© 2018 Florida Entomological Society. All rights reserved. Brazilian peppertree, Schinus terebinthifolia Raddi (Anacardaceae), native to Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay, is one of the most invasive weeds in Florida. In its native range, at least 4 psyllid species of the genus Calophya (Hemiptera: Calophyidae) are associated with it. All 4 species are monophagous and constitute a likely monophyletic group that induce pit galls, usually on the upper leaf surface. Here we revise the taxonomy of these species, 2 of which are described as new, viz. C. lutea sp. nov. and C. praestigiator sp. nov. Morphological differences between the 4 …

The Montevideo Interpretation Of Quantum Mechanics: A Short Review, Rodolfo Gambini, Jorge Pullin
Faculty Publications
The Montevideo interpretation of quantum mechanics, which consists of supplementing environmental decoherence with fundamental limitations in measurement stemming from gravity, has been described in several publications. However, some of them appeared before the full picture provided by the interpretation was developed. As such, it can be difficult to get a good understanding via the published literature. Here, we summarize it in a self-contained brief presentation including all its principal elements.

Hyper-Kamiokande consists of two identical water-Cherenkov detectors of total 520 kt, with the first one in Japan at 295 km from the J-PARC neutrino beam with 2.5° off-axis angles (OAAs), and the second one possibly in Korea at a later stage. Having the second detector in Korea would benefit almost all areas of neutrino oscillation physics, mainly due to longer baselines. There are several candidate sites in Korea with baselines of 1000-1300 km and OAAs of 1°-3°. We conducted sensitivity studies on neutrino oscillation physics for a second detector, either in Japan (JD × 2) or Korea (JD + KD), …

© 2018 American Society of Plant Biologists. All rights reserved. Endopolyploidy occurs when DNA replication takes place without subsequent mitotic nuclear division, resulting in cell-specific ploidy levels within tissues. In plants, endopolyploidy plays an important role in sustaining growth and development, but only a few studies have demonstrated a role in abiotic stress response. In this study, we investigated the function of ploidy level and nuclear and cell size in leaf expansion throughout development and tracked cell type-specific ploidy in the halophyte Mesembryanthemum crystallinum. In addition to developmental endopolyploidy, we examined the effects of salinity stress on ploidy level. We …

Development of resistant cultivars is the main control measure against sugarcane brown rust caused by Puccinia melanocephala. Durability is uncertain, since the pathogen possesses adaptive ability to overcome host plant resistance. A differential gene expression study utilizing suppressive subtraction hybridization was conducted to identify brown rust responsive genes in sugarcane. The expression patterns of 11 out of 217 unigenes of the subtractive library representing biosynthetic pathways, defense-related genes, and signaling genes were analyzed in L 99-233, a cultivar exhibiting quantitative resistance, L 01-299, a resistant cultivar with the major resistance gene Bru1, and two susceptible cultivars, Ho 95-988 and L …

The estimation of capacity as a parameter to assess traffic flow performance on freeway facilities has received considerable attention in the literature. Despite the general acceptance of the stochastic notion of capacity, limited research has been conducted on how to select a single representative design value from a capacity distribution function. This paper reports the results of an empirical comparison between conventional capacity estimates and those obtained by maximizing the sustained flow index (SFI) for 19 U.S. freeway sections. The SFI is defined as the product of the traffic volume and the probability of survival at this volume. The capacity …

The oriental fruit fly, Bactrocera dorsalis Hendel (Diptera: Tephritidae), is a generalist feeder that is known to successfully feed and breed on a variety of fruits and vegetables in the tropical and subtropical zones of Asia. Recently, the northward extension of B. dorsalis has been reported, and this geographic range increase relates to both climate changes and the rapid development of domestic and international trade and travel. However, it has not been possible to determine the origin of this pest, which is trapped in north China. In this study, traps baited with the sex attractant methyl eugenol were used to …

Reflection Negative Kernels And Fractional Brownian Motion, Palle E.T. Jorgensen, Karl Hermann Neeb, Gestur Ólafsson
Faculty Publications
In this article we study the connection of fractional Brownian motion, representation theory and reflection positivity in quantum physics. We introduce and study reflection positivity for affine isometric actions of a Lie group on a Hilbert space ε and show in particular that fractional Brownian motion for Hurst index 0 < H ≤ 1/2 is reflection positive and leads via reflection positivity to an infinite dimensional Hilbert space if 0 < H < 1/2. We also study projective invariance of fractional Brownian motion and relate this to the complementary series representations of GL2(ℝ). We relate this to a measure preserving action on a Gaussian L2-Hilbert space L2(ε).

A Theory Of Minimal K-Types For Flat G-Bundles, Christopher L. Bremer, Daniel S. Sage

The theory of minimal K-types for p-adic reductive groups was developed in part to classify irreducible admissible representations with wild ramification. An important observation was that minimal K-types associated to such representations correspond to fundamental strata. These latter objects are triples (x, r, β), where x is a point in the Bruhat-Tits building of the reductive group G, r is a nonnegative real number, and β is a semistable functional on the degree r associated graded piece of the Moy-Prasad filtration corresponding to x. Recent work on the wild ramification case of the geometric Langlands conjectures suggests that fundamental strata …

Stability And Robustness Analysis For A Multispecies Chemostat Model With Delays In The Growth Rates And Uncertainties, Frederic Mazenc, Gonzalo Robledo, Michael Malisoff
Faculty Publications
We study a chemostat model with an arbitrary number of competing species, one substrate, and constant dilution rates. We allow delays in the growth rates and additive uncertainties. Using constant inputs of certain species, we derive bounds on the sizes of the delays that ensure asymptotic stability of an equilibrium when the uncertainties are zero, which can allow persistence of multiple species. Under delays and uncertainties, we provide bounds on the delays and on the uncertainties that ensure input-to-state stability with respect to uncertainties.

Bounding The Energy-Constrained Quantum And Private Capacities Of Phase-Insensitive Bosonic Gaussian Channels, Kunal Sharma, Mark M. Wilde, Sushovit Adhikari, Masahiro Takeoka
Faculty Publications
We establish several upper bounds on the energy-constrained quantum and private capacities of all single-mode phase-insensitive bosonic Gaussian channels. The first upper bound, which we call the 'data-processing bound,' is the simplest and is obtained by decomposing a phase-insensitive channel as a pure-loss channel followed by a quantum-limited amplifier channel. We prove that the data-processing bound can be at most 1.45 bits larger than a known lower bound on these capacities of the phase-insensitive Gaussian channel. We discuss another data-processing upper bound as well. Two other upper bounds, which we call the 'ϵ-degradable bound' and the 'ϵ-close-degradable bound,' are established …

Purpose: In this reply, we respond to comments on our article “Tracking the Growth of Tense and Agreement in Children With Specific Language Impairment: Differences Between Measures of Accuracy, Diversity, and Productivity.” Conclusion: The finite verb morphology composite can be disproportionately affected by frequently occurring grammatical forms produced through direct activation. This assumption was one of the reasons we wished to compare this measure to the tense marker total and the tense/agreement productivity score. The latter two measures provide valuable developmental information that is not available from the finite morphology composite. Yet, the finite verb morphology composite shows good diagnostic …

Sperm cryopreservation is a highly efficient method for preserving genetic resources. It extends the reproductive period of males and significantly reduces costs normally associated with maintenance of live animal colonies. However, previous zebrafish (Danio rerio) cryopreservation methods have produced variable outcomes and low post-thaw fertilization rates. To improve post-thaw fertilization rates after cryopreservation, we developed a new extender and cryoprotective medium (CPM), introduced quality assessment (QA), determined the optimal cooling rate, and improved the post-thaw in vitro fertilization process. We found that the hypertonic extender E400 preserved motility of sperm held on ice for at least 6 h. We implemented …

Cryopreservation Of Sperm Bundles (Spermatozeugmata) From Endangered Livebearing Goodeids, Yue Liu, Leticia Torres, Terrence R. Tiersch
Faculty Publications
More than half of fishes in the family Goodeidae are considered to be endangered, threatened, or vulnerable. Sperm cryopreservation is an effective tool for conserving genetic resources of imperiled populations, but development of protocols with livebearing fishes faces numerous challenges including the natural packaging of sperm into bundles. In this study the cryopreservation of sperm bundles (spermatozeugmata) of three goodeids species was evaluated. Sperm quality was evaluated by activation with NaCl-NaOH solution (at 300 mOsmol/kg and pH 11.8), and analysis of dissociable bundles and dissociation duration. Using Redtail Splitfin (Xenotoca eiseni) as a model, the effects of cryoprotectants (dimethyl sulfoxide, …

The management of wintering North American waterfowl is based on the premise that the amount of foraging habitat can limit populations. To estimate carrying capacity of winter habitats, managers use bioenergetic models to quantify energy (food) availability and energy demand, and use results as planning tools to meet regional conservation objectives. Regional models provide only coarse estimates of carrying capacity because habitat area, habitat energy values, and temporal trends in population-level demand are difficult to quantify precisely at large scales. We took advantage of detailed data previously collected on wintering waterfowl at Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge and surrounding …

The article examines Prokofiev's compositional oeuvre through the lens of the Rimsky- Korsakov scale (octatonic collection) and its prominence in selected works from 1915 through 1941. Although he never took a composition lesson with Rimsky-Korsakov, Prokofiev's careful use of the collection shows his intimate knowledge of the scale. The article seeks to add a understanding of the development of the Rimsky-Korsakov scale within Russian theoretical thought. A survey of short octatonic sections culminates in the analysis of Sonata no. 6, which not only uses the same octatonic collection to characterize the themes of first and last movements, but also features …

We present a model and discretization that couples the Ericksen model of liquid crystals with variable degree of orientation to the Allen–Cahn equations with a mass constraint. The coupled system models liquid crystal droplets with anisotropic surface tension effects due to the liquid crystal molecular alignment. The total energy consists of the Ericksen energy, phase-field (Allen–Cahn) energy, and a weak anchoring energy that couples the liquid crystal to the diffuse interface. We describe our discretization of the total energy along with a method to compute minimizers via a discrete gradient flow algorithm which has a strictly monotone energy decreasing property. …

In this paper, secure transmission in a heterogeneous network in the presence of multiple eavesdroppers is studied. A game-theoretic framework is proposed to enhance the security of the macro base station (MBS), while guaranteeing user satisfaction of the small base stations (SBSs) by exploiting the cooperation and competition among the entire network. Specifically, a two-level Stackelberg game is formulated, where the MBS employs a set of competing jamming SBSs to jam the eavesdroppers at the top level, and each employed jamming SBS may require offloading service from multiple competing helping SBSs in its cluster at the bottom level if needed. …

Construction Of A Tropical Cyclone Size Dataset Using Retroactive Analysis Data With A Damage Application, Derek Trent Thompson
LSU Master's Theses
This thesis introduces a new tropical cyclone (TC) size dataset. Using the radius of the outermost closed isobar (ROCI) as the size metric of focus, a comprehensive record of TC size at landfall was constructed for tropical storms and hurricanes that made landfall in the United States along the East Coast and in the Gulf of Mexico. The ROCI information was derived from mean sea level pressure maps generated using the NCEP/NCAR Reanalysis I dataset over a 69-year period (1948 – 2016). Construction of the dataset involved using two methodologies, one based on hourly interpolated HURDAT2 best tracks and the …

Home Is, Jodie Masterman
LSU Master's Theses
As an exploration of family and personal history, Home is. aims not only to chronicle my own experiences and memories, but to touch upon the innumerable definitions of the word “home”. The objects are rooted in personal reflection, but each one refers to an aspect of play, identity, love, loss, or regret, inherent within any family. Although they do serve as a blueprint of my life, they are meant to stand as moments shared by all.

A Performer’S Guide To Poema De Sete Faces, Song Cycle By Jeffrey Perry, Paulo Henrique Campos Silva
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The American composer Jeffrey Perry composed the song cycle Poema de sete faces (Poem of seven faces), for tenor or soprano and piano, based on the poem of the same name by Carlos Drummond de Andrade, one of the greatest Brazilian modernist poets of the 20th century. Both Drummond’s poem and Perry’s music were written to be open to multiple interpretations. Together, the possibilities for their interpretation are even broader. This dissertation discusses the art that emerges at the intersection of the poem and the music from the perspective of the singer. I present a biography and an overview of …
