Behavioral And Physiological Adaptations Of Largemouth Bass (Micropterus Salmoides) To Low-Salinity Environments., Michael Rogers Meador Jan 1988

Behavioral And Physiological Adaptations Of Largemouth Bass (Micropterus Salmoides) To Low-Salinity Environments., Michael Rogers Meador

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A study of the biology, movements, behavior, and physiology of largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) from a low-salinity marsh in Lafourche Parish, Louisiana was conducted from March 1985 to December 1987. Comparative data were also collected for freshwater largemouth bass from Ben Hur Lake and False River, Louisiana. Marsh largemouth bass were small compared to freshwater bass of similar age, although growth rates of older marsh bass equaled or exceeded those of freshwater fish. Marsh bass relative weight indicated excellent condition during all seasons, while freshwater bass exhibited reduced condition in early spring and fall. Characteristic body morphology and growth of …

A Distributional Analysis Of The Warblers Of The West Indies. (Volumes I And Ii)., David Neal Pashley Jan 1988

A Distributional Analysis Of The Warblers Of The West Indies. (Volumes I And Ii)., David Neal Pashley

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Wood-warblers (Aves:Emberizidae:Parulinae) are a conspicuous and perhaps declining component of the avifauna of North America and the Neotropics. The West Indies are home to 16 permanent resident species and have been included in the ranges of 40 migrant species. On the basis of specimens in the world's museums and published literature, I report the known status, seasonality, and natural history of warblers in the Virgin Islands (1 permanent resident; 29 migrants), the Western Caribbean (2;28), the Lesser Antilles (5;26), the Bahamas (5;38), Bermuda (0;38), Puerto Rico (3;30), Jamaica (2;32), Hispaniola (4;31), and Cuba (4;35). I grouped the migrants into nine …

Site-Directed Mutagenesis In Fructose 6-Phosphate-1-Kinase From Bacillus Stearothermophilus And Molecular Cloning And Sequencing Of A Partial Human Muscle Fructose 6-Phosphate-1-Kinase Gene., Benigno Calderon Valdez Jan 1988

Site-Directed Mutagenesis In Fructose 6-Phosphate-1-Kinase From Bacillus Stearothermophilus And Molecular Cloning And Sequencing Of A Partial Human Muscle Fructose 6-Phosphate-1-Kinase Gene., Benigno Calderon Valdez

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Fructose 6-phosphate-1-kinase (PFK: EC. 2.7.1.11) catalyzes the phosphorylation of $\beta$-fructose 6-phosphate (Fru 6-P) to $\beta$-fructose 1,6-bisphosphate. The first part of this dissertation shows that PFK from Bacillus stearothermophilus (BsPFK) unlike the major PFK from E. coli (EcPFKA) exhibits a hyperbolic profile with respect to Fru 6-P concentration in the absence of phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP). BsPFK is sensitive to inhibition by high ATP concentrations and competitively inhibited by GDP or ADP. Arg-252 residue of BsPFK has been proposed to be involved in the binding of Fru 6-P. Mutation of this residue to alanine (RA252) increases BsPFK affinity for its inhibitor PEP (a …

Backfilling Canals To Mitigate Wetland Dredging In Louisiana Coastal Marshes, Christopher Neill, R. Eugene Turner Nov 1987

Backfilling Canals To Mitigate Wetland Dredging In Louisiana Coastal Marshes, Christopher Neill, R. Eugene Turner

Faculty Publications

Returning canal spoil banks into canals, or backfilling, is used in Louisiana marshes to mitigate damage caused by dredging for oil and gas extraction. We evaluated 33 canals backfilled through July 1984 to assess the success of habitat restoration. We determined restoration success by examining canal depth, vegetation recolonization, and regraded spoil bank soils after backfilling. Restoration success depended on: marsh type, canal location, canal age, marsh soil characteristics, the presence or absence of a plug at the canal mouth, whether mitigation was on- or off-site, and dredge operator performance.

Backfilling reduced median canal depth from 2.4 to 1.1 m, …

Floating Marshes In Louisiana: Substrate And Hydrolic Characterization, Christopher M. Swarzenski Aug 1987

Floating Marshes In Louisiana: Substrate And Hydrolic Characterization, Christopher M. Swarzenski

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Substrate characteristics and vertical mat movement were determined for maidencane (Panicum hemitomon), bulltongue(Sagittaria falcata) and wire-grass (Spartina patens) dominated marshes located progressively closer to the Gulf of Mexico in Barataria Basin, Louisiana, at Lake Boeuf, Lake Salvador and Bayou des Rigolettes, respectively. The near-surface substrate of the marshes at Lake Boeuf and Lake Salvador was characterized by high mean organic matter content (> 90%, >80%, gig dry weight x 100) and low mean mineral densities (0.007, 0.013 glee) respectively. Mean dry bulk density at these two marshes was low (0.065, 0.068 glee, respectively). Mean dry bulk densities were highest at …

Spoil Banks: Effects On A Coastal Marsh Water-Level Regime, Erick M. Swenson, R. Eugene Turner

Faculty Publications

Above- and below-ground water-level fluctuations were measured in the marshes south of New Orleans, Louisiana, between November 1982 and December 1983. The purpose of the program was to defme the basic marsh water-level regime and to investigate how canal spoil banks may influence the water-level regime. Two study areas were used: (1) a control area, defined as a section of marsh with unrestricted hydrologic connection to an adjacent bayou; and, (2) a partially-impounded area, defined as an area with limited hydrologic connection to an adjacent bayou due to the presence of dredged canal spoil banks. Data sources included marsh water …

On The Nature And Origin Of Microporosity In Micritic Limestones., Stephen Oakley Moshier Jan 1987

On The Nature And Origin Of Microporosity In Micritic Limestones., Stephen Oakley Moshier

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The matrix and micritic components of "chalky" limestones feature well-disseminated pores with diameters of 5-10$\mu$m. SEM studies of porous micrites reveal numerous microporosity types, including: (1) primary intercrystalline and interparticle micropores, and (2) solution-enhanced intercrystalline, moldic and vug micropores. During early diagenesis, carbonate is transfered from particles to blocky micrite and microspar cements growing in adjacent micropores. Microporosity may be retained if cementation is arrested shortly after the stabilization process is complete. Primary, intercrystalline microporosity characterizes micritic limestones in the Shuaiba Fm. (L. Cretaceous) at Sajaa field in Sharjah, U.A.E. Calcite rhombs composing matrix average 4-6 $\mu$m in diameter. Matrix …

Cerebroprotective Activity Of U-50488h: Relationship To Interactions With Excitatory Amino Acids And Calcium., Marlene Camacho Ochoa Jan 1987

Cerebroprotective Activity Of U-50488h: Relationship To Interactions With Excitatory Amino Acids And Calcium., Marlene Camacho Ochoa

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The mechanism underlying the anticonvulsant and cerebroprotective activity of U-50488H was evaluated using $\sp{45}$Ca$\sp{++}$ uptake in rat Ficoll purified synaptosomes, ($\sp3$H)-2-deoxyglucose uptake in selected mouse brain regions, ($\sp3$H)kainic acid binding to mouse forebrain synaptic membranes and incidence of KA-induced lesions in the CA3 region of the mouse hippocampus. U-50488H causes reduction in K$\sp+$-evoked $\sp{45}$Ca$\sp{++}$ uptake. These effects are comparable to those of the calcium channel blockers verapamil and nifedipine and seem to be related to calcium dependent mechanisms. Changes in saturability, specificity and dissociation constant values of kainic acid receptor binding were demonstrated in the presence of U-50488H at concentrations …

Protein‐Structural Heterogeneity In A Non‐Allosteric Monomeric Insect Hemoglobin Monitored By Proton Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy, David H. Peyton, R. Krishnamoorthi, Gerd N. La Mar, Klaus Gersonde, Kevin M. Smith, Daniel W. Parish

Faculty Publications

Proton NMR has revealed two modes of structural heterogeneity in the monomeric hemoglobin I of Chironomus thummi thummi, CTT I; rotational disorder caused by a 180° rotation of the heme about the α, γ‐meso axis (primary heterogeneity), which varies for each preparation or reconstitution of this hemogobin, and a ‘silent’ amino acid replacement [Thr/Ala exchange in position 98(FG4)] in the vicinity of the heme group, which is invariant under all experimental conditions. The heme rotational disorder (primary heterogeneity) can be removed by reconstitution of CTT I with the symmetrical protoheme III. The secondary splitting is not affected; the ratio of …

Mechanism Of Attachment Of Swarm Cells Of Thiothrix Nivea., J. M. Larkin, R. Nelson Jan 1987

Mechanism Of Attachment Of Swarm Cells Of Thiothrix Nivea., J. M. Larkin, R. Nelson

Faculty Publications

Swarm cells of Thiothrix nivea were found to possess a group of fimbriae at one pole. The other pole either was bare or possessed from one to three fimbriae. By using this polarity as a marker, it was found that the initial step in attachment of swarm cells involves the fimbriated pole and that this initial step is followed by the production of holdfast material.

The Cemetery As A Cultural Manifestation: Louisiana Necrogeography., Tadashi Nakagawa Jan 1987

The Cemetery As A Cultural Manifestation: Louisiana Necrogeography., Tadashi Nakagawa

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Cultural geography, in order to advance as a science, must stand on a deductive theory which is subject to empirical tests. This study establishes a scientific theory for geographical interpretation of cultural landscape by using Louisiana cemeteries as empirical objects. Based upon the assumption that, ultimately, only individual men can play a causative role in the creation of the cemetery landscape, a theory is constructed by examining man's action modeled on the practical syllogism. Operationally defined, culture is the expression of the individual's voluntary group identity that can be identified by comparing groups. A variety of group identities which are …

A study was undertaken to examine fecundity and floral ontogeny in wild type (WT) and tissue culture-derived (TC) plants of Hibiscus acetosella Welw. ex Hiern. Twenty-eight plants regenerated in vitro from somatic embryos were outplanted and established in the greenhouse, as were three WT plants from seed. The TC and WT plants were self-pollinated. Nine of the TC plants were self-fertile but exhibited a reduction in fruit set and seed set when compared to WT. Days to maturity for fertile fruit varied significantly among TC plants. There was no correlation of days to maturity and number of seed set. Days …

Production And Evaluation Of Antisera And Monoclonal Antibodies Directed Against The Serovar-Specific Lipopolysaccharide Antigens Of Vibrio Cholerae., Linda Benton Adams Jan 1987

Production And Evaluation Of Antisera And Monoclonal Antibodies Directed Against The Serovar-Specific Lipopolysaccharide Antigens Of Vibrio Cholerae., Linda Benton Adams

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Vibrio cholerae is typed serologically on the basis of somatic O-antigens. The serovar-specific antigens A, B, and C of V. cholerae O1 are located in the polysaccharide (PS) moiety of the lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in the cell wall, but the exact structure and composition of these antigens are unknown. Presently, V. cholerae non-O1 serovars are differentiated serologically by two independent typing systems. Each system utilizes whole cell vaccines which result in typing sera containing serovar-specific, anti-PS activity and non-specific, cross-reacting activities. Serovar-specific anti-PS sera were produced in rabbits immunized with PS extracted from selected vaccine strains of V. cholerae O1 and …

Effects Of Riverine Barriers On Genetic Differentiation Of Amazonian Forest Undergrowth Birds (Peru)., Angelo Paul Capparella Jan 1987

Effects Of Riverine Barriers On Genetic Differentiation Of Amazonian Forest Undergrowth Birds (Peru)., Angelo Paul Capparella

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The high frequency with which rivers delimit phenotypically differentiated bird taxa is unique to Amazonia, where major rivers often form the boundaries between allospecies and subspecies pairs of understory terra firme forest birds. In contrast, many such forest species with life history traits similar to these differentiated forms show no variation in plumage across even the largest rivers. To determine whether such species are nonetheless genetically differentiated, I obtained tissue samples from populations of forest understory birds from opposite banks of the Napo and Amazon rivers of northeastern Peru. These included three species that are not phenotypically differentiated across the …

Effects Of Interaction Between Red Rice And Two Rice Cultivars On Morphological, Physiological And Ecological Characteristics., Jairo Clavijo Jan 1987

Effects Of Interaction Between Red Rice And Two Rice Cultivars On Morphological, Physiological And Ecological Characteristics., Jairo Clavijo

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Germination, emergence, and early seedling development patterns were analyzed for red rice (Oryza sativa L.) and the rice (Oryza sativa L.) cultivars Mars, Saturn, Lemont and Bellemont. Red rice had the highest germination percentage, fastest emergence rate, and earliest development of both shoots and roots. These results suggest that the competitive ability of red rice is based on these characteristics which enable it to preempt more resources at early stages of stand development. Interaction between red rice and Lemont or Mars was evaluated by comparing morphological and physiological characteristics of these plants when grown in pure stands and in 50:50 …

Molecular Cloning And Sequencing Of The Bacillus Stearothermophilus 6-Phosphofructo-1-Kinase Gene And Of A Partial Rabbit Muscle 6-Phosphofructo-1-Kinase Complementary-Dna., Brent Arthur French Jan 1987

Molecular Cloning And Sequencing Of The Bacillus Stearothermophilus 6-Phosphofructo-1-Kinase Gene And Of A Partial Rabbit Muscle 6-Phosphofructo-1-Kinase Complementary-Dna., Brent Arthur French

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A system is presented for determining the relationships between structure and function in the allosteric enzyme 6-phosphofructo-1-kinase (PFK). The ATP-dependent phosphorylation of fructose 6-phosphate to fructose 1,6-bisphosphate catalyzed by PFK is the first reaction unique to the glycolytic pathway. The structure-function relationships in PFK can now be addressed by site-specific mutagenesis. This is a method for directly testing hypotheses concerning the functions of individual amino acids in a protein molecule. The main body of this dissertation is composed of three sections. The first two sections describe the development of a system by which the structure-function relationships in Bacillus stearothermophilus PFK …

In Vitro Regeneration And Protein Changes Associated With Two Cultivars Of Agrostis Palustris Huds. Cultured Under High Sodium-Chloride Conditions., John Casper Hovanesian

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Calli from 'Penneagle' and 'Seaside' creeping bentgrass (Agrostis palustris Huds.) were selected for enhanced ability to proliferate on media supplemented with 514 mM NaCl. Based on dry matter production and vigor, growth of plants regenerated from NaCl-adapted calli of both cultivars in saline hydroponic nutrient medium, was superior to that of plants regenerated from non-adapted calli. At 257 mM NaCl, plants from NaCl-sensitive calli died or were unable to produce measurable dry matter whereas plants from NcCl-adapted calli grew well. Growth of plants from NaCl-adapted calli was inhibited at 340 mM NaCl. At 514 mM NaCl, resistant plants no longer …

The Louisiana Cooperative Extension Service: A Descriptive History Of Its Origin And Development. (Volumes I And Ii)., Edwin Clark Forrest Jr Jan 1987

The Louisiana Cooperative Extension Service: A Descriptive History Of Its Origin And Development. (Volumes I And Ii)., Edwin Clark Forrest Jr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation studies the conditions which brought the Louisiana Cooperative Extension Service (LCES) into existence in 1914 and which have sustained it for over 70 years. The U.S. Department of Agriculture estimates that 40 percent of Russia's population consists of farmers and that approximately 70 percent of China's population are farmers. The significance of these figures in relation to productivity is apparent when contrasted with the United States farm population of 2 percent. The current high level of production in American agriculture, sustained by such a small percentage of the population, is not an accident, as Professor Roy V. Scott, …

Parameters Of Peat Formation In The Mississippi Delta (Holocene)., Elisabeth Catharina Kosters Jan 1987

Parameters Of Peat Formation In The Mississippi Delta (Holocene)., Elisabeth Catharina Kosters

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The Mississippi Delta consists of six major Holocene deltaic complexes, that each had a life-span of about 1500 years. Emphasis of this study is on autochthonous peats of Barataria Basin, a large-scale interdistributary basin, between levees of the LaFourche and St. Bernard/Plaquemine deltas. A 6 m. thick set of lithostratigraphic units constitutes the aggradational basin-fill. Organic-rich beds occur in three phases, each representing an accumulating period that was interrupted by subsidence and the influx of detrital clastics from renewed nearby fluvio-deltaic sedimentation. Peats accumulated in eutrophic, non-domed environments in fresh water swamps and (often floating) marshes and average 81.7% organic …

The Rabbit Phosphofructokinase Genes: Molecular Cloning, Sequencing And Characterization., Ming-Ching Kao Jan 1987

The Rabbit Phosphofructokinase Genes: Molecular Cloning, Sequencing And Characterization., Ming-Ching Kao

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Two rabbit phosphofructokinase (PFK) genomic clones were isolated from a lambda Charon 4A rabbit liver DNA library. A 180-bp rabbit muscle PFK cDNA encoding 60 amino acids in the C-terminal region of RM-PFK was used as a probe. By using the shotgun subcloning approach, we cloned, sequenced and characterized two rabbit PFK genomic clones. The two clones overlapped and represented a total length of 17 kb which encoded the entire RM-PFK protein. The organization of this gene was elucidated by restriction mapping and DNA sequencing. It contains 22 exons, ranging in size from 45 to 190 bp, separated by 21 …

Management Of Rhizoctonia Aerial Blight Of Soybean And Biology Of Sclerotia Of Rhizoctonia Solani Kuhn (Louisiana)., Gary Fischer Joye Jan 1987

Management Of Rhizoctonia Aerial Blight Of Soybean And Biology Of Sclerotia Of Rhizoctonia Solani Kuhn (Louisiana)., Gary Fischer Joye

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Rhizoctonia Aerial Blight (RAB) has caused severe damage on susceptible soybean cultivars throughout the southern soybean growing areas in Louisiana and the southeastern United States. During the 1983, 1984, and 1985 growing seasons, several greenhouse and field experiments were conducted to determine the influence of cultural practices (row spacings, plant populations, potassium fertilizer rates, and fungicide treatments) on RAB. A row spacing of 25 cm resulted in higher yields than row spacings of 50, 75, or 100 cm, regardless of disease rating. After the crop canopy had reached its maximum density, disease ratings were not significantly different between row spacings …

Insulin Receptors Of Erythrocytes And Liver Membranes In Dogs., Karen Johnson Wolfsheimer Jan 1987

Insulin Receptors Of Erythrocytes And Liver Membranes In Dogs., Karen Johnson Wolfsheimer

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Insulin receptor assays using canine liver membranes and erythrocytes were validated for use in evaluating insulin receptor binding parameters within a healthy population of dogs. Association, dissociation, saturability and specificity were demonstrated for insulin receptors of canine liver membranes and erythrocytes. Assay precision was evaluated by measuring interassay coefficient of variation (liver membrane = 25.0%; erythrocytes = 9.3%). Because the number of high-affinity receptor sites and high-affinity K$\sb{\rm D}$ were determined using physiological concentrations of insulin, they were considered to be more physiologically important than the total number of receptor sites, low-affinity K$\sb{\rm D}$ and Ke, which were derived using …
