Factors Affecting The Success/Nonsuccess Of Small Farmers In Louisiana., Adell Brown Jan 1984

Factors Affecting The Success/Nonsuccess Of Small Farmers In Louisiana., Adell Brown

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In Louisiana it was observed that many small farmers survived over long periods of time, while others with similar farm resources did not. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the social and economic factors affecting the degree of success of small farmers. A major objective was to compare two methodologies used in defining and evaluating success on a small farm. The farm business approach as measured by economic performance (quantitative) was compared to the family well-being approach as measured by socio-economic factors (qualitative to determine similarities and differences in classifying successful and nonsuccessful farms. The literature was examined …

The Vanquished Christ Of Modern Passion Drama., Lynda Margaret Scott Donaldson Jan 1984

The Vanquished Christ Of Modern Passion Drama., Lynda Margaret Scott Donaldson

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The study of "The Vanquished Christ in Modern Passion Drama" selects from the anthropocentric passion imagery in over fifty modern plays written in English between 1864 and 1980. By focusing on the modern passion dramas which appeared during the 1920s and in the postmodern period coinciding with the conflict in Vietnam of 1957 through 1973, the main thrust of this research reveals the modern poetic vision of the Christ figure of passion persona who, like mankind at war, is threatened with extinction. The modern, radical poetic vision differs from the traditional view of the passion demonstrated in pageants such as …

Stewardship Of Creation: Some Implications For Economic Theory And Policy., John Harlan Mcdonald Jan 1984

Stewardship Of Creation: Some Implications For Economic Theory And Policy., John Harlan Mcdonald

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Neoclassical economic theory defines an optimal or efficient allocation of natural resources as one which secures the maximum output of preferred goods and services, or as an allocation in which the resources are used in their highest valued uses. The theory is based on two important normative assumptions: the welfare of the community is an increasing function of the individual's welfare, and an individual is better off in a freely chosen position. These assumptions form a subjective theory of value which locates the source of intrinsic value in the individual's tastes and preferences; value or wealth is whatever satisfies the …

A Regression Model To Measure The Impact Of Actual And Proposed Class Scheduling Policies On Electricity Consumption: A Case Study At Louisiana State University., Enrique Mejorada Jan 1984

A Regression Model To Measure The Impact Of Actual And Proposed Class Scheduling Policies On Electricity Consumption: A Case Study At Louisiana State University., Enrique Mejorada

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Universities have adopted many programs to conserve electricity and counteract its high costs. Electricity can be conserved by adopting a class scheduling policy which schedules a reduced number of classes when the weather is more inclement. A regression model is postulated to measure the impact of the actual class scheduling policy on the 3-hourly electricity consumption at Louisiana State University. This model explicitly considers the effects of students' load, temperature, and humidity, and implicitly considers variables such as electricity prices and implemented electricity conservation programs through dummy variables. Also, two- and three-way interaction effects are considered in this model. Since …

Herman Frasch (German Immigrant Chemist, Standard Oil, Petroleum; Ohio, Louisiana)., William Ralph Sutton Jan 1984

Herman Frasch (German Immigrant Chemist, Standard Oil, Petroleum; Ohio, Louisiana)., William Ralph Sutton

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Herman Frasch (1851-1914) invented the hot-water process for mining sulphur that permitted the exploitation of the rich deposits beneath the coastal plain of the Gulf of Mexico. The Frasch process enabled the United States to become self-sufficient in the production of this important industrial mineral and the major supplier to the world. Frasch's new idea was to inject steam into the underground deposit to melt the sulphur and then pump the liquid to the surface. He patented the process in 1891 and first demonstrated its technical success at Sulphur, Louisiana in 1894. Initially plagued with problems due to the high …

The purpose of the study was to determine the amount of original material retained by a specific television format, the telefilm. The telefilms studied were Go Ask Alice (1973) credited to Beatrice Sparks, adapted by Ellen M. Violett; Summer of My German Soldier (1978) by Bette Greene, adapted by Jane-Howard Hammerstein; and Are You in the House Alone? (1978) by Richard Peck, adapted by Judith Parker. Videotapes, transcripts, and the novels were studied by dividing the latter two into …

The Effects Of Widescreen Television On Local And National Newscaster Credibility: An Experimental Study., Donald Ray Mott Jan 1984

The Effects Of Widescreen Television On Local And National Newscaster Credibility: An Experimental Study., Donald Ray Mott

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study was to determine if there were any perceived differences in credibility between the widescreen television treatment, standard screen treatment and national and local newscasters. The data revealed no significant differences as a result of the widescreen television treatment. In addition, no significant main effects were observed between the newscaster treatments, "local" and "national," suggesting that as a group, viewers do not appear to have any predispositional attitudes dependent upon specific criteria toward the credibility of either type of newscaster. The design of the experiment was a classic 2 x 2 factorial design. The stimulus was …

Love And Rebellion: Louisiana Women Novelists, 1865-1919 (Wetmore)., Susan Millar Williams Jan 1984

Love And Rebellion: Louisiana Women Novelists, 1865-1919 (Wetmore)., Susan Millar Williams

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation is a study of minor Louisiana women novelists from the end of the Civil War to the passage of women's suffrage. A large number of Louisiana women were spurred to write novels by the war and Reconstruction, motivated by both financial considerations and the need to explain their lives. They use conventional forms, like the plantation romance, but the stories they tell suggest that women were ambivalent about Southern traditions and the old order. In breaking down the social codes which both protected and repressed Louisiana women, the Civil War and the Reconstruction led Louisiana women novelists to …

Effect Of Feedback On Selected Teaching Behaviors Of Agricultural Teacher Educators., Walter Stephen Woodley Jan 1984

Effect Of Feedback On Selected Teaching Behaviors Of Agricultural Teacher Educators., Walter Stephen Woodley

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study was conducted to determine the impact of student feedback upon the teaching behavior of agricultural teacher educators. An experimental pretest posttest control group design was used for the study. Ninety-seven agricultural teacher educators were surveyed and 62 (63.9%) agricultural teacher educators and their students participated on both the initial and final assessment. A modification of the Tuckman Teacher Feedback Form (TTFF) was used to measure the agricultural teacher educators' self-perceptions and their students' perceptions. The TTFF measures four dimensions of teaching behavior: creativity, dynamism, organized demeanor, and warmth and acceptance. The multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) and the …

An Investigation Of The Curricular Content Of Instrumental Music Education Methods Courses At Selected Colleges And Universities (Band, Orchestra, Instruments)., Paul Keith Garrison

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Instrumental music education methods courses are considered essential in the training of future school band and orchestra directors. The National Association of Schools of Music, state departments of education, and colleges and university catalogs specify at least one such course be included in the undergraduate curriculum of prospective instrumental music teachers. A review of the literature pertinent to instrumental music education methods classes indicated the curricular content of these courses had not been investigated previously. Several sources implied such a study would be helpful in determining and eliminating current inadequacies of instrumental music education methods classes and in making future …

The Design And Evaluation Of An Integrating Monitoring Device For Ozone Using 10,10'-Dimethyl-9,9'-Biacridylidene., Marion Rene Surgi Jan 1984

The Design And Evaluation Of An Integrating Monitoring Device For Ozone Using 10,10'-Dimethyl-9,9'-Biacridylidene., Marion Rene Surgi

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A unique film badge design in which a reagent 10,10'-dimethyl-9,9'-biacridylidene (DBA) is dissolved homogeneously in a gas-permeable, silicone-polycarbonate copolymer film, was evaluated. The ambient concentration of ozone can be determined from its reaction with DBA. The disappearance of DBA upon ozonolysis can be monitored at 4300 (ANGSTROM) without extraction or desorption from the polymer membrane. Unlike other reagents for ozone determination, DBA is specific for ozone. Interferences from nitrogen dioxide and sulfur dioxide are less than 1%. Prior to this experimental work, a mathematical diffusion model was developed to predict the response of such a device to a given pollutant …

A History Of Louisiana, 1939-1945. (Volumes I And Ii)., Jerry Purvis Sanson Jan 1984

A History Of Louisiana, 1939-1945. (Volumes I And Ii)., Jerry Purvis Sanson

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation is a study of Louisiana's political, social, and economic development during World War II. Louisiana in 1939 was a rural, agricultural, poorly-educated, racially segregated, one-party, southern state. By 1945, however, many aspects of life in Louisiana had changed. Louisiana's political development during the war years was marked by the temporary displacement of the Longite faction of the Democratic party by the reform faction of the party. Even though reformers Sam Jones and James H. Davis captured control of the executive branch of the state government, Longites remained strong in the legislature and in minor state offices. The Longite …

Studies In The Relationship Between Distinctive Features And Acoustic Cues (Phonetics, Phonology)., Thomas F. Walsh Jan 1984

Studies In The Relationship Between Distinctive Features And Acoustic Cues (Phonetics, Phonology)., Thomas F. Walsh

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The relationship between the Distinctive Feature (DF) (+OR-)Voice and its acoustic manifestation has generated a great deal of discussion in recent years. Although it is well known that the phonological voicing contrast is often not manifested in terms of actual glottal pulsation, the exact acoustic manifestation has been debated. The collection of papers presented herein considers perceptual evidence for the acoustic manifestation of (+OR-)Voice in English stops in utterance-final position, produced without release and with no glottal pulsation during closure. It is concluded that in such cases, the primary acoustic cue to (+OR-)Voice is the preceding vocalic transition. That is …

Faculty Publications

The complex of retinol with its carrier protein, retinol-binding protein (RBP) has been crystallized and its three-dimensional structure determined using X-ray crystallography. Its most striking feature is an eight-stranded up-and-down beta barrel core that completely encapsulates the retinol molecule. The retinol molecule lies along the axis of the barrel with the beta-ionone ring innermost and the tip of the isoprene tail close to the surface.

External Labelling Of Glycoproteins From First-Trimester Human Placental Microvilli, S. J. Fisher, M. S. Leitch, R. A. Laine Jan 1984

External Labelling Of Glycoproteins From First-Trimester Human Placental Microvilli, S. J. Fisher, M. S. Leitch, R. A. Laine

Faculty Publications

The brush-border glycoproteins of first-trimester human placentas were investigated by using two external labelling techniques: (1) sequential digestion with neuraminidase and galactose oxidase, followed by reduction with NaB3H4, which 3H-labels terminal galactose and galactosaminase residues; and (2) sequential treatment with periodate and NaB3H4, which 3H-terminal sialic acid residues. The labelling procedures were performed on intact tissue so that the results would more closely approximate the topography of the bursh border in vivo. The microvilli were isolated, subjected to sodium dodecyl sulphate/polyacrylamide-gel electrophoresis, and the [3H]glycoproteins detected by fluorography. Densitometer scans of the fluorograms of the [3H]galactoproteins showed that, under reducing …

Relationships between thaw rate, thaw bath time, and initial bath and final seminal temperature with coefficients of determination .99 and .97 were: bath time = −.01 + 220.25(1/thaw rate); initial bath temperature = final seminal temperature − 7.29 + 390.05(1/bath time). Ejaculates from 10 bulls were split and processed in egg yolk-citrate-glycerol, egg yolk-Tris-glycerol, and whole milk-glycerol. All semen was packaged and frozen in .5-ml French straws at −196°C. Sixteen thaw treatments consisted of factorial combinations of four final seminal temperatures and four thaw rates. Treatments were assessed by post-thaw acrosomal integrity after 3-h 37°C incubation. Seminal quality improved with …

On The Order-Theoretical Foundation Of A Theory Of Quasicompactly Generated Spaces Without Separation Axiom, Karl H. Hofmann, Jimmie D. Lawson Jan 1984

On The Order-Theoretical Foundation Of A Theory Of Quasicompactly Generated Spaces Without Separation Axiom, Karl H. Hofmann, Jimmie D. Lawson

Faculty Publications

A Hausdorff space X is said to be compactly generated (a /e-space) if and only if the open subsets V of X are precisely those subsets for which K n V is open in K for all compact subsets of K of X. We interpret this property as a duality property of the lattice 0{ X) of open sets of X, This view point allows the introduction of the concept of being quasicompactly generated for an arbitrary sober space X. The methods involve the duality theory of up-complete semilattices, and certain inverse limit constructions. In the process, we verify that …

A Note On The Critical Problem For Matroids, Takao Asano, Takao Nishizeki, Nobuji Saito, James Oxley

Faculty Publications

Let M be a matroid representable over GF(q) and S be a subset of its ground set. In this note we prove that S is maximal with the property that the critical exponent c(M|S; q) does not exceed k if and only if S is maximal with the property that c(M · S) ≤ k. In addition, we show that, for regular matroids, the corresponding result holds for the chromatic number. © 1984, Academic Press Inc. (London) Limited. All rights reserved.
