The relation between life events and psychological distress has been a subject of considerable interest in recent years. Most previous research has focused on major life events. The present study investigated the role of minor daily events and their relation to symptoms of depression, anxiety and global psychological distress. Two scoring approaches were used for both types of events; frequency of occurrence and the subjective weighting of each occurrence. A total of one hundred and ninety one subjects volunteered from the community. Each subject completed the daily stress scale each day for seven consecutive days. At the end of the …

Louisiana contains the largest volume of baldcypress (Taxodium distichum (L.) Rich.) timber in the United States, with 70% of the volume located in the south central part of the state. Baldcypress regeneration was studied in the Barataria and Verret Basins during 1982-1987. Overall, natural regeneration was poor in both basins. There was some recruitment during the dry years 1984 and 1986 but these seedlings did not grow tall enough to survive subsequent flooding. Coppice regeneration in logged areas was excellent after logging, but a majority of the sprouts died in succeeding years. In three projects where baldcypress seedlings were planted …

Monoclonal antibodies (MCAbs) produced against the prototype cell-adapted Wyoming strain of equine infectious anemia virus (EIAV), a lentivirus, were studied for reactivity with the homologous prototype and 16 heterologous isolates. Eighteen hybridomas producing MCAbs were isolated. Western blot (immunoblot) analyses indicated that 10 were specific for the major envelope glycoprotein (gp90) and 8 for the transmembrane glycoprotein (gp45). Four MCAbs specific to epitopes of gp90 neutralized prototype EIAV infectivity. These neutralizing MCAbs apparently reacted with variable regions of the envelope gp90, as evidenced by their unique reactivity with the panel of isolates, suggesting recognition of at least three different neutralization …

A comparative study of two susceptible species, the chicken and the rat, to crude and partially purified extracts of the plant Sesbania drummondii was undertaken. Partial physical and chemical characterization of crude sesbania extracts has been accomplished including temperature and pH stability, molecular weight fractionation and high pressure liquid chromatography and thin layer chromatography retention times. The toxicity of these different fractions could be differentiated with respect to weight loss, mortality, morbidity, serum protein changes and effect on PChE (Pseudocholinesterase) activities. Two commercially important species of Louisiana crayfish, Procambarus clarkii (Girard) and P. acutus acutus (Girard), from the Atchafalaya River Basin and from open ponds, as well as sediment and water from these environs, were sampled at three times during two consecutive fishing (production) seasons. The abdominal muscle and hepatopancreatic tissue were digested with nitric acid; the sediment was dried prior to digestion with hydrofluoric acid and aqua regia; and the water was filtered prior to analysis by inductively coupled plasma emission spectrometry (ICP) for As, Cd, Cu, Cr, Hg, Pb, and Ni. Nine rice cultivars with different levels of resistance to sheath blight, caused by Rhizoctonia solani, were evaluated in the field and greenhouse for quantity of epicuticular wax (EW) from leaves, infection cushion (IC) formation by the pathogen on leaves, and the relationship of these factors to disease resistance. Comparisons among resistant and susceptible cultivars using scanning electron microscopy suggested that more EW was found on the leaf blade and sheath surfaces of resistant cultivars. Gravimetric analysis of EW from rice leaves supported these observations. EW production at different growth stages increased until the boot stage and then dropped. Correlation coefficients …

The central issue examined in this research is the association of age and fear of crime, and more specifically, the interaction of age with other variables in determining fear levels. The data used were drawn from a Crime Survey of Louisiana conducted in 1984. The sample was state wide and derived from drivers' license holders in Louisiana. This research used three separate measures of fear in exploring the interaction of age with other predictors of fear of crime: global fear, fear of violent crime, and fear of property crime. Five articles explain distinct types of linguistic phenomena with visual perception analogies. Together they give indications of similar cognitive systems underlying language and vision. First, relative numbers of languages with different basic-sentence orders for Subject, Verb, and Object fall in a hierarchy: #SOV $>$ #SVO $>$ #VSO $>$ #VOS $>$ #OVS $>$ #OSV. If syntactic interpretation parallels figure/ground interpretation and semantic form parallels enclosed visual forms then that hierarchy falls out more elegantly than in generative or functionalist explanations. The production and processing of freshwater crawfish (Procambarus sp.) is an important seafood industry in Louisiana. Year round availability of a consistently high quality product will help maximize marketability of peeled crawfish meat. This study addressed several quality problems associated with fresh and frozen crawfish meat. Fresh, peeled crawfish meat is frequently packaged with hepatopancreas for added flavor in prepared dishes. Sporadic development of mushiness in crawfish meat packed with hepatopancreas was an unpredictable problem for crawfish processors. Hepatopancreatic enzymes were thought to be causing proteoloysis of ice-stored meat. Study results showed significant effects (p $<$ 0.01) of cooking time on the texture of ice-stored meat. Gelatin degradation by hepatopancreas proved to be a good indicator of enzyme activity and adequacy of blanch treatment. A popular preference for red swamp crawfish (P. clarkii) over white river crawfish (P. acutus acutus) is maintained by many processors and consumers. Both species are harvested simultaneously in mixed proportions. Easily recognizable exterior physical characteristics distinguish the two species. The composition of a forest of relicts of cultivation in four uninhabited valleys in Kohala, Hawaii, is documented. A general hypothesis is made that arboreal distribution patterns are a function of both historical land use and ecological interaction since abandonment. The physical and historical geography of the valleys was investigated. Climate varies little, but distinct geomorphic zones offer differing biological environments. Prehistoric land use consisted of taro patches with intercropped banks. Talus slope gardens supported the Polynesian tree crops 'ohi'a 'ai (Eugenia malaccensis), kukui (Aleurites moluccana), 'ulu, (Artocarpus incisus), ti (Cordyline terminalis), and noni (Morinda citrifolia), important in today's flora. …

This study was designed to investigate the effect of sex and social influence on perception of physical effort during light or heavy work by male and female athletes. Subjects performed three submaximal trials of 27 minutes each on a cycle ergometer at 25, 50 and 70% of maximum oxygen consumption in the presence of a male coactor, a female coactor, and just riding alone. The results indicated that subjects' ratings of perceived exertion (RPE) were similar when performing at all three coactor/alone conditions. No significant sex difference in RPE was found. The role of a toxic metabolite in the stem canker disease of soybean was investigated. Isolates of Dpc produced a metabolite in the culture filtrate which produced symptoms similar to stem canker on soybean plants. The severity of symptoms was dose dependent. The isolate from Opelousas, Louisiana produced significantly higher amounts of the toxin than the other isolates. A positive correlation was seen between the amount of toxin produced and the severity of disease produced by the Dpc isolates. A fluidized bed/upflow sand filter configuration, was developed and designed for utilization in recirculating aquaculture system, specifically the soft-shell crab and soft-shell crawfish industries. These filters were selected and designed because of their ability to withstand clogging and still maintain high levels of water quality for aquaculture production. The effectiveness of sand grain size was used to evaluate fluidized bed filter performance with filter loadings ranging from 16 to 1285 pounds of crawfish per cubic foot of filter sand. Several experiments were conducted to evaluate the influence of various lipids on laying hen cholesterol metabolism. Hens of equal age and production status were used and housed in individual cages with individual feeders. Main responses measured were yolk, liver and serum cholesterol, and fatty acid composition of serum cholesterol esters. Preliminary results showed a significant linear yolk cholesterol increase on day 9 with 0, 0.5, and 1% dietary cholesterol. Added levels of up to 4% cholesterol for 21 days failed to significantly increase further yolk cholesterol. Serum cholesterol was unaffected. Aerially exposed, bivalve molluscs face opposing problems of preventing water loss, and maintaining metabolism. Because of the unpredictability of emersion duration, most freshwater bivalve families are capable of extensive emersion tolerance. Corbicula fluminea (Muller) is a relatively recent invader of freshwater and shares many physiological features with its estuarine ancestors. It might be expected to be intermediate in its emersion responses between those of more ancient freshwater forms, and those of estuarine clams. The effect of temperature stress on profiles of LH and FSH from pituitary cells; aldosterone, progesterone, cortisol and corticosterone from adrenocortical cells; and estradiol and progesterone from granulosa cells were evaluated using bovine anterior pituitary, adrenocortical and granulosa cells in primary cultures. Cells were grown to confluency in a 37$\sp\circ$C humidified incubator containing 95% O$\sb2$ and 5% CO$\sb2$. Upon reaching confluency, half of the wells were assigned to 40$\sp\circ$C incubation temperature while the other half remained at 37$\sp\circ$C. The social organization and reproductive behavior of ten species of hawkfishes was studied at several Pacific localities. In addition, the zoogeography of all Indo-West Pacific cirrhitids was considered in relation to both the Indo-Malayan triangle as a center of species diversity and the isolation of the Pacific and Indian ocean basins during Quaternary events. Patterns of hawkfish distribution and species richness, reflected in high levels of endemism in both the Pacific and Indian ocean basins, support the hypothesis that the Indo-Malayan triangle is not so much a center of speciation as one of the confluence of two distinct centers of …

This study was the first to apply a behavior analytic model of assessment to failure to thrive (FTT) by observing parent and child behavior during mealtimes at hospitalization for provisional diagnosis of FTT. Descriptive data (e.g., child growth parameters, temperament, and developmental status; maternal medical history and psychopathology; and demographic information) also were collected. The restriction endonuclease HpaII was utilized to examine ribosomal RNA gene (rDNA) methylation in maize and teosinte leaf DNA. Much of the rDNA was inaccessible to HpaII cleavage indicating that these repeat units were completely methylated. In all of the DNAs examined, a significant fraction (10-25%) of the rDNA was cleaved at least once by HpaII into repeat unit length (9.1 kbp) fragments. The undermethylated HpaII sites mapped to the intergenic spacer (IGS) region of the rDNA. The major site of undermethylation was located in a region near the transcriptional start site. Seasonal biology studies of the chinch bug, Blissus leucopterus leucopterus (Say), indicated movement out of overwintering sites in April in central Louisiana. Mass emergence appeared to be influenced by ambient temperatures of 26.7$\sp\circ$C or above. Overwintering populations attacked corn and wheat simultaneously and field invasions were predominantly by flight. Peak overwintering populations in Andropogon virginicus L. occurred in November and December. Overwintering populations decreased consistently beginning in January and culminated with spring emergence. Fall migrations back to overwintering sites began in September and peaked in October. Genetic variances estimates were obtained for ten traits of the Louisiana sugarcane breeding population. The variances and resulting statistics were derived from a population of three offspring each from 40 biparental crosses of 28 elite parents. The offspring and their parents were grown in replicated tests in five environments (year-location combinations). Narrow and broad-sense heritabilities, genetic correlations, genetic coefficients of variation and genetic gain estimates were estimated. To represent clonal populations in different stages of selection, the population was divided into three subpopulations: offspring, noncommercial parents and commercial parents. The influence of fire on turkey oak (Quercus laevis Walt.) and sand live oak (Q. geminata Small) populations was examined in experimental fires in sandhills near Tampa. Turkey oak crown survival was positively related to oak dbh, distance to the nearest longleaf pine (Pinus palustris Mill.), and dbh of the nearest pine. The pyrogenic litter of pines adversely affected survival of small turkey oaks within 10-20 m of the nearest pine, depending on fire severity. Resprouting of crown-killed turkey oaks was inversely related to oak dbh and, in one field, distance to the nearest pine. Poor resprouting away from pines …

Permethrin, fenvalerate, methomyl, acephate and methyl parathion were bioassayed on larvae of the soybean looper, Pseudoplusia includens (Walker) and the velvetbean caterpillar, Anticarsia gemmatalis (Hubner) fed on susceptible (Bragg) versus resistant (PI 227687) soybean, Glycine max (L.) Merr., cultivars. Soybean loopers reared on resistant leaves were significantly more susceptible to acephate (2-fold) than when reared on susceptible leaves. Velvetbean caterpillars fed resistant leaves were more susceptible to both fenvalerate (1.5-fold) and acephate (1.6-fold) than when fed susceptible leaves. FtsA is a gene essential for cell septation. It has been postulated to have both regulatory and structural functions. To study the structural involvement of the FtsA protein in septum formation, four FtsA-LacZ protein fusions were constructed using a mini-Mu transposon (MudII1734). When maxicells containing either ftsA-lacZ or ftsA specifying plasmids were radioactively labelled and fractionated, FtsA-LacZ fusion protein and FtsA were located in both the membrane and cytoplasmic fractions. The FtsA-LacZ fusion proteins were also located in dividing wild type dividing cells by measuring $\beta$-galactosidase activity. Dextranase is an enzyme which destroys dextran, a contaminant in sugar and a main constituent of dental plaque. Dextranase utilization can solve a major economic problem in the sugar industry, and in dental preparations it can keep teeth essentially free of plaque. The dextranase from the yeast Lipomyces starkeyi was investigated because this organism has been used in food related processes. This attribute should allow for Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval for use of a Lipomyces dextranase. None of the existing commercial dextranase preparations have FDA approval. The major RNA polymerases of Bacillus subtilis and Escherichia coli recognize the same conserved sequences at $-$10 and $-$35 of the promoter. The B. subtilis enzyme requires additional DNA sequences for efficient promoter utilization. Deletion mutants were used to demonstrate that the function of two B. subtilis phage SP82 promoters, Ba1129 and Alu156, was dramatically affected by sequence upstream from $-$35. The upstream DNA contained runs of four to six adenines with a 10-11 base pair periodicity. Four Gossypium hirsutum L. lines (La. RN 910, Auburn 612 RNR, M 019-RNR, and 'Deltapine 41' (Dp 41)) were selected for a genetic study of their reaction to reniform nematode, Rotylenchulus reniformis Linford and Oliveira, based on observed differences. Dp 41 (susceptible) was crossed to each of the three moderately resistant lines. F$\sb1$ generations were selfed and each was backcrossed to each of its parents. To understand the initiation of translation of picornavirus RNA, cell-free translation of the RNA of encephalomyocarditis virus (EMCV) was examined after hybridization of chemically synthesized cDNA fragments to different sites of the 5$\sp\prime$ untranslated region (5$\sp\prime$ UTR) of the viral RNA and after deletion of specific segments of the 5$\sp\prime$ UTR by RNase H digestion. In addition, "translation competition" experiments, using RNA fragments derived from different parts of the 5$\sp\prime$ UTR, were performed. Potential environmental hazards are posed by the presence of 2,4,6-Trinitrotoluene (TNT) contamination in soils of US Army Ammunition Plants (AAPs). Adsorption and desorption studies were conducted on soil samples collected from 13 AAPs. Soils were found to be primarily silt loams, low in organic carbon. TNT reached a steady state of adsorption with test soils within 2 hrs of contact. Desorption also reached steady state within 2 hrs with more than half of the adsorbed TNT being removed. Neural network studies have previously focused on monolithic structures. The brain has a bicameral nature, however, and so it is natural to expect that bicameral structures will perform better. This dissertation offers an approach to the development of such bicameral structures. The companion neural structure takes advantage of the global and subset characteristics of the stored memories.
