of the gravitational wave power spectrum rely on a relativistic version of the classical nucleation theory of Cahn-Hilliard and Langer, due to Coleman and Linde. The high purity and precise control of pressure and temperature achievable in …
