An Analysis Of The Trematode Fauna Of Two Intercontinental Migrants: Tringa Solitaria And Calidris Melanotos (Aves: Charadriiformes) (Ecuador, Louisiana, South Dakota, Canada)., Erika Jansic Tallman
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
One hundred ninety-seven Solitary Sandpipers, Tringa solitaria, and 213 Pectoral Sandpipers, Calidris melanotos, were examined for trematodes. Specimens were taken from the hosts' winter range in Ecuador, South America, during the fall and spring migrations from Louisiana and South Dakota in the United States, and from the breeding grounds of the Solitary Sandpiper in Ontario, Canada. The 13 species of trematodes recorded from the shorebirds included 5 that were common to both species of shorebirds: Tanaisia fedtschnkoi, Cyclocoelum obscurum, Paramonostomum sp., Leucochloridium variae, and Zonorchis microrochis. Of the remaining 8 species, Cyclocoelum brasilianum, Plagiorchis maculosus, Stephanoprora denticulata, and Eurytrema lubens …
Deltaic Sedimentation In Eastern Atchafalaya Bay, Louisiana., Ivor Llewellyn Van Heerden
Deltaic Sedimentation In Eastern Atchafalaya Bay, Louisiana., Ivor Llewellyn Van Heerden
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A new Mississippi delta--now in the subaerial growth phase--is building in Atchafalaya Bay, south-central Louisiana, as the result of a natural upstream di-version. Early studies of this event documented gross accretion in Atchafalaya Bay. The present study focuses on subaerial delta lobe responses, stratigraphic development, and sedimentation processes that are incorporated into a model for delta growth. A sedimentological research program undertaken in the eastern half of the Atchafalaya delta has shown that two distinct stages of subaerial delta response are recognizable. The first (younger) re-sponse consists of channel extension, bifurcation, and development of sinuous overbank channels. A latter, more …
Social And Demographic Factors Influencing Job Mobility Aspirations In An Industrializing Rural Community., James Augustine Butler Jr
Social And Demographic Factors Influencing Job Mobility Aspirations In An Industrializing Rural Community., James Augustine Butler Jr
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The rapid industrialization of nonmetropolitan areas and small towns has been a relatively recent phenomenon. The economic impact of such development has been well documented. However, not much is known about the social effects of industrial development in rural communities--particularly as related to attitudes of the indigenous population. The objective of this study was to determine the association between several independent variables (type of employment, age, sex, race, education, and income) and job mobility aspirations of adult employees in industry and others in the surrounding area. Job mobility aspirations in this study were defined by a scale comprised of eight …
The Methodological Foundations Of Law And Economics., Will Carrington Heath
The Methodological Foundations Of Law And Economics., Will Carrington Heath
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Today there is a burgeoning "new" law and economics literature which extends the application of economic principles virtually across the board. The essence of the "new" law and economics is value (or wealth) maximization, which means exploiting economic resources in such a way that value--human satisfaction as measured by willingness and ability to pay--is maximized. Value maximization has become essential in both explanative and reformative analyses of the law. This new science of law is not without its critics. They include economists, especially those of the Austrian and American Institutionalist schools, as well as various legal theorists and practitioners not …
The Effects Of Acute Dehydration On The Anaerobic Threshold During Incremental Cycle Ergometer Exercise., Penelope England
The Effects Of Acute Dehydration On The Anaerobic Threshold During Incremental Cycle Ergometer Exercise., Penelope England
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Much of the previous research concerning dehydration and performance has centered around prolonged submaximal work while seemingly little attention has been focused upon short term incremental exercise. Numerous investigators have suggested that dehydration may alter carbohydrate metabolism in muscle. Theoretically, altered glycolytic flux in exercising muscle could result in a change in the rate of blood lactate (La) accumulation, and thus shift the anaerobic threshold. Anaerobic threshold (AT(,La)) has been formally defined as the oxygen uptake (V(,O(,2))) at which there is a systematic increase in blood La. Additionally, the AT(,La) has been estimated from a nonlinear increase in expired ventilation …

Survival Of Vibrio Cholerae, Biotype E1 Tor, Serotype Inaba In Seafoods., Arthur Hinton Jr
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The D values of Vibrio cholerae in oyster and shrimp meat homogenate were determined at 49(DEGREES), 54(DEGREES), 60(DEGREES), 66(DEGREES), 71(DEGREES), 77(DEGREES), and 82(DEGREES)C. In oyster homogenates, the D values in minutes were 4.7 at 49(DEGREES)C, < 0.35 at 54(DEGREES)C, < 0.35 at 60(DEGREES)C, < 0.33 at 66(DEGREES)C, < 0.30 at 71(DEGREES)C, < 0.29 at 77(DEGREES)C, and < 0.24 at 82(DEGREES)C. In shrimp homogenates, the D values in minutes were 9.17 at 49(DEGREES)C, < 0.43 at 54(DEGREES)C, < 0.39 at 60(DEGREES)C, < 0.32 at 66(DEGREES)C, < 0.31 at 71(DEGREES)C, < 0.30 at 77(DEGREES), and < 0.28 at 82(DEGREES)C. Whole oysters, inoculated with 10('6) V. cholerae/gram, were cooked in boiling water (100(DEGREES)C) or in hot oil (191(DEGREES)C) for one minute. Whole shrimp, inoculated with 10('6) V. cholerae were cooked in boiling water (100(DEGREES)C) or in steam (100(DEGREES)C) for 10 minutes. Vibrio cholerae was not isolated from the cooked oysters or shrimp. Sterile and unsterile shrimp, oyster, crab, and crayfish meat homogenates were inoculated with 10('7) V. cholerae/g. The homogenates were treated with 0, 25, 50, or 100 krad and stored at 4(DEGREES), 0(DEGREES), or -8(DEGREES)C for 21 days. No V. cholerae were isolated from any of the homogenates treated with 100 krad. Vibrio cholerae was able to survive longer in the sterile oyster, crab and crayfish homogenates stored at 4(DEGREES) and 0(DEGREES)C than in the unsterile homogenates stored at the same temperatures. The organism was able to survive longer in the unsterile shrimp homogenates stored at 4(DEGREES) and 0(DEGREES)C than in the sterile homogenates stored at the same temperature. At -8(DEGREES)C, survival time was usually longer in the unsterile seafood homogenates than in the sterile seafood homogenates stored at -8(DEGREES)C. Due to the retardation of competitive inhibition the organism was usually able to survive longer in the unsterile homogenates stored at -8(DEGREES)C than in the unsterile homogenates stored at 4(DEGREES) or 0(DEGREES)C.

The Relationship Between Fibrinolytic Capacity And Metabolic Control In Insulin-Dependent Diabetes Mellitus., William Guyton Hornsby Jr
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between fibrinolytic capacity and metabolic control in insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus. Testing protocol was explained and informed consent was obtained from 26 insulin-dependent diabetics and 20 healthy controls who agreed to serve as subjects. Fibrinolytic capacity (FC) was measured as the change in euglobulin lysis time produced by 10 min of venous occlusion with a sphygmomanometer cuff inflated around the upper arm at a pressure midway between systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Metabolic control was evaluated by measurement of hemoglobin A1 (HbA1) using a minicolumn chromatographic technique. Fasting glucose (GLU), cholesterol …

Some Effects Of Calcium On Growth, Yield And Mineral Content Of Pepper (Capsicum Annuum L.)., Patrick Emeka Igbokwe
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Two different greenhouse experiments were conducted to determine the effects of sources and levels of Ca on the growth, yield and mineral contents of bell pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) cv. 'Keystone Resistant Giant #4' grown on Cahaba silt loam. The CaCO(,3) produced plants that had significantly better growth, greater yield and higher nutrient uptake than did the control plants during the spring, summer and fall tests. Quality of growth, earliness of flowering and fruit development were better during the fall plantings for all treatments. The Ca(NO(,3))(,2) favored more vegetative growth on short internodes during the summer planting. Although a general …

Inflammation And Leukocyte Responses Induced By Subcutaneous Turpentine Inoculation Of Young Alligator Mississippiensis., Margarita Rosa Mateo
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Turpentine-induced skin reactions in young Alligator mississippiensis kept at 25(DEGREES)C were employed to study reptile inflammatory response. Skin lesions, harvested at intervals from 4 hours to 30 days post-inoculation exhibited no gross changes until day 24-26, when superficial skin necrosis and sloughing occurred. Early responses of congestion and dermal edema (4-8 hours) were seen by light microscopy, followed by necrosis and granulocyte migration (1-3 days). There was later predominance of monocytic cells, including vacuolated macrophages (7 days - 30 days). At 30 days post-inoculation, central dermal zones of necrotic debris were surrounded by palisades of vacuolated multinucleated giant cells and …

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Six serial passages of a cell-adapted strain of EIAV were conducted in Shetland ponies. The 16 recipient ponies became agar-gel immunodiffusion test positive by 25 days after inoculation, and it was observed that the virulence of this cell-adapted strain increased through the successive passages. Clinical signs were closely monitored and recorded, and macroscopic as well as microscopic lesions of EIA were also recorded and evaluated. The effect of EIAV upon blood components was determined after several of the febrile episodes, and the effect of the immunosuppressant dexamethasone on infected ponies were also studied. EIAV was isolated in fetal equine kidney …
Pulmonary Dynamics, Pharmacokinetics And Receptor Binding Of 3-Methylindole In Equidae., David E. Thomas
Pulmonary Dynamics, Pharmacokinetics And Receptor Binding Of 3-Methylindole In Equidae., David E. Thomas
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The pulmonary dynamics, pharamacokinetics and receptor binding of 3-methylindole (3MI) were determined in Equidae. Changes in pulmonary dynamics for the 10 and 20 mg/kg body weight dosages of 3MI from 0 to 48 hours after dosing were determined by whole body plethysmography. Parameters for respiratory rate, minute volume, thoracic gas volume, expiratory/inspiratory time ratio, thoracic gas volume, inspiratory and expiratory flow, and expiratory airway resistance were not significantly different from the time 0 control reading. Pooled means of tidal volume increased significantly (P < 0.05) at 6, 8 and 10 hours after dosing. Significant increases (P < 0.05) in inspiratory airway resistance were observed at the 6, 10, 24 and 48 hour readings. These changes were beginning to reverse within 48 hours after dosing. The pharmacokinetics plasma-concentration profiles for 3MI (10 and 20 mg/kg) in horses were best represented by a two-compartment open model with first order absorption as determined by non-linear least squares regression analysis. Absorption of 3MI at both dosages was rapid. Determinations of the post-distribution half life, total clearance, and area-under-curve of the plasma-concentration profile suggested the presence of non-linear or dose-dependent kinetics for 3MI in horses. Analysis of the structure activity relationships of 3MI and some of its known metabolites suggest that these compounds may bind muscarinic receptors in the lung. {('3)H}-QNB (quinudidinyl benzylate) binds to membranes of rate lung, pony lung and rat brain in a manner indicating selective interaction with a muscarinic receptor. Pharmacological potencies of various muscarinic antagonists and agonists as determined by drug inhibition curves in the presence of 100uM {('3)H}-QNB resembled those observed for other tissues. 3MI and its metabolite ortho-aminoacetophenone (OAAP) were observed to have low potency for binding to muscarinic receptors. From these data, it appears that 3MI and OAAP may interact at either a peripheral site on the receptor macromolecule or affect membrane associated components of the receptor site. These interactions may be the cause of the increased level of bronchomotor tone and resulting increased airway resistance observed in horses after administration of 3MI.
Molecular Cloning Of Sugarcane Mosaic Virus Complementary-Dna: Use As A Probe For The Detection Of Virus Infection And Viral-Rnas., Roy Chester French
Molecular Cloning Of Sugarcane Mosaic Virus Complementary-Dna: Use As A Probe For The Detection Of Virus Infection And Viral-Rnas., Roy Chester French
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
DNA complementary (cDNA) to the RNA genome of sugarcane mosaic virus strain H (SCMV-H) was synthesized using avian myeloblastosis virus reverse transcriptase and oligo(dT) as primer. Second strand synthesis used the same enzyme and oligo(dG) primer after tailing the first strand with oligo(dC). Double-stranded cDNA was inserted into the PstI site of plasmid pBR322 by the G-C tailing method and cloned in Esherichia coli HB101. Twenty recombinant clones containing SCMV-H sequences were obtained, but most had inserts less than 500 base pairs (0.5 kbp). Two plasmids, S47-6 and S47-20, however, had larger inserts of 1.2 kbp and 2.7 kbp, respectively …
The Effect Of Zinc Nutriture On Prostaglandin Synthesis And Fatty Acid Composition In Rat Testes., Prithiva Chanmugam
The Effect Of Zinc Nutriture On Prostaglandin Synthesis And Fatty Acid Composition In Rat Testes., Prithiva Chanmugam
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
To determine if zinc affects prostaglandin synthesis in the rat testis, one group of rats was fed a zinc deficient (< 1 ppm) diet and two control groups were pair fed and ad lib fed a zinc sufficient (100 ppm) diet. The diets of half the zinc deficient and pair fed rats were supplemented with docosapentaenoic acid to determine if low levels of this acid, observed in the testes of zinc deficient rats, was responsible for some of the symptoms of zinc deficiency in the testis. In the tunica, 6-keto-PGF(,1(alpha)) and PGE(,2) levels (ng/gm) were lower in zinc deficient rats compared to controls, but there was no difference when PG concentration was expressed as ng/mg protein. In the testis parenchyma, zinc deficient rats had higher levels of PGs, probably due to increased levels of the precursor, arachidonic acid. PG synthesis was greater in tunica compared to parenchyma and in both tissues 6-keto-PGF(,1(alpha)) levels were much higher than those of PGE(,2). Decosapentaenoic acid supplementation had no effect on testis weight, PGs or sperm counts. It also had no effect on 22:5(omega)6 concentration in testes lipids implying that the level of supplementation was too low to have an effect, if any, on the testes. It was concluded that zinc affects PG levels in the testes, but only indirectly, through an effect on protein and fatty acid levels. It was also concluded that PGI(,2) was the major PG produced by the testis and that PG synthesis was an important function of the tunica.

Statistical Mechanics Of Conformational Transitions In Biopolymers., Rachid Charbel Maroun
Statistical Mechanics Of Conformational Transitions In Biopolymers., Rachid Charbel Maroun
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Recently extended theoretical methods and existent experimental methods have been employed for the determination of conformational-dependent properties of polymers of biological interest like synthetic polyamino acids, natural polypeptides and proteins. Calculation of theoretical properties, like for example average helical content and average helical length, as derived from the configuration partition function has been achieved by making use of the Rotational Isomeric State approximation through modifications and innovations of a nearest-neighbor interaction version of the Zimm-Bragg model of helix-coil transitions as presented in a matrix format suitable for use in an electronic computer. The scope of the theory allows for the …

Biological, Ecological, And Morphological Investigations Of The Rice Water Weevil, Lissorhoptrus Oryzophilus Kuschel, On Two Rice Genotypes., Gary Leonard Cave
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The rice water weevil, Lissorhoptrus oryzophilus Kuschel, is the most important insect pest of rice, Oryza sativa (L.), in the United States. Although this insect has been associated with O. sativa since the introduction of this plant species into the United States in 1685, some aspects of its biology remain obscure. Larvae of L. oryzophilus have four instars, based on measurements of head-capsule widths of field-collected larvae in 1981 and 1982. The head-capsule widths of each instar were: I, 0.14 to 0.18 mm; II, 0.20 to 0.26 mm; III, 0.28 to 0.38 mm; IV, 0.40 to 0.60 mm. Further studies …

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of varying intensities of recovery exercise on the level of blood lactate after a short, supramaximal exercise bout. Seven males were advised of the testing protocol and consented to serve as subjects. All subjects performed an oxygen cost of cycling test and maximal oxygen uptake (VO(,2)(' )max) test prior to the commencement of the recovery tests. The subjects then performed one of four treatments on separate days with 1-4 days of rest between tests. Preceding each treatment the subjects cycled at a workload corresponding to 150% of VO(,2)(' )max for …
Characterization And Bioavailability Of Alfalfa Leaf Protein Concentrate., Sirous Kashefi
Characterization And Bioavailability Of Alfalfa Leaf Protein Concentrate., Sirous Kashefi
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Pressed alfalfa juice at pH 8.5 was heated (60(DEGREES)C) and centrifuged to produce a brown solution. This solution was further heated (80(DEGREES)C) at pH 4.0, centrifuged, and freeze-dried to produce a light tan powder. Tetrahymena pyriformis W. was used to test quality of cytoplasmic and chloroplastic fractions of alfalfa leaf protein concentrate (ALPC). Chloroplastic ALPC supported poor cell growth, probably because of high concentrations of chlorophyll, fat, and chlorogenic acid to which Tetrahymena is reported to be sensitive. Data indicated that isoleucine, phenylalanine, threonine and sulfur-containing amino acids in cytoplasmic ALPC were higher than those in soybean. Data indicated cytoplasmic …

Inheritance Of Resistance To Soil Rot, Streptomyces Ipomoea And Other Characters In The Sweet Potato, Ipomoea Batatas, L., Roberto Soenarjo Dwidjosewoyo
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Genetic study on sweet potato resistance to the soil rot disease, Streptomyces ipomoea and other characters was conducted from 1979 through 1981. In control crosses, L(,3)-64 was incompatible with L(,4)-62 and L(,4)-112 with L(,4)-131. The average pod set for all progenies was 16.95%. Additive genetic effects were more important than non-additive in the inheritance of resistance. Resistant families were only produced from crosses between resistant parents and most progenies from crosses of moderatley resistant x resistant, resistant x susceptible and moderately resistant x susceptible parents produced moderately resistant segregates. Polycross progenies from resistant parents, L(,4)-131 and L(,6)-135, had families with …
Application Of Electroanalytical Techniques To Environmental Thallium Compounds., Linda Katherine Hoeflich
Application Of Electroanalytical Techniques To Environmental Thallium Compounds., Linda Katherine Hoeflich
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Because of increasing concern over global pollution by the energy production industry, especially large, centralized utility complexes, the quantitation and speciation of heavy metals have taken on great importance. These metals are emitted with coal fly ash and may be subsequently deposited in natural waters. Complications arise when certain inorganic compounds undergo biomethylation by microbial action in these waters. Therefore, procedures must be developed to analyze and differentiate the mixture of inorganic and organometallic compounds present. This work is a study of the electrochemical properties of inorganic and organothallium compounds. The toxicological significance of thallium compounds is known, and their …

Recent Trends In Coronary Risk Factors In The Ussr, R. Cooper, A. Schatzkin
Faculty Publications
The Soviet Union has experienced an increase in the incidence of coronary heart disease over the last 15 years sufficient to result in an overall deterioration in the health of adults. The distribution of coronary risk factors, and the secular trends in diet and cigarette consumption provide a potential explanation for the upsurge in death rates. The animal fat content of the Soviet diet has been steadily enriched since the 1950s and cigarette production increased 72 per cent from 1959 to 1980. The post-Stalin orientation of the Soviet economy toward a policy of motivating the work force primarily through the …

Effects Of Insecticide-Herbicide Interactions On Soybean Plants Grown On Eight Louisiana Soils., Henry Clifford Hill Jr
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
In 1979, a study was initiated to determine if selected rates of aldicarb(2-methyl-2(methylthio)propionaldehyde O-(methylcarbamoyl oxime), trifluralin (a,a,a-Trifluoro-2, 6-dinitro-N, N-dipropyl-p-toluidine) and metribuzin (4-amino-6-(1, 1-dimethylethyl)-3-(methylthio)-1, 2, 4-triazin-5(4H)-one), applied alone and in combination, resulted in phytotoxic reactions in soybeans, Glycine max (L.) Merr. var. Davis. The three greenhouse studies and one field-greenhouse study were conducted on eight selected Louisiana soils to determine to what extent the soil characteristics affected the biological activity of these combinations. The trifluralin-containing treatments used in this study, generally, produced stunted, thick-stemmed plants with smaller and fewer nodules than the non-treated check plants. However, N(,2) C(,2) H(,2) activity was …
