Sedimentary Fabrics In The Authigenic Carbonates From Bush Hill: Implication For Seabed Fluid Flow And Its Dynamic Signature, D. Feng, Duofu Chen, H. H. Roberts

Faculty Publications

Seep carbonates, the product of cold seep fluids mediated by microbial activity, archive information on seabed fluid flow and microbiological processes that led to their formation. Sedimentary fabrics are well developed in the authigenic carbonate from active seep sites at Bush Hill, Green Canyon Block 185 of the Gulf of Mexico. This authigenic carbonate has much lower carbon isotope values than typical marine cements and the carbonate is concluded to be derived from the oxidation of seeping petroleum. The authigenic fabrics commonly exhibit microbial or texturally unique sedimentary structures; e.g. framboidal pyrite, clotted microfabric and peloid, botryoidal aragonite, microfilament, and …

Dietary Resistant Starch Increases Hypothalamic Pomc Expression Independent Of Capsaicin-Sensitive Neurons In Rats, Li Shen Jan 2008

Dietary Resistant Starch Increases Hypothalamic Pomc Expression Independent Of Capsaicin-Sensitive Neurons In Rats, Li Shen

LSU Master's Theses

Resistant starch (RS) is fermentable dietary fiber. It has been shown that inclusion of resistant starch in the diet causes decreased body fat accumulation and altered gut hormone profile. Gut hormone has complex effect on neuropeptides’ expression in the brain hypothalamic area which is regarded as key factors in regulation of energy homeostasis. In this project, thereby, it is proposed that 1) the hypothalamic neuropeptide Y (NPY), agouti-related peptide (AgRP) and pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC) mRNA expression may be altered by RS feeding; 2) afferent vagal nerves might be involved in this process. Animal experiment was conducted to investigate the hypothesis. The …

Environmental Influences On Adherence To Self-Management Behaviors And Glycemic Control In African American Patients With Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, Brooke L. Barbera

LSU Master's Theses

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic illness effecting approximately 20.8 million individuals in the United States. Minorities are adversely affected, with age-adjusted prevalence 1.7 times higher in African Americans than Caucasians. Type 2 diabetes is significantly affected by behavioral and environmental risk factors, including the presence of co-occurring diseases (i.e., hypertension, hyperlipidemia), obesity, age, and lack of physical activity, and each of these risk factors is more prevalent among African Americans. The treatment of diabetes is largely self-managed, with patients and their families handling 95% of their own care. Adherence to the multi-component diabetic treatment regimen requires daily care, often occurring …

Listen, Sing And Learn: The Effects Of Musical Activities On Phonemic Awareness In The Foreign Language Classroom, Kelli White Jan 2008

Listen, Sing And Learn: The Effects Of Musical Activities On Phonemic Awareness In The Foreign Language Classroom, Kelli White

LSU Master's Theses

Traditionally, there has been a lack of emphasis placed on proper second language (L2) pronunciation in recent theoretical perspectives on foreign language pedagogy. Pronunciation is important because it is indicative of a learner’s level of phonemic awareness, an important component of second language acquisition. Inaccurate pronunciation (and therefore poor phonemic awareness) is often the result of a lack of training in this area due to the focus on grammar and syntax in many language classrooms. One often-neglected method of training students in L2 pronunciation discussed in some theoretical literature is the use of authentic materials in the form of musical …

Dosimetry Intercomparison Using A 35-Kev X-Ray Synchrotron Beam, Scott Oves

LSU Master's Theses

Significance: Photon activated Auger electron therapy utilizes a keV-ranged, monoenergetic x-ray beam, and radiobiological and animal experiments studying this therapy require accurate dosimetry techniques. However, there exist few dosimetry protocols for low-energy x-ray beams. This research intended to use the CAMD synchrotron as a source of monochromatic, 35-keV x-rays and test dosimetry techniques of film and ion chamber. The hypothesis of my research was that depth-dose measured in a PMMA phantom using an air-equivalent ionization chamber and radiochromic film dosimeters in a PMMA phantom irradiated by a 35-keV, monochromatic x-ray beam will agree to within 5% of each other and …

Wetland Mitigation Banks And The No-Net-Loss Requirement: An Evaluation Of The Section 404 Permit Program In Southeast Louisiana, Abbey Anne Tyrna

LSU Master's Theses

Section 404 of the Clean Water Act provides regulatory oversight for wetland conservation. One goal of the Section 404 program is to achieve a no-net-loss of the remaining wetland acres and functions. Wetland mitigation banks have been incorporated into wetland policy because of their potential advantage in achieving the no-net-loss requirements. This study analyzed four wetland mitigation banks with credits sold between 1991 and 2007 in southeastern Louisiana to determine if they were contributing to the goal of no-net-loss. The goal of no-net-loss is reached when there is complete compensation of wetland structure and function. The study area for this …

The Sbc-Tree: An Index For Run-Length Compressed Sequences, Mohamed Y. Eltabakh, Wing Kai Hon, Rahul Shah, Walid G. Aref, Jeffrey S. Vitter

Faculty Publications

Run-Length-Encoding (RLE) is a data compression technique that is used in various applications, e.g., time series, biological sequences, and multimedia databases. One of the main challenges is how to operate on (e.g., index, search, and retrieve) compressed data without decompressing it. In this paper, we introduce the String B-tree for Compressed sequences, termed the SBC-tree, for indexing and searching RLE-compressed sequences of arbitrary length. The SBC-tree is a two-level index structure based on the well-known String B-tree and a 3-sided range query structure [7]. The SBC-tree supports pattern matching queries such as substring matching, Prefix matching, and range search operations …

Quantification Of Tars And Particulates From A Pilot Scale, Downdraft Biomass Gasifier, Christopher Osita Akudo Jan 2008

Quantification Of Tars And Particulates From A Pilot Scale, Downdraft Biomass Gasifier, Christopher Osita Akudo

LSU Master's Theses

Alternative energy production through biomass gasification produces combustible gases, such as carbon monoxide, hydrogen, and methane. These gases can be used for generation of direct heat, electricity, or liquid fuels through the Fischer Tropsch process. However, a major limitation of the overall process is the purity of the generated synthesis gas. The tars and particulates generated in the gasification process constitute a major impediment to the commercial use of this technology because they may condense on valves, fittings, and therefore, hinder the smooth running of an engine. This research was aimed at developing a gas characterization and testing protocol, and …

Non-Industrial Private Forest Landowners And Us Home Center Retailers' Attitudes And Perceptions Of Forest Certification, Polwattage Kushil Perera Jan 2008

Non-Industrial Private Forest Landowners And Us Home Center Retailers' Attitudes And Perceptions Of Forest Certification, Polwattage Kushil Perera

LSU Master's Theses

The concept of forest certification, a relatively recent development in forestry, is based on the use of market-based incentives to encourage sustainable forest management practices. Since the majority of forests in US South are privately owned, certifying forests owned by non-industrial private forest (NIPF) landowners is an important issue. From the demand perspective of certification, pressure from non-governmental environmental organizations and consumer awareness has prompted major wood products retailers to state preferences for certified wood products. In the US, wood product demand in the retail home centers sector is second only to the home building industry. In addition, home center …

Synthesis Of Disubstituted Amino Acids And Peptide Inhibitors Of Amyloid Beta Aggregation, Gregory Todd Mccandless Jan 2008

Synthesis Of Disubstituted Amino Acids And Peptide Inhibitors Of Amyloid Beta Aggregation, Gregory Todd Mccandless

LSU Master's Theses

The aggregation process of amyloid beta from monomeric peptide to oligomers and fibrils is believed to be connected with the neurological disorder Alzheimer’s disease. The focus of this research is the synthesis of alpha, alpha-disubstituted amino acids and peptide inhibitors of amyloid beta aggregation. The inhibitors are designed to interrupt (or alter) this process by binding to amyloid beta’s central hydrophobic core region (residues 17-20, Leucine-Valine- Phenylalanine-Phenylalanine). Target specificity is achieved via self recognition by basing the inhibitors on the sequence in this region. The inclusion of disubstituted amino acids in the sequence of the inhibitors will provide a blocking …

Through a quantitative content analysis of torture on the television series 24 and an analysis of focus groups’ reactions to select episodes of 24 portraying torture in such scenarios, the study seeks to investigate the role of entertainment media …

Predictors Of Social Support Provided To Smokers, Diana Williams Stewart Jan 2008

Predictors Of Social Support Provided To Smokers, Diana Williams Stewart

LSU Master's Theses

Over 20% of adults in the U.S. presently smoke cigarettes. The highest rates (28.5%) are among 18-24 year-olds. Therefore, cessation interventions targeting young adults are needed. Cessation efforts and maintained abstinence in smokers have been associated with positive social support from others (i.e., “support persons”) throughout the cessation process. Support persons' attributions about smokers may affect the consistency and amount of support they provide to a smoker during a cessation attempt. The present investigation addressed the relationship between support persons' attribution style and the quality and quantity of support they provided to smokers. College students (N=244) were asked to identify …

Characterization Of The Lucinid Bivalve-Bacteria Symbiotic System: The Significance Of The Geochemical Habitat On Bacterial Symbiont Diversity And Phylogeny, Angela Marissa Green-Garcia

LSU Master's Theses

Extensive characterization of a single lucinid bivalve habitat was conducted to characterize the relationship between host bivalve and thiotrophic bacterial endosymbionts. For lucinids, the ecological and evolutionary relationships between hosts and endosymbionts are poorly understood. Reconstructing the evolutionary history of lucinid endosymbiosis, and the geologic significance of the association, has been hampered by insufficient knowledge of endosymbiont ecology and taxonomic diversity. Host organisms (Lucinisca nassula and Phacoides pectinatus) were collected from Cedar Keys, Florida, within the top 15-20 cm of the sediment in sea grass beds. PCR amplification and sequencing of bacterial 16S rRNA genes from lucinid gills and sediment …

Maternal Corticosterone Influences On Fear Responses In Offspring Of Quail Divergent Stress Response Lines, Kyndal A. Davis Jan 2008

Maternal Corticosterone Influences On Fear Responses In Offspring Of Quail Divergent Stress Response Lines, Kyndal A. Davis

LSU Master's Theses

Increased fearfulness has been associated with adrenocortical activation. Maternal corticosterone (B) treatment increases egg yolk B, and elevated B in ovo enhances chick avoidance of humans. Quail selected for exaggerated (high stress, HS) as opposed to reduced (low stress, LS) plasma B response to stress are more fearful, and more B is found in the egg yolks of HS than LS hens. Therefore, the underlying fearfulness (tonic immobility, TI) and timidity (hole-in-the-wall box, HWB, emergence) responses were assessed in chicks hatched from eggs of LS and HS hens implanted with silastic tubes containing no B (CON) or B (B-IMPLANT) during …
