The Representation Of Disability In The Music Of Alfred Hitchcock Films, John T. Dunn
The Representation Of Disability In The Music Of Alfred Hitchcock Films, John T. Dunn
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Several of Alfred Hitchcock’s movies feature characters with disabilities. Often, these characters are protagonists, and Hitchcock systematically manipulates his audiences to identify with these characters through the editing process, sound effects, and music. This dissertation will analyze the ways music represents various disabilities in three Hitchcock films. Vertigo (1958) addresses obsession and phobia as its main themes, whereas Psycho (1960) investigates obsession and madness. Finally, The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956) explores muteness, hysteria, and identity in the context of two pieces of diegetic music. Hitchcock made careful notes for the music in his films; songs represent disability through …

Relationship Between Metabolic By-Products And Nervous System Failure/Fatigue, Tyler Mitchell Farney
Relationship Between Metabolic By-Products And Nervous System Failure/Fatigue, Tyler Mitchell Farney
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Fatigue has generally been defined as an acute impairment of exercise/sport performance that includes both an increase in the perceived effort necessary to exert a desired force or power output, and the inability to produce the desired force or power output. The majority of research to date looking at fatigue has focused upon substrate utilization, however, what is relatively unknown is the contribution the nervous system has upon fatigue. Therefore, the purpose of this dissertation was to investigate potential mechanisms that relate to neural fatigue. An additional purpose was to determine if there were any relationships between metabolic by-products and …

Identification And Characterization Of A Relish-Type Nf-Kb, Dvrelish In Dermacentor Variabilis, The American Dog Tick, Victoria Irene Verhoeve
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Ticks are important worldwide as vectors of bacteria, viruses, and parasites. Pathogenic and non-pathogenic Spotted fever group (SFG) Rickettsia are maintained and transmitted by ticks with specific hard tick-Rickettsia pairings evident in nature. The pathogenic SFG Rickettsia rickettsii is transmitted by the hard tick Dermacentor variabilis. In response to infection, D. variabilis is known differentially respond to SFG Rickettsia infection. The mechanisms of differential immune induction are currently unknown, and are likely involved in the establishment of specific tick-SFG Rickettsia pairings. It was hypothesized that the level of response by D. variabilis to SFG Rickettsia occurs in a species-specific manner, …
Relational Red Flags: Detecting Undesirable Qualities In Initial Romantic Encounters, Richard C. White
Relational Red Flags: Detecting Undesirable Qualities In Initial Romantic Encounters, Richard C. White
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation extends the work of Signal Detection Theory (SDT) (Green & Swets, 1966; Swets, 1964) in the social sciences by applying it to romantic relationships, specifically initial romantic encounters (i.e. formal or informal first few dates, or random, chance encounters). The term relational red flag is put forth to describe the detection of signals in initial romantic encounters that may be perceived as any undesirable quality, which can be a characteristic, behavior, state, or trait that a person would not want in a potential romantic partner. These undesirable qualities can be costly to a healthy, stable relationship because they …
Walter Lippmann's Search For A Sustainable Liberalism, Eric Schmidt
Walter Lippmann's Search For A Sustainable Liberalism, Eric Schmidt
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Walter Lippmann’s intellectual journey represents the journey of American liberalism in the 20th century: an attempted return from infatuation with the progressive ideals of inevitable historical development and scientific progress to the stability of human rights and freedom. America’s path to defining its brand of liberalism finds expression in the philosophical works of Lippmann, who was at the center of this struggle. Lippmann was a defender of the liberal democratic state whose value as a thinker derives from his attempt to understand the problem of political freedom (are people competent to self-rule in a mass democracy?) throughout this critical time …

Rapid Cooling Of Eastern Oysters (Crassostrea Virginica) Using An On-Board Icing Unit To Slow The Growth Of Vibrio Vulnificus And Vibrio Parahaemolyticus, Melody Amber Thomas
LSU Master's Theses
Oyster harvesting is a major industry along the Eastern and Gulf coasts of the United States. Eastern oysters (Crassostrea virginica) spawn when the waters start to warm between May and October in the Gulf of Mexico. The warmer temperature creates a problem with an increase of bacteria. The two major bacteria affecting the oyster industry are Vibrio vulnificus and Vibrio parahaemolyticus. These bacteria are the leading causes of seafood-borne illnesses in the United States. This increase of V. vulnificus and V. parahaemolyticus has led to stricter time/temperature requirements for harvesting oysters. The regulations are not plausible for smaller vessels too …

Rickettsia Felis, Transmission Mechanisms Of An Emerging Flea-Borne Rickettsiosis, Lisa Diane Brown
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Rickettsia felis is an emerging insect-borne rickettsial pathogen and the causative agent of flea-borne spotted fever. First described as a human pathogen from the United States in 1991, R. felis is now identified throughout the world and considered a common cause of fever in Africa. The cosmopolitan distribution of this pathogen is credited to the equally widespread occurrence of cat fleas (Ctenocephalides felis), the primary vector and reservoir of R. felis. Additionally, R. felis has been identified in other hematophagous arthropods (including numerous species of fleas, ticks, mosquitoes, and mites). Most transmission cycles of pathogenic Rickettsia include transovarial and transstadial …

LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Aflatoxins are toxic and potent carcinogenic metabolites produced by Aspergillus flavus and A. parasiticus. Aflatoxins can contaminate cottonseed under conducive environmental conditions. Much success has been achieved by the application of atoxigenic strains of A. flavus for controlling aflatoxin contamination in cotton, peanut and maize. Development of aflatoxin-resistant cultivars overexpressing resistance-associated genes and/or knocking down aflatoxin biosynthesis of A. flavus could be an effective strategy for controlling aflatoxin contamination in cotton. In this study, differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified in response to infection with both toxigenic and atoxigenic strains of A. flavus pericarp and seed of cotton through genome-wide …

Peg3 Functions As A Repressor For Its Downstream Genes, An Ye
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Paternally expressed gene 3 (Peg3) is an imprinted gene that encodes a protein with twelve C2H2 zinc finger domains. Thus, PEG3 protein is predicted to serve as a transcription factor that may regulate other gene expression. Chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP) experiment revealed a list of genes that are bound by PEG3, supporting PEG3 is a DNA-binding protein. Genome wide expression analysis using wild type and Peg3 knockout mouse models further suggested that a large number of genes were up-regulated in Peg3 knockout model, including imprinted genes and some tissue-specific genes, suggesting that PEG3 may mainly function as a repressor for its …

Synthesis Of Functional Polypeptides And Development Of New Synthetic Strategies Toward Polypeptides, Jinbao Cao
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The objective of this work is to develop a new synthetic strategy for synthesizing advanced functional polypeptides or polypeptides in general. Polypeptides are amino acids based polymers with appealing properties for different applications. One of the key challenges in polypeptide research is the synthesis of functional polypeptides under mild conditions. We developed a system based on ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of N-thiocarboxyanhydrosulfides (NTAs) to synthesize polypeptides with wide range of molecular weights under mild conditions. Owing to NTAs’ good stability, our system serves as an excellent alternative to the traditional ROP of N-carboxyanhydrides (NCA). In Chapter 1, the fundamental knowledge and …

Molecularly Imprinted Polymers For Enantiomer Separations And Biomolecular Sensors, Britney Lyn Hebert
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Molecularly Imprinted Polymers (MIPs) encompass a wide range of applications by changing the different components, e.g. the template, crosslinker or functional monomers. Of interest among these different applications are separations and sensors. Separations by MIPs traditionally use a chiral pure template but in some cases that chiral pure template may not be available for imprinting. Using chiral (N-α-bismethacyloyl-L-alanine) and achiral (N,O-bisacrylamide ethanolamine) crosslinkers we investigated imprinting of scalemic and racemic template mixtures of Boc-tyrosine enantiomers. The achiral and chiral crosslinkers yielded similar results for the partial separation of enantiomers by scalemic imprinted polymers because separation and recognition are not dependent …

"Miss" Communication: Women Navigating The Crossroads Of The Journalism And Mass Communication Industry And Academia, Aariel Roxanne Charbonnet
"Miss" Communication: Women Navigating The Crossroads Of The Journalism And Mass Communication Industry And Academia, Aariel Roxanne Charbonnet
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This qualitative study explores the career transitions of women from the mass communication industry to academia using Schlossberg’s (1984) theory of transition. In addition to the job demands as academics and administrators, mass communication leaders must satisfy the demands of the professional communities their schools serve. This calls for a more practical curriculum with media and communication professionals serving as faculty members. For women, the demands appear to have another layer, as women are leaving the journalism industry earlier than men (Willnat & Weaver, 2014). This begs the following questions: Why are women leaving the industry? What are the experiences …
