(Re)Shaping The Path Of Rural Tourism In Central Vietnam: When Traditionalism As A Driver For Architectural Multiformity, Tung Minh Tran, Chau Thi Bao Huynh
CIB Conferences
Rural tourism in Central Vietnam faces tension between infrastructure modernization and the preservation of vernacular architectural identity. This paper examines the (re)configuration of rural tourism by conceptualizing traditionalism as a driver for architectural multiformity rather than a static constraint. Through a multiple-case study of six representative villages and 23 semi-structured interviews with local stakeholders, the study identifies (neo-)vernacular practices and strategies for integrating local materials into contemporary hospitality typologies. Findings demonstrate that a tradition-centric approach supports hybrid morphologies that balance heritage conservation with economic needs. The paper concludes that traditionalism provides a resilient framework for shaping sustainable, locally grounded tourism …

Traditional safety approaches that focus solely on accident prevention have failed to address the significant burden of work-related illnesses and musculoskeletal disorders affecting construction workers. Ergonomic interventions are known to improve worker health, safety, and performance, but their systematic integration into construction health and safety management systems remains limited, particularly in developing-country contexts. Existing frameworks provide useful insights, but many are generic, limited to the design phase, or insufficiently attentive to implementation, stakeholder coordination, and long-term sustainability in project-based construction environments. This paper addresses a gap in construction ergonomics research by focusing on the organisational processes through which ergonomics becomes …

Identifying Risks In Social Housing Construction Investment Projects In Hanoi, Vietnam, Thuy Thi Nguyen, Linh Dieu Pham, Anh Thi Ngoc Tran
CIB Conferences
As of 2025, Hanoi’s population exceeded 8.7 million, representing approximately 8.59% of the national population. The city’s urbanization rate increased from 36.8% in 1999 to 41.0% in 2009 and 49.2% in 2019, and is projected to reach approximately 63% by 2025 and nearly 70% by 2035. Rapid population growth coupled with accelerated urbanization has placed substantial pressure on urban housing systems. In response, social housing construction projects have become a crucial policy instrument for addressing the escalating demand for affordable housing. However, these projects are inherently exposed to risks throughout the construction investment processing. This paper aims to identify and …

Linking Project Information Management To Construction Project Success In Digitalised Environments, Quang-Phuong Luu, Quan T. Nguyen, Eric Lou
CIB Conferences
The increasing digitalisation of construction projects has transformed how information is produced, stored, and exchanged. Yet despite widespread adoption of digital platforms and standards, many projects continue to experience coordination failures, safety issues, and weak organisational learning, suggesting that information availability alone does not guarantee improved outcomes. This paper examines how Project Information Management (PrIM) influences project success in digitalised environments, moving beyond traditional delivery-focused criteria. Using a structured literature-based synthesis of 27 journal articles combined with a mechanism mapping approach, it develops a mechanism-based explanation of how PrIM bridges digital infrastructure and project success through organisational processes. The analysis …

Influence Of Cfrp-Confined Concrete Models On The Load Capacity Of Strengthened Reinforced Concrete Columns Under Uniaxial Bending, Phuoc Lanh Le, Truong Thang Nguyen, Trung Hieu Nguyen
CIB Conferences
The axial load-bending moment about single axis (P-M) interaction diagram characterizes the uniaxial-bending load capacity of CFRP-strengthened reinforced concrete (RC) columns. Although numerous CFRP-confined concrete models have been proposed in previous studies, the influence of different CFRP-confined concrete models on the P-M interaction behavior of columns has not yet been fully examined. This study investigates the effects of various confined concrete models on the P-M interaction diagrams of a prototype CFRP-strengthened RC columns. Sectional analysis is carried out based on the plane-section assumption and internal force equilibrium, in which the column’s cross-section is discretized into strips parallel to the neutral …

Toward An Audit-Informed Training Effectiveness Index For Construction Safety: A Bayesian Hierarchical Model Using Objective Performance Proxies, Duc A. Nguyen, Hong-Ha Le
CIB Conferences
This paper proposes a Bayesian hierarchical model for a Training Effectiveness Index (TEI) inferred from four objective performance proxies: inspection non-conformities, permit-to-work violations, near-miss events, and corrective-action closure time. Applied to data from ten subcontractors over six quarters in Hanoi, Vietnam, seven MAP optimizations all converged to log-posterior = −594.94 and σα = 1.316 (95% CI: 1.193–1.439) confirms identifiable between-subcontractor heterogeneity. LOSO cross-validation (ELPD = −685.0) confirms hyperparameter transferability. Near-miss counts are near-redundant (r = 0.9996 with three-proxy model; max difference 2.8 points). Comparison with PCA and z-score baselines yields r = 0.913. Key limitations - cells-to-parameters ratio of 1.94 …

Identification Of Scaffold Defect Risk Factors And Risk-Tier Inspection Intervals For Vietnam Construction Sites, Hong Ha Le, Duc A. Nguyen
CIB Conferences
Scaffold failures are a persistent safety burden driven by assembly quality variability, environmental exposure, and frequent site modifications. This study develops and validates a risk-tier inspection scheduling framework that converts routine scaffold inspection logs into interval-level predictions of critical defects. Using 950 inspection intervals from three Vietnamese regions (Northern, Middle coastal, Southern), a complementary log-log model with Elastic Net regularization predicts whether a critical defect will be detected at the next inspection. Critical events occurred in 14.21% of intervals. The model achieves strong discrimination (ROC-AUC = 0.995, AP = 0.984, Brier = 0.018); at the operating threshold, Precision = 1.000 …

Large language models (LLMs) are increasingly proposed for construction-site safety question answering, yet the evidence base remains small, recent, and methodologically mixed. This review synthesises 17 studies identified through a PRISMA-guided search of Scopus and Web of Science, supplemented by backward snowballing and structured quality appraisal. Unlike broader surveys of artificial intelligence in construction, the paper focuses on how LLM-based safety QA systems are adapted for reliability in high-stakes site contexts. The corpus is organised into three intervention layers: prompt and interaction design, retrieval and knowledge grounding, and model-level architectural adaptation. Prompt-based approaches are accessible and common, but remain constrained …

CIB Conferences
Reinforced concrete is the most commonly used structural material in construction today. To fabricate reinforced concrete components and structures, formwork made of wood or metal is often used temporarily to shape and secure the fresh concrete, and it is removed once the concrete hardens. The installation and removal of temporary formwork generate a large amount of solid waste at the construction site and consume significant resources in terms of labor costs and construction time. Prefabricated and semi-prefabricated reinforced concrete structures are effective alternatives to minimize construction waste, shorten construction time, and reduce installation costs. This paper introduces a new semi-prefabricated …

Urban rail construction is one of the most safety-critical engineering domains, where even minor errors can lead to catastrophic consequences. Large Language Models (LLMs) offer promising capabilities for automating safety risk extraction from accident reports; however, their deployment is critically hindered by hallucinations – outputs that are fluent yet factually incorrect or logically inconsistent. Existing prompting methods such as Chain-of-Thought rely on implicit reasoning without explicit problem representation, leading to brittleness, logical drift, and undetected constraint violations. This paper addresses key research gaps in current approaches, including the lack of constraint grounding in authoritative knowledge bases, the absence of explicit …

The Impact Of Commute Length On Safety And Wellbeing In Uk Construction Workers, Amy Brandreth, Billy Hare, Kenneth Lawani
The Impact Of Commute Length On Safety And Wellbeing In Uk Construction Workers, Amy Brandreth, Billy Hare, Kenneth Lawani
CIB Conferences
This paper, contributing a small part to a related PhD, uses a systematic literature review approach to examine the impact of commuting on fatigue, safety and wellbeing among construction workers. Eight empirical studies were analysed using Braun and Clarke’s thematic analysis with three themes being identified: commute length, long working hours and commuting vs staying away from home. The results indicate that commutes can far exceed the UK average commute length, and this, combined with long working hours, reduces sleep opportunities. However, staying away from home introduces lifestyle and environmental factors, such as diet and exercise, which may also impair …

Attention to workers’ safety, health, and well-being (SHW) in construction and engineering (particularly in developing countries) is growing gradually. Areas such as designing for safety (DfS) and mental health and wellbeing (MHW) remain under prioritised despite their potential to significantly enhance SHW. Using Egypt as a case study, this research investigates the challenges associated with DfS and MHW in the construction and engineering sector and explores industry skill and knowledge needs, and the roles of universities and industry in addressing these issues. Data were collected through focus group discussions and an industry panel involving university staff, practitioners, and students, and …
