Particulate matter (PM) is emitted during the combustion of fuels and wastes. PM exposure exacerbates pulmonary diseases, and the mechanism may involve oxidative stress. At lower combustion temperatures such as occurs in the cool zone of a flame, aromatic compounds chemisorb to the surface of metal-oxide-containing PM, resulting in the formation of surface-stabilized environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFR). Prior studies showed …

The data processing inequality states that the quantum relative entropy between two states ρ and σ can never increase by applying the same quantum channel N to both states. This inequality can be strengthened with a remainder term in the form of a distance between ρ and the closest recovered state (R∘ N) (ρ) , where R is a recovery map with the property that σ= (R∘ N) (σ). We show the existence of an explicit recovery map that is universal in the sense that it depends only on σ and the quantum channel N to be reversed. This result …

As-solidified Ni48Co2Mn35In15 ribbons were prepared through the melt-spinning method, and their structural, magnetic, magnetocaloric properties, and martensitic transformations were investigated. The inverse martensitic transformation temperature (TA=325 K) for the melt spun ribbons shifted by 55 K to higher temperature relative to that of the bulk material (TA = 270 K). The working temperature range of the magnetic entropy change (ΔSM) in Ni48Co2Mn35In15 ribbons has been significantly expanded relative to that of bulk. The roles of the magnetostructural transitions on the magneto-responsive properties of the ribbons are discussed.

The study of extended, cold dust envelopes surrounding R Coronae Borealis (RCB) stars began with their discovery by the Infrared Astronomical Satellite. RCB stars are carbon-rich supergiants characterized by their extreme hydrogen deficiency and their irregular and spectacular declines in brightness (up to 9 mag). We have analyzed new and archival Spitzer Space Telescope and Herschel Space Observatory data of the envelopes of seven RCB stars to examine the morphology and investigate the origin of these dusty shells. Herschel, in particular, has revealed the first-ever bow shock associated with an RCB star with its observations of SU Tauri. These data …

© 2018 Elsevier B.V. The use of quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) sensor arrays for analyses of volatile organic compounds (VOC) has attracted significant interest in recent years. In this regard, a group of uniformed materials based on organic salts (GUMBOS) has proven to be promising recognition elements in QCM based sensor arrays due to diverse properties afforded by this class of tunable materials. Herein, we examine the application of four novel phthalocyanine based GUMBOS as recognition elements for VOC sensing using a QCM based multisensor array (MSA). These synthesized GUMBOS are composed of copper (II) phthalocyaninetetrasulfonate (CuPcS4) anions coupled with …

© 2018 Elsevier B.V. The evolution and resulting morphology of a Cretaceous contourite drift in the eastern Central Atlantic oceanic basin is investigated in unprecedented detail using seismic imaging and age-calibrated cross-margin sections. The margin, from the shelf, slope to deep-water and abyssal plain is constructed by a succession of erosive and depositional mounded structures that relate to bottom-water currents and sediment winnowing. The regional mapping of these drifts, sediment waves and gravitational sedimentary systems allows us to test the Upper Cretaceous paleocirculation model. Combined with flexural backstripping of the regional cross section, it reveals the water-depth range at which …

© 2018 Botanical Society of America Premise of the Study: Community phylogenetic methods incorporate information on evolutionary relationships into studies of organismal assemblages. We used a community phylogenetic framework to investigate relationships and biogeographic affinities and to calculate phylogenetic signal of endemism and invasiveness for the flora of the pine rocklands—a globally critically imperiled ecosystem with a significant portion of its distribution in South Florida, United States. Methods: We reconstructed phylogenetic relationships of 538 vascular plant taxa, which represent 92.28% of the vascular flora of the pine rocklands. We estimated phylogenetic signal for endemism and invasiveness using phylogenetic generalized linear …

© 2018, Springer Nature Switzerland AG. Aims: Tropical tree and lianas in the understory are limited by soil nutrients despite growing in extremely low light. It is not known if nomadic vines are also limited by nutrients in low light conditions. Methods: We measured differences in root architecture and mycorrhizal colonization, and leaf nutrients of a nomadic vine, Philodendron fragrantissimum (Araceae), in nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) fertilization plots in a lowland tropical moist forest in central Panama to measure potential nutrient limitation. Results: Relative to plants in control plots, leaf P concentration was 54% higher and leaf N concentration …

An engineered phiC31 "Disintegrase" able to make an attP site in Drosophila out of an attRattL pair is described. This was used to generate attP sites at genomic locations where a mini-white (mini-w) transgene was subject to chromosomal position effects (CPE). The first step was random genomic integration of a P-element-based transposon with an insulated mini-w transgene. We then removed the …

This is an open access article distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License, which permits unrestricted use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original author and source are credited. How one allele interacts with the other for the function of a gene is not well understood. In this study, we tested potential allelic interaction at the Peg3 imprinted locus with several mutant alleles targeting an Imprinting Control Region, the Peg3-DMR. According to the results, maternal deletion of the Peg3-DMR resulted in 2-fold up-regulation of two paternally expressed genes, Peg3 and Usp29. …

Prediction And Rehabilitation Of Highway Embankment Slope Failures In Changing Climate, Navid Jafari, Anand Puppala
Prediction And Rehabilitation Of Highway Embankment Slope Failures In Changing Climate, Navid Jafari, Anand Puppala

Highway slopes constructed with clayey soil are prone to desiccation cracks due to wetting and drying weather cycle, which allows greater moisture infiltration into the embankment from precipitation. Fissures formed due to extended wetting and drying cycles allow water to seep deeper into the soil than surficial wetting and increase the water content. This increases the moisture content in the soil and results in reduction in shear strength to the fully softened strength. On the other hand, development of desiccation cracks and reduction of the soil matric suction ultimately result in higher hydraulic conductivity value which causes development of higher …
Impacts Of Moisture On Asphalt Properties, Zahid Hossain
Impacts Of Moisture On Asphalt Properties, Zahid Hossain
Publications
Stripping related moisture damage has been recognized as one of the major pavement distresses since the early 1990s. The main objective of this study is to establish an effective test protocol to quantify moisture susceptibility of asphalt pavements. To this end, selective test methods (Texas Boiling test, Tensile Strength Ratio, Retained Stability, and Hamburg Wheel Test), and procedures based on surface chemistries and molecular-level mechanistic properties have been investigated in this study. Firstly, a comprehensive list of literature related to moisture damage in asphalts was reviewed. Based on the literature review, a detailed project plan and test matrix were developed. …

© Copyright by the World Aquaculture Society 2018 Although aquatic species cryopreservation protocols have been studied around the world over the past 60 yr., germplasm repository development efforts and commercialization have begun only recently. The goal of this project was to develop a self-contained mobile laboratory for on-site high-throughput cryopreservation of aquatic species. The objectives of this study were to: (1) identify how a mobile laboratory would function in different operational scenarios, (2) customize an enclosed cargo trailer to function as a mobile laboratory, (3) evaluate the laboratory layout and ability of cryopreservation equipment to operate from generator power, and …

In this paper we prove equivalences of categories relating the derived category of a block of the category of representations of a connected reductive algebraic group over an algebraically closed field of characteristic p bigger than the Coxeter number and a derived category of equivariant coherent sheaves on the Springer resolution (or a parabolic counterpart). In the case of the principal block, combined with previous results, this provides a modular version of celebrated constructions due to Arkhipov–Bezrukavnikov–Ginzburg for Lusztig’s quantum groups at a root of unity. As an application, we prove a “graded version” of a conjecture of Finkelberg–Mirković describing …

We integrated new geologic data with published geophysical data to document that the southernmost San Andreas fault zone, onshore of the Salton Sea, southern California, is a transpressional, 1-4-km-wide ladder-like structure. This newly identified Durmid ladder structure is a voluminous right-reverse fault zone that broadens across Durmid Hill around rotating domains of regularly spaced, left- and rightlateral cross faults. The active East Shoreline fault zone of the San Andreas fault forms the southwest margin of this fault zone, and it is generally parallel to the main strand of the San Andreas fault zone for > 30 km, deforms Pliocene to modern …

Paley–Wiener Theorem For Line Bundles Over Compact Symmetric Spaces And New Estimates For The Heckman–Opdam Hypergeometric Functions, Vivian M. Ho, Gestur Ólafsson

Paley–Wiener type theorems describe the image of a given space of functions, often compactly supported functions, under an integral transform, usually a Fourier transform on a group or homogeneous space. In this article we proved a Paley–Wiener theorem for smooth sections f of homogeneous line bundles on a compact Riemannian symmetric space U/K. It characterizes f with small support in terms of holomorphic extendability and exponential growth of their χ-spherical Fourier transforms, where χ is a character of K. An important tool in our proof is a generalization of Opdam's estimate for the hypergeometric functions associated to multiplicity functions that …

Let M be a 3-connected binary matroid; M is called internally 4-connected if one side of every 3-separation is a triangle or a triad, and M is internally 4-connected if one side of every 3-separation is a triangle, a triad, or a 4-element fan. Assume M is internally 4-connected and that neither M nor its dual is a cubic Möbius or planar ladder or a certain coextension thereof. Let N be an internally 4-connected proper minor of M. Our aim is to show that M has a proper internally 4-connected minor with an N-minor that can be obtained from M …
