Storying History: A Narrative Study On The Use Of Podcasts And Podcasting In Secondary Social Studies Classrooms, Elizabeth A. Shoenberger
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation explores the use of Podcasts and Podcasting in secondary social studies classrooms through via narrative inquiry. This study aims to understand how educators use these technologies in their classrooms to facilitate student learning by focusing two specific domains of the TPACK model by Kohler and Mishra (2009): Technological Pedagogical Knowledge (TPK) and Technological Content Knowledge (TCK). This research was motivated by my personal need to engage my own students who, as 21st-century learners, are deeply involved in technology and a desire for a new method for teaching historical content.
The research questions address how teachers describe …

The dynamics of cyclopentadiene (CP) following optical excitation at 243 nm was investigated by time-resolved pump-probe X-ray scattering using 16.2 keV X-rays at the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS). We present the first ultrafast structural evidence that the reaction leads directly to the formation of bicyclo[2.1.0]pentene (BP), a strained molecule with three- and four-membered rings. The bicyclic compound decays via a thermal backreaction to the vibrationally hot CP with a time constant of 21 ± 3 ps. A minor channel leads to ring-opened structures on a subpicosecond time scale.
The Collaborative Assessment And Management Of Suicdality As A Single Session Intervention For Patients Admitted To Inpatient Psychiatric Care For Suicidal Thoughts And Behaviors, D Nicolas Oakey-Frost
The Collaborative Assessment And Management Of Suicdality As A Single Session Intervention For Patients Admitted To Inpatient Psychiatric Care For Suicidal Thoughts And Behaviors, D Nicolas Oakey-Frost
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Inpatient psychiatric care is a critical contact point for individuals experiencing suicidal thoughts and behaviors (STB). The Zero-Suicide framework provides useful scaffolding for improving suicide prevention within inpatient psychiatry (i.e., Assess, Intervene, and Monitor [AIM-SP]). Available evidence suggests instruments are available for evidence informed risk assessment but are hindered by low construct validity and a limited collaborative approach. Additionally, extant interventions do not typically target STB and are not optimized for inpatient psychiatric care. The Collaborative Assessment and Management of Suicidality (CAMS) meets the criteria of the Zero-Suicide Framework and is often leveraged as a single session intervention (SSI) but …
Emotional Reactivity And Recognition Deficits In Individuals With Callous-Unemotional (Cu) Traits: A Multilevel Meta-Analysis, Emily C. Kemp
Emotional Reactivity And Recognition Deficits In Individuals With Callous-Unemotional (Cu) Traits: A Multilevel Meta-Analysis, Emily C. Kemp
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Youth and adults with antisocial behavior present a significant mental health concern. Elevated callous-unemotional (CU) traits, characterized by deficient empathy and remorse, distinguish clinically important subgroups of antisocial individuals who present with more severe behavior and distinct cognitive-affective characteristics that may help to explain the underlying causes of their antisocial behavior and inform more effective treatments. Specifically, two mechanisms theorized to underlie the development of elevated CU traits by way of atypical empathy development are deficient reactivity to and recognition of others’ emotions. Though a substantive literature base reports associations between CU traits and emotional processing deficits, significant inconsistencies remain. …

A Multivariate Statistical Approach For Mineral Geographic Provenance Determination Using Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy And Electron Microprobe Chemical Data: A Case Study Of Copper-Bearing Tourmalines, Barbara L. Dutrow, Nancy J. Mcmillan, Darrell J. Henry
Faculty Publications
The geographic provenance of minerals provides key insights into a range of geologic problems, including the source of gem materials. The tourmaline supergroup is unparalleled in its ability to record and preserve extensive chemical signatures of its formational environment. To evaluate the likelihood that tourmalines of similar compositions from separate geographic localities could be differentiated, a multivariate statistical approach has been utilized on two complementary data sets. These chemical analytical data sets of copper-bearing "Paraiba"tourmaline include data sets acquired with Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) and electron microprobe analysis (EMPA). Fifty-four samples of copper-bearing tourmalines from known source locations from …
Pressure And Rate Transient Analyses For Plume Characterization And Storage Capacity Estimation Of Co2 Storage Projects, Mohamed Elnoby Mokhtar Abdelaal
Pressure And Rate Transient Analyses For Plume Characterization And Storage Capacity Estimation Of Co2 Storage Projects, Mohamed Elnoby Mokhtar Abdelaal
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Reservoir characterization is a key factor for effective management of commercial-scale Geologic CO2 Storage (GCS) projects. Pressure/rate transient analyses (PTA/RTA) have evolved as reliable tools for assessing hydrocarbon and GCS reservoirs. Injection rate and pressure data are routinely measured as a part of GCS projects’ surveillance, or during transient well testing. The data contain valuable information about the subsurface that can be extracted. The extracted information enables the operator to evaluate the effectiveness of injection operations, and to make remedial/corrective interventions. In this current work, different analytical and numerical techniques are presented to characterize, assess, and maximize the economic and …
Factors Associated With Functioning In Older Black Adults, Katrail D. Davis
Factors Associated With Functioning In Older Black Adults, Katrail D. Davis
LSU Master's Theses
Activities of daily living can be simple tasks such as bathing, showering, toileting or as complex as managing finances, driving, and preparing meals. Independence in everyday functioning has been associated with successful aging and declines in functioning may be indicative of pathological cognitive decline. Social determinants of health, like economic status and access to health care, also play a role in everyday functioning. Understanding these factors are of particular importance for older Black adults who have had long-standing disparate access to care, education, and treatments. The current study aimed to evaluate social determinants of health, more specifically social engagement, as …

No Evidence For Metabolic Adaptation During Exercise-Related Energy Compensation, E. W. Flanagan, G. Sanchez-Delgado, C. K. Martin, E. Ravussin, H. Pontzer, L. M. Redman
Clinical Research Faculty Publications
The constrained energy model posits that the increased total daily energy expenditure (TDEE) in response to exercise is often less than the energy cost of the exercise prescribed. The mechanisms behind this phenomenon, coined “exercise-related energy compensation” (ExEC), are poorly understood, and it is unknown if ExEC is coupled with metabolic adaptation. Using a randomized controlled 24-week exercise intervention, individuals who demonstrated ExEC were identified. Changes to all components of TDEE and metabolic adaptation were assessed using doubly labeled water over 14 days and room calorimetry over 24-h 48% of individuals exhibited ExEC (−308 ± 158 kcals/day). There were no …

Understanding Social Impacts Of Major Disruptions From The Perspective Of Destination Access, Manika Rana Bhat
LSU Master's Theses
Major disruptions (like public health crises and extreme weather events) significantly impact human mobility and travel patterns. This study investigates the social impacts of major disruptions on human mobility from the perspective of accessing destinations. This study used a large-scale dataset from SafeGraph and focused on analyzing the impacts of COVID-19 and Hurricane Ida on destination access in Louisiana. The findings of the temporal plots indicated that the impact magnitude of Hurricane Ida was much smaller than that of the COVID-19 pandemic but still resulted in hardship on destination access. During COVID-19, it was found that parishes with limited active …
The Impact Of Social Stress And Alcohol Intoxication On Cognitive Processes Among College Students With Heavy Episodic Drinking, Caroline R. Scherzer
The Impact Of Social Stress And Alcohol Intoxication On Cognitive Processes Among College Students With Heavy Episodic Drinking, Caroline R. Scherzer
LSU Master's Theses
College students with high social anxiety and heavy episodic drinking appear to consume alcohol more frequently and at greater quantities, presumably because individuals with higher trait social anxiety may be more responsive to the stress-response dampening effects of alcohol in social contexts due to appraisal disruption and activation of implicit social cognitions. However, little work has tested this hypothesis within a controlled lab-based setting. The current study tested whether the sequence of alcohol intoxication and induction of an anticipatory social stressor interacts with trait social anxiety to predict changes in anticipatory social anxiety, craving, implicit drinking identity, and implicit self-esteem. …
Copper-Based Electrocatalysts For Electrochemical Reduction Of Co2 To C2 Products, Monsuru Olatunji Dauda
Copper-Based Electrocatalysts For Electrochemical Reduction Of Co2 To C2 Products, Monsuru Olatunji Dauda
LSU Master's Theses
The electrochemical reduction of CO2 using copper-based electrocatalysts has emerged as a promising approach for sustainable chemical production, offering a pathway to mitigate the rising atmospheric CO2 levels while generating valuable fuels and chemicals. However, the selectivity and efficiency of copper-based catalysts towards specific C2 products remain a major challenge, hindering their commercial viability. This thesis focuses on the development, characterization, and mechanistic understanding of three promising electrocatalyst systems for multi-carbon product generation from CO2 reduction: copper-phosphide (Cu-P), copper-tin (Cu-Sn), and copper selenide (Cu2Se). A comprehensive investigation of the electrocatalysts was conducted using advanced …

Consumer Behavior Analysis Approach To Teacher Choice Of Reading Interventions, Rochelle N. Picardo
Consumer Behavior Analysis Approach To Teacher Choice Of Reading Interventions, Rochelle N. Picardo
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The use of Evidence-based Practices (EBPs) in schools is heavily emphasized in educational research and policy; however, many teachers do not use EBPs for reading instruction and intervention. Previous research on the limited use of EBPs in classrooms has primarily focused on teacher characteristics, such as their attitudes or beliefs toward these practices. As an alternative to this view, this study applied a behavioral economic approach to understanding teacher choice (i.e., EBPs over other alternatives, such as interventions with a base of limited empirical support; low-value practices [LVPs]). Hypothetical Intervention Choice Tasks were developed and used to evaluate how both …

The Relationship Between Communicative And Social Deficits And Challenging Behavior In Angelman Syndrome, Cassie Chanel Feck
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Angelman Syndrome (AS) is a low-incidence neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by deficits in speech, motor, and social development as well as related differences in challenging behavior, seizures, and sleep issues. AS has a known genetic etiology and research conducted with this population has overwhelmingly focused on exploring the genetic and biological underpinnings of the disorder (e.g., applied gene therapies). At present, far less research on supporting the social, communicative, and behavioral needs of this population and how these specific deficits contribute to the individual’s overall functioning. The goals of this study were to characterize the use of Augmentative and Alternative Communication …

Extensions to general relativity allow the polarization of gravitational waves (GW) from astrophysical sources to suffer from amplitude and velocity birefringence, which respectively induce changes in the ellipticity and orientation of the polarization tensor. We introduce a multimessenger approach to test this polarization behavior of GWs during their cosmological propagation using binary sources, for which the initial polarization is determined by the inclination and orientation angles of the orbital angular momentum vector with respect to the line of sight. In particular, we use spatially resolved radio imaging of the jet from a binary neutron star (BNS) merger to constrain the …

Desire Paths In The Information Landscape, Victoria Van Hyning, Mason A. Jones, Travis Wagner
Journal of Critical Digital Librarianship
Libraries and archives serve so many different users who come to information institutions with various perspectives, needs, experiences, and desires around accessing physical or digital collections. While our users may find what they are looking for immediately, many have to beat their own paths through complex systems and metadata that doesn’t align with their needs. Their search strategies may leave digital “desire paths”–alternative routes through the information landscape that can show us how to better meet their needs. This article covers three scenarios where users’ desire paths can be seen or where gaps around user experience can be better addressed. …

Algal growth depends strongly on phosphorus (P) as a key nutrient, underscoring the significance of monitoring P levels. Algal species display a sensitive response to fluctuations in P availability, notably through the expression of alkaline phosphatase (AP) when challenged with P-depletion. As such, alkaline phosphatase activity (APA) serves as a valuable metric for P availability, offering insights into how algae utilize and fix available P resources. However, current APA quantification methods lack single cell resolution, while also being time- and reagent consuming. Microfluidics offers a promising cost-effective solution to these limitations, providing a platform for precise single-cell analysis. In this …

Examining The Relations Between Number Of Opportunities To Self-Monitor And Self-Monitoring On-Task Or Accuracy In Children, Alison Ruby
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Difficulties in academic achievement have been linked to adverse outcomes such as increased problem behavior and delays in development (Hinshaw, 1992). Early education should include training to self-monitor, as self-monitoring can improve academic performance and has a wide range of uses (Harris et al., 2005). Previous literature typically uses frequent self-monitoring opportunities ranging from every 30 seconds to 1 minute. The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of the number of self-monitoring opportunities when self-monitoring on-task behavior and self-monitoring accuracy of task completion, on-task behavior, disruptions, and accuracy of self-monitoring (types of errors) and determine the preferences …

In this study, phase transitions (structural and magnetic) and associated magnetocaloric properties of stoichiometric MnCoGe have been investigated as a function of annealing pressure. Metastable phases were generated by annealing at 800 ° C followed by rapid cooling under pressures up to 6.0 GPa. The x-ray diffraction results reveal that the crystal cell volume of the metastable phases continuously decreases with increasing thermal processing pressure, leading to a decrease in the structural transition temperature. The magnetic and structural transitions merge and form a first-order magnetostructural transition between the ferromagnetic orthorhombic and paramagnetic hexagonal phases over a broad temperature range ( …

The effect of lignocellulosic nanomaterial (LCNM) including lignin-containing cellulose nanofibers (LCNFs) and cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) on a diesel oil-in-water (O/W) emulsion was investigated with and without the emulsifier sucrose ester (SE). The O/W (65:35) emulsions were successfully stabilized by LCNFs with two lignin levels, while emulsions with CNFs exhibited large fiber flocs in the external phase only. High-lignin-content LCNFs led to a more uniform oil droplet size without formation of fiber flocs, whereas low-lignin-content LCNFs in emulsion revealed a wide size distribution of the oil droplets with intensive fiber flocs. The presence of SE significantly enhanced the stability of LCNM …

Mitochondria have diverse functions critical to whole-body metabolic homeostasis. Endurance training alters mitochondrial activity, but systematic characterization of these adaptations is lacking. Here, the Molecular Transducers of Physical Activity Consortium mapped the temporal, multi-omic changes in mitochondrial analytes across 19 tissues in male and female rats trained for 1, 2, 4, or 8 weeks. Training elicited substantial changes in the adrenal gland, brown adipose, colon, heart, and skeletal muscle. The colon showed non-linear response dynamics, whereas mitochondrial pathways were downregulated in brown adipose and adrenal tissues. Protein acetylation increased in the liver, with a shift in lipid metabolism, whereas oxidative …
A Flow-Curvature-Based Model For Channel Meandering In Tidal Marshes, Giulio Mariotti, Alvise Finotello
A Flow-Curvature-Based Model For Channel Meandering In Tidal Marshes, Giulio Mariotti, Alvise Finotello

Channel meandering is ubiquitous in tidal marshes, yet it is either omitted or weakly implemented in morphodynamic models. Here we propose a novel numerical method to simulate channel meandering in tidal marshes on a Cartesian grid. The method calculates a first-order flow by considering the balance between pressure gradient and bed friction. To account for flow momentum shift toward meander outer banks, the flow is empirically modified. Unlike previous simplified methods that relied on the curvature of the bank, this modification is based on the curvature of the flow, making the model suitable for use in dendritic channel networks. The …
