Faculty Publications

As-solidified Ni48Co2Mn35In15 ribbons were prepared through the melt-spinning method, and their structural, magnetic, magnetocaloric properties, and martensitic transformations were investigated. The inverse martensitic transformation temperature (TA=325 K) for the melt spun ribbons shifted by 55 K to higher temperature relative to that of the bulk material (TA = 270 K). The working temperature range of the magnetic entropy change (ΔSM) in Ni48Co2Mn35In15 ribbons has been significantly expanded relative to that of bulk. The roles of the magnetostructural transitions on the magneto-responsive properties of the ribbons are discussed.

The Double Dust Envelopes Of R Coronae Borealis Stars, Edward J. Montiel, Geoffrey C. Clayton, B. E.K. Sugerman, A. Evans, D. A. Garcia-Hernández, N. Kameswara Rao, M. Matsuura, P. Tisserand

Faculty Publications

The study of extended, cold dust envelopes surrounding R Coronae Borealis (RCB) stars began with their discovery by the Infrared Astronomical Satellite. RCB stars are carbon-rich supergiants characterized by their extreme hydrogen deficiency and their irregular and spectacular declines in brightness (up to 9 mag). We have analyzed new and archival Spitzer Space Telescope and Herschel Space Observatory data of the envelopes of seven RCB stars to examine the morphology and investigate the origin of these dusty shells. Herschel, in particular, has revealed the first-ever bow shock associated with an RCB star with its observations of SU Tauri. These data …

© 2018 Elsevier B.V. The use of quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) sensor arrays for analyses of volatile organic compounds (VOC) has attracted significant interest in recent years. In this regard, a group of uniformed materials based on organic salts (GUMBOS) has proven to be promising recognition elements in QCM based sensor arrays due to diverse properties afforded by this class of tunable materials. Herein, we examine the application of four novel phthalocyanine based GUMBOS as recognition elements for VOC sensing using a QCM based multisensor array (MSA). These synthesized GUMBOS are composed of copper (II) phthalocyaninetetrasulfonate (CuPcS4) anions coupled with …

Seismic Stratigraphy Of Cretaceous Eastern Central Atlantic Ocean: Basin Evolution And Palaeoceanographic Implications, Yannick Mourlot, Gérôme Calvès, Peter D. Clift, Guillaume Baby, Anne Claire Chaboureau, François Raisson

Faculty Publications

© 2018 Elsevier B.V. The evolution and resulting morphology of a Cretaceous contourite drift in the eastern Central Atlantic oceanic basin is investigated in unprecedented detail using seismic imaging and age-calibrated cross-margin sections. The margin, from the shelf, slope to deep-water and abyssal plain is constructed by a succession of erosive and depositional mounded structures that relate to bottom-water currents and sediment winnowing. The regional mapping of these drifts, sediment waves and gravitational sedimentary systems allows us to test the Upper Cretaceous paleocirculation model. Combined with flexural backstripping of the regional cross section, it reveals the water-depth range at which …

An engineered phiC31 "Disintegrase" able to make an attP site in Drosophila out of an attRattL pair is described. This was used to generate attP sites at genomic locations where a mini-white (mini-w) transgene was subject to chromosomal position effects (CPE). The first step was random genomic integration of a P-element-based transposon with an insulated mini-w transgene. We then removed the …

Prediction And Rehabilitation Of Highway Embankment Slope Failures In Changing Climate, Navid Jafari, Anand Puppala Oct 2018

Prediction And Rehabilitation Of Highway Embankment Slope Failures In Changing Climate, Navid Jafari, Anand Puppala

Publications

Highway slopes constructed with clayey soil are prone to desiccation cracks due to wetting and drying weather cycle, which allows greater moisture infiltration into the embankment from precipitation. Fissures formed due to extended wetting and drying cycles allow water to seep deeper into the soil than surficial wetting and increase the water content. This increases the moisture content in the soil and results in reduction in shear strength to the fully softened strength. On the other hand, development of desiccation cracks and reduction of the soil matric suction ultimately result in higher hydraulic conductivity value which causes development of higher …

Impacts Of Moisture On Asphalt Properties, Zahid Hossain Oct 2018

Impacts Of Moisture On Asphalt Properties, Zahid Hossain

Publications

Stripping related moisture damage has been recognized as one of the major pavement distresses since the early 1990s. The main objective of this study is to establish an effective test protocol to quantify moisture susceptibility of asphalt pavements. To this end, selective test methods (Texas Boiling test, Tensile Strength Ratio, Retained Stability, and Hamburg Wheel Test), and procedures based on surface chemistries and molecular-level mechanistic properties have been investigated in this study. Firstly, a comprehensive list of literature related to moisture damage in asphalts was reviewed. Based on the literature review, a detailed project plan and test matrix were developed. …

Reductive Groups, The Loop Grassmannian, And The Springer Resolution, Pramod N. Achar, Simon Riche Oct 2018

Reductive Groups, The Loop Grassmannian, And The Springer Resolution, Pramod N. Achar, Simon Riche

Faculty Publications

In this paper we prove equivalences of categories relating the derived category of a block of the category of representations of a connected reductive algebraic group over an algebraically closed field of characteristic p bigger than the Coxeter number and a derived category of equivariant coherent sheaves on the Springer resolution (or a parabolic counterpart). In the case of the principal block, combined with previous results, this provides a modular version of celebrated constructions due to Arkhipov–Bezrukavnikov–Ginzburg for Lusztig’s quantum groups at a root of unity. As an application, we prove a “graded version” of a conjecture of Finkelberg–Mirković describing …

Durmid Ladder Structure And Its Implications For The Nucleation Sites Of The Next M > 7.5 Earthquake On The San Andreas Fault Or Brawley Seismic Zone In Southern California, Susanne U. Jänecke, Daniel K. Markowski, James P. Evans, Patricia Persaud, Miles Kenney Oct 2018

Evans, Patricia Persaud, Miles Kenney

Faculty Publications

We integrated new geologic data with published geophysical data to document that the southernmost San Andreas fault zone, onshore of the Salton Sea, southern California, is a transpressional, 1-4-km-wide ladder-like structure. This newly identified Durmid ladder structure is a voluminous right-reverse fault zone that broadens across Durmid Hill around rotating domains of regularly spaced, left- and rightlateral cross faults. The active East Shoreline fault zone of the San Andreas fault forms the southwest margin of this fault zone, and it is generally parallel to the main strand of the San Andreas fault zone for > 30 km, deforms Pliocene to modern …

Paley–Wiener Theorem For Line Bundles Over Compact Symmetric Spaces And New Estimates For The Heckman–Opdam Hypergeometric Functions, Vivian M. Ho, Gestur Ólafsson Oct 2018

Paley–Wiener Theorem For Line Bundles Over Compact Symmetric Spaces And New Estimates For The Heckman–Opdam Hypergeometric Functions, Vivian M. Ho, Gestur Ólafsson

Faculty Publications

Paley–Wiener type theorems describe the image of a given space of functions, often compactly supported functions, under an integral transform, usually a Fourier transform on a group or homogeneous space. In this article we proved a Paley–Wiener theorem for smooth sections f of homogeneous line bundles on a compact Riemannian symmetric space U/K. It characterizes f with small support in terms of holomorphic extendability and exponential growth of their χ-spherical Fourier transforms, where χ is a character of K. An important tool in our proof is a generalization of Opdam's estimate for the hypergeometric functions associated to multiplicity functions that …

Towards A Splitter Theorem For Internally 4-Connected Binary Matroids Vi, Carolyn Chun, James Oxley Oct 2018

Towards A Splitter Theorem For Internally 4-Connected Binary Matroids Vi, Carolyn Chun, James Oxley

Faculty Publications

Let M be a 3-connected binary matroid; M is called internally 4-connected if one side of every 3-separation is a triangle or a triad, and M is internally 4-connected if one side of every 3-separation is a triangle, a triad, or a 4-element fan. Assume M is internally 4-connected and that neither M nor its dual is a cubic Möbius or planar ladder or a certain coextension thereof. Let N be an internally 4-connected proper minor of M. Our aim is to show that M has a proper internally 4-connected minor with an N-minor that can be obtained from M …

Multigrid Methods For H(Div) In Three Dimensions With Nonoverlapping Domain Decomposition Smoothers, Susanne C. Brenner, Duk Soon Oh Oct 2018

Multigrid Methods For H(Div) In Three Dimensions With Nonoverlapping Domain Decomposition Smoothers, Susanne C. Brenner, Duk Soon Oh

Faculty Publications

We design and analyze V-cycle multigrid methods for an H(div) problem discretized by the lowest-order Raviart–Thomas hexahedral element. The smoothers in the multigrid methods involve nonoverlapping domain decomposition preconditioners that are based on substructuring. We prove uniform convergence of the V-cycle methods on bounded convex hexahedral domains (rectangular boxes). Numerical experiments that support the theory are also presented.

Social Class Divergence In Family Transitions: The Importance Of Cohabitation, Heather M. Rackin, Christina M. Gibson-Davis

Faculty Publications

Objective: This study examined trends in familial transitions by maternal education and whether transitions rose because of changes in prevalence (the share of children exposed to a relationship state, either marriage or cohabitation) or churning (the number of entrances and exits conditional on being exposed to a relationship state). Background: Children's experiences of transitions, an important predictor of well-being, have leveled off in recent decades. Plateauing in transitions may reflect heterogeneity by socioeconomic status. Method: Data came from the National Survey of Family Growth on firstborn children observed from ages 0 to 5 among mothers aged 15 to 34 at …

Enhanced Sorption Of Hexavalent Chromium [Cr(Vi)] From Aqueous Solutions By Diluted Sulfuric Acid-Assisted Mgo-Coated Biochar Composite, Ran Xiao, Jim J. Wang, Ronghua Li, Jonghwan Park, Yili Meng, Baoyue Zhou, Scott Pensky, Zengqiang Zhang

Faculty Publications

Metal oxide-Carbon composites have aroused great interesting towards specific anionic contaminants removal from the polluted environment. In this study, aiming at removing toxic chromate ion [Cr(VI)] from aqueous solutions, a novel approach was developed to produce surface-enhanced MgO-coated biochar adsorbent from sugarcane harvest residue (SHR). It was found that sulfuric acid hydrolysis and MgO-coating both facilitated the removal of Cr(VI) by biochars, and the maximum sorption capacities for the pristine biochar (SHR550), MgO-coated biochar (MgSHR550), and acid-assisted MgO-coated biochar (MgASHR550) that derived from the Langmuir isotherm model were 20.79, 54.64, and 62.89 mg g−1, respectively. Additionally, the Cr(VI) removal was …

Response Of Microbial Populations Regulating Nutrient Biogeochemical Cycles To Oiling Of Coastal Saltmarshes From The Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill, Hee Sung Bae, Laibin Huang, John R. White, Jim Wang, Ronald D. Delaune, Andrew Ogram Oct 2018

Response Of Microbial Populations Regulating Nutrient Biogeochemical Cycles To Oiling Of Coastal Saltmarshes From The Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill, Hee Sung Bae, Laibin Huang, John R. White, Jim Wang, Ronald D. Delaune, Andrew Ogram

Faculty Publications

Microbial communities play vital roles in the biogeochemistry of nutrients in coastal saltmarshes, ultimately controlling water quality, nutrient cycling, and detoxification. We determined the structure of microbial populations inhabiting coastal saltmarsh sediments from northern Barataria Bay, Louisiana, USA to gain insight into impacts on the biogeochemical cycles affected by Macondo oil from the 2010 Deepwater Horizon well blowout two years after the accident. Quantitative PCR directed toward specific functional genes revealed that oiled marshes were greatly diminished in the population sizes of diazotrophs, denitrifiers, nitrate-reducers to ammonia, methanogens, sulfate-reducers and anaerobic aromatic degraders, and harbored elevated numbers of alkane-degraders. Illumina …

A Parameterized Proximal Point Algorithm For Separable Convex Optimization, Jianchao Bai, Hongchao Zhang, Jicheng Li Oct 2018

A Parameterized Proximal Point Algorithm For Separable Convex Optimization, Jianchao Bai, Hongchao Zhang, Jicheng Li

Faculty Publications

In this paper, we develop a parameterized proximal point algorithm (P-PPA) for solving a class of separable convex programming problems subject to linear and convex constraints. The proposed algorithm is provable to be globally convergent with a worst-case O(1 / t) convergence rate, where t denotes the iteration number. By properly choosing the algorithm parameters, numerical experiments on solving a sparse optimization problem arising from statistical learning show that our P-PPA could perform significantly better than other state-of-the-art methods, such as the alternating direction method of multipliers and the relaxed proximal point algorithm.

Microlensing events observed from locations separated by ∼au have different peak times and peak magnifications due to microlensing parallax. K2 Campaign 9 (K2C9) was the first space-based microlensing parallax survey capable of measuring microlensing parallaxes of free-floating planet candidate microlensing events. Simultaneous to K2C9 observations we conducted the K2C9 Canada–France–Hawaii Telescope Multi-Color Microlensing Survey (K2C9-CFHT MCMS) in order to measure the colors of microlensing source stars to improve the accuracy of K2C9’s parallax measurements. We describe the difference imaging photometry analysis of the K2C9-CFHT MCMS observations, and present the project’s first data release. This includes instrumental difference flux light curves …

Measurement And Modeling Of The Spatiotemporal Dynamics Of Beach Surface Moisture Content, Phillip P. Schmutz, Steven L. Namikas Oct 2018

Measurement And Modeling Of The Spatiotemporal Dynamics Of Beach Surface Moisture Content, Phillip P. Schmutz, Steven L. Namikas

Faculty Publications

The spatiotemporal dynamics of surface moisture exert a significant influence on the operation of aeolian transport systems at many beaches. However, we currently lack the detailed understanding of variability in surface moisture required to incorporate it into aeolian models. This problem is addressed here through direct measurements and simulation modeling of beach surface moisture over a twelve-day period, and through quantification of the relative contributions of evaporation, condensation and groundwater inputs to surface moisture. It was found that the beach surface can be characterized spatially in terms of three moisture zones: a consistently dry zone (40%). The relative influence of …
