This exploratory, descriptive study of the social environments of two nursing homes and of the styles of participation that old residents develop has been guided by the symbolic interactionist premise that people act toward things on the basis of the meanings these things have for them. Participant observation was the primary data gathering technique, but two survey type instruments were also used. The goals of the study were to make contributions to (1) the building of grounded, substantive theory in social gerontology; (2) improving data gathering techniques appropriate for studies of old people; and (3) solving practical problems in nursing …

This study employed behavioral strategies of weight control with obese adolescents. Programs which modified eating habits (Eating Habits) and exercise habits (Exercise) and a combination of the two programs (Eating Habits and Exercise) were compared with a control group (Supportive Group) and a Drop Out Group. Program compliance was assessed and the utility of predictor instruments was studied. The treatment program lasted 12 weeks with seven follow-up meetings over a nine month period. The Eating Habits condition was designed to modify maladaptive eating habits using behavioral techniques. The Exercise condition consisted of establishing exercise programs for individual subjects. An analysis of the cytoplasmic incompatibility system in Culex pipiens has been made. Both normal and antibiotic-resistant strains have been established using erythromycin, chloramphenicol and tetracycline. A complete genetic analysis has been made using all possible reciprocal crosses. Crosses between the normal strains show unidirectional compatibility. The genetic crosses involving the tetracycline-resistant strain show a reversal of the direction of compatibility when compared with those involving the untreated parental strain. Erythromycin and chloramphenicol-resistant strains exhibited no such change in direction of compatibility when compared with their respective untreated parental strains. Exceptional crossing relationships between chloramphenicol and tetracycline-resistant strains were found. …

The responses of soybeans {Glycine max (L.) Merr. 'Bragg'} and red rice (Oryza sativa L. 'Strawhulled') to postemergence applications of mefluidide {N-{2,4-dimethyl-5-{{(trifluoromethyl)=sulfonyl}amino}phenyl}acetamide} and bentazon {3-isopropyl-1H-2,1,3-benzothiadiazin-4(3H)-one 2,2-dioxide} alone and in combinations were evaluated in greenhouse studies. Soybeans and red rice were tolerant to bentazon, but their heights were reduced by mefluidide. When these two herbicides were combined, soybeans were not injured at any tested rates, but a synergistic interaction occurred that killed red rice. The changes in degradation, uptake, translocation, metabolism, and loss of these two herbicides due to combinations with each other were studied in order to establish the basis …

Biotelemetry was used to study thermal and spatial relationships in Nerodia fasciata confluens, N. c. cyclopion, and N. r. rhombifera. Twenty snakes were monitored between April 1978 and September 1979 in Ascension Parish, Louisiana. Laboratory-determined preferred temperature ranges were compared to environmental temperatures from air, soil, and water to predict thermally optimum microhabitats. Comparison of observed and predicted microhabitats for each observation showed that N. fasciata was found more frequently in the thermally optimum microhabitat than were N. cyclopion and N. rhombifera. Nerodia cyclopion consistently showed thermal nonconformity by altering the relationship between body (BT) and ambient (AT) temperatures so …

Soil erosion, soil chemistry, and understory vegetation were studied after four regeneration cutting methods--clearcut, seed-tree, shelterwood, and selection--were applied to mature loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) stands at two locations in southeastern Louisiana. Treatment plots were 8 ha in size, and each treatment was replicated twice at each location. Soil erosion on slopes was measured from permanent stakes located at the top, middle, and bottom on each of six slopes within each plot. Adult intermolt blue crabs (Callinectes sapidus Rathbun) were stepwise acclimated to salinity at 22-25(DEGREES)C. Respiratory and circulatory responses were investigated in steady state salinity (5, 10, 20 and 30('o)/oo), diurnally fluctuating salinity (30-10-30('o)/oo, 10-30-10('o)/oo), and during 24-h exposure to water-soluble naphthalene at 0, 37.5% (0.9 ppm) and 75% (1.8 ppm) of the 24-h TL(,m) in a flow through system at 10 and 30('o)/ooS. Four trials using chicks were conducted to measure the metabolizable energy (ME) of fats, oils and combinations of these using a relatively fat free basal diet. The objective was to determine if ME values for fats and oils could be measured which did not exceed their gross energy values. The effects of fecal drying temperature on ME, level of fat or oil inclusion on ME, reference source (glucose or soybean oil) and response of sex on ME were also studied. A mathematical model of a Vacuum Pan Sugar Crystallizer is developed. This mathematical model is based on the fundamentals of the physics of two-phase flow. Because of the complexity of the model, the time dependent solution is accomplished using numerical methods designed to be executed by a digital computer. Bracts in upland cotton, Gossypium hirsutum L., have been implicated in byssionosis, a lung disorder associated with textile mill workers. Quantitative genetic studies were conducted to determine the inheritance of bract surface area and ratio of bract size/lint weight per boll. A diallel analysis was performed using seven parents and their 21 F(,1) and F(,2) populations. The parents were specifically chosen to represent a range of bract sizes, thus inferences were only made to the material included in this study. Anaerobic digestion of an alkaline food waste for methane production was investigated. The waste generated by potato processing contained significant quantities of carbohydrate degradation products and sodium carbonate. Anaerobic digestion was determined to be a reliable process for waste treatment and methane production. The high sodium levels did not inhibit anaerobic digestion at a substrate concentration of 1.0 wt % alkaline peel solids. Single and two-stage (separate acid, methane stages) anaerobic digestion systems were studied. The Tunica Hills region is located in West Feliciana Parish, Louisiana and north into Wilkinson County, Mississippi. It is characterized by hills 60-122 m above sea level that are composed of loess deposits. A mixed mesophytic forest association dominated by magnolia, holly and beech occurs here. A 3 1/2 year study was instituted to examine the butterfly and skipper species of this area. Data from the Southern Regional Dairy Cattle Breeding project (S-49) were analyzed by least square methods to evaluate genetic and environmental effects upon body weight and body weight gain. Data consisted of records on 1,352 purebred Ayrshire (A), Brown Swiss (S), Holstein (H) and Jersey (J) and 1,224 crossbred females. Sixty-one different major breed combinations were represented. Breed groups (PLB) represented proportion of a large breed (Brown Swiss and Holstein). The highest most probable numbers (MPNs) of methanogens (1.18 x 10('6) cells per 100 g sediment, dry weight) and sulfate-reducers (0.31 x 10('6) cells per 100 g sediment, dry weight) in unstable, gas-rich, Mississippi River delta sediments occurred together in samples taken 0.2m below the sediment-water interface. The presence of sulfate-reducers was directly related to dissolved sulfate in the interstitial water. Dissolved methane in the sediments was inversely related to the presence of sulfate-reducing bacteria. Methanogens and sulfate-reducers were recovered from maximum depths of 29.3 and 75.0 m, respectively. Two horizons of dissolved sulfate, with peaks of sulfate-reducer MPNs, indicated …

All commercial cotton varieties are susceptible to the reniform nematode (RN), Rotylenchulus reniformis Linford & Oliveira 1940. The parasites cause 30-60% crop loss in infested fields. Resistant varieties, if found, offer the best control for this nematode. The objective of this research was to identify RN resistant germplasm in cotton species and related plants, and to investigate host parasite relationships. In the sea urchin egg, metabolic activation, DNA synthesis and the chromosome cycle can be induced with parthenogenic activators (NH(,4)Cl or procaine) although no spontaneous cleavage will occur. To determine the effects of these agents on other cell cycle events, eggs from four species of sea urchins were activated with NH(,4)Cl or procaine and then fertilized at different times of the chromosome cycle. These eggs show a decrease in the time to first cleavage which is apparently coupled to the parthenogenecally induced chromosome cycle. Soybean cultivars were evaluated during two consecutive years for field resistance to black root rot (BRR) caused by Cylindrocladium crotalariae. Evaluations were conducted in a naturally infested field with a 2-year history of BRR incidence. Densities of microsclerotia (ms) were measured at planting by a soil elutriation technique. Disease classes were based on a 0-4 scale of foliage symptoms (0 = no symptoms, 4 = 76-100 percent of leaves per plant displaying symptoms). The owner/manager of each firm was questioned at length about the growth of his company. Particular attention was given to identifying the relative stage of development of each firm. This was determined by analyzing the strategic characteristics identified in the literature as descriptive of stages of development. The effect of glyphosate on immature internodal tissue of three sugarcane varieties was examined. Sucrose content (mg/g dry wt) increased after treatment application throughout the 7 week period of sampling in the experiment in all varieties examined. Increases in sucrose percent and commercially recoverable sugar per ton (CRS/T) determined by whole stalk analysis were observed in NCo 310 and CP 61-37 4 weeks after glyphosate application. A greater percent increase in sucrose content of immature internodal tissues over control than that observed by whole stalk analysis was noted at this time. This study provides an inventory of the prime agricultural lands of Louisiana and analyzes the process of urban encroachment onto these productive soils. The study also discusses the merits of prime agricultural land preservation and reviews various policies and programs directed toward that end. Louisiana has about 12.5 million acres (43 percent of total acreage) of prime agricultural land. On a parish basis, acreages of prime land range from a high of 536,303 acres in Calcasieu to a low of 14,332 acres in Orleans parish. Male sugarcane borer, Diatraea saccharalis (F.), larvae at egg hatch were equal in weight to females, but on artificial diet, pupated in less time and achieved a smaller larval maximum and 1 day old pupal weight. The peak period for egg hatch and ecdysis was within a few hours after lights-on, and pupation occurred at random. Males completed larval development in 5 and 6 stadia and females in 6 stadia. Calea, a large genus in the Asteraceae, tribe Heliantheae, consists of mostly shrubs that occur throughout the Neotropics. Robinson and Greenman's treatment of the Mexican and Central American species has remained the definitive study of Calea for this area since 1896. Recent studies, including the present one, have greatly modified their earlier treatment. Eleutherascus is an enigmatic ascomycete genus with some structural features common to both the Eurotiales and Pezizales. It lacks a peridium and paraphyses and typically produces an ascocarp consisting of only one or two asci and some sterile hyphae. The life cycle of E. peruvianus was studied by electron and optical microscopy. The principle events that culminate in ascospore production and germination are described and compared to their equivalents in some purportedly related species. The irregular terpene, 2,6,9,13-tetramethyl-6-vinyl-tetradeca-2,8,12-trien-7-one (18), and the terpenoid, 1-phenyl-2,6-dimethyl-2-vinyl-hept-5-en-1-one (19) were synthesized by the Continuous Flow Reformatsky method using geranoyl chloride and benzoyl chloride, respectively. Geranyl bromide was used to generate the required organo-zinc adduct. Citral and geranyl bromide produced 3,6,9,13-tetramethyl-9-vinyl-tetradeca-3,7,12-trien-6-ol (17) by this method. Attempts to isomerize 17 to 2,6,9,13-tetramethyl-6-vinyl-tetradeca-2,8,12-trien-7-ol failed. It is postulated that 17 is more stable due to steric compression around the quaternary carbon. Baldcypress (Taxodium distichum L. Rich.) is a desirable species for tree ring studies due to its longevity, resistance to decay, and the statistical characteristics of the ring record (Bowers, 1973). This investigation endeavors to determine: (1) the type and number of samples needed for such studies; (2) the values of x-ray densitometry analysis with the species; (3) the usefulness of the data for delineating differences in swamp sites which differ in length of flooding and if these differences could affect wood quality; and (4) the appropriateness of the data from disturbed swamp sites in south Louisiana to dendroclimatic studies.
