Planned procurement quantities in made-to-order production programs are often altered after production has started. Cost analysts are concerned about providing cost estimates for alternatives to ongoing programs. This research develops a new model for repricing made-to-order production programs. It is an effort to integrate a theoretically developed production phase prediction model into a comprehensive repricing model. The production model is defined by a cost function that employs the impact of two cost determinants, production rate and learning. It is supported by economic theory and is consistent with our knowledge of made-to-order production process. The theoretical model links the direct costs …

Human rectal tumor-18 (HRT-18) cell clones 3F3, 3E3, D2, and 4B3 exhibited differences in cellular morphology in Giemsa-stained cultures and developing monolayers. Differences were evident in growth kinetics and plating efficiency of each clone. The clones produced colonies in soft agar, demonstrating anchorage independence. Cytopathic expression (CPE) including cytoplasmic vacuolization and cell fusion occurred in BCV-L9-infected clones 3F3, D2, and 3E3. Cell fusion was inapparent in clone 4B3. Bovine coronavirus strain L9 (BCV-L9) and 5 wild-type isolates replicated in HRT-18 cells, inducing cell fusion. Strain L9, exclusively, replicated in D2BFS cells, requiring trypsin to induce cell fusion. Strain L9 produced …

Agnes Moorehead worked as a professional actress for forty-five years. She was employed in all the major entertainment fields of her time--theatre, vaudeville, radio, film, television and the recording industry. A significant reason for this almost constant employment was Moorehead's career as a public reader of literature. The purpose of this study is twofold. First, it seeks to document Moorehead's public reading career with emphasis upon her solo performances of literature and in so doing to provide an investigation of those people and events that most influenced her success as an oral reader. Seventeen advanced La cotton breeding strains having Heliothis spp. resistance attributed to morphological characters and allelochemics were evaluated for field resistance and flowerbud gossypol content at Baton Rouge, LA. in 1982 and 1983. These experimental cottons averaged less than 50% of the Heliothis spp. larvae and feeding-damaged fruit of two cotton cultivars recommended for production in Louisiana. These strains also had at least 25% less feeding-damaged fruit and 15% fewer live Heliothis spp. larvae than two Heliothis spp. resistant cotton germplasm lines. Results suggested that high flowerbud gossypol pigment glandulosity, rather than flowerbud gossypol content per se, played an important …

Outbred Swiss Webster mice were used as an experimental model for bovine pneumonic pasteurellosis. Using light microscopy and transmission electron microscopy to evaluate lesions, it was determined that intrabronchial inoculation of Pasteurella haemolytica serotype 1 induces dose dependent pulmonary lesions in the mouse. Five x 10('7) colony forming units was the optimum dose which induced lesions and allowed survival for at least 24 hours. Using the optimum dose of inoculum, lesions were evaluated at different time points to determine when neutrophil influx into the lung first occurred. Seven species of Monogenea of the subfamily Ancyrocephalinae were collected from 700 Lepomis macrochirus from two eutrophic localities in southern Louisiana. Host specimens were collected monthly from May 1982 through April 1984 from Pat's Bay and Spanish Lake. The relative densities of nonlarval Onchocleidus ferox, Actinocleidus fergusoni, Haplocleidus acer, H. dispar, Anchoradiscus triangularis, Cleidodiscus robustus, and C. nematocirrus were analysed for correlation with water temperature, significant differences in locality, temporal and spatial dynamics, and effect of host sex on population densities. The ultimate fate and chemical kinetics of low-pH hazardous wastes after deep well injection were studied. Two experimental approaches were taken. Chemical kinetics of reactions involving acids and typical formation clays was studied using a batch reaction scheme. The effects of reactions involving flowing acidic waste streams and disposal formations were characterized using sand packs of length one foot, four feet, and twenty feet. A numerical ground water flow simulator was used to model the interactions of flowing acidic wastes with linear sand packs and with a hypothetical waste disposal system. The present study assessed whether neuropsychological tests could be used to discriminate between groups of CHI individuals with closed head injuries (CHI): those with anger control problems, and those without. The study also assessed whether these groups differed on tests which assess various aspects of neuropsychological functioning; intelligence, memory skills, language functioning, concept formation and set shifting skills, and psychomotor performance. The MacAndrew Alcoholism Scale (MAC scale) has been found generally to differentiate alcoholics from control subjects. Some researchers have proposed it measures a general tendency to abuse drugs as well. The MAC scale's construct has been purported to tap unstable psychopathy at its high end and neuroticism at its low. Stereological methods were employed in two studies with stallions 1) to determine if seasonal variation in the total volume of Leydig cells is a function of cell number or cell size and 2) to characterize the annual cycle of the Leydig cell population. In the first study, numbers of Leydig cells were calculated for 28 adult (4-20 yr) stallions in the breeding or nonbreeding seasons from nuclear volume density (percentage of the decapsulated testicular volume), parenchymal volume (decapsulated testicular volume), and the volume of individual Leydig cell nuclei. Blood pressure levels, anthropometric parameters, and dietary intakes were assessed in 1981 and 1983 in a population of black (n = 236) and white (n = 296) adolescent girls, aged 14 and 16 years in 1983. The 14-year-old black girls exhibited significantly higher mean systolic and diastolic blood pressures than whites in both years. Body weight and Quetelet index were more strongly associated with blood pressure than were height and triceps skinfold thickness. Correcting blood pressures for weight, Quetelet index, 2-year changes in height, and age at menarche decreased in each case (but did not negate) the observed race differences …

Independent studies have shown that both the constant-stress and the elastic instability models describe the form of a plant's central stem. Teleologically, the constant stress model states that a stem tapers to equalize stress produced by wind pressure along the stem. The elastic instability model states that stems and branches taper to maintain similar elasticity throughout the tree and that total tree height is limited to about one-quarter of the height at which the stem would buckle under its own weight. Four dogs with canine heartworm disease (CHD) and four control dogs were tested during a 21 minute submaximal, incremental, graded treadmill test, under normal conditions and after 2 mg/kg propranolol, i.v. Arterial and venous blood gas and pH, heart rate, systemic blood pressure, hematocrit, rectal temperature, lactate, glucose, and electrolytes were measured. CHD dogs had lower sodium and P(,a)O(,2) levels. All dogs displayed progressive increments in heart rate, hematocrit, and potassium and small gains in rectal temperature during exercise. Mean arterial blood pressure (MABP) and arterial pH increased and remained elevated throughout exercise. P(,v)O(,2) and P(,a)CO(,2) decreased, but P(,a)O(,2) did …

Highly specific monoclonal antibodies and microfluorimetry were used to determine the absolute number of B and T lymphocytes in the peripheral blood of bovine leukemia virus (BLV) infected cattle. The peripheral blood lymphocyte populations from BLV-infected cattle were elevated when compared to BLV-negative animals. The increase in the lymphocyte population in the aleukemic (AL) animals was due to an increase in T lymphocytes. In the PL animals the increase was due mainly to an increase of B lymphocytes but also to an increase of T lymphocytes. Recombinant DNA techniques were used to enhance the expression of a gene encoding "aryletherase" activity. This gene, apparently lacking regulatory elements, was present on a 792bp BamHI DNA fragment of Erwinia sp. genomic DNA, that was cloned into Escherichia coli using the plasmid vector pBR322. To obtain a larger fragment of Erwinia genomic DNA carrying the "aryletherase" gene and its regulatory regions, an Erwinia sp. genomic DNA library was constructed in the lambda phage EMBL3. Screening the library with nick translated 792bp BamHI fragment identified several recombinant phage which demonstrated homology with the probe. Restriction digestion of DNA from one …

Characterization Of Messenger Ribonucleoprotein Particles In Dormant Sporangiospores Of The Fungus Mucor Racemosus (Messenger-Rna)., Charles Patrick Chapman

Extracts of sporangiospores of Mucor racemosus contained RNA that readily hybridized with ('3)H polyuridylic acid. Prior to germination, this RNA was in a form sedimenting at <80S. Within 10 minutes after initiating germination, most of this RNA sedimented with polyribosomes and 80S monoribosomes. Particulate material from spore extracts bound to oligo dT -cellulose at high ionic strength and was assumed to contain messenger ribonucleoprotein particles (mRNP's). A portion of the mRNP's was released from the column by lowering the ionic strength. Other portions were eluted stepwise in buffer containing 50% and 90% formamide and in 0.1-N NaOH. Identical elution patterns were observed whether monitoring incorporated ('31)P-orthophosphate or L- ('32)S methionine, absorbance at 280 nm, or hybridization of ('3)H polyuridylic acid. mRNP's from the first two fractions were analyzed. A bimodal population of particles was detected in sedimentation velocity and sedimentation equilibrium centrifugation. Particles eluted at low ionic strength demonstrated a sedimentation coefficient distribution of 20S-to-80S, with a mean of 55S. Particles eluted in formamide demonstrated a sedimentation coefficient distribution of 20S-to-60S, with a mean of 40S. Particles eluted at low ionic strength displayed two peaks in CsCl centrifugation, with bouyant densities of 1.37 gm/cc and 1.59 gm/cc. Particles eluted in formamide displayed a single peak with a buoyant density of 1.61 gm/cc. Particles eluted at low ionic strength and centrifuged in metrizamide solution formed two bands having bouyant densities of 1.15 gm/cc and 1.30 gm/cc; formamide-eluted particles banded only at the higher density. Mucor 40S ribosomal subunits banded at 1.56 gm/cc and 1.28 gm/cc in CsCl and metrizamide solution respectively. Analysis of mRNP fractions by sodium dodecylsulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis characterized protein components of these particles which helped explain their biomodal sedimentation behaviour. Each mRNP fraction contained a unique spectrum of proteins not shared by ribosomes or soluble cell proteins. The formamide-eluted particles contained two proteins, whereas the particles eluted at low ionic strength possessed 12 proteins. A 24,000-dalton protein was the predominant form in both. The denser mRNP's were smaller and lacked proteins found in the larger less dense particles. The former had a protein/RNA ratio of 45/55; whereas the later possessed a value of 90/10. Messenger RNA extracted from the mRNP's sedimented between 8S-to-20S.

A rabbit genomic clone containing the muscle phosphofructokinase (PFK) gene of approximately 17 kilobase pairs encoding 779 amino acids was isolated and sequenced. This gene contains 22 exons, ranging from 45 to 190 base pairs, and is split by 21 introns of 73-3500 base pairs. Eighty six percent of this gene is occupied by introns. An additional incomplete intron is found in the 5' flanking region, while an Alu-like sequence is identified in the 3' flanking region. The amino acid sequence translated from the coding sequence of this gene reveals 29 residues (amino acid numbers 479-507) which complete a previously …

Sedimentological data, and high-resolution current velocity time-series were acquired nearshore along the muddy coast of Louisiana's chenier plain. Results suggest that the 2 to 10 cm thick, laminated and graded silt/shell + mud beds which characterize shoreface mudflat sedimentation form through intermittent dumping of fluid mud suspensions. Cohesive and non-cohesive sediments are first separated and concentrated by shear within a wave boundary layer (WBL). Rapid sedimentation, or "freezing", of the mud fraction occurs when the yield strength of the fluid mud suspension equals that of the WBL shear stress. Many theoretical paradigms have been created in an effort to successfully measure organizational performance. One of the more recent approaches, known as the "population perspective," focuses on populations of organizations as its unit of analysis, and attempts to explain the relationships among organizations, populations, and environments. These relationships are explored by (a) grouping organizations into homogeneous clusters or populations, and (b) assessing alternative selection mechanisms or predictors of organizational prosperity. The studying of populations help define the organizational forms allowing survival within an environment, while increasing the generalizability of the study's findings. Recently, investigations have examined the possible link between the Type A Behavior Pattern (TABP) and chronic headache. Several studies have indicated a significant relation between Type A, as measured by the Jenkins Activity Survey (JAS), and headache frequency. As well, several researchers have noted the similarities in the descriptions of the Type A individual and those characteristics of the "migraine personality." The purpose of the study was to examine relationships between indices of teacher alienation behavior (TAB) and (a) teacher perceptions of multiple dimensions of the work environment, (b) environmental robustness, and (c) teacher personal life characteristics. Teacher perceptions of the work environment and the robustness of key roles in the school organization were explored as factors contributing to the holding power of school. Twenty teachers at each of 97 schools in a large urban school district in Louisiana were randomly selected.
