Dearest, Grace Tessein
Dearest, Grace Tessein
LSU Master's Theses
Dearest is the examination of what remains of a person, looking to the objects they cherished most while contemplating the inevitability of their certain absence. The work questions the futility of preservation in the measure of time, the failure of memories held in fragile containers, and the decay of the physical body. The materials that compose Dearest are chosen for their innate longevity and their ability to evoke remembrance.

As global ocean change progresses, reef-building corals and their early life history stages will rely on physiological plasticity to tolerate new environmental conditions. Larvae from brooding coral species contain algal symbionts upon release, which assist with the energy requirements of dispersal and metamorphosis. Global ocean change threatens the success of larval dispersal and settlement by challenging the performance of the larvae and of the symbiosis. In this study, larvae of the reef-building coral Pocillopora damicornis were exposed to elevated pCO2 and temperature to examine the performance of the coral and its …

© 2018 by the authors. We use the 2013 cotton precision farming survey data to study the adoption of irrigation technologies by cotton farmers in 14 states of the United States. We find that farmers with a higher irrigated yield, and who are from the Southern Plains (Texas and Oklahoma), adopt water-efficient irrigation technologies, such as sub-surface drip and trickle irrigation technologies. There are 10 irrigation technologies that farmers can adopt for cotton production in these 14 cotton-growing states. The intensity of the irrigation technologies, as measured by the number of irrigation technologies adopted in cotton production, is affected by …
Bending Gender In French Literature, Jacey Flatte
Bending Gender In French Literature, Jacey Flatte
LSU Master's Theses
This paper looks at French literature that defies binary and heteronormative gender roles and identities. The literature spans from the seventeenth- to the nineteenth-century. My goal is not only to bring these pieces of literature to light, proving that non-binary genders have existed long before the recent liberal LGBTQIA+ movement, but also to help modernize these identities from the past. In doing this, I aim to explain that contemporary gender identities are not new, but timeless. The experiences seen in this literature are strikingly similar to how people experience gender today. As a result, I hope that readers will be …
The Body In Pain / The Body In Ecstasy, Shannon Kenny
The Body In Pain / The Body In Ecstasy, Shannon Kenny
LSU Master's Theses
The Body in Pain / The Body in Ecstasy is a series of short lyric essays/extended poems which catalogue major discriminatory movements against disabled people in the 20th and 21st century, specifically in the United States. My work contains duel storylines, using these movements/categories of violence as frames for my own personal narrative, and connecting individual experience to larger historical structures. I do this to disrupt the notion that history is disconnected from the present, and showcase how humans are built by context, where personal and political are inexorably intertwined, and social development is tied to both the body and …
Evaluating The Predictive Validity Of The Implementation Beliefs Assessment On Classwide Management Components, Sarah Alexa Metallo
Evaluating The Predictive Validity Of The Implementation Beliefs Assessment On Classwide Management Components, Sarah Alexa Metallo
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Given the broad framework of the Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports model, its barriers to adaptability and implementation in schools have affected an increased emphasis on exploration and measurement of treatment integrity. A tool directly linked with a model of treatment integrity is the Implementation Beliefs Assessment (IBA; Sanetti, Long, Neugebaur, & Kratochwill, 2012). The IBA has preliminary evidence indicating it is a psychometrically sound measure; however, since it is a measure related to behavior change, assessing its predictive validity of treatment integrity is a useful indicator of this tool’s value during the consultation process. The current study utilized multiple …
Generating Audio Using Recurrent Neural Networks, Andrew Pfalz
Generating Audio Using Recurrent Neural Networks, Andrew Pfalz
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Long Short Term Memory cells are a type of recurrent neural network that perform well when predicting sequence data. This works presents four approaches to modeling audio data. The models are trained to predict either raw audio samples or magnitude spectrum windows based on prior input audio. In a process called sampling, the models can then be employed to generate new audio using what they learned about the data they were trained on.
Four methods for sampling are presented. The first has the model predict a vector for each vector in the input. The second has the model predict one …
Experimental Evaluation Of Lignocellulosic Biomass Pyrolysis By Dielectric Heating And Thermocatalytic Upgrading Of Pyrolysis Vapors Via Iron-Doped Montmorillonite Clay Catalyst, Candice Raffaela Ellison
Experimental Evaluation Of Lignocellulosic Biomass Pyrolysis By Dielectric Heating And Thermocatalytic Upgrading Of Pyrolysis Vapors Via Iron-Doped Montmorillonite Clay Catalyst, Candice Raffaela Ellison
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This work is an investigation of microwave-assisted biomass pyrolysis and thermocatalytic upgrading of pyrolysis vapors. In the first two chapters, the microwave susceptibility of mixtures of biomass with potential microwave absorbers are characterized by dielectric measurements at microwave frequencies. Dielectric constant and dielectric loss factor of biomass mixtures with char and biomass mixtures with bentonite are found to increase quadratically with increasing weight percent of char or bentonite.
Chapter 3 presents a finite element model, developed in COMSOL Multiphysics, comparing two waveguide applicator configurations for microwave processing using biomass as a model material. A standing wave configuration results in intense …
Understanding “Southern” Identities And Confederate Iconography: Internal Orientalism, (Mis)Representation, And Social Media, Robert W. Perham
Understanding “Southern” Identities And Confederate Iconography: Internal Orientalism, (Mis)Representation, And Social Media, Robert W. Perham
LSU Master's Theses
In light of recent debates surrounding Confederate iconography (flags, statues and symbols), this thesis has three foci. First, the continued construction of the American “South” as an internal “Other.” Second, the reactive perspectives taken by self-identifying “Southerners” who both support and denounce Confederate iconography. Third, the role that social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter and Instagram) have as sites that both disseminate hegemonic discourse and facilitate resistance. Drawing on a Foucauldian discourse analysis of content (news articles, posts, videos, images, memes) published and discussed on social media, I explore whether "the South" continues to be portrayed as a lesser "Other" nationally, …
A Novel Multiproxy Approach To Reconstructing Sea Surface Temperature In The Southwestern Gulf Of Mexico, Marissa Anne Vara
A Novel Multiproxy Approach To Reconstructing Sea Surface Temperature In The Southwestern Gulf Of Mexico, Marissa Anne Vara
LSU Master's Theses
Coral Sr/Ca is a widely-used proxy for sea surface temperature (SST); however, discrepancies in the coral Sr/Ca-SST relationship among colonies of the same species makes uncertainty in absolute temperature reconstructions larger than the climate signal yet climate variability studies are possible. Furthermore, the riverine input of terrestrial carbonate weathering products to the coastal waters can disrupt the coral Sr/Ca-SST signal by changing local seawater chemistry. This study evaluates the fidelity and reproducibly of coral SST proxies (Sr/Ca, Li/Ca, Mg/Li, Sr-U, Mg/Ca, and U/Ca) and a riverine-upwelling proxy (Ba/Ca) in four Orbicella faveolata colonies in two reefs offshore from Veracruz, Mexico …
Risk Assessment Of Concrete Gravity Dams Under Earthquake Loads, Ufuk Sen
Risk Assessment Of Concrete Gravity Dams Under Earthquake Loads, Ufuk Sen
LSU Master's Theses
Dams are important structures to supply water for irrigation or drinking, to control flood, and to generate electricity. In seismic regions, the structural safety of concrete gravity dams is important due to the high potential of life and economic loss if they fail. Therefore, the seismic analysis of existing dams in seismically active regions is very crucial to predict responses of dams to ground motions. In this thesis, earthquake response of concrete gravity dams is investigated using the finite element (FE) method. The selected dam is the Pine Flat Dam which is located in the Central Valley of Fresno County, …
Risk, Responsibility, And Ethics In Professional And Technical Communication, Charley Grant Silvio
Risk, Responsibility, And Ethics In Professional And Technical Communication, Charley Grant Silvio
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
In this project, I present a novel and alternative approach for considering ethics in professional and technical communication, namely the ethics of responsibility theorized primarily by phenomenologist Emmanuel Levinas. To apply this new approach, I investigate a contemporary example in the rhetoric of investment bank Goldman Sachs before and during the 2008 U.S. Financial Crisis. In the early chapters, I review conventional ethical approaches—traditional and postmodern—in technical and professional communication (TPC) and consider their application to the Goldman Sachs example. This analysis reveals that these approaches, while useful in understanding the report’s general ethical framework, don’t fully describe the ethical …

© 2018 Author(s). The performance of fuel cells depends largely on the proton diffusion in the proton conducting membrane, the core of a fuel cell. High temperature polymer electrolyte fuel cells are based on a polymer membrane swollen with phosphoric acid as the electrolyte, where proton conduction takes place. We studied the proton diffusion in such membranes with neutron scattering techniques which are especially sensitive to the proton contribution. Time of flight spectroscopy and backscattering spectroscopy have been combined to cover a broad dynamic range. In order to selectively observe the diffusion of protons potentially contributing to the ion conductivity, …

The critical behaviors of polycrystalline Ni2MnGa and Ni2Mn0.85Cu0.15Ga have been examined through high-resolution bulk magnetization measurements. The critical exponents, β and γ, were derived from modified Arrott plots using the Kouvel-Fisher method. The values of the extracted critical exponents satisfied the scaling equation of state and associated exponent relations, indicating self-consistency of the extracted values. In Ni2MnGa, the critical exponents (β = 0.401 ± 0.003, γ = 1.27 ± 0.02) indicate a deviation from the 3D-Heisenberg values toward the mean-field values, likely due to the presence of long-range Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida interactions. However, the critical exponents of Ni2Mn0.85Cu0.15Ga (β = 0.389 ± …

The sterile insect technique (SIT) has been used for the control or eradication of target insect pests. To successfully apply SIT, it is very important to clarify the effect of irradiation on male reproduction in the target pest, because their mating and spermiogenesis abilities affect the success of eradication program. The sweetpotato weevil, Cylas formicarius (Fabricius) (Coleoptera: Brentidae) is a notorious and worldwide pest of sweet potato. We investigated the effect of irradiation at five doses ranging from 0 (control) to 150 Gy on 9-d-old males. Survival rate of the control (no treatment) remained high from day 10 to 20 …

A cluster of previously buried Taxodium distichum stumps are exposed and preserved in growth position at the bottom of a trough on the inner Gulf of Mexico (GOM) continental shelf in 18 m water depth and 13 km offshore Orange Beach, AL. Radiocarbon ages from wood and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating of sediments suggest a Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 3 age, or older. This study builds on the previous work of Gonzalez (2018) and Obeclz (2017). Five biofacies were identified in vibracore collected in 2015 and 2016: 1) the Holocene Mississippi-Alabama-Florida (MAFLA) sand sheet, 2) a Holocene interbedded sand …
Two-Phase Flow Regime Map For Large Diameter Pipes And High-Velocity Flows, Matheus Sigaki Capovilla
Two-Phase Flow Regime Map For Large Diameter Pipes And High-Velocity Flows, Matheus Sigaki Capovilla
LSU Master's Theses
Worst-case-discharge (WCD) calculations are a pre-requisite for any new well to be drilled in the Gulf of Mexico (GoM). Models that were mostly developed for production rates prediction are currently used to calculate the WCD rate. These models were mostly developed for pipe diameters and flow velocities much smaller than those expected during WCD events. Therefore, these models may be miscalculating WCD rates.
This study aims at analyzing one of possible sources of errors in these models: the flow regime maps. The influence of diameter change on flow regimes is discussed. A thorough literature review is carried out for different …
The Fabrication Of High-Aspect Ratio Gratings For Talbot Interferometer With Medical Imaging Application., Vikaram Singh
The Fabrication Of High-Aspect Ratio Gratings For Talbot Interferometer With Medical Imaging Application., Vikaram Singh
LSU Master's Theses
X-ray Phase contrast-based Talbot interferometer creates high contrast between weak and strong absorbing materials, which makes it effective in imaging soft tissues. However, its performance is bounded by the aspect-ratio, features and symmetry of its gratings. For 40 KeV energy X-rays, the analyzer grating thickness should be 100 µm or more to achieve > 90% absorption in order to obtain high contrast images. Moreover, the smaller period in grating is desired for higher resolution. Therefore, researchers are exploring various fabrication techniques to achieve greater aspect-ratio gratings. Utilizing modern LIGA techniques, the aspect-ratio of gratings can be improved with a simplified …

Predictive Data-Based Multi-Hazard Hurricane Fragility Models For Single Family Homes, Carol Constantin Massarra
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Recently, data-based fragility models have been implemented to explain multi-hazard hurricane building fragility. However, deficiencies in current fragility models exist. Typically, categorical dependent variables are modeled as continuous numerical variables, which may result in inefficient standard errors for estimated coefficients and the models may result in probabilities greater than one or less than zero. Additionally, published models are limited to inference and interpretation of main variable coefficients without consideration of interaction terms between the variables and do not consider evaluation of model performance.
This dissertation addresses these deficiencies in the development of predictive data-based fragility models for multinomial categorical damage …

© 2018 The Authors. The evolutionary relationships among the apicomplexan blood pathogens known as the malaria parasites (order Haemosporida), some of which infect nearly 200 million humans each year, has remained a vexing phylogenetic problem due to limitations in taxon sampling, character sampling and the extreme nucleotide base composition biases that are characteristic of this clade. Previous phylogenetic work on the malaria parasites has often lacked sufficient representation of the broad taxonomic diversity within the Haemosporida or the multi-locus sequence data needed to resolve deep evolutionary relationships, rendering our understanding of haemosporidian lifehistory evolution and the origin of the human …

The plant cell wall is known to be the first barrier against plant pathogens. Detailed information about sugarcane cell wall-associated defense responses to infection by the causal agent of smut, Sporisorium scitamineum, is scarce. Herein, (immuno)histochemical analysis of two smut resistant and two susceptible sugarcane cultivars was conducted to understand host cell wall structural and compositional modifications in response to fungal infection. Results showed that the fungus grew on the surface and infected the outermost bud scale of both susceptible and resistant cultivars. The present findings also supported the existence of early (24 h after inoculation) and later (72-96 h …

As an increasing number of American families cope with chronic financial stability, they have withdrawn from traditional financial systems and instead have chosen to participate in the fringe economy where alternative financial services (AFS) and products are costly. Although individuals’ lives have become highly financialized, the issue of financial inclusion is not well understood. Research to date primarily has focused on the banked and unbanked group, yet, evidence indicates the presence of a sizeable group of people who are underbanked. Using a posttest-only, nonequivalent control group quasi-experimental design, this dissertation study investigated banking statuses (unbanked, underbanked, and banked), and AFS …

Chopin’s twenty-seven piano études display the composer’s poetic musical language, uniting keyboard techniques, virtuosity, and artistic imagery, while preserving Romantic lyricism and songfulness. Each of these studies is unique in its set of pianistic challenges, compositional processes, and difficulty level. Schenkerian analysis provides an interpretation of relationships between the notes that constitute the harmony and the melody. This type of analysis allows one to understand the theoretical aspects that are necessary to play Chopin’s études. The Schenkerian theories can be used to amalgamate pianism and performance with harmony and analysis. Furthermore, the Schenkerian understanding of these études provides an analytical …
