We present the first X-ray spectropolarimetric results for Cygnus X-1 in its soft state from a campaign of five IXPE observations conducted during 2023 May-June. Companion multiwavelength data during the campaign are likewise shown. The 2-8 keV X-rays exhibit a net polarization degree PD = 1.99% ± 0.13% (68% confidence). The polarization signal is found to increase with energy across the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer’s (IXPE) 2-8 keV bandpass. The polarized X-rays exhibit an energy-independent polarization angle of PA = −25.°7 ± 1.°8 east of north (68% confidence). This is consistent with being aligned to Cyg X-1’s au-scale compact radio …

Out Of Time Order Correlation Of The Hubbard Model With Random Local Disorder, Chakradhar Rangi, Juana Moreno, Ka Ming Tam Jul 2024

Out Of Time Order Correlation Of The Hubbard Model With Random Local Disorder, Chakradhar Rangi, Juana Moreno, Ka Ming Tam

Faculty Publications

The out-of-time-order correlator (OTOC) serves as a powerful tool for investigating quantum information spreading and chaos in complex systems. We present a method employing non-equilibrium dynamical mean-field theory and coherent potential approximation combined with diagrammatic perturbation on the Schwinger-Keldysh contour to calculate the OTOC for correlated fermionic systems subjected to both random disorder and electron interaction. Our key finding is that random disorder enhances the OTOC decay in the Hubbard model for the metallic phase in the weakly interacting limit. However, the current limitation of our perturbative solver restricts the applicability to weak interaction regimes.

In plant breeding, selecting cross-combinations that are more likely to result in superior lines for cultivar development is critical. This step, however, is subjective with decisions being based on available genomic and phenotypic data for prospective parents. Genomic prediction (GP) provides new opportunities to accelerate genetic gain for a target trait by identifying superior crosses through simulation of progeny performance. In this context, this study deployed GP using the phenotype and genotype of potential parents to predict the progeny genetic variance (VG) and means of overall, inferior 10%, and superior 10% (μ, μip, and μsp, respectively). This retrospective experimental design …

The performance of novel genetic combinations under untested environmental scenarios and management practices can be virtually examined using process-based crop models. Indeed, there has been a long-standing interest in the crop modeling community to expand the utility of process-based models to broader germplasm panels (e.g., breeding lines or diversity panels). Yet, there is often a misalignment between data needed to parameterize process-based crop models and data routinely collected by breeding programs. To address this gap, we leverage a dataset from a long-term trial on advanced experimental lines and released varieties from the Louisiana rice breeding program to calibrate and evaluate …

Faculty Publications

Profiling bovine blastocyst transcriptome at the single-cell level has enabled us to reveal the first cell lineage segregation, during which the inner cell mass (ICM), trophectoderm (TE), and an undefined population of transitional cells were identified. By comparing the transcriptome of blastocysts derived in vivo (IVV), in vitro from a conventional culture medium (IVC), and in vitro from an optimized reduced nutrient culture medium (IVR), we found a delay of the cell fate commitment to ICM in the IVC and IVR embryos. Developmental potential differences between IVV, IVC, and IVR embryos were mainly contributed by ICM and transitional cells. Pathway …

The southeastern United States Coastal Plain ecosystem contains baldcypress (Taxodium distichum) swamps and grass-dominated marshes. These ecosystems also occurred on the exposed continental shelf during lower sea levels but are rarely preserved due to the mechanically erosive nature of transgression and regression. Two presently marine sites on the northeastern Gulf of Mexico's continental shelf contain well-preserved woody terrestrial sediments that were the subject of previous studies. This study continues the investigation using geochemical (δ13C, δ15N, δ34S) and palynological characteristics of these formerly terrestrial sediments to determine if swamps and/or marshes existed at the time of deposition. The first site is …

In the univariate analysis, correlations between nighttime crimes and nighttime light (NTL) values detected in satellite images and between streetlight …

A Simple Approach To Dealing With Partial Contestation, Ali Kagalwala, Thiago M.Q. Moreira, Guy D. Whitten Jul 2024

A Simple Approach To Dealing With Partial Contestation, Ali Kagalwala, Thiago M.Q. Moreira, Guy D. Whitten

Faculty Publications

Objective: We propose a simple approach to dealing with partial contestation in models of multiparty elections. Methods: Our proposed approach is to add a tiny value to the vote share of parties that do not contest a district and then to include dummy variables identifying those districts in which parties do not compete. We can then estimate a single system of equations using a seemingly unrelated regression (SUR) approach and Aitchison's log-ratio transformation. In our SUR system, we interact the dummy variable for a party that partially contested districts with other predictors in the equation that uses the share of …

A (Dynamic) Investigation Of Stereotypes, Belief-Updating, And Behavior, Katherine Coffman, Maria Paola Ugalde Araya, Basit Zafar

Faculty Publications

Using a controlled experiment, we study the dynamic effects of feedback on decision-making across verbal skills and math. Before feedback, men are more optimistic about their performance and more willing to compete than women, especially in math. While feedback shifts individuals' beliefs and behavior, we see substantial persistence of gender gaps 1 week later. This is particularly true among individuals who receive negative feedback. Our results are not well-explained by motivated reasoning; in fact, negative feedback is more likely to be recalled than positive feedback. Overall, our results highlight the challenges involved in overcoming gender gaps in dynamic settings.

Presidential Stories Of Fear: Focusing Congressional Climate Change Mitigation Attention In The United States, Holly L. Peterson, Chad Zanocco Jul 2024

Presidential Stories Of Fear: Focusing Congressional Climate Change Mitigation Attention In The United States, Holly L. Peterson, Chad Zanocco

Faculty Publications

Do presidential climate change narratives increase related congressional attention in the United States? Narrative theory says since narratives leverage cognitive heuristics, they should focus policy-making attention in institutions more efficiently than non-narrative statements. This study identifies and tests climate change statements and narratives, including those focused on solutions, or “stories of hope,” and those focused on problems and victims, “stories of fear,” for relationships with congressional attention using time series analysis. Findings suggest a relationship between narrative and hearings, but not for non-narrative statements and hearings. Furthermore, while narratives are related to hearings generally, stories of fear have larger effects, …

Faculty Publications

The Eridania Basin system, located in the martian southern highlands, may have hosted long-lived lacustrine hydrothermalism. Despite its multi-basin scale and suggested longevity that should pervasively alter the landscape, evidence for consistent compositional signatures of lacustrine hydrothermalism across varying spatial scales is poorly known. Here we synthesize orbital data sets (derived from the Gamma Ray Spectrometer, GRS; Thermal Emission Spectrometer, TES; and Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer for Mars, CRISM) to characterize the composition of Eridania's landscape from regional to outcrop scales. The bulk geochemistry representing decimeter depths is broadly on par with mafic igneous compositions seen elsewhere on Mars. The …

A Review Of The Rheological Consistency Of Materials, Alan Gurt, Michael Khonsari

Faculty Publications

Despite the ubiquity and prevalence of rheological consistency across a wide range of industries, there is no clear consensus on its meaning or on one particular technique for quantifying it. Instead, there exist various definitions of “consistency” that are each specific to a given context, and each industry has its own procedure for measuring it. This paper organizes the many subjects and terminologies associated with consistency, providing a comprehensive guide of fundamental mechanics, fundamental properties, modeling techniques, and standardized tests that describe consistency. This includes outlining the rheological models that describe the behavior of viscoelastic and non-Newtonian materials as well …

Recent research suggests that one-fifth of United States households use non-English languages in the home setting. Ethically and effectively supporting culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) clients (e.g., autistic individuals) presents a growing challenge to practitioners of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). Though efforts to address the linguistic needs of the population have grown in recent years, current literature focuses on language selection for monolingual services and underemphasizes the need for bilingual service provision. Studies were conducted to (I) evaluate the efficacy of bilingual picture exchange (i.e., mand response) across items, speakers, and languages (i.e., English and Spanish) as well as (II) …

The Effect Of Season On Neuroendocrine Interactions In The Mare, Victoria N. Bailey Jul 2024

The Effect Of Season On Neuroendocrine Interactions In The Mare, Victoria N. Bailey

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Reproductive seasonality in the mare involves various neuroendocrine modulations, and a series of experiments were conducted to investigate the anatomical and physiological roles of some of these seasonal modulators. The first experiment incorporated kisspeptin-10 (Kp10) into a treatment with estradiol benzoate (EB) and sulpiride, aiming to induce early cyclicity in seasonally anovulatory mares. Incorporation of Kp10 resulted in more mares ovulating earlier compared to mares receiving EB-sulpiride. Although plasma prolactin increased in both groups, concentrations were notably higher in Kp10-treated mares. Therefore, the subsequent experiment explored the anatomical interaction of kisspeptin and prolactin, aiming to determine whether kisspeptin may regulate …

Declined memory is a hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Experiments in rodents and human postmortem studies suggest that serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) plays a role in memory, but the underlying mechanisms are unknown. Here, we investigate the role of 5-HT 2C receptor (5-HT2CR) in regulating memory. Transgenic mice expressing a humanized HTR2C mutation exhibit impaired plasticity of hippocampal ventral CA1 (vCA1) neurons and reduced memory. Further, 5-HT neurons project to and synapse onto vCA1 neurons. Disruption of 5-HT synthesis in vCA1-projecting neurons or deletion of 5-HT2CRs in the vCA1 impairs neural plasticity and memory. We show that a selective 5-HT2CR agonist, …
