Feeding And Microspatial Relationships Of Meiobenthic Harpacticoid Copepods With Microbial Flora., Alan William Decho
Feeding And Microspatial Relationships Of Meiobenthic Harpacticoid Copepods With Microbial Flora., Alan William Decho
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Feeding processes and their relationship to microspatial patterns were examined for several harpacticoid species. Field evidences and laboratory radiolabel experiments suggest that diatoms comprise a major portion of the food resources ingested by harpacticoids. Bacteria and mucus-exopolymer secretions (associated with the bacteria and diatoms) are also ingested, coincidently while ingesting diatoms. Also, significant ontogenetic shifts in food resource utilization occur from naupliar to adult stages. Field grazing rate studies were conducted on an intertidal mudflat over different portions of a tidal cycle using several harpacticoid species (Scottolana canadensis, Microarthridion littorale, Paronychocamptus huntsmani). Highest grazing rates for S. canadensis occurred just …
Physiological Abnormalities Related To Bulimic Behaviors And Physical Symptoms: Toward A Biobehavioral Analysis., Lisa Dee Hinz
Physiological Abnormalities Related To Bulimic Behaviors And Physical Symptoms: Toward A Biobehavioral Analysis., Lisa Dee Hinz
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Bulimia is an eating disorder characterized by secretive binge-eating and abnormal weight-control practices such as self-induced vomiting, and laxative abuse. To date, investigations of physiological abnormalities accompanying bulimia are recent, few in number, and descriptive in nature. Commonly reported physiological abnormalities have included: increased serum bicarbonate, usually in combination with decreased serum chloride; decreased serum potassium; and decreased hematocrit. Two correlations have provided preliminary evidence that bulimic behaviors are associated with physiological abnormalities. The present investigation attempted to describe more fully the relationships among bulimic behaviors, physiological abnormalities, and physical symptoms. Three separate models, representing different physiological systems: (1) potassium; …

Salinity Effects On The Development And Larval Tolerance Of Five Species Of Echinoderms., Richard Allen Roller
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Salinity effects on the developmental rates, larval tolerances and various metabolic processes of five species of echinoderms were investigated. Development of Lytechinus variegatus (Lamarck), Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis (O. F. Muller, 1776), Strongylocentrotus purpuratus (Stimpson, 1857), Strongylocentrotus pallidus (G. O. Sars, 1871), and Pisaster ochraceus (Brandt, 1835) larvae were observed. Developmental rates and larval survival to metamorphosis of S. droebachiensis and S. pallidus varied directly with salinity and were well within the observed salinity tolerance and distributional limits for the adults. For each species, embryos and larvae at lower salinities (20, 22.5, and $25\sp{o}\!/\!\sb{oo})$ tended to develop more slowly than those at …

Regulation Of Dextransucrase Secretion By Proton Motive Force In Leuconostoc Mesenteroides., David Roland Otts
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The relationship between proton motive force and the secretion of the enzyme dextransucrase (E.C. 2.4.1.5) in Leuconostoc mesenteroides was investigated. The transmembrane pH gradient was determined by measurement of the uptake of radiolabeled benzoate or methylamine while the membrane potential was determined by measurement of the uptake of radiolabeled tetraphenylphosphonium bromide. Leuconostoc mesenteroides was able to maintain a constant proton motive force of $-130$ mV when grown in fermenters at constant pH while a value of $-140$ mV was determined from concentrated cell suspensions. The contribution of the membrane potential and transmembrane pH gradient to the proton motive force varied …

Development Of A Soft-Tissue Infection Model In The Cow., Cyril Roy Clarke
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The ultimate goals of this study were to develop and define a subcutaneous tissue chamber as a suitable device for establishing a Pasteurella haemolytica soft-tissue infection model in cattle and to use this model to study the in vivo efficacy and distribution of a potentiated sulfa antimicrobial. Developmental studies resulted in the selection of a suitable tissue chamber design that maximized the chamber penetration of an intravenously administered lipid-soluble drug. This chamber could be sampled with ease and contained enough chamber fluid to allow repetitive sampling. Cytological and chemical investigation revealed that the composition of fluid within chambers approached the …
A Supply Response Model For Rice And Soybeans In The Mississippi Delta., David Leon Hoppenstedt
A Supply Response Model For Rice And Soybeans In The Mississippi Delta., David Leon Hoppenstedt
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study examines the economic sources of variation in the supply of rice and soybeans in the Mississippi Delta. As farmers alter their land allocations to various crops, they cause fluctuations in the supply of agricultural products. Traditional theory posits that acreage planted is a function of lagged prices, but does not explicitly recognize some technological constraints. One prevalent technological constraint is that the monocropping of particular crops results in a significant decrease in land productivity. The model in this study attempts to improve the specification of the technological constraint of declining soil productivity due to monocropping. Two different statistical …

Studies On The Protein Changes In Skeletal Muscles Of Gulf Coast Finfish Species Associated With Frozen Storage, Formaldehyde Addition And Freeze-Thawing Cycles., Myrna O. Nisperos-Carriedo
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The effects of frozen storage, formaldehyde addition and freeze-thawing cycles were determined using three finfish species from the Gulf of Mexico, spotted seatrout (Cynoscion nebulosus), black drum (Pogonias cromis) and mullet (Mugil cephalus). Frozen storage of spotted seatrout fillets at $-20\sp\circ$C for 6 weeks led to reductions in pH, water-binding capacity and solubility of salt-extractable proteins. SDS-Polyacrylamide gel electrophoretic examination of the salt-extractable proteins showed that as time of storage increased, aggregation of high-molecular weight components occurred. The addition of 300 ppm formaldehyde prior to frozen storage did not produce significant changes. However, muscles containing 500 ppm formaldehyde showed decreases …

Interactions Of Weed, Nematode, And Arthropod Management Strategies With The Louisiana Sugarcane Agroecosystem: A Holistic Perspective., Allan Thomas Showler
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Interactions among Louisiana sugarcane (Saccharum hybrids), weeds, nematodes, sugarcane mosaic virus (SCMV), and pest, prey, and predatory arthropods were mediated through tropic, host plant biochemical, and intra- and interspecific competitive relationships. Weed competition reduced crop biomass (15%, P $\le$ 0.005), and sugar yield (13%, P $\le$ 0.05). Weeds, however, were associated with more predatory arthropods, including Solenopsis invicta Buren, on the soil, weeds, and sugarcane plants, and with reduced Diatraea saccharalis (F.) injury (over 25%, P $\le$ 0.05). Without chemical D. saccharalis control, sugarcane production in weedy habitats was economically superior to that in weed-free habitats. Aldicarb, a nematicide-insecticide, diminished …

Malaysian Prawn (Macrobrachium Rosenbergii) Production Studies In Polyculture Schemes With Channel Catfish (Ictalurus Punctatus)., Mark Steven Lamon
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Three Malaysian prawn (Macrobrachium rosenbergii)/channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) polyculture studies were conducted from May 1984 through October 1986. In the first study prawn stocking size and density on catfish and prawn production were examined. In 1984 catfish, x = 24 g, were stocked at 9,884/ha. Prawns, x = 0.04 g, were stocked at 4,942, 9,884 and 14,826/ha. After 144 days catfish average weights, survival and yields were $<$340 g, $<$78% and $<$2,000 kg/ha, respectively. Prawn weight, survival and yields ranged from 34-54 g, 47-61% and 165-344 kg/ha, respectively. In 1985 catfish, x = 33 g, were stocked at 7,410/ha and prawns, x = 0.15 and 0.70 g, were stocked at 1984 densities. After 137 days catfish average weight, survival and yields were 427 g, 86% and 2,726 kg/ha, respectively. Prawn weight, survival and yields ranged from 48-73 g, 41-88% and 110-471 kg/ha, respectively. Positive economic net returns were achieved with 0.15 g prawns stocked at 14,826/ha and 0.70 g prawns stocked at 9,884 or 14,826/ha. In a second study prawn bottom location preference and movement were determined in ponds. Males were more frequently observed in the deep ends of ponds and near the ponds' perimeters, and females were observed more frequently in the shallow ends and in the middles of ponds. Prawn movement did not differ between day and night, averaging 1.1 m/hr. Two-funnel crawfish traps and box traps with slit entrances, 12 and 24 hr set times, and white light and commercial crawfish bait attractants were evaluated for capturing prawns. Traps were not effective at capturing prawns regardless of set time or attractant. In the third study catfish and prawn mean lengths and weights from cast-netted and seined samples were compared to a complete population census taken after 48, 92 and 139 days of growth. Ponds were stocked with catfish at 7,410/ha and prawns at 1984 study levels. Cast-netted samples under-estimated and seined samples over-estimated catfish size. Cast-netted and seined sample prawn means did not differ from each other or population parameters. Catfish and prawn size variation increased over time. Catfish and prawn survival decreased during the first 48 days and then remained constant throughout the rest of the grow-out period.

An Assessment Of Africanized Honey Bees (Apis Mellifera L.) As Crop Pollinators., Robert George Danka
An Assessment Of Africanized Honey Bees (Apis Mellifera L.) As Crop Pollinators., Robert George Danka
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Neotropical Africanized honey bees are predicted to replace European bees and become the primary agricultural pollinators in the southern and coastal regions of the United States. This research used direct comparative studies to assess foraging activities and beekeeping-management responses which are expected to govern the performance of Africanized bees as crop pollinators. European colonies fielded on average $3\times$ as many foragers as did Africanized colonies and had percentages of colony members foraging that were nearly $3\times$ as high. European colonies also had much greater variability in foraging activity (ranges: 42-1679 foragers for European bees; 119-352 foragers for Africanized bees); European …

Rice Stink Bug, Oebalus Pugnax (F.), On Rice: Evaluation For Plant Resistance, Interaction Of Field Fungi With Feeding Damage, And Evaluation Of Insecticides For Control., Marieanne Eva Hollay
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Feeding punctures of the rice stink bug (RSB), Oebalus pugnax (F.), provide fungi entry sites into rice, Oryza sativa (L.), grains and kernels (hulled grains). Feeding sheaths also serve as a source of nutrients for fungi. Grain spotting fungi did not affect the percentage of spotted kernels (pecky rice) and significantly reduced full grain weight only at low infestation rates of one and two RSB per panicle. Panicles had been treated with a single application of propriconazol (1000 ppm) soon after flowering and later infested in the early milk stage with RSB adult pairs for 9 days. Propriconazol was not …

Spectroscopic Studies Of Cobalt(Ii) Thiolates And Cobalt(Ii) - Substituted Metallothioneins., Barbara Ann Dixon
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Metallothioneins (MT) are widely occurring proteins characterized by low molecular weights and extremely high metal and sulfur content. Mammalian forms usually contain seven diamagnetic metal ions such as Zn(II) and/or Cd(II) and 20 cysteine residues. An understanding of the physiological role(s) of MT requires the elucidation of the nature and type of metal clusters, and the mechanism of assembly in MT. The stepwise incorporation of Co(II) ions into apo-metallothionein-2 from rabbit liver has been monitored by UV-visible absorption, low temperature magnetic circular dichroism (MCD), and EPR spectroscopies. Interpretation of the results has been facilitated by parallel spectroscopic studies of synthetic …

Bionomics Of The Sugarcane Borer, Diatraea Saccharalis (F.), In Sweet Sorghum, Sorghum Bicolor (L.) Moench., Billy Wayne Fuller
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Economic impact studies revealed that the sugarcane borer, Diatraea saccharalis (F.), reduced sweet sorghum yield of total sugars up to 46% in artificially infested field trials. A significant relationship was found between D. saccharalis damage and yield loss that indicated an economic injury level of 10% bored internodes. Stalk weight, percent sucrose, and total sugars were negatively correlated to D. saccharalis damage; and increased fiber content was positively correlated to percent bored internodes. Information from damage levels, along with survival records, indicated that the economic threshold was reached when approximately 5% of the sweet sorghum plants contained small D. saccharalis …

Nitrone Spin Traps For Biological Studies. (Volumes I And Ii)., William Reeves Huie
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A variety of aldonitrones for spin-trapping investigations have been synthesized, purified, and characterized. The alicyclic 5-member ring nitrones 5,5-dimethyl-1-pyrroline-N-oxide (DMPO) and 3,3,5,5-tetramethyl-1-pyrroline-N-oxide (TMPO) and its long-chain derivatives were prepared in 3 or 4 steps. The reaction steps involved a Michael addition to yield the $\gamma$-nitrocarbonyl compound, subsequent mild reduction with zinc and aqueous ammonium chloride to yield the cyclic intermediate nitrone, a Grignard addition reaction to give the hydroxylamine, and finally copper-catalyzed aerial oxidation of the hydroxylamine to provide the aldonitrone. Poor overall yields were obtained. In contrast, the acyclic aromatic nitrone $\alpha$-phenyl-N-tert-butyl nitrone (PBN) and its derivatives were prepared …

Conformational Studies Of Carnitine And Acetylcarnitine: Design And Synthesis Of Active-Site Probes Of Carnitine Acetyltransferase., William Jay Colucci
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The conformations of carnitine (Cn) and acetylcarnitine (AcCn) have been investigated through a combination of methods. The solid-state structures of their zwitter-ionic forms have been determined by single-crystal X-ray analyses. The crystal structures reveal different backbone conformations for the two molecules. Carnitine exists in an extended conformation (a,g $\sp-$ conformations for the C1-C2-C3-C4 and N1-C4-C3-O3 torsion angles, respectively), while AcCn exhibits a folded conformation ($g\sp-,g\sp-$). The solution conformations of Cn and AcCn have been investigated by high resolution $\sp1$H NMR coupling data. A simple equation has been developed for the prediction of torsion angles from $\sp3 J$ (HCCH) coupling constants. …

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Laboratory observations on the mating behavior of soybean loopers, Pseudoplusia includens (Walker), indicated a calling pattern that was highly variable both within individual females over time and among individuals. However, some trends were apparent. The onset of calling showed temporal advancement over the first three nights of calling after adult emergence; the duration of calling showed a temporal advancement during the first six nights, while the termination of calling receded over the same period then reversed its trend. The majority of females initiated calling three nights following emergence while maximum percent calling was observed around five hours after the onset …
