A modified two-dimensional central composite rotatable design was used to study the effect of thaw bath temperature and time on acrosomal integrity in Continental (.3 ml) and French (.5 ml) straws. Ejaculates from 18 bulls were packaged in both containers. Semen from 6 of the 18 bulls was processed by each of three methods: 6 bulls for egg yolk- Tris-glycerol, 6 bulls for egg yolk-citrate-glycerol, and 6 bulls for skim milk- glycerol. Thaw bath temperatures ranged from 18 to 92° C, and thaw times ranged from 4.5 to 50 s. Interaction of thaw bath temperature with thaw time was detected …
The Habitat And Cost Of Production Of Domestic Petroleum Resources., John Daniel Grace
The Habitat And Cost Of Production Of Domestic Petroleum Resources., John Daniel Grace
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The geologic characteristics of an oil field, most importantly its depth and surface area, have significant impacts on the average cost of extracting petroleum. These characteristics of petroleum habitat constitute a measure of "deposit quality," as ore grade does in the production of metals. This measure can be used to separately evaluate the effects on cost, over time, of changing depost quality and technological advance. A sample of 156 U.S. fields, with average estimated ultimate recovery of 50 million barrels, was analyzed to quantify the cross-sectional differences in average production cost on the basis of depth, area, productive capacity, reservoir …
The Ethno-Archaeology Of The Houma Indians, Bryan L. Guevin
The Ethno-Archaeology Of The Houma Indians, Bryan L. Guevin
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The focus of this research is comprised of two objectives. The first attempts to ethno-historically reconstruct the early historic culture of the Houma Indians of Louisiana based upon seventeenth and eighteenth century archival and documentary sources with attention being paid to such ethnographic aspects as Houma subsistence, social organization, and ceremonialism. The second objective, by way of utilizing additional historical documentation such as early cartographic evidence, predicts and locates historic Houma village sites. An archaeological examination and discussion of these sites is presented in terms of an attempt to diagnostically identify broad ethnic markers within the historic Houma material culture.

Where Did The Bayogoula Dance; Why Do They Sing No More: A Reexamination Of The Archaeology Of The Bayou Goula Area, Iberville Parish, Louisiana, Glen G. Fredlund
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Two objectives are undertaken. The first is the identity of the two 18th century archaeological sites at Bayou Goula. A reexamination of the ethnohistorical and -archaeological records of the area reveals that the Bayou Goula site traditionally accepted as an aboriginal village is actually the site of an early French settlement. A second archaeological site recently discovered is hypothesized to be the 1699 village of the Bayogoula and Mugulasha.
The second objective was a methodological study of aboriginal ceramics from this recently discovered site. The type-variety system is rejected in favor of an attribute or "modal" analysis in evaluating competing …

A Study Of Polynuclear Aromatic Hydrocarbons On An Amino Bonded Phase Liquid Chromatographic Column In The Normal And Reversed Phase, Dori Karlesky, Dennis C. Shelly, Isiah M. Warner
Faculty Publications
Experiments were run using an n-propyl amine polar bonded phase (Chromosorb LC-9) liquid chromatographic column in both the normal and reversed phase mode. Results confirm that the mechanism of separation in the normal phase is due mainly to a charge transfer interaction between the lone pair electrons on the stationary phase nitrogen and the π electron cloud of the solute PNAs. Elution order seems to depend upon a combination of π energy, and type of ring condensation of the solute. Plots of log I versus number of aromatic carbons for catacondensed PNAs suggest that while the specific interaction is different …

Studies of six 8-9-month-old rams showed that the specific activities of myoinositol-1-phosphate synthase (EC 5.5.1.4) were highest in epididymal spermatozoa, intermediate in testis and lowest in epididymal tissue. The activity per spermatozoon decreased from caput to cauda. The levels of activity of myo-inositol-1-phosphate synthase in ejaculated spermatozoa from four 3-year-old rams and the seminal vesicles of two 3-year-old rams were insignificant, but in pooled Sertoli cells from the testes of young lambs, the specific activity was much lower than in epididymal spermatozoa although activity per cell was of the same order of magnitude. We conclude that epididymal spermatozoa contain a …

Pigeons acquired a different four‐response chain each session by responding sequentially on three keys in the presence of a sequence of four colors. The response chain was maintained by food presentation under a fixed‐ratio schedule. Errors produced a brief timeout but did not reset the chain. Each day there were four 15‐minute sessions, with a 10‐minute intersession interval. Cumulative dose‐effect curves for phencyclidine, pentobarbital, and d‐amphetamine were obtained by giving an injection before each of the four sessions; successive injections increased the cumulative dose in equally spaced logarithmic steps. For comparison, non‐cumulative doses of each drug (i.e., doses not preceded …

A systemic streptococcal infection in cultured bullfrogs in Brazil was characterized by necrotizing splenitis and hepatitis with hepatic and renal hemorrhage. A non-hemolytic Group B Streptococcus appeared to be the cause of the lesions, and the stimulus for the splenic reticuloendothelial hyperplasia observed in the animals. Stress may have been a factor in the development of the pathological condition.
The Use Of The Grotesque In The Plays Of Edward Bond., Ann Marie Demling
The Use Of The Grotesque In The Plays Of Edward Bond., Ann Marie Demling
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A contemporary English dramatist, Edward Bond writes plays that have often been controversial because of their use of cruelty, violence, and other forms of bizarre behavior which can be considered grotesque. The grotesque is a concept originating in the fifteenth century as a term referring to primitive artwork combining various forms to create a fanciful design. The term broadened in the eighteenth century to include literature and drama. Possessing a negative connotation, it referred to elements which were ridiculous, incongruous, absurd, or deformed. The Romanticists of the nineteenth century favored the grotesque as a valid aesthetic element which acted as …

"New Literary History" And The Postmodern Paradigm: Implications For Theatre History., Robert Gerard Staggenborg
"New Literary History" And The Postmodern Paradigm: Implications For Theatre History., Robert Gerard Staggenborg
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Thomas S. Kuhn writes of disciplinary paradigms, presuppositions tactily setting the epistemological boundaries of a particular field or of the vision of a particular epoch. In the past decade, a paradigmatic revolution has deeply altered the western world's sense of reality. A new postmodern paradigm has emerged and evidenced itself in such critical approaches to art as semiotics, phenomenology, poststructuralism, and hermeneutics. The aim of the present study is to identify the central theoretical perspective offered by the new paradigm, to examine and define the central critico-historical principles stemming from such a perspective, and to relate these principles to the …

The Theatre Management Of Alexandre Placide In Charleston, 1794-1812. (Volumes I And Ii) (South Carolina)., Richard Phillip Sodders
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study focuses upon the management career of Alexandre Placide (c. 1750-1812) in Charleston, South Carolina, between 1794 and 1812. Initially a performer of pantomimes, ballets, and acrobatics, Placide came to America in 1791 after a distinguished career of approximately twenty-one years in Europe and the French colony of Saint-Domingue. For two years, he appeared in the principal theatre centers of this country, and in 1794, he arrived in Charleston to manage John Sollee's French Theatre, the most important French-speaking playhouse of early America, except for New Orleans. He eventually became the leading theatre figure in Charleston, and by 1802, …

Biological, Ecological, And Morphological Investigations Of The Rice Water Weevil, Lissorhoptrus Oryzophilus Kuschel, On Two Rice Genotypes., Gary Leonard Cave
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The rice water weevil, Lissorhoptrus oryzophilus Kuschel, is the most important insect pest of rice, Oryza sativa (L.), in the United States. Although this insect has been associated with O. sativa since the introduction of this plant species into the United States in 1685, some aspects of its biology remain obscure. Larvae of L. oryzophilus have four instars, based on measurements of head-capsule widths of field-collected larvae in 1981 and 1982. The head-capsule widths of each instar were: I, 0.14 to 0.18 mm; II, 0.20 to 0.26 mm; III, 0.28 to 0.38 mm; IV, 0.40 to 0.60 mm. Further studies …

Born in the Upson County, Georgia in February 1832, John Brown Gordon attended the University of Georgia, practiced law in Atlanta and, in the years immediately preceding the Civil War, developed coal mines in northwestern Georgia. He responded to the Confederate call to arms by raising a company of volunteers. In spite of his want of formal military schooling, Gordon displayed courage, boldness, vigilance, aggressiveness, and sound military sense on every battlefield upon which he fought. His rise from captain to corps commander was unmatched in the Army of Northern Virginia. Emerging from the war as one of the South's …
A Description Of The Ten Southeastern Conference Marching Band Programs., Harry Crozier Patzig
A Description Of The Ten Southeastern Conference Marching Band Programs., Harry Crozier Patzig
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Marching band programs and philosophies have changed considerably since the early part of the 1960s. The advent of contemporary marching band concepts (techniques/styles) has had a profound influence on the development, participation, and growth of marching band programs throughout the United States. The marching band continues to evolve into an art form closely associated with the American culture. The purpose of this study was to describe, in terms of organizational structures, marching concepts employed, and the addition of auxiliary units, the activities of the ten Southeastern Conference (SEC) marching band programs for the 1981 season. A questionnaire was developed and …
Marjorie Gullan: Speech Teacher, Lecturer, Public Reader, And Pioneer In Choral Speaking (Scotland, England)., Ronald Eugene Shields
Marjorie Gullan: Speech Teacher, Lecturer, Public Reader, And Pioneer In Choral Speaking (Scotland, England)., Ronald Eugene Shields
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Historians of oral interpretation and speech education acknowledge Marjorie Gullan as a pioneer figure. However, they limit their discussion to Gullan's activities as a pioneer in popularizing choral speaking and neglect her other professional involvements as a speech teacher, lecturer, and public reader. This study traces Gullan's career from the earliest years in Scotland to her death, and illustrates the interdependence between her experiences as a speech teacher and her experiments with choral speaking as an educational and artistic technique. Born in the late nineteenth century, Gullan witnessed the waning days of elocution, and throughout her lengthy career, which extended …
The Social Strategy Implementation Process: An Exploratory Investigation., Jean Garner Stead
The Social Strategy Implementation Process: An Exploratory Investigation., Jean Garner Stead
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The ability to formulate and implement social strategies has become increasingly important as a means for firms to manage the socio-political elements in their environments. This dissertation is an exploratory study designed to examine the internal process of corporate social strategy implementation. Specifically, the study is an in-depth, one-firm research case analysis of the implementation process in an organically structured organization. The literature is in agreement that in today's turbulent socio-political environment it is necessary for a firm to formulate and implement effective social strategies. Yet, only two previous studies (Ackerman and Murray) have examined the process of implementing social …

The Effect Of Feedback Frequency On Performance In Applied Behavior Analysis: A Field Study., Jagdeep Singh Chhokar
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Occupational safety continues to be a major social concern in spite of the attention which it has received over the years. While unsafe acts and behaviors have been major contributors to accidents, the attention paid to increasing safety by changing human behavior has only been sporadic. This study used an applied behavior analysis package of training, goal setting, and feedback as a behavioral approach to improving safety in an industrial setting. In addition, the effects of changing the frequency of feedback on safe behavior performance were investigated. All the employees in a plant engaged in the manufacture and repair of …

Molecular Cloning Of Sugarcane Mosaic Virus Complementary-Dna: Use As A Probe For The Detection Of Virus Infection And Viral-Rnas., Roy Chester French
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
DNA complementary (cDNA) to the RNA genome of sugarcane mosaic virus strain H (SCMV-H) was synthesized using avian myeloblastosis virus reverse transcriptase and oligo(dT) as primer. Second strand synthesis used the same enzyme and oligo(dG) primer after tailing the first strand with oligo(dC). Double-stranded cDNA was inserted into the PstI site of plasmid pBR322 by the G-C tailing method and cloned in Esherichia coli HB101. Twenty recombinant clones containing SCMV-H sequences were obtained, but most had inserts less than 500 base pairs (0.5 kbp). Two plasmids, S47-6 and S47-20, however, had larger inserts of 1.2 kbp and 2.7 kbp, respectively …

Strangers In The Land: The Southern Clergy And The Economic Mind Of The Old South., Kenneth Moore Startup
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The antebellum southern clergy has often been characterized as narrow-minded and reactionary with little or no social vision and with little or no commitment to social reformation. My study, which is based upon an expansive survey of the sermons and religious writings of protestant slave state ministers, reveals instead an insightful, critical, and outspoken clergy determined to change southern society; principally to turn southerners from materialism and greed to spirituality and altruism. In their attempt to reform southern society, they condemned explicitly what they considered the ostentation, arrogance, and selfishness of the upper classes and called for a more equitable …
Platonic Economic Theory: The Economics Of Moderation., Kenneth Neal Townsend
Platonic Economic Theory: The Economics Of Moderation., Kenneth Neal Townsend
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation analyzes the contributions to the economic analysis of welfare made by the ancient Greek philosopher Plato. Heretofore unexamined, these contributions demonstrate the importance of the development of notions of sufficiency and moderation as integral parts of welfare analysis. This dissertation also examines the significance of Plato's method of inquiry into matters of social science for contemporary economic analysis. In particular, the importance of metamathematical induction for the acquisition of knowledge of the values upon which welfare depend is analyzed in the form that it is employed in Plato's dialogues. This analysis is conducted to the end that economists …

Vitamin A has, apart from its function in the visual pigments, general effects on several organs. Early signs of vitamin A deficiency include keratinization of epithelia and hyperkeratosis of the skin. To elucidate a generalized function for vitamin A, we have taken the approach of tracing the vitamin from its storage site in the liver via its blood transport by the retinol-binding protein (RBP) to its uptake by susceptible cells. We have also examined the intracellular occurrence of vitamin A as regards its binding to specific receptor proteins. Here we summarize data on the amino acid sequences of several vitamin …

Age-standardized death rates from all causes for persons age 35-74 fell 23 per cent, 1968-1979. The monotonic decline was interrupted by only one period of excess influenza mortality. In the late 1970s, however, the decline in mortality decelerated and no further decrease was observed, 1979-1981. The recurrence of epidemic influenza contributed significantly to this trend although it would appear that the underlying mortality pattern has begun to change.

A Monte Carlo Study On The Performance Of The Lagrange Multiplier Test To Collinearity Among Independent Variables When Multiplicative Heteroscedasticity Is Present, Gunduz Kamil Sunol
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This thesis is limited to a Monte Carlo study on the performance of the Lagrange multiplier test in terms of its power and robustness to collinearity when the independent variables are distributed both multivariate and lognormal with a given covariance matrix. Power is defined as the probability of rejecting the null hypothesis under the assumption that the alternative hypothesis is true. This probability is estimated for several sets of parameters and sample sizes using the Lagrange multiplier test. The results of the analysis indicate that very significant variations in the power of the test occur in the case of highly …
